5 out of 5 stars Great cd.......2007-06-21

This is a great cd & was great on vinyl. If you like to rock n roll then listen to this one. I have all the cds & at one time had all the albums. Another great cd is their latest "Big Chain". It has some of their older music and also some new music. Get it, you will like it if you ever liked the Gunne. Sign me, still a 'Gunner'.

4 out of 5 stars if not for us eccentric music fans it would be totally forgotten.......2006-08-08

What a shame. Such a good debut album yet no one even knows who they are. Jay Ferguson is one of the luckiest or most talented artists. He achieved success in 3 forms (Spirit, Jo Jo and Thunder Island solo). This is a great, gritty, greasy, soulful southern rock album.

I would like to see a modern band do a cover so as to resurrect this quality band. How about Metalica doing Run, run run?

4 out of 5 stars Protypical Early '70s Rock.......2006-06-02

After reading Darth Kommissar's clinical Spotlight review of this record, I was sure of two things: 1) he wasn't around when this album was made, and 2) you can't analyze Jo Jo Gunne outside of the context of the time. The eight Customer reviews capture the essence of this record far more clearly.

In short, this record is rock solid. And it is THE place to start if you are looking into Jo Jo Gunne (this assumes that you've done the essential pre-requisite research into Spirit). It wasn't about greatness, it was about kicking out jams on Friday night, just as "RJ'ledog3'" said in his review.

In the early '70s, music had turned a corner. The Beatles were gone and there was no direction home. Altamont, Kent State, and the death of the New Left portended a darker future. The impact of bands like Led Zeppelin, Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath and The Stooges were peeling the layers of 60s idealism and basic, no-frills rock and roll bands rushed into the vacuum. Jo Jo Gunne was one of those bands. Still, Jay Ferguson was a convincing singer and songwriter and the tunes on this first album are almost universally strong, if never great. None of their subsequent albums would be so consistent (though the technical quality might be a touch better as der Kommissar suggests) despite the occasional gem. It was all over for Jo Jo Gunne in a couple of years. Jay Ferguson would finally attain radio success in a solo career in the late '70s before spontaneously combusting.

In the end, Jo Jo Gunne is not great rock & roll. But it is worthy. Any serious student of early 70s rock should definitely have this disc in their archive.

5 out of 5 stars Great Guns For Jo Jo Gunne.......2005-09-14

Jo Jo Gunne's debut album is a hot, greasy slab of straight-ahead rock n' roll, far removed from the progressive psychedelia that lead singer Jay Ferguson's previous band, Spirit, had been known for. The fact that the godawful Leif Garrett covered the band's semi-hit "Run Run Run" doesn't take away from the quality of the original. If you want Southern style rock without all of the patriotic political messages, here it is.

5 out of 5 stars Head banging music from the early 70's..........2005-08-25

This was what we listened to when it was friday after work and a group of buddys and myself would kick back and "relax" from the week behind us. It was sooo tooo bad that JoJo Gunne didnt quite click with the rock radio stations at the time. Some airplay though not much.. There was another party band simular in sound that was coming up at the same time called Bachman Turner Overdrive. They sort of stole the show. But damn!!!.. Jay Ferguson and the boys could hammer a tune out and make it feel good. Disco was coming up, the punk rock music was wearing us out and we just wanted to sit back and get down with some straight forward rock. Not overproduced and re-re-remixed and mastered. You can actually count all the instruments on one hand. JoJo Gunne was the answer in 1973. It still is now. A new re-union album with the original band is in the works for release this year. Can't wait..

5 out of 5 stars As good today as it was when I was a teenage pothead.......2007-03-12

Having discovered and admired Spirit in my teen years, I naturally followed Jay Ferguson's music career after that great band broke up. And while the first Jo Jo Gunne album didn't do much for me, this - the second - was a whole new world. But for me, notwithstanding Ferguson's ambitious songwriting and arranging, this album was about Matt Andes' guitar playing. Seldom flashy, he infused every song on the album with some of the tastiest licks heard before or since. He had a remarkable ability to make organic - rather than electronic - use of phase-shifting and delay, and his tone, which sounded as if he were coaxing it out of his guitar rather than simply laying on effects, was absolutely perfect. His phrasing, sense of melody and ability to take a solo through a dramatic arc were an epiphany to me. The good news is that 30 years later, as a middle-aged middle manager with caffeine substituting for alakloid compound, this album and Andes' superb guitar playing still bring on a chill.

