Editorial Reviews

Steve Graybow, Billboard, July 6, 2002
Swirling instrumental solos and dense harmonic flourishes … that reference ‘70s funk and contemporary hip-hop rhythms.

Product Description
With their new Velour Recordings release, Outta Here, Lettuce comes raw: no fluff, nothing smooth, just hard funk.  The record combines the grit of the Meters, the harmonic textures of Herbie Hancock, and the hyper-tempo funk of live James Brown.

Back in ‘92, the guys met at the Berklee summer program and were drawn together by their love of classic funk. Only 15 years old, they began taking over clubs and jam sessions in Boston, storming the stage whenever they could. Underage and with no gear, everywhere they went it was, "Let us borrow your drum kit" and simply "Let us play." And Lettuce (Let us) was born.  Since that summer, the guys have all had success -- Eric & Sam play with Soulive, Adam drums for AWB and the John Scofield Band, Erick produces for Sunshine Anderson, Ryan was a founding member of Rustic Overtones -- but they’ve all waited for this long-overdue reunion.

On the new record, Lettuce is joined by some of their heroes. Guitar great John Scofield rips on Flu the Coop and Back in Effect, to which Neal Evans of Soulive lends his B-3 chops. Trombone legend Fred Wesley lends some funk to the James Brown-inspired Superfred and the title track Outta Here.

Despite the record’s title, Lettuce is anything but outta here.  The band is focused on their upcoming tour of the U.S. and Japan.  It’s been ten years in the making, but Lettuce’s bid to re-land the funk mothership on planet Earth has begun.

This is what was supposed to happen to jazz funk. Following in the footsteps of those who werent afraid to step away from traditional jazz, Herbie Hancock, Reuben Wilson, etc.. - jazz, funk, hip-hop and soulful grooves. Just enough horns to sweeten it up. Get the "Lettuce - Live in Tokyo" release for the long ride home.

Big Grooves in the Big Apple. Great stuff. If you like to groove and love funk and modern instrumental hip hop this is for you.

I found Lettuce by following the "others bought this" trail from Poets of Rythym to soullive to lettuce. These guys are great and though I can agree many of their flourishes are predictable, what funk isn't? Thats like saying all Blues music is the same!

Buy this if you like funk, you won't be disappointed.

Good sound but without scofield and fred
i don t know how the tracks could turns ?
Still good modernjazz.

5 out of 5 stars Brings back memories........2007-04-10

When I was in High School, somebody made me a tape of this album, which I loved and which got eaten up by my tape player, and later my Mom discovered I had developed an obsession with Punk Rock music and said I shouldn't buy anymore. Now, all these years later, she has gotten into the Ramones and other punk herself! I bought her this CD for Mother's Day last year and downloaded it to my iPod. Boy, does it bring back memories! I am sorry that the Ramones were not together during the time that I knew their music, because I would have LOVED to have attended one of their concerts. Gabba Gabba Hey!

4 out of 5 stars great, minus a star for some minor, yet understandable gripes.......2007-01-23

first, the track list is definately amazing. johnny, joey, marky and cj all sound great, even though the speed takes some charm away from the rocket to russia tracks, i can live with it. lets see, this show definately made me feel for joey. on some songs, he seemingly gets lost and rather "blahs" out the lyrics or has to have cj back him, but joey was suffering a great deal at this point i believe. i cannot hear the crowd that well as a live show may be. who knows, the crowd may have been drowned out or something. nothing too big. anyways, buy this! it has excellent energy!

anyways, i dont think it was bad considering they had been touring since they started and joey was freakin dying! the ramones dont get enough slack for anything.

my only large gripe: why..oh why..did they make "any way you want it featuring eddie vedder" the last song of the show? why have eddie vedder sing the majority of their LAST song of their LAST show? they could have done something better to close their final show. i dont want to grow up would've been nicer as the last song.

    4 out of 5 stars Last Show...=We're Outta Here-video.......2003-03-04

Maybe you can tell by the song selection or the title, but this is the exact same cd you got in the "We're Outta Here" collection, just without the video. All the artwork is the same as well, so if you have "We're Outta Here", you really should save your money unless you really have to collect everything. If you don't have their last show on cd, this would have to be it, since "We're Outta Here" seems to be out of stock (at least as i'm writing this).
Not really being a fan of the later, faster live Ramones, I still gave it 4 stars cause the songs are great, & I like the cool guest stars.

