Afghan Whigs singer Greg Dulli has always had a soft spot for karaoke. Many of the highlights of his former band's live shows involved staggering covers of songs by unlikely sources like Curtis Mayfield and Stevie Wonder. With his latest outfit, Dulli finally gets to make the album that's been bursting through his skin. The material for She Loves You comes from sources as disparate as Björk ("Hyperballad") and John Coltrane ("A Love Supreme") but the singer treats them all with the same ravenous intensity, gasping through majestic versions of "Strange Fruit" and "Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair" with the unshakable intention to make each song his own. --Aidin Vaziri

5 out of 5 stars A Cover Album's Never Sounded So Good.......2005-12-30

The Afghan Whigs were a truly under-rated US alternative 90s rock act that hit their peak with 1965 and then slowly disintegrated. Having dabbled with projects such as the movie soundtrack to Beatles biopic Backbeat, head Whig Greg Dulli formed the Twilight Singers and released similarly stylish albums Twilight As Played By The Twilight Singers and Blackberry Belle. She Loves You differs from prior Dulli releases in the fact that it's an album filled with covers, although given Dulli's previous interests strangely does not contain the titular Beatles hit. Opting for obscure songs rather than guaranteed chart hits, Dulli and his Twilight collective work their way through Marvin Gaye's Please Stay (Once You Go Away), George Gershwin's Summertime, Mary J Blige's Real Love (which briefly includes a snatch of John Lennon's Real Love as a nice adjunct) and Martina Topley Bird's Too Tough To Die. More well known tunes include Billie Holliday's Strange Fruit (previously covered by Tori Amos, Diana Ross, Sting, Siouxsie & The Banshees and many others) and John Coltrane's A Love Supreme, but it's the cover of Bjork's Hyperballad that really shines. With his pal Mark Lanegan on board as co-vocalist, She Loves You becomes completely mesmerising after listeners indulge in a few repeat plays. Unlike many by-numbers covers albums, Dulli injects a fresh beauty to the eleven tunes gathered here. Originally showcased during extensive tours of the United States and Europe, The Twilight Singers have found there own niche within these songs to ensure they are far from fly-by-night knock ups. While it may not be new material from Dulli's astute mind, She Loves You remains another magnificent set from the Ohio native.

1 out of 5 stars Maybe I just don't get it........2005-07-17

Ok, the Greg Duli thing has gone on way to long. Is it me or does every song he writes/sings sound the same? He has not sung a decent song since his "Helen Highwater" days...and even then it was all cover songs. The songs in "She Loves You" remind me of a "Warhol" painting. It's basicly a product (like Cambell's Soup) that you seen over and over in print or illustrations, then he blasts music on top of a sub-par voice and calls it a masterpiece. I assume that's why he moved to Cali as they are so "culture starved" he can pass it off as art.

He talks of his pain and draws from his experiences of life. I can remember Duli running home crying because the braces on his teeth came loose while sled riding. I am sure soon we shall see a song called "Trauma in the snow on the river bank", read interviews in trade rags on how it "changed him so", and see pictures of him in the snow...with a smoke in hand of cours!

I understand that he has found a following of lost souls such as his, reaching for some truth to this life...all waiting for him to unvail some beautiful reasoning to "it all." Unfortunately, he's just a guy from Sharon Park in Hamilton, Ohio, singing for a buck and trying to make you believe he's something other than what he really is. Admittedly, this sometimes works, as it did for Charles Manson (not comparing the men, only their methods). But then again, what do I know...I only buy music.

4 out of 5 stars For Fans Only.......2005-04-25

Some people would argue with my title that this CD is only for Dulli fans. That's not to say that there aren't new ones waiting in the wings, but you're not going to force The Twilight Singers on your average Matchbox 20 fan. I find it's often not worth arguing about artists that take risks with such people, as the rawness created by singing outside of his range, as Dulli does sometimes, isn't something that Joe Average can handle. That doesn't make me better than Joe Average, just different.

There's an easy way to tell if a CD is good enough that has nothing to do with Amazon ratings or amateur reviews such as this one. As I write this, there are 61 used CDs for sale here, and the lowest one is going for NINE DOLLARS. That is amazing.

As for me, I'll just give you impressions on two songs. One morning I was almost late because I had to find this CD among my 2000+ CD collection to hear "Too Tough to Die" on the way to work. It's nice to hear the hook coming from the bass instead of the guitar. "Strange Fruit" gives me chills every time I hear it, but maybe because living in the South, the topic of lynching is a little too close to home. I think the arrangement is effective.

This isn't a CD you'll love at first listen, you have to give it a chance. Peace.