Heard this on XM for first time in years. I really miss the rock of that era. Jay Ferguson(Spirit) had a good run with several albums. (yes, vinyl) I saw Jo Jo Gunne in Atlanta years ago. A fantastic show! Jay had on overalls and no shirt. The lead guitarist was chuncky and had black glasses. Awesome concert, I still listen to their music!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Jo Jo Gunne album .......2005-10-07

I purchased all four original Jo Jo Gunne albums as they were released, and the person who is telling everyone that the one with the black cover is the debut couldn't be more wrong! The first one is the one with the car and was released in 1972. Bite Down Hard is the second release from 1973 and was always my favorite. Check out the spacey ending to Special Situations - with headphones or while sitting directly between speakers. Very "trippy".

This is by far their best! With Jay Ferguson on vocals this band had reached their peak. One of my all time favorite albums. It just rocks all the way through!

Jo Jo Gunne played at Southwestern Oklahoma State University after the release of WHERE'S THE SHOW? The show was excellent and the crowd got into the boogie rock of the band. Jo Jo Gunne played a version of FRESH GARBAGE, the tune by Jay's old band, Spirit. I am looking forward to the release of their new CD with the reunion of all four original members. Check it out on the Jo Jo Gunne Website.

5 out of 5 stars Fine Melodic Rock.......2005-08-31

I purchased Jumpin` the Gunne in 1973 when it originally came out. It is a fine album of melodic rock. Thirty two years later , I still listen to it when I`m in the mood for high energy music. Time is the great test and Jumpin` the Gunne still rocks. In fact, all the Jo Jo Gunne CDs are worth owning.

2 out of 5 stars Real Biker Rock to Candy StreetCar Rock.......2005-05-02

Why did Jo Jo Gunne tail off in popularity following their first big release with the hit Run,Run,Run? Hard rock bands really liked the sound of that hit and those type of guys were the folks that really supported it. Some of the other songs on that album rocked, but from there the band adopted more of a pop, southern california teenybopper sound rather than the tougher hard-driving sound from RunRunRun. There were exceptions but Jo Jo lost it's focus on the more serious sounds. I mean bikers dug "Run" but they couldn't hang with much of the rest Jo Jo Gunne put out. Sure it rocked, but it was candy rock as opposed to the real gritty stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD from a sometimes forgotten band.......2004-12-05

The first thing that must be said is that Jo Jo Gunne needs to get much more respect than it gets. This is a Hard rockin' CD that needs to be had by any 70's rock fan. My personal favorite on the CD is "High School Drool". Spend the bucks to get this one!!!

In contrast to 'Jumpin' the Gunne', the band took its time making its last album, breaking in a new producer (John Stronach), a new guitarist (John Staehely) to replace Matt Andes, and crafting a more layered, reflective and mature sound. A fine and fond farewell from one of the best bands of the early '70s! Includes 'Where Is the Show?; I'm Your Shoe; Single Man; She Said All Right; S & M Blvd.; Falling Angel; Big, Busted Bombshell from Bermuda; Into My Life', and 'Around the World'.

4 out of 5 stars THE LAST GUNNE RIDES AGAIN.......2006-10-09

"Somebody said I was crazy to like it, asked what my youth was
worth . . . how could he know it's the greatest attraction on Earth?"
--- Opening lyrics, SO...WHERE IS THE SHOW?

This is the key to the Soul of a Rocker....in this case, a man named Jay Ferguson, captain of the ship-of-savants known as Jo Jo Gunne. One of the 1970s' greatest musical enigmas, Jo Jo Gunne fell --- or, more accurately "jumped ship" --- out of Spirit, America's greatest, most creative musical aggregate to date.

Pioneers of jazz-rock fusion years before Miles Davis' BITCHES BREW, Spirit's hard-luck story should be the backbone of a "VH-1: Behind The Music" segment that mirrors the travails described in Al Kooper's biobook, "Backstage Passes And Backstabbing Bastards" to which most Pop acts are privvy.

The sins bordered on criminal, in the case of Spirit...a band that should have been hailed within the pantheon of Rock popularity above any of their contemporaties, including their LA neighbors, The Doors. Spirit was just too good, in that sense.

And their commercial success came, literally, moments after their two "blonde bombshells" group members (songwriter/front man Ferguson and bassist/anchor Mark Andes) departed for a single-focused, more definable, seemingly more lucrative career point, forming Jo Jo Gunne in late 1971. (Spirit's 4th album, TWELVE DREAMS OF DR SARDONICUS, did not climb the charts with sufficient dispatch for the immensely talented duo. Tragically, it was the last missed-it-by-that-much for a band that, e.g., declined the opportunity to open for their long-time friend Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock. But, of course, who knew???)