...It's a long-shelved Link album from 1958(!) that was recently re-discovered, Cadence Records president Archie Bleyer had put out 'Rumble' ,but basically didn't like Link's music enough to release the whole album...and thought he was a bad influence on 'the kids'!
One of my fave 'musical moments in history' is when Link turns on the vibrato effect for the last verse of 'Rumble' as it fades out. With this record you get to hear the whole vibrato'd verse BEFORE it fades! Ahh, life's simple pleasures.... Much of the cd's material is not new,and they re-recorded almost identical takes shortly after, but there is enough unheard stuff to make it a worthwhile purchase. My fave are the 2 psychotic-guitared versions of 'Missing Link'!!! All hail the master....

4 out of 5 stars Ship Of Fools - 'Let's Get This Mother Outta Here' (Snapper).......2004-12-20

'Let's Get...' is basically nine tracks from the Yorkshire band's two lp's they released in the early '90's,'Close Your Eyes' and 'Out There Somewhere'.Ship Of Fools are best described as smoothly played progressive psych,or some may just tag them as trippy festival-like space rock.Tunes I liked best were "L=SD 2","First Light",the fourteen-minute atmospheric "From Time" and "Passage By Night".The line-up for this short-lived UK ensemble was:Les Smith-keyboards(now in Cradle Of Filth),Andy Banks-guitar,Sputnik-bass and Mick Reed-drums.Great to listen to late at night.Should appeal to most fans of earlier Pink Folyd,Ozric Tentacles and Porcupine Tree.

5 out of 5 stars SUPRISING - PROGRESSIVE ROCK FANS CHECK THIS OUT.......2003-07-11

I kinda specialize musical reviews of the obscure nature and with Let's Get This Mother Out of Here I think I've hit my zenith for obscurity but even as obscure as it obviously is, it's very good!

This 2002 release is basically a compilation of the now defunct neo-progressive rock/metal band Ship of Fools from their only two studio albums Close your Eyes, Forget the World and Out There Somewhere.

The band was apparently formed in 1992 by then Anathema keyboardist Les Smith, of which I have been unable to find out any information other than, he later joined Cradle of Filth. It seems an odd move because Ship of Fools or Anethma for that matter are worlds away from the extreme music of Cradle of Filth. Smith recruited guitarist Andy Banks. A bass player named Sputnik, another keyboardist, Damien Clark and drummer Mick Reed filled out the band's lineup.

Smith must have kept the rights for the music for it was he who brought the masters to Peacville records, who released Let's Get this Mother Out of Here in 2002.

Ship of Fools plays a smooth, atmospheric, spacey(literally), lush form of Psychedelic/progressive rock. It is strictly instrumental with some sound effects imitating space talk & chatter. I am really having a hard time drawing any parallels to any other bands. Others have mentioned Pink Floyd and Porcupine Tree but I don't see it. Porcupine Tree maybe slightly, but the mood and the sound effects are the only similarity to Pink Floyd. In fact, now that I think about it, I think New Age Rock would be a good term for this music.

At one time, founder Les Smith was playing in both Anathema and Ship of Fools, in fact Ship of Fools Occasionally opened for Anethema and Smith would go backstage after the first set and then return with Anathema. Smith was apparently the glue for the band because they broke up shortly after he left for Cradle of Filth.

It is a shame this band had to break up. There music was pleasant and inventive and if they were still together they would be household names within the progressive rock scene. Although this is not an essential album, it is different enough and good enough that you might want to give it some serious consideration.

    3 out of 5 stars Hallucinogenic Architectures.......2003-02-07

From Yorkshire, England, Ship Of Fools are My Dying Bride's lunatic neighbours by excellence. The band was created around '92 & has released two full-length albums via Dreamtime Records (a small sister label of Peaceville), now what we have here is a retrospective album combining the best moments of hallucinogenic trips newly remixed & digitally remastered.
For those of you not aware, Ship Of Fools was a mind-altering project counting with, among other mentally deranged members, Les Smith. Who later went on to join Cradle Of Filth, and is currently a part of Anathema's line-up.
The old days seemed rather joyful for the band playing every free party, festival & rave in the country. Constructing animated architectures on the audience, a slow dance of golden lights near to what Huxley would call the miracle of mescaline, the gazing twist in the universe of objective facts, the tearing of the abstract perception.
I'm sure this is a definite prescription from British psychiatric halls, a divine taste of what experimentalism is capable of inducing, and certainly very fascinating for those bored with the growing Metal scene. The images reproduced through the various audio ambiences is a rich melting pot of coloured landscapes and varied geometries. Most of the stuff is instrumental, with some minor samples here n' there to evoke a particular mood. Personally, I find Ship Of Fools very relaxing and good to listen while working or arranging a pile of papers hanging around my desk for weeks; they truly give a kick on you get high or trip somehow. Really, it's not annoying and gives a sense of acid inner-peace somehow running through your head and coming back to puzzle your thoughts & memories.
"Let's Get This Mother Outta Here" might be a wonderful discovery for the more spaced-out listeners, willing to transcend the limits of audio chemistry and even their own neurones, my suggestion is to give a it a try & discover for yourself what lies beyond such awkward mental conceptions.

    5 out of 5 stars Don't Say 'Roots Rock'.......1999-05-13

Hailing from the darkest back rooms and dirtiest saloons south of Eight-Mile Road in Detroit,The Gories single handedly capture the basest values of rock music. Predicted by Lester Bangs, The Gories existed for but a fleeting moment, yet left an indelible mark an all that followed. This CD, their final assult on the recording establishment, contains some of their greatest recorded moments. "He's Doin' It" is about Dan's freaky cat, who 'danced' to whatever was on the stereo. "Omologato" is Mick's paeon to his favorite type of car and his rendering ('rendering'-think of a glue factory) of "There But For The Grace Of God I Go" is the best version of a disco song never played on the radio. All in all, this album is a stomper from start to finish. And don't call them 'Roots Rock' (or 'Damaged Blues' for that matter) because they transend any pigeon-holes a labeling could ever try to stuff them in.

4 out of 5 stars A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19

This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

      4 out of 5 stars The 2263rd show.......2003-08-07

This is a CD and a video tape documenting the Ramones last concert. The CD presents the concert in it's entirety, while the video shows clips from the concert, but is really a documentary about the Ramones entire career. The Ramones already released several concert albums, so why release another one? Well, this is their last concert, so that gives it added significance. Plus, there are several guest performers at this concert, although the CD oddly doesn't say which guests are on which songs. It is a typical solid show from the group. As for the video, it does a good job of documenting the group's career, with plenty of interviews and performance clips. Ramones fans will enjoy this package.

5 out of 5 stars Hey [Girl} Lets Go !!.......2002-10-27

The video and cd are a must have for any Ramones fan. If your a fan of rock and roll this is a must have. I am a recent Ramones fan and these guys really know how to rock. Reminds me of being at school dance back a few years ago(30+years ago) loud fast and very raw. But that is what makes them more appealing!! They will live forever in their music. The video show you just how real they where not [faux] like many rock and roll stars are.

5 out of 5 stars The CD and Album are Outstanding through and through.......2001-08-05

The Ramones video: This is one of the most insightful rockumentaries ever (albiet the cinematography is weird) with great interviews with all the Ramones, plus other stars including Rob Zombie, Lemmy, Debbie Harry, Jello Biafra, and Jim Jarmusch among others. Also included is spectacular footage of the group live on many small Tv shows and even from they're last concert!

The CD: An hour long concert of the Ramones last concert in LA in 1996 with guest stars like Chris Cornell and Lars from Rancid. Plenty of great songs in the bunch, many of which are seen on the video.

      Total consensus: MUST OWN!!

5 out of 5 stars No true Ramones fan should be without this!.......2000-04-24

What a way to end a 20 years of work! The live recording and video is a must for any Ramones fan. The last concert is good with some great surprises, but I still think IT's Alive is the best Ramones live album! The video is worth the cost of the package! It's incredible! There are live shots of EARLY shows at CGBG's as well as tv shows. How about an early demo of "loudmouth!" It's in there! There are some many great spots in the video that I would love to tell you, but I would hate to ruin it for you. I love the Ramones and put off buying this, DON'T make the same mistake I did! Reach into your pocket splurge on this great set! Thanks

4 out of 5 stars The final gig by the world's best punk band.......1999-02-02

I love both the CD and the accompanying video. The video is two hours of interviews, home movies, concert footage from around the world and through the years as well as highlights from the last show in L.A. '96. For anyone who's ever loved this band, this box set is a reminder as to why The Ramones were one of the most exciting live acts of all time. Gabba Gabbba Hey!