4 out of 5 stars Sonic flashbacks in the chill-out room.......2005-03-01

As recent covers albums go, this is a good one: it aces out Cat Power on concept and Tori Amos on sheer consistency. The concept this time out isn't sex but "real love," the kind of soulful, abiding love that not only goes into choosing our mates but also our favorite songs. And Greg Dulli's choices are as eclectic as they come. But bless his heart, Dulli is a rocker, one of the last authentic ones we've got. He digests Tricky trip-hop, cabaret-electronica, smoove R&B, even jazz, and delivers the pulsing heart of all his song choices as good old, electric-guitar-driven rock. But this ain't your daddy's guitar rock. This is sinuous, layered music, seen through a dub-gauze, darkly. Sometimes "She Loves You" seems to be emanating directly from someone's dreamlife, sonic flashbacks in the chill-out room. Mark Lanegan, author of last year's excellent "Bubblegum," pitches in as back-up vocalist on three tracks, but he's really just here out of comradeship; this is Dulli's show all the way. Daringly, Dulli uncovers the sadism always latent in Billie Holiday's masochism in a truly unsettling version of "Strange Fruit," and he finds a comfortable groove on Bjork's fear-of-commitment "Hyperballad." But the album's two showstoppers are the tense, surreal "Too Tough to Die" (not the Ramones song), and a very cool, slightly lounge-y arrangement of "Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair" which just keeps revving up for more, and which is almost as great as Bowie's similar heart-pounding treatment of "Wild is the Wind" (off "Station to Station"). She loves you? Yeah, yeah, yeah.

4 out of 5 stars Twisted mouths and dark hearts.......2005-01-26

Duhli is lacking the usual passion he brought to the Whigs and the first Twilight Singers recording.

*sigh*

If you cannot get the name correct then do not review the cd. Folks, for those who grew up in the cult of Dulli it is easy to tell that this cd is a natural progression the Afghan Whigs sound and past recordings. If you are expecting the glorious howl of Gentleman, the love burdened scream of Black Love or street corner bliss of 1965 you will get small sampling of each with a huge serving of dark and regretful love.

Yes,there are some covers that were unexpected but hey personal growth isn't so bad now is it kids? The cover of Hyperballed is a bit in left field but it's a great take on the Bjork title. Too Tough to Die is close to the Topley-Byrd original expect it's not as jungle/house like. Track 8 through 11 are by far my favorite section of the disk.

If you need a great Dulli fix then he's still your boy. If you stylishly need to be in the know then I hear that the Beta Band has a new cd coming out soon.

Buy this cd..or better yet buy the new vinyl pressing to be released this week. There's an extra track on it.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Barbara Cook is one of today's most accomplished song stylists, and if you don't believe us, just listen to this live album. It's a master class in the art of singing. It documents an evening at Carnegie Hall during which Cook proved that she can dissect and extract the substance out of the simplest of lyrics. One of the best surprises is "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" (from Company), which is taken at an amiable trot and allows the singer to display its humor. Cook is not a swinging singer and uptempo is not her pace; give her a ballad, though, and she'll wring the last drop of emotion out of it. Her version of "Losing My Mind" (here paired with "Not a Day Goes By") is simply astonishing. The singer also performs songs that Sondheim has said he wished he had written, an awful lot of them by Harold Arlen. No complaints here. Guest Malcolm Gets solos on a few songs and duets with Cook on others, including "Let's Face the Music and Dance." This is classic material done masterfully by a classic singer. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2004-02-20

Having read the other reviews there is little more for me to add. I have been a Barbara Cook fan for a longtime and for me, this is one of her best concerts ever. I do, however, prefer the DVD. As with some other reviewers, I do not want to hear Malcolm Gets (as much as I like him) when I want to listen to Barbara. Her flawless interpretation of music is a hard act to follow for any singer! I managed to see this concert 4 times over a year and a half. Each time I saw her the voice was stronger and more assured (I would not have thought that possible). I can't help but think we will have the pleasure of hearing Ms Cook for many years to come. For those people who enjoyed his CD I strongly recommend purchasing the DVD. Barabara's rendition of So Many People is breathtaking (literally, I don't think I breathed once during the entire song). If you ever have opportunity to see her live - go! She has an ability to make you feel as if every song she sings and every word she speaks is directed to you alone. She can take a large venue and make it feel as intimate as your own living room. Having had the pleasure of meeting her I can say she is as youthful and pleasurable in person as she is in her performance.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone Should Whistle.......2003-10-11

After being privileged to attend this concert, I had to own the CD. Once a lyric coloratura and the original Cunegonde in Bernstein's Candide, Ms. Cook has become (in her 70s) a true diva, blessed with a velvety, warm sound. Every note has meaning. Her high B-flat on "Ice Cream" is still the envy of any soprano today. Everyone should whistle after hearing the superb performances on this CD. Even better, though, is the experience of having been in the concert hall for the live performance. Brava, Ms. Cook!

