Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Collected is GREAT. .......2006-11-02

Massive Attack come back is excellent. It got a great selection of the most popular songs during their career, with a little upgrade I will say. This will be a wonderful piece for the M.A. lovers, and if you are not a fan, you will get hook to it.

4 out of 5 stars Massive for the masses........2006-10-18

Massive Attack has got to be one of the coolest bands on the planet. On many of these tracks, dark and creepy would also be a good description. Generally stuck in the trip-hop or electronica genre's, this is mood music at it's best. As with any collection favorites are missing, but for the new or casual fan, this might just be your first or only stop. Songs are drawn from all four albums, and a new track to close. Guest vocals could not have been more perfectly chosen, from Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins) on "Teardrop", Tracey Thorn (Everything But The Girl) on "Protection", and Sinead O'Connor on "What Your Soul Sings", among other singers. I really don't think this group has any equal. Only possibly Portishead comes close. If any of the people or genre's mentioned above interest you, I think you will love this. You'll most likely become a massive fan.

4 out of 5 stars Future Fool Proof.......2006-05-03

It's hard to tell who's in and who's out of the Massive Attack line-up these days (since Mushroom departed under a cloud in 1998 and Daddy G took a backseat on fourth album 100th Window, the name has generally become a dark and Gothic vehicle for sole founding member 3D), yet their legacy is assured thanks to their iconic 1991 debut Blue Lines and its staggering follow-up Protection.
A more compact musical overview than the earlier Singles Box: 1990-1998, Collected features 14 of the Bristol acts most popular moments with new tune Live With Me tagged on the end. Fans of the trio's early singles such as Daydreaming and Hymn Of The Big Wheel may be disappointed by their absence on Collected, but later masterworks such as Angel and Future Proof are given the space to breathe on this disc of ominous rhythms.
While 3D's sombre vocals are present on many of the key tracks, it is the appearances of guests that ensured Massive Attack truly soared. Tricky's early success Karmacoma, Liz Fraser's pristine additions to Teardrop and Shara Nelson's powerful rendition on Safe From Harm open Collected in fine form, with Tracey Thorn, Horace Andy and Sinead O'Connor among the additional guests that follow. Although there's a clash of styles as the paranoid vibe of Inertia Creeps bleeds into the mellow and sublime Protection, generally Collected acts as a fine introduction to the influential band that outgrew their berated trip hop label.
Collected is a sound investment by any greatest hits standard, but Massive Attack's back catalogue deserves to be investigated at a deeper level once this record has been devoured and deconstructed.

5 out of 5 stars Either way, win or lose..........2006-04-15

Although Massive Attack only released four albums in fifteen years, their musical ideas were usually ahead of their time, and set the tone for a lot of electronic music in the nineties. For instance, if you like Gorillaz, this compilation is really the blueprint for their fusion of rock, rap, and techno, as well as their use of different collaborators from album to album. Except Massive Attack were less flashy and more downbeat, and they drew just as heavily from soul and reggae as they did from those styles.

"Safe From Harm" embodies everything that they were trying to do. It has a powerful soul vocal at the centre, and contrasts it with repetitive, gravelly-voiced rapping from one of the band members. In the hands of Massive Attack, rap was very rhythmic and often fast, but never aggressive. They used it as just another way to set a mood. In this case, and in most other cases, the mood was one of impending doom. The ominous rapping suggested that danger was just around the corner, and the main vocal attempted to add a sense of lost innocence in the middle of this danger. Oh, and the song also has an incredible techno bassline, which made it popular in the clubs for a time. This combination of sounds may not sound revolutionary now, but this song alone basically created a style known as "trip-hop." It was also ripped off by just about everyone in the next six years. Even Bjork jumped on the bandwagon in her song "Army Of Me."

Massive Attack had a great talent for reinterpreting the past. Early on, they sent a demo tape to Horace Andy, a reggae singer who had already had a long and illustrious career in his native Jamaica by that point. The man offered to collaborate with them, and went on to do so on every one of the band's albums. Usually, he covered such reggae standards as John Holt's "Man Next Door" and his own "Spying Glass," but Massive Attack gave these songs totally new sounds, emphasizing the unease expressed in the lyrics with their moody production. Unfortunately, neither "Man Next Door" nor my own personal favourite "One Love" is included on this CD, but "Angel" is. This is one of the band's best songs. It starts with a slow, creeping bass line and a dreamy vocal introduction from Andy, but then suddenly breaks out into a crescendo of driving, distorted guitars sounding reminiscent of the Cure or the Sisters of Mercy, only heavier, more rhythmic and more powerful.

