A companion to the fabulous PBS series, the 21-song, 77-minute The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" provides about as good a single-disc compilation as anyone could hope for. (There's also a five-CD version.) What sets it apart from so many other "best of Broadway" collections is its breadth--because it had access to a variety of record-label vaults it doesn't have to try to disguise gaps by using revivals or solo recordings. Here you get all the authentic stuff, including: Paul Robeson singing "Ol' Man River" from the first modern American musical, Show Boat; Ethel Merman singing "You're the Top"; the title song from Oklahoma!; Julie Andrews singing "I Could Have Danced All Night" from My Fair Lady; West Side Story's "America"; Betty Buckley singing "Memory" from Cats; Hairspray's "Good Morning Baltimore"; and "Defying Gravity" from Wicked, the newest show discussed in the PBS series. And it's hard to argue with the songwriters represented: Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Frank Loesser, Lerner and Loewe, Leonard Bernstein, Bock and Harnick, Kander and Ebb, Stephen Sondheim, and Andrew Lloyd Webber, among others. This is a pretty good compilation, but I have to wonder at some of the choices that went into it.
"Good Morning Baltimore" is almost the least impressive song from Hairspray. "You Can't Stop the Beat" was a much more anthemic song from that show.
I agree that it's too bad Les Mis didn't make it in. I would have traded that for anything Sondheim, although that's a personal preference :) .
Still, the opportunity to hear the original performers and orchestras perform these works, all in one place, is a great deal.

Great CD.......2005-11-01

This one plays in the car, on the ipod and in the house. When the kids were little they would ask if we could take them to "The Street". That is what they called Broadway (little did they know at that time how famous that street is). They still love it and we can not get enough of it. This CD covers the best and makes you want to go and see a live performance. You can not beat that.

Great selections, but bad transfers.......2005-07-27

This is a great taste of broadway. If you enjoyed the B'Way series at all, then you will probably enjoy this CD. My problem with it is that some of the songs sound like they were not remastered at all- the transfer to CD is terrible. The orchestrations in "You're the top" by Ethel Merman are muffled, and the song sounds like it was taken straight from an old record and slapped onto the CD without fixing it up. It doesn't sound very clear, which is a bit upsetting and annoying. Maybe this is just because that particular recording is older than some of the songs chosen to be on this CD. The more modern songs sound crisp and new and beautiful. "Swanee" is also very low quality as if it were just taken off of a record and put on the CD without any restoration. I just feel that these songs deserved better treatment and that we as customers deserve better treatment. Decca could have restored these songs and made them sound really good, but they decided just to slap them on the CD without touching them up.

I am surprised that nothing was chosen to be on this recording from Les Miserables since it had been on Broadway for 16 years and its tour is running until 2006. There were selections from Cats, Phantom of the Opera and Wicked, so I am not sure why nothing was chosen from Les Miserables.

Other than these few nit pickings, I think that this is a great introduction to musicals. It gives a little taste across the spectrum. Try getting the cast recordings of the songs that you really like on this collection. It's worth buying if you're a huge broadway fan.

Yes this is Some of the Best of Broadway!.......2005-04-08

This CD from Decca Broadway is a wonderful selection of some of

the "Greatest Hits" of the Broadway stage. Decca and Sony have

done an excellent job of remastering the various recordings, some

of which still show some of their age, but come across quite

well. Are there a lot of songs that I would have put on this

disc? Yes, but the ones on here are good choices. I may have to

get a copy of the Five disc set and the DVD's just to see if any

more of my favorites made it on the list. What this disc seems to

try to do is show the evolution of the Broadway song from it's

early days to the present. It succeeds quite well I think.

If you enjoy Broadway theater this CD is a must!

I loved listening to this CD. The music from Broadway's best loved musicals are on this album. I recogized most of these songs, even though I've only seen a few of them on the local stage. I have so many favorites on this CD. It is hard to pick one. I'm a big fan of Barbara Streisand. I loved her performance of People from Funny Girl. Memory is the hit song from the musical Cats. Betty Buckley's performance of this song is so emotional and sincere.

I loved the song Annie. It is a wonderfully optimistic song performed by the original Annie Andrea McArdle. Another highlight for me is the song One performed by the cast of a Chorus Line. Luck Be A Lady Tonight is another of my favorite broadway songs on this CD from Guys and Dolls. The music of the night is a beautiful song by Michael Crawford from Phantom of the Opera. Richard Kiley has such a strong and powerful voice. He sounds so inspirational singing The Impossible Dream from Man from La Mancha. My dream is to see some musicals on Broadway someday and listen to these songs performed live.