Completely eschewing their esoteric roots, the Gunne's 1972 breakout, self-titled debut album still ranks among the greatest straight-ahead Rock albums of all time.

Twisting away 180 degrees from the over-produced wetness of SARDONICUS, JO JO GUNNE jumped feet first into the uncharted Mojave Desert of bare-bones, Southern-California rock-and-roll. (Fellow Asylum Records artists The Eagles, whose premiere album flew off the shelves in 1972, explored that same desert from the Country side.)

Stepping out from the dark genius that was Spirit, the Gunne melded Ferguson's previously unheard, barrel-house piano style and trademark sinewy, smokey-dark melody lines with his strange-and-wonderful lyrical paintings, all-the-while nailed to the floor by Andes' unmistakable bottoms. (Note: EVERY bass player should learn the importance of and the elements of Andes' unmistakable style, not only in cementing a band's overall sound through its disciplined lows, but also in its addition of counterpoint, color and movement to even the simplest moments.)

Later that same discography, WHERE'S THE SHOW if not floated, at least drifted their sound into a direction that could have saved the remainder of the decade from Disco. As it stands, this was the band's swan song. More's the pity.

The title opener, as always, was the dependable, Fergusonian killer single. More subtle, yet much more anthemic than most of the band's previous material and pre-sages Jay's later bent, especially the immense single, "Shakedown Cruise," from his REAL LIFE AIN'T THAT WAY solo LP.

Having seen the band on its final tour that largely pushed this, their farewell set, I was thoroughly impressed by the live execution of WHERE'S THE SHOW?'s beefy, expressive rock lines. The great and pleasant surprise was guitarist John Staehle's work: hot and fluid solos that were dramatically different in technique and technology from founding guitarist Matt Andes' strokes, Staehle redeemed himself from the abyss that was Spirit's extremely forgettable follow-up to TWELVE DREAMS OF DR SARDONICUS, called simply FEEDBACK. (In his, and his bassist brother Al's defense, they never had a chance. Especially since they had neither any appreciable songwriting talent nor Jazz chops.)

Be that as it may, SO...WHERE IS THE SHOW? demonstrated a newer, fresher, much more muscular and directed sound. Also, there is a LOT less clutter and over-production than on the band's two previous outings, BITE DOWN HARD (the weakest of the Gunne's four albums) and JUMPIN' THE GUNNE, which was infused with gobs of Ferguson's inimitable sense-of-humor, largely absent from BITE.

"Where Is The Show?" drafts the sentiments of the road (a shaft that Ferguson had mined previously, on JO JO GUNNE's "99 Days" and BITE DOWN HARD's "60 Minutes To Go") with a positive flush, dodging the complaints and getting down to the benefits and motivations of the ridiculous lifestyle that is rock-and-roll. "I'm Your Shoe" is a comedic show-stopper. (No one but Ferguson, other than perhaps Walt Disney, Chuck Jones or Dr. Seuss, could breathe life into an inanimate object with such panache.)

"Single Man" describes the honest sentiments of a man of integrity, pulled away from home and hearth by the necessary vagaries of, again, the rock-and-roll lifestyle. "Do you think I could have made it as a single man?" asks Ferguson, who forgives, "so let the foolish man gamble, crazy man ramble...all I can handle is some peace of mind...I'm a homebound rover, honey, think it over. Baby, we're doin' fine."

"Big Busted Bombshell From Bermuda" is another hilarious Fergusonian travelogue. (If Jay ever does a compilation of all his works, there are lots of creatures and habitats to be visited: "Animal Zoo," "Thunder Island," "Topanga Windows," "Babylon," "To The Island," "At The Spa," and many, many more. It should be called "MISTER JAY'S GREAT ESCAPES.")

Now, so many years later, the real question is: "SO . . . where's the GUNNE?"

Fans and true believers may not have long to wait: the original (and only valid) line-up of the band, including the incomparable Mark Andes on bass, reunited in 2003 to record a new album, titled THE BIG CHAIN.

Look for it~jk

5 out of 5 stars Great cd.......2007-06-22

It sure is great to hear this band in action again. My only regret is that I didn't know about this cd when it was released. I could have been listening to this cd much earlier.

Anyway this is a very good cd and the guys still sound great even after all these years. And I hope that there is another cd in the works for
Jo Jo Gunne to keep us 'Gunner' fans out here happy.
Sign me, still a 'Gunner'.