The band could make uplifting tracks too, once in a while, like "Unfinished Sympathy" from their first album, or "Teardrop" from their third, but they were more at home with dark, slow rhythms and lonely, romantic atmospheres. Even "Teardrop" sounds lost and vulnerable, due to a superb performance by Elizabeth Fraser, who had by then already received a lot of praise from critics for her singing in the indie band Cocteau Twins. The black flowers on the cover of this album are a good indication of the band's aesthetic. The song "Blue Lines" from their first album, in which the band members took turns rapping, with impeccable rhythm, has precisely that kind of yearning, rainy-day mood. Unfortunately it's not included here. However, "Risingson," a bitter variation on the theme of failed love, is probably the best vocal performance by the band's core members, and it is included.

As time went on, Massive Attack gravitated toward the more dissonant, rock-influenced sound of "Angel." Since the theme and feel of their music was basically the same as before, this wasn't really that big of a change, but it did lead to increasing creative differences within the band. By the time their fourth album came out, three of the four founding members had left. As a result, the album seemed like a bit of a retread, and wasn't very well received by critics. This compilation may be an attempt to repair the band's image and put the spotlight on their best work again. As you may have gathered, a lot of good songs are missing, and even the bonus disc in the limited edition doesn't have all of their B-sides. If it were up to me, I would have added a few more album tracks and left off some of the singles. Actually, when I was starting to write this, I wanted to say something like, "Massive Attack were ultimately a singles band," and as I was writing that I realized that it wasn't really true.

But anyway, the album is still very good, and it ends with a sign that the band may not be finished yet. "Live With Me" is the token new song on the compilation, but it's not only a good song, it's their best song ever. Once again, the band calls in a veteran soul singer, Terry Callier this time, to lament about another failed love against a backdrop of strings and slow beats, but never has this combination sounded as good as it does here. Except now everybody is that much older, so instead of professing undying love, the song implores its subject, "Come live with me."

The group who single-handedly created the woozy, sexual, cinematic, and meditative dance genre known as trip-hop with their 1991 masterpiece Blue Lines later went on to craft gorgeous soundtrack music and generally emerge as one of the most forward-thinking, fastidious, and s-l-o-w production teams in pop music. Collected, a best-of compilation straddling the group's career, is the kind of record that reeks "contractual obligation," but that's not meant as a diss. If a kick-ass collection like this is what it takes for this heady group to keep the record execs happy while they slowly hone a new album, so be it. Much of the older tunes sound remarkably contemporary, which isn't surprising when you consider Massive Attack have always mixed styles in radical, new ways. The one new tune included to entice die-hard fans, the slowly percolating and deeply bluesy "Live With Me," is what soul music will sound like in the future. --Mike McGonigal

Watch out!

The 2nd Layer of the DVD, which is the opposite side of the disc that holds only the new Audio tracks, will not play on all machines!

I bought this thinking that there will be 2 discs and a DVD, but they put the 2nd disc on the back side of the DVD - and that layer will not play on my laptop.

It was a real bummer - as I wanted to put it onto my MP3 player.

3 out of 5 stars Somewhat disappointing.......2006-12-15

There is good music here, but the cd compiler failed to 'edit' the sound volumes from the sources. Upto about track 8 the volume is low, then for the rest of the cd (from later recordings), the volume is significantly higher.

To make a consistently listenable compilation, some volume tweaking would have been desirable.

The only other disappointment for me, is that one song I remember having on an LP didn't make this compilation. I think it contained the line "the subway is not the underground" but I can't remember the title.

5 out of 5 stars Country Joe and the Fish Collect It.......2006-08-09

The best psychedelic band of the era. The music is still great 35 years later.

2 out of 5 stars Sorry I bought it.......2006-08-07

The title says it all. They could have put a better group of songs togather.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2006-07-23

I am a bit uncomfortable with some of the lyrics in these songs (especially Superbird) and at the time these songs came out I probably was on the opposite political spectrum from Country Joe. I did my duty and went to Vietnam and was never a war protestor. I did NOT consider the "I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-To-Die Rag" as offensive; more of an almost funny novelty song. I don't think many guys were thrilled to be going to Vietnam and the song really was kind of a morbid "in your face" way of dealing with it, regardless of one's feelings about the war. That song might possibly have meant more to some who went than those who didn't. All that being said, forget that one song and forget the politics and just listen to the music on the remainder of the album. Good music is good music, regardless of what message is trying to be conveyed. What you have here is really good music. I am really surprised this band didn't have more hits as they certainly know how to make appealing music with a variety of sounds. I didn't quite get the point of the good guys/bad guys cheer, which is not a song. Rock & Soul Music has a little too much crowd noise; it might be live; the other selections don't appear to be live. In spite of some things I didn't like, this is still a solid 5-star album.

5 out of 5 stars Great complication of the band, and time capsule of the 1960.......2003-11-23

This is, so far, the best commercially available album that chronicles "the band from Berkeley."Though no live tracks are included, several cuts from every studio album performed by Country Joe and the Fish is included here.
The band Country Joe and the Fish started out as a "jug band" from Berkeley,CA.The leader of this band is a musician and social activist named Joe McDonald. Anyway, as the 60s era progressed, CJ&F became a band of protest and psychedelia. To illustrate my point, let's look at the first few tracks.
The first track well demonstrates the overall theme of the band's future work and is a tune which was aimed at then President Lyndon Johnson-which may had created a lot of controversy at the time.
On this CD, you are exposed to jugband, psychedelia, and folk rock, not to mention anti-war satire.Let us explore some of the psychedelia. The song "Bass Strings," the Rag Baby single version, is an excellent example of the band's psychedelic side. Here, you hear the playing of the harmonica-which f a d e s into the sound of a dreary organ. In addition, the lyrics, well, has cryptic references to hallucinatory drugs-that is all I am going to say. The next track, Section 43, is another trippy song/Rag Baby single. An instrumental, Section 43 is organized in such a way that you may compare it to weaving in and out of a dream-beautiful piece. The song "Not so Sweet Martha Lorraine" is an organ-drenched classic that is about a reclusive woman who is unpredictable and is obsessed with death.
The landmark theme, in my opinion, is the band's anti war stance. The controversal "Fish Cheer/Fixin To die Rag" is a song mainly about satire and giving an "in your face" approach to expressing their anti-war attitude. On a serious side, the song "An Untitled Protest" is a song of both poetry and tragedy. Here, McDonald goes into extreme graphical detail about the atrocities of the Vietnam war.
These are just some of the highlights of this CD. There are other tracks included which contains references to hard luck(Sad and Lonely Times,Janis) and substance abuse (Flying High, track 4) which exhibit the common qualities of the sound of the 1960s. Though it would be nice if some live tracks or some outakes were included in this CD, this CD is a good place to start.

4 out of 5 stars Great songs and singers.......2007-05-12

The Roach sisters' style, words, and tunes blend to produce songs that go directly to my heart and then to my mind. A great compilation of their music.

5 out of 5 stars a fitting compilation.......2006-08-31

The Roches are ultra talented, excellent musicians, stunning vocalists, wonderful songwriters and a very interesting and rich band. However, they are probably not for everyone. Do not evaluate them by 30 second samples on this web site b/c their songs have drama and substance and they need to develop over their proper timespan.

This is whimsical folk, beautiful melodies and heartfelt harmonies. This is nothing to rock out to although the musicianship is on par with anything that is out there.

The Roches are for people that enjoy beauty.

"Love Radiates" could melt the coldest heart. It is such a terrific and beautiful melody.

I saw them live (circa 1995) and they were tremedous. The vocals and musicianship are not the results of studio tricks. Their "Hallelujua chorus" is the equivalent to listening to Hendrix. It was a sight to be seen.

As you can see, I love the Roches. This is an excellent representative of their best songs. The 3 part harmonies, raw accoustic guitar, Robert Fripp infused guitar, its all there. This is the cream of their work.

If you go to their website, their participation in music is so earnest. If you want an autographed glossy of them, just e-mail and ask and you shall receive.

I wish they were still together and wish they toured outside of the northeast.

The Roches have always been the critics darlings and they absolutely deserved their praise!

Their best works are the Robert Fripp produced works, "The Roches and "Keep on Doing".

4 out of 5 stars Buy it...even if only for their version of the Halleluiah Chorus!.......2006-06-03

I first heard the Roches on Saturday Night Live in the 70's doing the Halleluiah Chorus. I was a little boy then, but it implanted itself in my memory forever. Now, as a 33 year old Daddy and Husband, I find that the vocal harmonies and unique nuances of their well blended voices still brings a chill down my spine. Excellent! Even if you only buy it for this one track, it will be well worth your money!

5 out of 5 stars A Fan.......2006-03-24

I was delighted to see that the Roaches produced a collection of their best. Wish they would tour more.

5 out of 5 stars The Sisters Shine.......2005-12-05

Although it's impossible to include all the gems of the Roches' music in one collection, this is a fine example of one of the greatest sister singing acts I know. Their harmonies soar, the lyrics bend around the phrasing, and they are at once mischievous and poignant. While there is no comparison to a live experience, these highlights give a flavor of what this unique group is all about. Who else can pass off a hip a capella version of the "Hallelujah Chorus" and have an audience spellbound? (They even did this on the original 'Saturday Night Live') While a bit biased as I was in school with one of the sisters, I think their work stands on its own merit. I am happily seeing them again in concert next weekend and look forward to the richness of their music. If you ever get the chance to see them, don't pass up the opportunity. At the least, buy their albums and get ready for a real treat.

5 out of 5 stars If a saxaphone could talk..........2006-01-21

Warren Hill puts so much passion and heart into his music you can actually feel it through the intimate raspy sounds of his spirited playing. My wife and I love to share a bottle of wine, move the coffee table and dance the night away to Warrens smooth sax playing.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

Please buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Since its original publication in 1927, Carl Sandburg's The American Songbag has probably introduced more people to the glories of American folk music than any other book. On Parades and Panoramas, Dan Zanes performs 25 of his favorites from the 280 songs Sandburg published all those years ago. Zanes sings and plays guitar and mandolin in a style he aptly describes as "rough and instinctual," which is perfectly suited to these songs of sailors, hobos, cowboys, and railway workers. As on his previous recordings, Zanes is joined by a motley crew of musicians playing guitars, banjos, tubas, bouzoukis, drums, fiddles, and accordions. When this crowd launches into songs like "Titanic," which was composed not long after the ship went down in 1912, the downright silly "The Monkey's Wedding," or the naughty tale of "Willy the Weeper," they create a joyous racket that's hard to resist. Sandburg would be proud. --Michael John Simmons

5 out of 5 stars Great for the whole family.......2006-05-18

We have a five year old and the requisite library of kid's music, ranging from the bad (Disney) to the pretty good (Laurie Berkner, Ralph's World, some Raffi, etc). This is definitely my favorite of all of them (even compared to DZ's others). It is not insipid, dumbed-down, or guaranteed to produce parental insantiy. Zane's inspiration is to recall that folk music was originally meant to be sung (and listened to) by everyone, young and old. There was no such thing as "children's music" 100 years ago (perhaps nursery rhymes). And, as all parents know, kids have a wonderful ability to rise to the occasion. So, when presented with a CD that didn't sound much like Disney or Raffi (and suspiciously like some of Dad's music), my daughter did rise to the occasion. She listened intently to the lyrics about the Titanic, trains, hoboes, gamobliers and began to hum along. She then asked us about stuff - "What was the TItanic?" So we had fun and learned at the same time. Perhaps the ultimate tribute to DZ's vision came last weekend when we were all working in the garden and my daughter suddenly launched into "Son of a Gambolier", only she called it 'Son of a Chandelier". Brilliant!

As others have stated, this is also excellent adult music. I have it on my laptop now as well as on CD.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for the entire family and a fun history lesson as well.......2005-09-09

I can't agree with the previous post--what's not to love? Dan Zanes and friends have taken Carl Sandburg's collection of traditional North American songs from the 1927 Songbag and created an album which we all love. The arrangements are not all strictly traditional and have a rollicking, ragtag quality which makes it feel as if we can make the music ourselves, which is a concept Zanes promotes. This is in constant rotation in our player. My 3 year old son belts out "Son of a Gambolier" with zest, and we know all the words to every song. The liner notes have excerpts from the Sandburg Songbag which provide some interesting insights into American history, and easy guiter tab guides, which my husband (who just started playing guiter) uses to play to our children. We just love this CD, as well as the entire Dan Zanes collection. Save the Lauri Berkner for someone else--we'll take Dan anytime!

1 out of 5 stars Not the 'Hello' song Dan Zanes I was expecting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-07-18

I will never chance a CD again. We hate this. It's so slow...boring...and it reminds me of country music. Someone mentioned Lyle Lovett. Yes, I can see that. Wish I had known. I am going to sell mine asap! And buy Lori Berkner's kid cd's soon instead!

5 out of 5 stars An American Classic.......2005-03-16

Dan Zanes is a hero-- pure love and guts-- and it shows here on this record, which is an album of FAMILY MUSIC. This is not the kind of saccharin sweet sanitary crud so often pushed off on kids (Raffi, et. al.), which sane adults raised on rock and roll can't bear to listen to without upchucking. This is REAL music, about real lives and real people, performed by real musicians with real musical lives which EVERYONE in your house-- ages 1 to 100-- will dig deeply. The songs-- American roots classics, all of them-- are tuneful, the recording elegant and gorgeous, the playing and singing sublime, and the arrangements clever and engaging at all turns.

I'd agree it's not right to call it a kids album, but not because it includes songs with bawdy or edgy lyrical themes. The album is TOTALLY appropriate for kids, because kids eat the songs up (my 5 and 8 year olds go crazy to the thing and it plays endlessly in my home and car) and because the songs about the noted potentially dodgy topics are presented with such love, humor, honesty, naivete, and innocence. Indeed, the songs, along with Zanes's and excerpts from Sandburg's notes about them, provide a real education about American history and life over the past 150 years that is likley to be much more insightful, informative, interesting, and excting than what is presented to kids in school. But it's not a kids album because grups will wanna put it on whether their kids are around or not. I, too, spin the thing endlessly even when my kids are not around, and my rock and roll band has pulled several tunes off the record and presents them in settings that have NOTHING to do with kids.

The vision and courage the man shows in presenting such a collection, rough edges, grup themes, and all in the context of music for FAMILIES -- kids AND their parents-- is truly heroic. This is a record for the ages. Buy it for your kids, buy it for yourself, buy it for your parents and grandparents, buy it for the whole darn family, and for goodness sake, go see the Dan the Man and his Band perform if they get within a hundred miles of wherever you are.

This is a real American treat.

5 out of 5 stars Every song an American history lesson . . . .......2004-11-25

. . . how could you NOT share this CD with your kids?? It is simply and elegantly recorded, the songs are very singable, and truly the music of the people. I must disagree with the reviewer who said this CD was not for kids--frankly, you could hear songs with much more questionable lyrics on your local country music station. My kids and I have had this in the car CD player since the day it was released, and they love to imagine they're "son(s) of a gambolier" (and I don't think they will grow up to be barflys because they sing this song). I also highly recommend Dan Zanes "Night Time" -- my 4-year-old won't go to sleep without a few renditions of "Side by Side." Thank you Dan Zanes and friends!

5 out of 5 stars American Music of Hope and Glory.......2007-04-09

Although I have known about Sacred Harp Music for many years, this album utterly overwhelmed me in its power, beauty and expression of pure American strength and faithful surety. I grew up in the churches of Christ, one of the few American denominations that uses only a capella four-part harmony vocal music in their worship services. Shape notes were known to me since I was able to understand a musical staff, and we used shape notes for each note on the scale (a few more than The Sacred Harp Tradition). Alas, over time, the immense power and beauty of true Sacred Harp music was "homogenized" into congregational singing that remains quite beautiful, but no longer has the vigor of The Sacred Harp tradition. (The churches of Christ still, to this day, occasionally have "Sings" - an all afternoon singing festival with food and fellowship, as do Sacred Harp "Singing Classes" today). This album above all speaks - rather SINGS to the immense faith of Frontier America, and the absolutely majesterial beauty of music well-sung from the human heart, which is, of course, The "Sacred Harp". To any who want to experience a new (and very old) musical tradition, this recording will be one that you will never forget. All choral music singers and admirers should own this marvelous album. (Having a copy of the "1991 Sacred Harp Hymnal" in hand will make your enjoyment all the better!)

5 out of 5 stars Unbridled spiritual energy.......2005-01-01

Anyone who saw "Cold Mountain" and was struck by the vitality and energy of the hymn singing in that one brief scene in church will be immediately impressed with this stunning album. The album's only flaw is that, unfortunately, it does not include that hymn that was in "Cold Mountain" (it is titled "I'm Going Home").

Otherwise, it is pure joy to listen to. The singing is full of that same raw passion that makes it sound so primitive. I've heard other albums where the sound is polished, concert-hall like, and as a result very dead. This is not that way; it moves and stirs as good spiritual music ought to.

This is a new field of music for me, even though I've sung in church choirs for years and listened to all kinds of classical music. Hearing this album makes me want to go find the sheet music and start singing it myself, it is so infectious.

5 out of 5 stars I'm Terrible At Writing Reviews.......2006-03-23

I wish Amazon would quit asking me to write reviews. I'm woefully inept at doing so.I really like it, it's okay, and I hate it - those three pretty much comprise my reviewing ability. I also believe taste in music/books/whatever is entirely subjective. One person's marvel is another person's misery. I do, however, think Mary Black has one of the most gorgeous voices I've ever heard. I'm sure I don't have one album (oops - CD) by her I don't thoroughly enjoy. That's it. Told you I was no good at this.

5 out of 5 stars Favorite Mary Black CD.......2003-07-12

I own most of Mary Black's CD's, but this one is my favorite. In fact, I believe it may be my favorite CD by a female performer. Ms. Black's voice is crystal clear and haunting. When she sings "Song for Ireland," I can picture the cliffs and ocean in my mind. In my opinion, this CD has the best of Ms. Black's traditional Irish music.

5 out of 5 stars The finest collection of a unique and pure voice........1999-02-23

This collection draws from some of Mary's strongest work in the earlier portion of her career. Achingly pure is how I describe her voice. The album begins with her signature song, "Song for Ireland," which was re-recordered for this release. The song will grow on you if it doesn't captivate you immediately. It is followed by one of the few songs in Gaelic about Bonnie Prince Charlie. It has blown me away for years and continues to do so. For a change of pace, next comes a song by the Scottish balladeer, Archie Fisher, "Men of Worth." Mary's arrangement captures all the rhythmic and instrumental power that the song's message demands.

The album's blend of traditional and contemporary themes is weighted toward the traditional, but the range of settings is very broad, so one doesn't tire of this collection. In "She Moved Through the Fair," originally a poem by James Stephens, the words and the arrangement are totally unlike anything I've ever heard. It shows, I believe, her willingness to stretch and create something truly unique. If you like a strong female voice both literally and figuratively, you must have this album.

5 out of 5 stars A perfect melding of a beautiful voice with great material........1998-11-09

I love Mary Black's voice and this is her finest collection of music. Her renditions of traditional songs "Mo Ghile Mear", "She Moves Through the Fair", and "Fair Thee Well My Own True Love" are inspired . Her signature song, "Song for Ireland" is powerful and the anti-war song "My Youngest Son Came Home Today" is a work of art.

Some might say that "No Frontiers" is her finest album/CD but I prefer this because of the more traditional flavor. I just saw Mary in concert and she sang a few of the songs from this album but many more from "No Frontiers". So maybe I'm alone in my preference. Either way,if she comes through your town, don't miss her. Mary Black has a pure, powerful, and incredible voice.

    5 out of 5 stars Mary's Black's outstanding singing style.......1997-09-09

It was while driving on Highway 83, heading off to work, that I first came into contact with the voice of Mary Black. There I was driving along, humming, meandering among my thoughts whle traveling the blacktop when over the radio poured out a voice smooth as water with a depth and beautiful tonality that grabbed at my heart from the first note. Her "Song of Ireland" which is featured on this C.D. is not only my favorite song of hers but my favorite song of all. The words, the music, the melody line, and finally her voice combine to create not just a song but an experience. I was transported and frozen deep in listening while driving in the early morning traffic. Even after the last note dissapeared and I had scrambled to jot down the name of this amazing singer as the D.J. announced it, her song, her voice, stayed with me making my day that much brighter, more perfect, certianly more enjoyable. Mary Black's voice is an experince no true music lover should be without and I highly recommend this C.D. END
