Collected is GREAT. .......2006-11-02
Massive for the masses........2006-10-18
Future Fool Proof.......2006-05-03
A more compact musical overview than the earlier Singles Box: 1990-1998, Collected features 14 of the Bristol acts most popular moments with new tune Live With Me tagged on the end. Fans of the trio's early singles such as Daydreaming and Hymn Of The Big Wheel may be disappointed by their absence on Collected, but later masterworks such as Angel and Future Proof are given the space to breathe on this disc of ominous rhythms.
While 3D's sombre vocals are present on many of the key tracks, it is the appearances of guests that ensured Massive Attack truly soared. Tricky's early success Karmacoma, Liz Fraser's pristine additions to Teardrop and Shara Nelson's powerful rendition on Safe From Harm open Collected in fine form, with Tracey Thorn, Horace Andy and Sinead O'Connor among the additional guests that follow. Although there's a clash of styles as the paranoid vibe of Inertia Creeps bleeds into the mellow and sublime Protection, generally Collected acts as a fine introduction to the influential band that outgrew their berated trip hop label.
Collected is a sound investment by any greatest hits standard, but Massive Attack's back catalogue deserves to be investigated at a deeper level once this record has been devoured and deconstructed.
Either way, win or lose..........2006-04-15
"Safe From Harm" embodies everything that they were trying to do. It has a powerful soul vocal at the centre, and contrasts it with repetitive, gravelly-voiced rapping from one of the band members. In the hands of Massive Attack, rap was very rhythmic and often fast, but never aggressive. They used it as just another way to set a mood. In this case, and in most other cases, the mood was one of impending doom. The ominous rapping suggested that danger was just around the corner, and the main vocal attempted to add a sense of lost innocence in the middle of this danger. Oh, and the song also has an incredible techno bassline, which made it popular in the clubs for a time. This combination of sounds may not sound revolutionary now, but this song alone basically created a style known as "trip-hop." It was also ripped off by just about everyone in the next six years. Even Bjork jumped on the bandwagon in her song "Army Of Me."
Massive Attack had a great talent for reinterpreting the past. Early on, they sent a demo tape to Horace Andy, a reggae singer who had already had a long and illustrious career in his native Jamaica by that point. The man offered to collaborate with them, and went on to do so on every one of the band's albums. Usually, he covered such reggae standards as John Holt's "Man Next Door" and his own "Spying Glass," but Massive Attack gave these songs totally new sounds, emphasizing the unease expressed in the lyrics with their moody production. Unfortunately, neither "Man Next Door" nor my own personal favourite "One Love" is included on this CD, but "Angel" is. This is one of the band's best songs. It starts with a slow, creeping bass line and a dreamy vocal introduction from Andy, but then suddenly breaks out into a crescendo of driving, distorted guitars sounding reminiscent of the Cure or the Sisters of Mercy, only heavier, more rhythmic and more powerful.
The band could make uplifting tracks too, once in a while, like "Unfinished Sympathy" from their first album, or "Teardrop" from their third, but they were more at home with dark, slow rhythms and lonely, romantic atmospheres. Even "Teardrop" sounds lost and vulnerable, due to a superb performance by Elizabeth Fraser, who had by then already received a lot of praise from critics for her singing in the indie band Cocteau Twins. The black flowers on the cover of this album are a good indication of the band's aesthetic. The song "Blue Lines" from their first album, in which the band members took turns rapping, with impeccable rhythm, has precisely that kind of yearning, rainy-day mood. Unfortunately it's not included here. However, "Risingson," a bitter variation on the theme of failed love, is probably the best vocal performance by the band's core members, and it is included.
As time went on, Massive Attack gravitated toward the more dissonant, rock-influenced sound of "Angel." Since the theme and feel of their music was basically the same as before, this wasn't really that big of a change, but it did lead to increasing creative differences within the band. By the time their fourth album came out, three of the four founding members had left. As a result, the album seemed like a bit of a retread, and wasn't very well received by critics. This compilation may be an attempt to repair the band's image and put the spotlight on their best work again. As you may have gathered, a lot of good songs are missing, and even the bonus disc in the limited edition doesn't have all of their B-sides. If it were up to me, I would have added a few more album tracks and left off some of the singles. Actually, when I was starting to write this, I wanted to say something like, "Massive Attack were ultimately a singles band," and as I was writing that I realized that it wasn't really true.
But anyway, the album is still very good, and it ends with a sign that the band may not be finished yet. "Live With Me" is the token new song on the compilation, but it's not only a good song, it's their best song ever. Once again, the band calls in a veteran soul singer, Terry Callier this time, to lament about another failed love against a backdrop of strings and slow beats, but never has this combination sounded as good as it does here. Except now everybody is that much older, so instead of professing undying love, the song implores its subject, "Come live with me."