5 out of 5 stars As Good As it Gets.......2007-03-07

I'm not going to waste your time (or mine) with a lengthy review. Suffice to say that the original line up of this fine band got back together and managed to recapture and update the qualities that made them so good in the first place; this record is easily up to the standards of their "classic" 4 original releases. Sadly, though, this one was criminally underpromoted.

(Irrelevant, but I will add one thing thing in response to another review: I had no trouble whatsoever telling who was who in the photos.)

1 out of 5 stars Big Disappointment.......2006-11-07

Time to look up the word "lame" in the dictionary. How sad is this CD? Let me count the ways:

* The cheap, generic studio sound that manages to be both tinny and bass-heavy at the same time.

* Basically, they remade their first (and worst) album (it was so bad, I gave my copy away right after I bought it) and added six new "originals."

* There was, however, one really great song on that album ("Take It Easy" [not the Eagles song]). Now guess what? That's the only one they left out!

* They've also remade "Before You Get Your Breakfast" (a really great tune from their third album, "Jumpin' the Gunne"). The original version is ten times better.

The new material is more of the same, i.e., everything Jo Jo Gunne detractors love to hate, with none of the charms fans like me (and I may be a minority of one here) find amusing. Yet another sad footnote to the Spirit saga.

THE ONLY FUN: In the booklet, there are side-by-side photos of the band, "then and now." I've been driving myself crazy trying to figure out who's who. These guys have aged so much over the years, I can't even tell which one is Jay Ferguson!

5 out of 5 stars Ready Freddy, Rockin' Steady.......2006-09-06

As a fanatic Jo Jo Gunne fan, I approached this album with trepidation. I was afraid they might mess up and tarnish their legacy. Much to my relief, this album is fabulous. Even after thirty years, these guys are as good as ever. Why they aren't more famous is a mystery to me. I couldn't love 'em better.

4 out of 5 stars Totally Gunne..........2006-04-11

What do you say about an unexpected album by a band that hasn't been heard from in decades? I picked this up as soon as I saw it and was pleasantly surprised. It's a 50/50 mix of new material and old songs redone. The new material is true to form Gunne. Definitely no pandering to current tastes, just some damn fine music that would have fit comfortably on any of their previous albums. This is Jo Jo Gunne as I remember them, with everyone doing what they used to do like they used to do it, only better. Jay Ferguson can still belt out a tune with as much fire and conviction as he ever did, and every band member has only gotten better at playing his instrument. The performances are tight, and the recording quality is excellent.
As for the remakes... well... sometimes it's hard to let go of songs as I know them. That's more a matter of personal taste than any particular fault with what they did on the new versions. For better or worse, they happened to pick at least a few songs that are near and dear to my heart. For me, the successes are Babylon (certainly superior to Ferguson's solo remake), Shake That Fat, Run Run Run, and Barstow Blue Eyes. 99 Days is a tossup; both versions have their strengths. Academy Award and Flying Home, my two favorite songs from their first album if not their entire catalog, are a bit hard to swallow in their new forms. Well done on their own terms I suppose, but far enough from the originals to make me wish they'd left them alone. That's my personal preference of course. It's still a new Jo Jo Gunne album and a very nice surprise after all these years. Hats off to ya, boys! What else are ya hiding?

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "White Noise" Is The Very Best Kind!.......2000-10-14

This is the sixth and most likely final solo album from the former Spirit and Jo Jo Gunne lead vocalist and songwriter Jay Ferguson, and is sadly the only one at this time that has ever been released from a vinyl record on to CD. I do know that it was carefully chosen because it showcases his abundant musical talents extremely well! And why shouldn't it be so? Jay has invited some very accomplished musicians to help him out with his most recent audio masterpiece. The guest list includes famous composer and songstress Jackie De Shannon , and also guitar genius and former Spirit bandmate ,the late Randy California, who contributed his rockin' hot licks to the rappishly reminiscent title track "White Noise". Jay has put his undeniably signature spin on the cover songs "I'm Down" and "Baby Come Back", handily delivering very listenable versions of these familiar tunes. Original selections "I Come Alive" and "Empty Sky" slow the tempo down with a haunting , romantic beauty."In The Heat Of The Night" captures the restless, melancholic, bluesy feeling of a summer evening in the big city."Million$","She's Mine Tonite", "Inside Out" and "Tonite(Fallin' For Ya)" firmly round out this well produced disc. This CD has something interesting to listen to for all rock music lovers, with an eclectic mix of styles represented. It's a "must have" for any true classic rock and roll collection!