I'm surprised that there isn't any music from Miss Saigon or Jesus Christ Superstar included here. I think they are classic musicals with great songs Maybe they will appear on a future compilation from PBS.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Lots of great and clear vocals. I was looking for a musical mix and this has a nice sampling of many major songs but also some more recent stuff. I haven't purchased an import before but I would do it again if the opportunity presented itself. It is somewhat annoying to have three cds when I think it could have fit onto two. Still, more than I have complaints, I have compliments about it.

Somewhere on Tour, Maybe Cleveland, One of Many,Many Nights that all flow into One. The Plimsouls were on a Stage. Well, we got lucky at last !!! The Energy of One of those Nights, is Captured Right here on CD. YAAAH !!!

This was the 80's that Nobody told you about, the Smelly, Sweaty Nights of Live Rock Bands that played in these Dark Little dives for Lot's of Fame but little Fortune.

And the Songs: "A Million Miles Away", "Time Won't Let Me", "Hush, Hush", "In this Town" ...This Music is PURE and it's American. This Music was Played in 1966 and somebody will be out there in 2026 Playing it all over again, thank you Peter, Lou, Eddie and David-O for letting us Peek into your World...

This is a very Cool CD...

Not The '80s VH-1 Wants You To Remember.......2006-01-09

If you were a complex multi-celled being in the early '80s (i.e., more than just a sperm and egg), you probably recall "A Million Miles Away," the most ubiquitous radio and movie soundtrack (Valley Girl, The Last American Virgin) hit from The Plimsouls. But like The Knack, Cheap Trick and other guitar rock bands lost in the sea of synthy '80s new wave, The Plimsouls were best heard live. So here's your chance until the boys down in the lab get the flux capacitor into the Delorean to send you back to 1981.

This is the long-overdue cd issue of the plimsouls live album.
In short, this release is the release that fully does the Plimsouls justice. Purchase this album.

As for Mr. Eric Brown - who seems to feel the need to express the same "Paul Collins-is-amazing" sentiment on an any Paul Colins related project (even asking why Paul Collins is NOT on the release if he's not included on a random power pop comp?!?)-
why not just start a Paul Collins page instead of cutting and pasting the same generic Paul Collins piece about his acheivments, blind to the release you you're (not) critically commenting on.

I don't think you've ever commented on any of these releases except noting what Paul Collins has done. And that he was in
The Nerves with Peter Case of The Plimsouls.

One of the best live albums...EVER.......2005-08-22

In the 1983 film "Valley Girl" Nicholas Cage's character slams a Valley girl for what he describes as her love of "gutless" music. It is only appropriate that Cage's dialogue happens to be delivered as one of the world's greatest live bands plays in the background. And just what was the name of that decidedly non-gutless band helping Cage make his point? Why it was The Plimsouls, of course! The Plimsouls have two excellent 'scenes' in 'Valley Girl' and it is from this film that most people outside of L.A. became aware of the group.

As lead Plimsoul Peter Case more or less admits in his liner notes to "One Night in America," the group's studio albums never quite fully captured the spirit and energy of the band's live performances. This incredible release (which is a far superior sounding version of the French import release from 1988) (It also comes with a bonus track of "Sorry") should be purchased immediately by anyone who likes "non-gutless" rock and roll. It is a 13 track time capsule of pristine power pop from 1981 that will remain permanently lodged in your car CD player. Yes, it is THAT good. Oglio and the Plimsouls should be applauded for making this music available. PLEASE buy this CD so that the label will follow through on its promise to release a second installment (next year) in the live performance history of the one and only PLIMSOULS!

Pure energy! Wow!.......2005-08-17

As Peter Case indicates in the liner notes to this CD, you just need to hear the Plimsouls live to really appreciate how good this band really was. This show, from a 1981 gig (Cleveland?), highlights the band at its raw best - live in concert! It wouldn't do this disc justice to mention highlights as the ENTIRE disc rocks from start to finish, including my personal favorite "A Million Miles Away". Concerned about how good the quality might be from a show that was taped 24 years, ago? Don't be? The sound quality is excellent and the rawness of the sound makes you feel like you're right there in the front row. If you're a Plimsouls fan or a fan of the L.A. punk scene of the early 80's, get this CD now. You will NOT be disappointed. Turn the dial up on this baby. This thing cranks!