The group who single-handedly created the woozy, sexual, cinematic, and meditative dance genre known as trip-hop with their 1991 masterpiece Blue Lines later went on to craft gorgeous soundtrack music and generally emerge as one of the most forward-thinking, fastidious, and s-l-o-w production teams in pop music. Collected, a best-of compilation straddling the group's career, is the kind of record that reeks "contractual obligation," but that's not meant as a diss. If a kick-ass collection like this is what it takes for this heady group to keep the record execs happy while they slowly hone a new album, so be it. Much of the older tunes sound remarkably contemporary, which isn't surprising when you consider Massive Attack have always mixed styles in radical, new ways. The one new tune included to entice die-hard fans, the slowly percolating and deeply bluesy "Live With Me," is what soul music will sound like in the future. --Mike McGonigalAlbum Description

The 2nd Layer of the DVD, which is the opposite side of the disc that holds only the new Audio tracks, will not play on all machines!
I bought this thinking that there will be 2 discs and a DVD, but they put the 2nd disc on the back side of the DVD - and that layer will not play on my laptop.
It was a real bummer - as I wanted to put it onto my MP3 player.

Somewhat disappointing.......2006-12-15
To make a consistently listenable compilation, some volume tweaking would have been desirable.
The only other disappointment for me, is that one song I remember having on an LP didn't make this compilation. I think it contained the line "the subway is not the underground" but I can't remember the title.

Great complication of the band, and time capsule of the 1960.......2003-11-23
The band Country Joe and the Fish started out as a "jug band" from Berkeley,CA.The leader of this band is a musician and social activist named Joe McDonald. Anyway, as the 60s era progressed, CJ&F became a band of protest and psychedelia. To illustrate my point, let's look at the first few tracks.
The first track well demonstrates the overall theme of the band's future work and is a tune which was aimed at then President Lyndon Johnson-which may had created a lot of controversy at the time.
On this CD, you are exposed to jugband, psychedelia, and folk rock, not to mention anti-war satire.Let us explore some of the psychedelia. The song "Bass Strings," the Rag Baby single version, is an excellent example of the band's psychedelic side. Here, you hear the playing of the harmonica-which f a d e s into the sound of a dreary organ. In addition, the lyrics, well, has cryptic references to hallucinatory drugs-that is all I am going to say. The next track, Section 43, is another trippy song/Rag Baby single. An instrumental, Section 43 is organized in such a way that you may compare it to weaving in and out of a dream-beautiful piece. The song "Not so Sweet Martha Lorraine" is an organ-drenched classic that is about a reclusive woman who is unpredictable and is obsessed with death.
The landmark theme, in my opinion, is the band's anti war stance. The controversal "Fish Cheer/Fixin To die Rag" is a song mainly about satire and giving an "in your face" approach to expressing their anti-war attitude. On a serious side, the song "An Untitled Protest" is a song of both poetry and tragedy. Here, McDonald goes into extreme graphical detail about the atrocities of the Vietnam war.
These are just some of the highlights of this CD. There are other tracks included which contains references to hard luck(Sad and Lonely Times,Janis) and substance abuse (Flying High, track 4) which exhibit the common qualities of the sound of the 1960s. Though it would be nice if some live tracks or some outakes were included in this CD, this CD is a good place to start.