5 out of 5 stars An amazing intro to the body of work of a true master.......2003-06-16

When I first bought tickets for the 'Mostly Sondheim' show on tour (in San Francisco) I figured it couldn't be too bad. Besides, I had only been exposed to a few of his songs (Anyone Can Whistle, Losing My Mind...) and had only seen "A Little Night Music". On the way out of the theater I immediately picked up this recording of the program. It is truly amazing. I immediately began listening to it and have barely put it down in the last few months. Furthermore, my Sondheim CD collection increased in size from an unflattering zero to five (and it's still growing)! This is an amazing introduction to the works of Stephen Sondheim, who is now my favorite modern musical composer). Buy this now if you don't already have it!

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful, moving concert.......2003-04-13

This is a wonderful CD set with a great selection of songs. I do want to express a slight reservation, however. Barbara Cook has been one of my favorite singers for a number of years and the way her voice defies time is extraordinary -- for her to be singing with such bright, beautiful tone in her mid-70s with no wobble or beat in the voice is an amazing achievment.

I do have to say that by 2001, when this concert was recorded, Cook seemed to have a lost a little bit of power and intensity in her singing. This is only natural for someone of her age. Her voice is still lovely, but you can sense her keeping it in reserve a bit. She's as expressive as ever, but compare the rendition of "I got lost in his arms" on this album to the one on her previous album recorded in 1999, "The Champion Season", and there's less urgency and vocal depth in her singing here. That said, the high B at the end of "Ice Cream" is sensational.

So, despite that caveat, this is, again, a wonderful album, a must for Cook fans, especially for the gorgeous renditions of songs I'd never thought I'd get to hear her perform: "Not a Day Goes By", "Happiness/Loving You", "San Francisco", etc. Buy it!

1 out of 5 stars ... and I love Barbara Cook.......2003-02-11

This recording is a disappointment for me. It is not her best work, and Malcolm Gets is uninspired. My biggest complaint however is the engineering of the recording. Throughout the speaking was to soft, the singing volumes uneven, and the applause deafening. I will be passing this CD on to friends, and will later donate it to my local library.

2 out of 5 stars The best? I think not........2004-01-11

This disc includes some songs that, while I like them, are not what people might consider the "best" of G&S. Of course, anything by G&S is good, it's still not the "best of the best."

There has got to be something that better represents the G&S canon.

1 out of 5 stars can't understand the words.......2004-01-08

Don't know about those other reviewers, but I just can't make out very much of the lyrics. Maybe those folk have better CD players or better hearing, but it's pretty much a blur to me. I strongly recommend "The Ultimate Gilbert and Sullivan" instead.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent performer.......2007-03-09

This plates are wonderful. I was charmed, and when I close my eyes now, I see scenes with American in Paris or Porgy and Bess but my favorite piece of music is Rhapsody in Blue. It's more than excellent is fantastic. Jack Gibbons perfectly feels the unique tone Gershwin's music, the mixture rythms of jazz with influences of impressionists and clear and beauty melodies.
      I'm fascinating.

      5 out of 5 stars A unique project.......2006-11-23

Gibbons' undertaking is unique: to reconstruct and then execute and record the note-for-note playing of Gershwin as documented on the composers' piano rolls, sound recordings and certain published arrangements. I agree with the reviewer who points out that the result is like a library and not a recital you sit back and listen to (or get up and dance to). In fact Gibbons does some editing of his "library" now and then, and clearly documents it in his liner notes: in some reconstructions he augments accompaniment effects and even the melodic line itself. I don't mind that at all, especially as Gibbons scrupulously accounts for such tampering in his liner notes; but it seems to me that it is in this area of "tampering" that Gibbons the artist is asserting himself...which of course undermines the "library", the "historical archive": you have to search and read a bit to find out when you're hearing only Gershwin and when you're hearing some added Gibbons. I don't mind; Gibbons is a remarkable artist in his own right, not merely an impeccable documentarian. For sheer generosity of production Gibbons' Gershwin must also be unique: 4 cd's, scholar-level liner notes (yes, you need a magnifying glass to read them), and rock-bottom bargain price.

5 out of 5 stars Gershwin historical, manic, perfect, archival.......2006-06-12

First: this is 4 high-end produced cd's (in low-end jewel cases) for the price of 2. The liner notes of all 4 cd's are condensed in a booklet of microscopic print, so you may need to spend the savings on a magnifying glass. MONEY WELL SPENT.
Second: Jack Gibbons plays (and has recorded) the Alkan op 39 etudes (he probably plays a lot more Alkan than that). For those of you not in the know, this is to say he has world-class chops, indeed history-class (Liszt, who never played his friend Alkan, at least in public). But it's also to say that Gibbons knows how to interpret and personalize fantastically difficult piano music. For me, his Alkan op 39 is personal and passionate and real (contrast the facile and over-pedalled Hamelin and the just-the-notes-ma'me Ringeissen). An appreciation of Gibbons' Alkan is important here because while his Alkan is uniquely personal (as such music must be, no matter how hard it is to play) his Gershwin is deliberately impersonal...which is to say: no pianist, no singer would want to reproduce what Gibbons has given us in these 4 cd's, and in fact few listeners will be able to listen for long to these 4 cd's without a respite, a break , some silence, some minimal styling from somebody (anybody) else...which brings me to
Third: This is an archive, not a recital. This is a library, not a program. There is no track-by-track contrast of moods here, no track-by-track concession to easy listening, varied delight, any more than a library shelf of novels is alphabetized by authors' last names as a concession to mood or fancy or taste of the searching patron. This is the documented Gershwin in his recording mode: manic, notey, clever, "on", and never, as generations of stylists found in him, ravishing, tender, longing, sweet, glad, hopeful...person-to-person, in a word. I can listen to these cd's about half an hour at a time, max. This is Gerwhsin, not Gibbons. And this is just one side of Gershwin. He died at 38, in the summer. Brain tumor. A lot of pain.
Finally, Jack Gibbons has given the world a uniquely valuable and easily available resource. Gibbons could now do us a service by playing us some Gershwin as he feels it, as it hits him and makes him sing (as Gershwin, our American Schubert, does to all of us, and as I think Alkan has done to Gibbons). I would love to see a Gershwin stylings by Gibbons now that Gibbons himself has made sure Gershwin in his authenticity is safe and sound.

      5 out of 5 stars Definative.......2005-07-23

Here's the whole Gershwin catalog at a great price... Five plus hours of bliss. Definately five stars!

Gibbons, according to a family friend and biographer Edward jablonski "recreates Gershwin's style." I'll never know. I can say this is a lively recording and has the perfect balance. It's neither stuffy and plodding or cute.

5 out of 5 stars Another fine addition to the series.......2001-02-13

After a bit of a slip with the second, this series was back on track with this third CD of songs cut from well-known musicals. As I mentioned in a previous review, just about any successful musical has had songs cut from it, not always because the song wasn't good, but because it no longer fit the show as updated, or a character or scene was cut (the booklet explains why each song was removed from its show). Once again, the songs are all good and the performances are wonderful. My favorites are "Mama's Talking Soft" (cut from Gypsy), "Big Fat Heart" (Seesaw), "Your Own College Band" (Where's Charley?), "When I Go Out Walkin' with my Baby" (Oklahoma!), and "Pick Up the Pieces" (also Seesaw). Bruce Kimmel was smart in using show singers instead of pop singers. I recommend the entire series. This CD features some fine songs that deserve renewed appreciation.

2 out of 5 stars "Authentic"? George Gershwin?.......2003-09-26

I was instantly dissapointed in the mechanical, yet inaccurate rhythms. His interpretation of piano roll performances is not accurate because the beat is not even. In his non-piano roll performances, there is still a lot of unevenness, and it is hard to hear the beat. In those wonderful Gershwin syncopations that trick you, he is tricked and doesn't maintain the proper rhythm. The "American in Paris" is perhaps the most interesting, and shows the most artistic playing, although it still lacks subtlety. I would have prefered to hear the actual piano rolls as mechanical as they are, or other old recordings, and have a better idea of what was really happening in the music.

      Customer Reviews:

      2 out of 5 stars A strange experience..........2003-11-03

They're both brilliant violinists but in very different genres, and Menuhin by his own admission never learned to improvise (unlike many of today's classical performers): he was trained in the post-Liszt, pre-jazz window when improvisation had died out in classical music and even cadenzas followed the score strictly (if Beethoven didn't write one, play Kreisler's). And it shows, rather painfully. He achieves a brilliant tone but that's about it: he plays these Broadway tunes completely "straight", and any student could do that equally well.

The CD is worthwhile for its curiosity value, but you'd get much better musical value buying Grappelli's jazz and Menuhin's classical recordings separately.

      5 out of 5 stars Menuhin&Grappelli.......2002-08-17

      5 out of 5 stars always a winning pair.......2001-01-29

You simply can't go wrong with a combination of two of the most talented violinists of our time. This cd is a wonderful showcase for them both and the choice of music is the greatest classics. It's a fun, winner of a cd.
