The midtempo songs on Alice Peacock's self-titled album focus on folky pop-rock confections a la Sheryl Crow and Shawn Colvin. "Bliss" (featuring John Mayer) and "Imagination" (bolstered by Indigo Girl Emily Saliers) ride a midtempo mix of multiple guitars and harmony vocals, while "I Hear You Say" and "I'll Be the One" recall Faith Hill. "Alabama Boy," meanwhile, takes its cues from Joni Mitchell. "Into the Light" is a soaring slice of country-rock, the hidden track "Northern Star" a delicate stab at cabaret. Peacock's flowing grasp of various styles never sounds forced or fake. Indeed, her invigorating twists on standard pop make this collection a delight. --Annie Zaleski

5 out of 5 stars Alice just keeps getting better!.......2007-05-21

Alice Peacock once again shines on this album! The songs, her voice, and the artful and engaging musicianship shine through. This compliments Alice's voice beautifully. Who I Am is one of those inspiring songs, I can listen to it when I'm having a bad day and am unsure of myself, it brings me to tears. This song is just beautiful! one of the most beautiful lyrics is "In the ways of life and art, I trust the wisdom of my heart"

Who I Am is classic Alice, with the seventies feel, but on a more updated level. The songs are like a snapshot in to Alice's life. If you are a fan, this album will inspire you! My favorite tracks are: Taught Me Well, If You Could Only Se Love, Time, Here I Go Again, Runaway Day, Different From the Rest, Who I Am and Anyone But Me. If you were a fan before this release, you'll be even more of one afterwards!

5 out of 5 stars Peacock Mania.......2007-03-10

Do you ever buy a CD and then find that you are unable to stop playing it? And it becomes kind of an addiction until you almost want to just keep playing it until you get a little sick of it so you can stop? This is one of those CD's. It's beautiful from start to finish. I appreciate the bare, stripped down quality to some of the more emotional songs because these days it just feels like no matter how beautiful an artist's voice is, it gets covered up with too much production.
This CD is quite different from her first one in a way that I found refreshing. It's a little more grown up. I found it remniscent of Joni Mitchell and even Vonda Shepherd (before Ally McBeal). Just straight ahead masterful song writing with a beautiful voice that pulls at you and brings you into her emotional space. So, I guess what I'm saying is...I like it.

4 out of 5 stars Sad Songs Say So Much.......2006-08-13

This is a very sad album. At least the first four songs are. I haven't been able to get past much more than that because they're so depressing. Alice takes both sides of having lost love or given it away. That's not to say it's a bad album, but right now in my life I can't take such sadness. It would put me over the edge and I'm nearly there as it is. This would make a great companion piece to Julian Lennon's "Photograph Smile". Both are exquisitely recorded and arranged and both have a fairly somber reflex. Alice has a great voice and is a strong writer. I can't imagine what inspired such sadness, though.

5 out of 5 stars rewarding!!!!.......2006-08-07

I really liked very much this album of Alice Peacock. This is the first time I buy an album of her. I think I'll be looking forward to buy more in the future. Her voice, lyrics and everything is great!

This is an outstanding album from Alice Peacock. She has put together a collection of songs that I think anybody can relate to at some time in their lives. This brings together a personal connection that does not happen with other artists. Keep up the good work Alice!!

4 out of 5 stars The Peacock Preens.......2007-07-22

This is a very solid 4 stars. The songs have very good lyrics. They are for the most part softer and slower, but with real feeling that keeps the attention, rather than getting tiresome. Alice is a good singer and her voice blends well with the restrained insturments. This album is definitely not overproduced. It is a dignified album with something to say. That said, the album kinds of runs out of gas toward the end and is maybe feels a bit too long because of it. Had the second half maintained the strength of the first half throughout, I might have given this 5 stars. Some notable tunes:

Alabama Boy - excellent thoughtful and moving tune about a boy who's a domestic violence survivor who did not succumb to his bad experiences

Leading with My Heart

Bliss

I'll Start With Me - critique of American consumerism

Parallel Life

Into the Light

5 out of 5 stars Alice Peacock.......2006-08-14

Whether this is her REAL name or not-you have to admit after listening to this CD that her music is ALL REAL!! Alice's strong yet lilting voice seems to surround you with a feeling of comfort and familiarity that you will not find with other performers. It's like having one of your buddies performing in your living room! She is an extraordinary talent, who manages to tell a story, somewhat the way Joni Mitchell did on her earlier albums. Alice shares bits and pieces of her life with you, and manages to do so with a soft, flowing, sweet voice that captures joy, reminisences, and heartache. This is a beautiful collection.

5 out of 5 stars 1000 STARS!!!.......2006-04-22

Someone please tell me why this woman has not won a Grammy? I had never heard of Alice Peacock when I saw this album at HVM. But that little voice in my head told me "Your going to love it." And sure enough this CD has not left my cd player in like two years. I love it, love it, love it!!!

Can't wait for the new release in June!

5 out of 5 stars Like a Sheryl Crow greatest hits.......2006-01-29

Had Sheryl been singing these songs, she would have had five hits off the cd. Just a totally satisfying listen. Try parallel lives-you'll try the rest.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Female Singer/Songwriter.......2005-09-20

I'll "cut to the chase" - this is now one of my favorite CD's, along with my old Jackson Browne, Dan Fogelberg, etc. It's that good (to take it's place among those artists)! There's not a bad cut on the CD. Both the lyrics and melodies are strong. Hopefully the CD that Alice is now working on in the studio will be as satisfying.

Alice Peacock's debut album, Real Day, is a wonderful set of country rockers, ballads, and honky-tonk workouts. Lyrically, Peacock delivers the goods on the usual subject matter--love, heartbreak, and personal triumph--but with a sincerity and originality that is rare and refreshing. The character of her voice entices you and makes you care about what she's saying. In the song "I'll Be the One," Peacock proclaims with quiet triumph that she's "not the one you're looking for" and that she'll "be the first to say good-bye," and yet the plaintiveness in her voice gives her away. Independence is righteous, but also lonely. In its more electric moments, full of organ washes, pedal steel, articulate guitar solos, and a punchy, melodic rhythm section, Real Day pulses with a slick, roots-rock sensibility reminiscent of the Jayhawks. When the album brings the mood inward with intimate tracks replete with cello, mandolin, and piano, you want to sit closer and really listen. This is a mature, personal effort by a young artist who has clearly seen much in her life, and yet one gets the feeling that the journey is only just beginning. --Michael Wells

Album Description

The songs on "Real Day" reflect how I see everyday life. The characters, are all parts of me -- kind of my weird take on the world and definitely a little bent but that's how I see things. The songs have many influences -- from rock to country -- inspired by artists ranging from Tom Petty to Rickie Lee Jones. People ask me who I compare myself to or what the album sounds like -- although I hate to limit my music, "Real Day" is pop with a lot of roots influences.

I listen to her music all the time.

5 out of 5 stars Peacock Sours!.......2001-11-29

Alice Peacock is awesome! We accidently stumbled on her while attending another concert in Chicago. Her voice is angelic and her songs go to the heart. The variety of music style is most enjoyable - ranging from strings to brass, pop to folk. She is amazing!

2 out of 5 stars She sounds like Jewel........2001-08-01

If this is to be considered "alternative country" music, i'll eat my ten gallon hat off of my ten inch belt buckle. Ok, so i only heard one song, but she sounds a lot more like psuedo-alty white female love song music than anything alternative, or country.