Great songs and singers.......2007-05-12
a fitting compilation.......2006-08-31
This is whimsical folk, beautiful melodies and heartfelt harmonies. This is nothing to rock out to although the musicianship is on par with anything that is out there.
The Roches are for people that enjoy beauty.
"Love Radiates" could melt the coldest heart. It is such a terrific and beautiful melody.
I saw them live (circa 1995) and they were tremedous. The vocals and musicianship are not the results of studio tricks. Their "Hallelujua chorus" is the equivalent to listening to Hendrix. It was a sight to be seen.
As you can see, I love the Roches. This is an excellent representative of their best songs. The 3 part harmonies, raw accoustic guitar, Robert Fripp infused guitar, its all there. This is the cream of their work.
If you go to their website, their participation in music is so earnest. If you want an autographed glossy of them, just e-mail and ask and you shall receive.
I wish they were still together and wish they toured outside of the northeast.
The Roches have always been the critics darlings and they absolutely deserved their praise!
Their best works are the Robert Fripp produced works, "The Roches and "Keep on Doing".
Buy it...even if only for their version of the Halleluiah Chorus!.......2006-06-03

The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26
Please buy it.
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Since its original publication in 1927, Carl Sandburg's The American Songbag has probably introduced more people to the glories of American folk music than any other book. On Parades and Panoramas, Dan Zanes performs 25 of his favorites from the 280 songs Sandburg published all those years ago. Zanes sings and plays guitar and mandolin in a style he aptly describes as "rough and instinctual," which is perfectly suited to these songs of sailors, hobos, cowboys, and railway workers. As on his previous recordings, Zanes is joined by a motley crew of musicians playing guitars, banjos, tubas, bouzoukis, drums, fiddles, and accordions. When this crowd launches into songs like "Titanic," which was composed not long after the ship went down in 1912, the downright silly "The Monkey's Wedding," or the naughty tale of "Willy the Weeper," they create a joyous racket that's hard to resist. Sandburg would be proud. --Michael John SimmonsCustomer Reviews:
Great for the whole family.......2006-05-18
As others have stated, this is also excellent adult music. I have it on my laptop now as well as on CD.
Excellent for the entire family and a fun history lesson as well.......2005-09-09
Not the 'Hello' song Dan Zanes I was expecting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-07-18
An American Classic.......2005-03-16
I'd agree it's not right to call it a kids album, but not because it includes songs with bawdy or edgy lyrical themes. The album is TOTALLY appropriate for kids, because kids eat the songs up (my 5 and 8 year olds go crazy to the thing and it plays endlessly in my home and car) and because the songs about the noted potentially dodgy topics are presented with such love, humor, honesty, naivete, and innocence. Indeed, the songs, along with Zanes's and excerpts from Sandburg's notes about them, provide a real education about American history and life over the past 150 years that is likley to be much more insightful, informative, interesting, and excting than what is presented to kids in school. But it's not a kids album because grups will wanna put it on whether their kids are around or not. I, too, spin the thing endlessly even when my kids are not around, and my rock and roll band has pulled several tunes off the record and presents them in settings that have NOTHING to do with kids.
The vision and courage the man shows in presenting such a collection, rough edges, grup themes, and all in the context of music for FAMILIES -- kids AND their parents-- is truly heroic. This is a record for the ages. Buy it for your kids, buy it for yourself, buy it for your parents and grandparents, buy it for the whole darn family, and for goodness sake, go see the Dan the Man and his Band perform if they get within a hundred miles of wherever you are.
This is a real American treat.

American Music of Hope and Glory.......2007-04-09
Unbridled spiritual energy.......2005-01-01
Otherwise, it is pure joy to listen to. The singing is full of that same raw passion that makes it sound so primitive. I've heard other albums where the sound is polished, concert-hall like, and as a result very dead. This is not that way; it moves and stirs as good spiritual music ought to.
This is a new field of music for me, even though I've sung in church choirs for years and listened to all kinds of classical music. Hearing this album makes me want to go find the sheet music and start singing it myself, it is so infectious.

Favorite Mary Black CD.......2003-07-12
The finest collection of a unique and pure voice........1999-02-23
The album's blend of traditional and contemporary themes is weighted toward the traditional, but the range of settings is very broad, so one doesn't tire of this collection. In "She Moved Through the Fair," originally a poem by James Stephens, the words and the arrangement are totally unlike anything I've ever heard. It shows, I believe, her willingness to stretch and create something truly unique. If you like a strong female voice both literally and figuratively, you must have this album.
A perfect melding of a beautiful voice with great material........1998-11-09
Some might say that "No Frontiers" is her finest album/CD but I prefer this because of the more traditional flavor. I just saw Mary in concert and she sang a few of the songs from this album but many more from "No Frontiers". So maybe I'm alone in my preference. Either way,if she comes through your town, don't miss her. Mary Black has a pure, powerful, and incredible voice.
