This 16-track anthology spans the first decade of albino Texas blues guitarist Johnny Winter's career, especially the early (1969-'73) Columbia albums that built his legend. While some purists have groused at his often manic precision, this collection makes a point of underscoring his impressive range as a musician. The fervent gospel-blues of "I'll Drown in My Tears" showcases Winter's vocal stylings (and is one of several tracks featuring brother and frequent sideman Edgar), then segues neatly into the spare, acoustic heat of the dobro-'n'-flute rarity "Come On in My Kitchen." But the emphasis is on Winter's showy rock star turns and the collaborations with his potent band (and fellow axeman Rick Derringer and his cohorts from the McCoys, of "Hang on Sloopy" fame) on "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo," "Still Alive and Well," and forceful live workouts of "It's My Own Fault" and "Mean Town Blues." His original, late-'60s power trio is on display here, too, and that small, formidable outfit can't help but emphasize the debt that Stevie Ray Vaughan and many of his musical progeny owe Winter. Indeed, Winters's bassist in the trio was none other than Tommy Shannon, who would enjoy another turn in the spotlight a decade later in Vaughan's Double Trouble. If American electric blues is your gospel, this collection should be one of its cornerstones of faith. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars BLUES BABY.......2007-04-05

You know if Johnny did't exist you would have to think he was a work of fiction cooked up in some promoters mind in the late 60's high powered Blues Boom. Johnny was certainly in the ritht place at the right time. The man was the real deal with a depth of talent rarely seen...and he was well versed in a lot of music styles besides the blues and thats what sets JW apart from the crowd--besides being a 6' albino from Texas. All in all this is a great collection of songs from an American Treasure..He dam well should be!!

4 out of 5 stars winters attacks the blues.......2007-01-12

I think he is one of the best musicians that has redone the blues, he could play the guitar and make it sound like his second nature

5 out of 5 stars Winter shines in the summer also.......2006-07-13

classic Johnny Winter songs are a haven for old electric blues fans--

5 out of 5 stars Great starter CD.......2004-06-21

This is a great CD to get you going into the world of Johnny Winter.

I'm not too thrilled about the Rick Derringer tune but a little bit of everything is covered here. From the rocking 'Johnny B. Goode' to the slide playing on 'Highway 61 Revisited' to the shredding on 'Hustled Down In Texas' to the melodic blues of 'It's My Own Fault', this is a great buy.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Johnny Winter.......2003-01-01

This is a nice CD that covers the early years of Johnny's career. His range in many aspects is one of a kind. Its nice to feel the music rather than just listen to the music. For all you young rock and blues fans take notice, Johnny truly is an American guitar legend. Go out and get this one now!

      3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2004-03-13

This live album should have been really great, especially for fans who prefer Johnny Winter's bluesiest material. The track list is pure blues, from Robert Johnson to Memphis Slim, and there are some fine moments here, but "The Best Of...Live" ultimately winds up being a disappointment.

The sound is mediocre at best, and there is no seperation of the instruments. The drums, especially on some of the older tracks, sound like somebody is hitting a plastic bucket. And while Johnny Winter's slide playing on the ten-minute "Come On In My Kitchen" is really good, his extended soloing on the twelve-minute "Mean Mistreater" is repetitive and, well, boring.

"Somethin' Goin' On Wrong" is sort of a "Dust My Broom"-cover with lyrics from other early blues songs thrown in. It's okay, but it could have been a lot better with a tighter arrangement. Memphis Slim's classic "Mother Earth" doesn't work tremendously well is this slow and not particularly melodic arrangement, but Winter's playing is pretty good. "Messin' With The Kid" is too good to ruin, and a rough rendition of Winter's own "Black Cat Bone" is nice, except for the lousy sound.

The sound on "Mean Town Blues" is even worse; Johnny Winter's voice sounds "fuzzy", like a old, scratchy LP, and is way too low in the mix. Too bad, because the song itself is okay.
"The Best Of Johnny Winter...Live" has its moments, particularly "Come On In My Kitchen", but it is mostly for Johnny Winter-fanatics who will probably want to hear these performances in spite of the sound, which goes from "so-so" (the first two tracks from 1978) to "unacceptable" (the last three from 1968).
They aren't exceptional enough for casual fans to sit through, however.
      2 1/2 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing can beat this live!.......2001-02-02

What can I say about this live album besides great? It is just awesome! I found this album at the borders, and I was thinking it was a bootleg, and it seems not... whatever... anyway, if you like Johnny, you can't miss it! Again, this is such a great live from the late 60s when Johnny was at his peak! I've never listened to such a great version of "Mother Earth" "Mean Town Blues" and "Mean Mistreater." I also love this live albums, but this is as great, if not, greater than the rest of his live albums! You won't be sorry to take my review, satisfaction is 120% guaranteed! ;) http://communities.msn.com/60s70sRocknRollCommunity
