When an artist comes back from the kind of trauma that dogged Scott Weiland following the release of Stone Temple Pilots' Tine Music ... Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop, said artist often comes back a changed person--and that's exactly what this surprising, fascinating solo bow shows Weiland to be. Middle finger pointedly directed at his past and eyes firmly affixed to his navel, Weiland slithers through the dauntingly dense disc with little of the simplicity implied in the title. Shaky and slurred, songs like "Where's the Man" and "Barbarella" conjure up some mighty frightening images without resorting to the brute force that was once Weiland's weapon of choice. Wrapped in grandiose post-glam, drag-heavy on strings, sequencers, and special effects, 12 Bar Blues is a daring leap, and it's clearly been done without a safety net. --David Sprague

NME
[12 Bar Blues is] schizoid but it makes sense. There's a unifying atmosphere of sadness, expressed with the scarred honesty of a man who's made it back from the edge. Although none of this will appeal to fans of the terminally one-dimensional Stone Temple Pilots [Scott Weiland's former band], Scott's not ready to be given up for dead just yet. And from the sound of it, he doesn't deserve to be.

5 out of 5 stars Scott Weiland 12 Bar Blues.......2006-03-09

An awesome cd, kinda weird, but fans of David Bowie will enjoy. Gotta give it a chance, it grows on you.

2 out of 5 stars Poor but different.......2005-09-24

Scott needs no introduction you know him from STP and VR...but this album isn't that hot, many haven't heard these song, and you know, maybe it's better this way, cause I haven't got much respect for these songs, cause they could've been better. I feel these songs are so quickly made, it's just messy. Scott is talented of course, and it's respectable he tries something different here, but you'd expect better from the frontman of STP! well, the influences are clear- David Bowie and The Beatles for the most part..but it's just that Scott doesn't enough of his own here, Barbarella is close to a great song (the frum beat however is so ridicilous it makes one laugh!) and it's indeed a great effort, Where's the Man is a pretty ordinary sad power ballad, but it works, definitely a notable song. The rest is pretty much trash..'The Date' has gotta be the most frustrating song ever! it's just so dull! but we gotta remember Scott was really wasted when he made the songs, so everything's pretty much heroin driven...

2 out of 5 stars Doesn't make the grade.......2005-08-15

I generally like everything Scott does and I really tried hard to like this record, but it just didn't inspire me very much. The Barbarella song was a bit of a high point, but overrall this record would be what resulted if a tornado went through a junkyard. Sure something great could come from the chaos, but after all the sound and the fury this alblum kind of falls flat

5 out of 5 stars overlooked.......2005-06-23

12 bar blues is not like anything you will ever hear from STP, or VR at all. Being Scott's solo album it is just like him, unusual and interesting. Most tracks are good, some just decent. But, it is worth a listen, especially if you're looking for something out of the norm. Track 4 "where's your man", is a beautiful, emotional song that is true to Scott's life in so many ways. It is one of my fav. songs of all time and in my opinion the best on the cd. Also good are: "Barberella"(though it has it's moments and I think is a bit too long, "About nothing" is very catchy,"Divider", and "cool kiss" is a neat song. The rest are decent but not quite as good as these. This album radiates the strangeness with an under lying beauty that is Scott Weiland.

4 out of 5 stars 12 Bar Blues is open.......2005-02-10

12 Bar Blues is miles away from Weiland previous work with STP this is a very eclectical, avant garde, Jazzy, electronic, and acustical work, all this.

With the help of a few friends such as singer/composer Sheryl Crow, Brad Mehldau (awesome jazz piano player) and even one Scott brother , Weiland build strange musical structures in some tracks of this album ("Barbarella" is the perfect example for this) , "Divided" is totally jazz because of the Mehldau contribution, "cool kiss" with electronic guitar samples proves that Scott is not afraid to experiment, he also includes guitar riffs by his own and xilophone or marimba played by himself, this is a great surprise to me , discover that weiland is more talented himself than i thougth not only as a vocalist and a composer but also as a musician, the atmosphere for 12 Bar Blues is eclectical in one word, maybe this will be the only odditie in Weiland s catalogue he is too bussy now with Velvet Revolver a project that still i cant assimilate at 100% and Scott seems to be more involved in this new GnR like concept more rock star than rock artist , theres a difference between this two concepts and Scott choosed the first one and forgott about the second that made of him a true musician.
Whatever

4 out of 5 stars surfer rock at its best with a little"fear" factor.......2006-05-14

As a little kid growing up amongst the 8tracks and .33s and .45s of my parents collection a couple of albums stuck out as far as lifelong memories go. One of those bands was the ventures. Instrumental music with a "voice" of only drums, guitars, bass, and moog: could never get tired of listening to TELSTAR! The other band that stuck in my memory bank was Frankie Stein and His Ghouls, whom i thought were the venture's alter ego only with halloween like screams, moans, and doors creaking! On halloween we would open the door, turn the lights off and have Frankie pouring out of the speakers! It sure beat putting in a cd with 100 sounds when you could have good instrumental music plus halloween sounds at the same time! But it doesnt have to be Halloween to enjoy this band, who, until now was very hard to find in cd form let alone on an album.....I gave this a four because i dont know what the quality of the cd is like yet, but i do know if u like instrumental rock or surfer rock you will not be disappointed with F.S. and H.GLs
