This collaboration between former Toad the Wet Sprocket front man Glen Phillips and Nickel Creek's Sean and Sara Watkins and Chris Thile was rehearsed and recorded in six days in 2000 and is the result of a true mutual admiration between the parties. Some of the eight originals bear a connection with Phillips's erstwhile band, especially a song like "Somewhere Out There" with its lilting rhythms and dreamily atmospheric chordal structure. What's most telling is the breadth that this new context allows him as a songwriter. The rootsy Americana, subtle voicings, and front-porch settings seem hundreds of miles from the more urban character of Toad. It's nice to see Nilsson's "Think About Your Troubles," one of a handful of covers, emerging as a contemporary standard in new acoustic circles (having also been released this year in a version by the Asylum Street Spankers). MAS's version of Jon Brion's "Trouble" shows the ease with which these players blend pop sensibilities with the resilience of tradition.

Why Don't I Like This More?.......2005-10-10
I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but 6 Days is not enough time to record an entire album, that's more than a track a day! Have you ever recorded music? Then you would know it takes days just to get one song sounding right. For all the love I have for Glen and Nickel Creek I was astonished that they put out an album like this, there's so much potential here, and you can feel it, but they just needed more time. If James Joyce could give 17 years of his life for "Finnegan's Wake," than I think these "mutual admirers" could've donated at least a week to an awesome idea like this, I hope they retry in the future and I'm sure the results will be just splendid, for now, stick to your Toad and Creek CDs and wait it out.
These other reviewers have gone mad.......2005-05-04
I have listened to this album several times on a portable discman with headphones, and also on my PC with it's cheap stock speakers, and neither time did I have any difficulty hearing the full range of sounds on each track. Since that appears to be the only complaint anyone else can muster, I can find no other faults. Glen sounds fabulous and the always stellar voices of Nickel Creek provide a perfect backdrop. I've had "Sake of the World" on loop for three days. It's light, smooth, a great listen when you need to relax.
A True Musical Pleasure.......2005-04-19
This is an album best listened to on a pair of good headphones. I could not truly begin to listen to it in the car. The music was there but not the real feel. Once I was able to sit down and enjoy it on the headphones it all came together. An absolutely beautiful collaboration of some truly great musicians. It is also one of those rare albums that only gets better each time I listen to it. If you are a fan of Glen Phillips work or Nickel Creeks it is a must for the collection.
amazing.......2005-03-26
I'm surprised by all these negative reviews. The album has so much quiet beauty. It gets better with every listen.
Can you hear me now?.......2005-02-24
Can you hear me now? Yes glen, we can hear you. I feel so bad saying this but this cd was mixed like crap. As I listened to the first track in my car I audibly said to myself, "what the crap is this?" Glen's voice was so loud and obnoxious. Not that his voice was obnoxious but the fact that I could hear nothing other than his voice. I listened to 3/4 of the song and could not take it anymore, so I skipped to the next song with the hope that the producer was going for a certain sound for that track, and that the rest would be fine. I was wrong. Virtually every song on this albums was mixed the same way. I was trying as hard as I could to listen to the music underneath but to no avail. I can tell that the music would be beautiful if it were audible. I love Nickel Creek. They are one of my favorite groups. I also love Toad, but for heavens sake, what is this? I am glad to see that I am not the only one that has noticed this.

Integrated Grooving.......2007-07-01
I am a great admirer of jazz vibe music and players like Milt Jackson, Mike Manieri, Bobby Hutcherson and especially Joe Locke. This time Locke's playing is lively and thoughtfully intertwined with that of his playing partners, pianist David Hazeltine, bassist Essiet Essiet, and drummer Billy Drummond. On other (also excellent) efforts, Locke has been rather more introspective and esoteric, but here his band mates "pull him out into the open". Their tight interplay pleases, while leaving enough "air" for deserved appreciation of each player. A great CD to be initiated to Joe Locke.
Mutual Admiration Society.......2002-11-04
This in one of the best jazz albums I have in my collection. I first heard cuts played on WBGO FM and purchased the album. I play it at home and in my car. It is by far the best jazz instrumental album I've heard in a long time. I am now a confirmed Joe Locke fan. I look for every album he's on. I recommend this album above any new jazz album on the market.
