TABITHA'S SECRET- DON'T PLAY WITH MATCHES -CD.......2007-05-19
As an avid, longtime fan of Rob Thomas I feared I would be unable to find these early recordings but once again AMAZON rules. My CD was shipped in a timely fashion and the pricing was great.I will cherish it forever.I have purchased gifts from AMAZON for friends and family members and have never been disappointed. Thanks!
This is the demo CD to Tabitha's Secret?.......2006-01-07
Because the other reviewers don't mention it and some critisize the quality of the music on the CD, I thought I would mention that this is a CD of demo songs that became the album Tabitha's Secret?
Per the official Tabitha's Secret web site (www.tabithas-secret.com): "Don't Play With Matches is a collection of original demo recordings made when the band was still alive. Tracks 1 through 8 feature material produced by the band itself, while tracks 9 through 12 were produced by a well known producer, who's name we cannot publish here. That explains why a couple of tracks appear twice on this compilation. This disc is considered a must have for serious collectors, containing original raw and unpolished studio performances from the mid-1990's."
This CD has really nice quality for a demo CD! It seems to lack fullness in a very raw way because it IS a demo CD.
I have to admit that I looked into Tabitha's Secret because I am a Matchbox 20 fan and I have found that I am as much in love with these songs as I am with Matchbox 20 songs.
I highly recommend that you visit the official website!
MB20 Fan!.......2005-04-28
I bought this because it was a pre-matchbox twenty CD and I was curious. I still love my guys, but this CD has some truly great songs on it (obviously they agreed - Rob fought to bring 3 a.m. with him, a song he wrote about when he was a kid and his mother was fighting cancer). You'd never recognize Rob Thomas through most of it; as much as I love this CD (and I do LOVE it!) - his voice seems to lack the passion or maybe confidence(?) you hear in his newer work. Still, this band was absolutely going places, whether it was Tabitha's Secret or matchbox twenty. 'Dear Joan', 'Forever December', 'Dizzy', and 'Here Come Horses' are all great songs. Absolutely worth it.
Pleasantly Surprised!!.......2005-03-09
Ok, so, yes, I'm a BIG Matchbox20 fan! And, I have to admit that I would never have looked up Tabitha's Secret had it not been for MB20! But I LOVE this CD! I think it is probably my all time favorite MB20/TS recording! It's real and a little bit raw. Songs like "Here Come Horses"...Oh, and "Forever December". Awh! (listen to 'em loud, it's the best!!!) And yes, wait for dizzy! Perfection!! Really, lots a good stuff!!! Be sure to check out other slices like "Paint Me Blue", and "Dear Joan", "High", and "Tired"! All in all...I am VERY HAPPY with this purchase!!! These guys rock!! These guys rule!
Fantastic considering they didn't know what they were doing.......2004-12-13
No one can deny that the popularity of Matchbox Twenty is what gave Tabitha's Secret any audience at all. If you aren't sure why Tabitha's Secret was popular when it is existed, it is because they sound like an amateur garage band. What makes it cool is that you can hear the beginnings of what will eventually become Matchbox Twenty (Imagine what it would be like if you could hear Axl and Slash in a high school band before Guns N'Roses).
This isn't to take credit away from Jay Stanley and John Goff (the two members who didn't later become part of Matchbox Twenty), because they had a really good start here. The sound quality is lacking and there is no complexity to speak of, but the lyrics are as intriguing as any Matchbox Twenty. The best I can say is that it would have helped if they had Kyle Cook and Adam Gaynor on guitar, but even Brian Yale (Bass) and Paul Doucette (Percussion) don't have the same level of skill yet that they will in Matchbox Twenty.
These songs will never win any awards, but they sound like a band that maybe someday will be something. If you like Matchbox Twenty and can overlook some elementary technical anmd lyrical flaws, you will love this album.