And to top things off, Peter indicates there's another disc coming next year. Next year can't come fast enough.

Hearing Custer LaRue's chiming voice for the first time recently was a truly startling moment in my quest for finding perfect, ethereal, moody melodies. As a matter of fact, her voice is actually astonishing. It evokes continuous waves of emotion. "Custer LaRue sings The Daemon Lover" is masterful and filled with emotional strife. You can almost feel the temperature change when you hear LaRue's lament. Listening to the lonesome and almost wailing cry of "Lord Ronald" washes shivers over me every single time. This collection as a whole is both a mysterious and emotional journey that wraps itself completely around you. Could she be the best kept secret in the world of classic voices? Methinks the answer is a definitive yes.

Several of the ballads on this wonderful CD will have the toughest misty-eyed by the end. Among my favorites "Binnorie", "Queen Jane" and "Lord Randal", the latter two sung with such heavy pathos that you can nearly hear your heart beating. Wonderful, powerful stuff.

Pure beauty.......2002-06-10

What? Feeble?? Maybe compared to a foghorn, but if that's what you want, you can sit in a harbor. But listen for yourself. I believe you will agree that Custer LaRue's voice is enthralling.

Her voice is a mountain stream: pure, clear, endlessly enticing, infintitely intriguing.

For this very reason, she is not cut out to sing rough sailors' songs. A L Lloyd sings "Fare you Well, Lovely Nancy" with rude tenderness that is quite moving. Custer LaRue's version is a scold, imposing current values on hapless sailing men. A pity, because she is a wonderful singer, America's best. But she really blows this song.

One song only though. Everything else is pure gold. I have enjoyed this CD for a couple years now, and it gets better with every listening. Treat yourself.

Pure magic.......2002-02-27

I have had and loved this album for years, but it took on a whole other dimension for me when I realized how much our infant daughter loves it. When she wakes up screaming from nightmares, I put the Daemon Lover in the CD player, turn up the volume, and within seconds she is calm and relaxed. At night she goes to sleep by traditional, soothing balads like The Ash Grove, which is a beautiful song. This album has an effect on her like no other!

Not just for babies, though, The Daemon lover is magic for adults as well. Ms. LaRue's voice is pure sunlight, and I strongly disagree with the reviewer who said the recording is feeble. As a matter of fact, I used it as a reference recording when purchasing a new amplifier several years ago. The soundstage is broad and the vocals are clear as glass. Highly recommended for audiophiles.

Traditional folk ballads from America, Scotland, and England. The well-known and talented early music ensemble, Baltimore Consort, does the instrumentals. LaRue does a good job with the vocals and her voice is well suited to the music.

One of the most agreeable releases by the Follow That Dream label to date, featuring Elvis Presley's opening night concert in Las Vegas on August 10, 1970. With the previously available recordings of other concerts from this stint ("That's The Way It Is", "Live in Vegas" box sets) this CD might have long lost its originality, but definitely not its impact.
Several songs were performed here live for the first time ("Something", "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "I Just Can't Help Believing", "I've Lost You", "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling") and with the Joe Guercio Orchestra making its debut on this occasion even the familiar songs received new arrangements. The band is superb and Elvis' full-blooded performance belies the often repeated remark that Vegas was an artistic non-event in his career. Among the highlights of "One Night in Vegas" are the opening "That's Allright", "Mystery Train/Tiger Man", "Polk Salad Annie", "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling", and "Bridge Over Troubled Water". A true live rarity is "The Next Step is Love".

The sound is great (it's not a soundboard, but one of the recordings by RCA for the "Elvis, That's The Way It Is" movie), the mix excellent. With five rehearsal cuts in slightly lesser sound quality this CD runs over 72 minutes.
Highly recommended.

That's the way it was.......2003-08-18

This is a complete live concert recorded August 10, 1970. It is recorded from a soundboard and is of excellent sound quality. Elvis and his band give the crowd a great performance. Of course, it is a very similar concert to many other concerts he performed around the same time. Several other concerts from this era are already on CD, so it is up to you if you need another one. As a bonus five rehearsal songs are included at the end of the CD. Here is the complete track listing:
