Los Lobos's second full-length album was a transitional affair for East L.A.'s favorite musical sons. On their debut EP, ...And a Time to Dance, and especially on How Will the Wolf Survive?, Hidalgo, Rosas, and crew proved themselves to be Mexican American roots rockers nonpareil. While "Don't Worry Baby" demonstrated that Chicanos could play hard R&B as rough and tough as any down-South funk-soul outfit (Willie Dixon would be writing songs with Los Lobos by the time of their next album), By the Light of the Moon is a much mellower, soul-searching affair. The album was released in the era of Bruce Springsteen, the Blasters, the Del Lords, and other politically and socially aware "blue collar" rockers--which resulted in the Lobos dudes exploring similar lyrical themes. "One Time One Night," the opening track, remains one of the band's all-time classics--yet another exploration of the darker side of the American Dream, with some beautiful music (and musicianship) backing it up. And "River of Fools" remains one of the group's most beautiful ballads. Not that it's entirely a "slow dance" affair. Their Motown cover roots shine through on "Rosa Lee," while "All I Wanted to Do Is Dance" spotlights some pseudo-funk, Lobos style. Fans seem to have mixed reactions to this more than any other Lobos album, either considering it their finest or worst. La Bamba would be next, making them stars of a sort, but the lyrical experimentation on this album certainly set the stage for the musical experiments that ultimately resulted in their masterpiece, Kiko. --Bill Holdship

5 out of 5 stars Strong From Start to Finish!!.......2007-04-24

This album came out right before "La Bamba" made Los Lobos a household name briefly in 1987. Unfortunately, in all the hubbub over that #1 song, their album got lost along the way, and underperformed commercially. Thus, many people missed a brilliant album with no weak spots anywhere. I have had this cassette since 1987, and am patiently waiting for the band to have Rhino remaster their first few albums. The originals sound pretty good still, but hearing amazing songs like "River of Fools" and "One Time One Night" in glorious Rhinophonic sound would be to die for. For those who want to get this now, find a used CD copy at your local store and hear the sound of a band that has few rivals in American music history.

5 out of 5 stars Good-time rock & roll. Happy and upbeat. Party!.......2004-10-21

Mixing a bit of Tex-Mex with that Old-Time Rock & Roll, Los Lobos keep you tapping your toes, singing along or getting out of your chair to dance. Even the potentially somber "Is This All There Is" is a real sing-along cheerful number. "Shakin' Shakin' Shakes" delivers exactly what the title promises. "All I Wanted to Do Was Dance" moves you to do just that, dance with the guys. "The Hardest Time," nominally a sad ballad, is a tuneful cut that'll get your fingers moving. You'd expect a song called "Tears of God" to be mournful, but you'll find yourself humming harmonies along with its optimistic energy. When they sing "My Baby's Gone," an up-tempo blues, they sound HAPPY about it! In fact, that's the main thing about this whole album: it's got a HAPPY mood. Not a downer on it. There aren't many albums that are just plain good-time music, fun to listen to. This is one of them. These guys are enjoying themselves, and it's infectious. I love it.

5 out of 5 stars These guys just keep making great albums.......2002-06-10

BY THE LIGHT OF THE MOON by LOS LOBOS is another gem that this group has turned out. LOS LOBOS are a great band that has the ability to combine all of their musical influences together and make great sounding songs. PRENDA DEL ALMA shows the band digging into their Mexican heritage and belting out a traditional song, which is just a beautiful song. This album is a good rocking song that has some standout tunes on it. Listen to the songs ONE TIME ONE NIGHT, SHAKIN SHAKIN SHAKES, ALL I WANTED TO DO WAS DANCE, ROSA LEE(SET ME FREE), THE HARDEST TIME, RIVER OF FOOLS, THE MESS WE'RE IN, and TEARS OF GOD. Actually every song on the album is good, I cant think of any low points. All of the songs have some killer melodies to them and I think that you will enjoy this album. PEACE, ESE

5 out of 5 stars An excellent view of Native American/Latino view of life!.......1999-07-11

I am a fellow musician and every time I play "One time one night" the dance floor is full. I live a native community (Mi'kmag/Micmac) on the east coast. Many of our idea's of life are the same as native people.

Thomas Hampson is a persuasive advocate for these treasures from the Library of Congress' vast collections, so this CD's generous sampling leaves you wanting more. It covers the American songbook in all its variety, from traditional "folk" items like Shenandoah to Stephen Foster to the immigrants Erich Korngold and Kurt Weill to Leonard Bernstein and contemporary composers. Hampson adjusts his flexible, light baritone to fit each song. The voice is full and resonant on Danny Deever, simple and direct in 19th-century traditional songs and ballads, and nuanced in songs like Ned Rorem's "As Adam Early in the Morning," one of several on the disc with texts by Walt Whitman. A standout is the last song in this recital, one that leaves you with thoughts about music, history, and our nation's continuing issues, "Ethiopia Saluting the Colors," by Henry Burleigh. Most of the selections are performed with piano accompaniment, but several are with a small ensemble of traditional instruments. A word of caution: everything was recorded in the 1990s and presumably was available piecemeal on previous releases, although few are likely to have more than a handful of these 20 gems. --Dan Davis

3 out of 5 stars It's lovely - But not newly recorded!.......2006-10-04

I don't think this recording deserves One Star ratings or that the artist deserves such crude bashing. And re: Hampson's eye-colour.... Uh, these aren't lenses? He has blue eyes. I met him many times and...indeed, they are dark blue.

Anyhow, this is what Hampson is focusing on right now, American song. While those aren't exactly my thing I have to say that he sings them beautifully. I wish he'd stick to that rather than heavy Verdi and Wagner which his voice isn't right for.

1 out of 5 stars Yet another compilation.......2006-06-13

I am a huge Tom fan. I go to his concerts and buy all of his CDs. I must say that I have been disappointed by this CD because it's entirely made of old recordings. There's a new photo on the cover, but that's all that is new here. So if you've bought your share of Tom CDs over the years, you want to check out the track info before you guy this one.

Now, Tom has been on tour and I STRONGLY recommend that you go see him next year when he comes through your city.

The other thing really annoying is that on the CD where you'd expect information about the music or the recording co., you instead get a large warning label from the FBI on pirating.

1 out of 5 stars how precious!.......2006-05-08

Thomas Hampson swoons and croons to monotonous effect throughout this tired collection; again displaying his ego and faux scholarship in ample measure. Oi-vay, what a disaster! And what is with the blue contact lenses in the Jacket phot? Hampson's eyes are brown. What an unbelievably vain Diva!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing Duplication.......2006-01-17

I have not even heard the album, and I will not. Although I revere Mr. H. in just about everything he does, especially in song and Lieder, I am very disappointed that so many of these songs appear on other cds of which I already have about 19 of him. I think he and the producers should have chosen totally NEW material for this instead of drawing on his past achievements. I have no reservations about his performances, for I have seen him at the Met in opera and at Carnegie Hall in Mahler. I value them and all of his past cd productions.

3 out of 5 stars If you like this sorta thing.......2006-01-17

Here Mr. Hampson is in his element. Unlike his less than viable attempts at Opera, Mr. Hampson is a thorough and intelligent singer of songs. His affectations, so fully inappropriate in bigger operatic literature, work well with the intimate nature of these sweet and personal songs. If you are Hampson fan, this album will thrill you.

Contemporary composer Ned Rorem is typically likened to an American Schubert (living in Paris) for the fecundity, emotional range, and quality of his songs (though this represents only one facet of a prolific career). And Rorem's masterful 1998 cycle Evidence of Things Not Seen would seem to justify that reputation, as does this marvelous anthology from the Rorem songbook of the past half-century. The composer is fond of dividing musicians into the "German" and the "French," clearly identifying himself with the latter for the elusive sparkle and subtle play of shadows that characterize his art. What other kind of sensibility could "through-compose" Gertrude Stein's "I Am Rose" in a deftly perfect 27 seconds? Fortunately, American lyric mezzo Susan Graham intuitively understands this expressive aspect, as does pianist-partner Malcolm Martineau. Graham is constantly attentive to the marriage of music and text in the 32 songs here and phrases their little worlds into being with grace and wit. She can shade to a sweet vanishing point or allow her voice to blossom, orchidlike, into a dazzling profusion of colors. Few of these songs, which draw on the poetry of Walt Whitman, Theodore Roethke, Frank O'Hara, and many others, last more than two minutes. But their resonance lingers, whether in the haunting "Opus 101"--with its lean but potent string trio scoring--or the enigmatic "That Shadow, My Likeness" from Whitman. --Thomas May

4 out of 5 stars One last touch of Paris (but oversold by the critics).......2005-10-11

Ned Rorem is the last survivor, since the death of Virgil Thompson, of the long reach that Paris exerted over a generation of American expatriate composers, many of whom drifted overseas between the wars to study with the legendary Nadia Boulanger. Rorem's songs sometimes have American folk roots, but mostly he writes chansons, and like their French counterparts, his are crystalline, spare, sophisticated, and precisely defined emotionally.

If he were more tlaneted he might have wirtten masterpieces, but mostly this sounds like Samuel Barber on skim milk. Rorem often sets minor, if not trivial poetry. His lyrical gift is modest. But there's no doubt that he has been neglected, largely because of his stubbornly tonal conservatism, and now that tonality is repsectable again, he is being accorded last-minute honors. I'm glad for him, and his best work, which consists of his multi-volume memoirs, has added much to American culture. But even when skillfully sung by an artist of the caliber of Susan Graham, a hour's worth of Rorem's tiny jewel-like chansons is about twice too much at one sitting.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful perforance of excellent songs.......2005-01-20

I'm a neophyte to Ned Rorem's work. To be honest I purchased this CD because I really enjoy listening to Susan Graham. Although I really love hearing Ms. Graham's opera performances, I find it refreshing to hear her singing something in English. I also appreciate how she's taken time to perform something other than opera. Susan Graham's performance of Ned Rorem's songs has me seeking out other performances of his work.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Rorem Songs!.......2004-05-18

Susan Graham has a remarkable mezzo voice and sings Rorem as though she really is a sounding board for the composer. Kudos to her and this CD comes highly recommended to newbies to Rorem songs and those many die-hard fans!

3 out of 5 stars Come To Pop, Baby!.......2004-03-12

Recently, I heard Susan Graham on Garrison Keillor's "Prarie Home Companion" show. Wow! I didn't know who she was, but she had so much humour, verve and style while singing some show tunes, and that incredible voice. I rushed to amazon but all the English language songs I could find seemed to be on this album of Ned Rorem music. Well, whatever the weight lieder songs carry for the Germans, it seems that art songs in English mean songs you can't snap your fingers to, can't slap out a beat to and would never, ever, sing with your friends. I know, I know, I'm a Philistine, but please, Ms. Graham, give us an album of American popular classics, show tunes and the like. When I listened to you on Mr. Keillor's show, if I had been a bell, I'd have been ringing too! You are simply great. Don't let the classical music fans have all the fun. Throw a little our way too. Pretty please.

5 out of 5 stars Worthy indeed - a gem.......2002-08-27

I cannot disagree with "A Music Fan"'s panning of this CD. Having first purchased the Hearing CD which he/she references, I reached the conclusion that Rorem's music was too knotty and "20th century" for repeated listenings and enjoyment. This CD with Susan Graham completely reversed my opinion. The songs are indeed chosen to be accessible, but they are much more than that. They are, simply stated, lovely. This is a disc I will play again and again, and has caused me to investigate many other Rorem CDs. I just came on line to buy it as a gift for a friend. Rorem deserves his due, and this disc gives it to him.

5 out of 5 stars Kindler, Gentler Music.......2007-04-17

This combination of musical scores from two of Doris Day's earlier movies is an album one can listen to again and again, each time savoring the gentle flavor of the time the songs were scored. We miss these simple love ballads today, and must revert to "oldies" to rekindle the spirit. These "oldies" are among the best there are.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2005-10-08

I'm a huge Doris Day Fan. I was very excited to find this CD. However, it's my own fault for not reading the description closely enough. If you are a fan of the On Moonlight Bay/By the Light of the Silvery Moon movies, you will be disappointed to learn that the male portions of the songs are NOT performed by Gordon MacRae. Lyrics are different than in the movies - it was just not very enjoyable. Doris' performances, as always, a pleasure - but vocals by Gordon MacRae would have made this a top-notch "must have".

5 out of 5 stars The soundtracks to two of her best musical on one CD!!.......2003-12-08

You I'm just 16 years old and I'm smart enough to know that Doris Day is the worlds most underrated singer. This cd is her best, you get two soundtracks to her best two musical on one CD!!! You get all the Songs from Moonlight Bay, and Silver Moon. This is fun music the whole family will enjoy. It's great make out mood music too baby!!!

4 out of 5 stars Great Day At The Movies.......2001-10-26

The music on this cd is culled from two of Doris Day's best musicals. The songs range from upbeat and happy to sweetly sentimental. They lift your spirits and help you focus on the positive and beautiful sides of life. No wonder Doris was the number one box office attraction for more than ten years! We sure could use her today!

3 out of 5 stars not her best work.......2001-02-20

This CD is from two films with Doris Day; Moonlight Bay and By the Light of the Slivery Moon, both appropriately with "moon in the title because they are indeed moony. Basically, the only reason you will enjoy this CD is either because you like the films a lot or because you LOVE Doris Day. While Doris Day sings lesser material better than most others sing good songs, you probably should stick with her hits.

5 out of 5 stars The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

Album Description

Produced by Doug Haywood, this is a romantic collection of innovative guitar techniques and live-each-day philosophies, woven into song by the steady hand and knowing heart of the Psycho-Desperado. "Affected By The Moon" is a gypsy minor shuffle, atmospheric as a night in Paris. "97 Hillside Road" is a poignant and vulnerable song about a house full of memories. "If Not Now" is a cowboy samba celebrating the spirit of manana, lyrical as a full moon in Old Mexico. "Inside Of My Face" is pure folk-noir! At once hilarious and uncomfortably true, it looks playfully at what can happen when we give in to the pathetic mewlings of our brain stem. "Laurie Ann" is a rocking tribute to an ex-girlfriend's Louisiana accent. Masterfully crafted and tastefully accompanied, these songs are performed with the acoustic guitar sharing the center stage with that...that VOICE!

5 out of 5 stars Pickin' and grinin'.......2003-01-23

I first heard "Blue Train" on the radio and immediately fell in love with the single. It took me a while to pick this album up, but boy was it WORTH the wait! Great acoutsic cowboy tunes with heartfelt lyrics and skilled songwriting. While Blue Train is still my favorite track, the remaining 12 are so solid, they are all tied for 2nd place. Highly reccomend this disk!

5 out of 5 stars AFFECTED BY THE MOON SHINES.......2002-10-02

As a long-time fan of Chuck Pyle's I was not surprised to find that AFFECTED BY THE MOON was a musical jewel.

Loaded with killer songs, most of which he wrote himself, the CD is a great mix of several types of music. The title track is reminiscent of a 40's torch song and you can almost feel the magic of the night and the moonlight. On "97 Hillside Road," Chuck's voice really soars and you can feel the pain with him on this tale of lost love. "Blue Train" is a driving, mid-tempo number written by Tom Kimmel & Jennifer Kimball and although the subject matter is sad, the melody and tempo have you feeling better before the song ends. "Inside My Face" is a cool take on how whacky we all can be and the instrumental, "Spank" shows the great guitar playing which has made Chuck Pyle a western favorite for years. Check it out. Chuck Pyle will not steer you wrong. A great listen from beginning to end and a CD that's bound to leave you happy.

5 out of 5 stars Rapoon - "Darker By Light".......2001-01-28

Rapoon is Robin Storey, a founder and former member of Zoviet France. Over the last four years he has released four full-length CDs, a double CD, two seven inch singles and a DAT (Digital Audio Tape), and has contributed to several compilations. Those familiar with the music of his former group will be surprised by the different directions he takes in this solo project, although echoes of Zoviet France can frequently be heard.

"Darker By Light" is the third and final installment in the Rapoon trio to be released by Soleilmoon Recordings. "Recurring (Dream Circle)", released in April, was the first in this series. "Errant Angels" followed in May. Each of these releases presents Rapoon from a completely different angle. While the first CD was a look into the past, and the second was a snapshot of live improvisational performance, "Darker By Light" is an entirely new album, meticulously recorded and engineered in a studio setting, with all the attention to detail that's expected. The music on "Darker By Light" is both rhythmic and ambient, and like the earlier CDs, flavoured with Indian and other Asian touches. The hypnotic and mesmerizing structure are like nothing else being produced today, although many will draw parallels with label mates Muslimgauze and O Yuki Conjugate.

I highly recommend this CD :)
