This successor to the band's promising It Means Everything debut album finds Save Ferris in a similar bind to that encountered by their Orange County brethren in No Doubt. Specifically: how to follow up on the success of a ska-pop breakthrough when the style itself has faded commercially. Modified is a more uneven collection than its predecessor, even though Monique Powell (a less-mannered vocalist than Gwen Stefani) shines on the reggae-tinged title track and the band deserves credit for stretching out its musical vocabulary on the trip-hoppy "One More Try." But, like many major-label sophomore outings, the album as a whole feels underinspired and overhurried. --Bill Forman

5 out of 5 stars Wish I could give it more stars.......2004-10-06

Modified is one of my favorite cds of all time. I'm not even a big fan of the genre. Every song on the cd is incredible. A lot of times people buy a cd to get one good song, well every song on this cd could be that one song (except one more try being one minute long). This cd is fun, fast, and brilliant. Monique's voice is one of the best voices I've ever heard. The music on every track is awesome and very well produced. Every song is a stand-out track, but Let Me In is phenomenonal. IT IS ONE OF THE BEST SONGS, IF NOT THE BEST SONG, EVER WRITTEN, PERIOD. Let Me In is an epic ballad that sounds nothing like anything Save Ferris has done. If you can't feel the emotion coming from Monique's voice (Brian Mashburn, the guitarist, wrote the song) you my friend have no soul and are a horrible human being. That one song should be enough reason if you do not have this cd to get away from your computer, go to your local record store and buy the cd immediately. That song and this cd is that good. It just sucks that Save Ferris isn't making music no more.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect for the Heartbroken.......2004-08-27

Ever known a band for ages yet not gotten into them till one day something happens, you listen to a song and suddenly you're hooked? That's how I feel about Save Ferris. I have 2 main reasons for loving this band: 1) Monique Powell's amazing vocals and 2) I'm trying to forget someone who really let me down; the music lifts my spirits and the lyrics just echo my thoughts, or at least what I should be thinking.

Contrarily, the best song on this album for me is "Let Me In" (I say contrarily because it's not something the heartbroken should be listening to). If you need to move on, this is perfect for you.

5 out of 5 stars All-round Great.......2003-02-19

Although many compare this album to their debut (and ultimately find it disappointing), I think it has turned out to be an all-round better piece of work. Modified gives the listener a taste of different music, from Turn It Up's upbeat ska-pop to Let Me In's extremely touching style. All around, shows that the group can be versatile, and has the best of their songs.

5 out of 5 stars The best.......2003-02-01

This is the ultimate everything CD. You can work out to it, dance to it, realate to it, sing along,(I could go on forever). Modified is energy, power, fun, great vocals, and music packed in one and you don't often find CDs like this. It starts off with a bang: 'Turn it up' which is exactly what songs on this CD have become to me. The songs are just pure fun and you'll never find another CD like this. Monique Powell's voice is just awesome...no one else can sing like her. She's got a strong, happy, and undescibably good voice. The bonus track is wonderful too. Just wait a minute or so after the CD ends... you'll be so glad you did. Use your head and get this CD! You'll be mad at yourself that you didn't buy this sooner, so get shoppin'!

3 out of 5 stars Just Short of True Brilliance.........2002-11-12

I wasn't really sure what to expect from Save Ferris. It was a band I only began listening to a few months ago and only a few random things here and there- B-sides such as "Support Your Local Ska Band," their works with Reel Big Fish, and their biggest hit, the "Come On Eileen" cover- so I was very excited to try an album without knowing what to expect.

For what it's worth, the band has a very distinctive style- not a distinctive SOUND but a distinctive way of approaching a song- instead of the No Doubt cookie-cutter factory-sealed-and-pressed radio-friendly ska-pop, Save Ferris definitely do their own thing. They produce an album that covers very human and common things- deteriorating friendships, loss of love, recovery from life's dark periods- and they cover those things in a fresh and fun approach, usually upbeat and almost never too sad.

The problem is that they strive for their difference. It's not a natural sound, it's forced. They wanted to be the creative ska band, true to their ska roots on their follow up.

They fell a bit short. I haven't heard all of the first album, but there are few horns heard throughout the course of the tracks. Isn't a horn section a requirement of all proper ska bands? Did I miss something? I have to admit they make their point and they prove their creativity with tracks like "Your Friend" and "Modified," but they just don't have what it takes in other songs.

It's a good album if you want to try something uplifting and different from the bland over-stated alternative rock of today. If you're looking for something that's going to shake up your outlook on life, though, this really isn't that thought-provoking or insightful. I was disappointed.

General Midi is the master of fresh electronic cuts and smart atmospherics. This man's attention to detail with transitions and sound noids is phenomenal. This CD is a must for you anyone who likes Breakbeat/Techno/Industrial.
Track 4 which is Midi's Moonshot by Chris Carter will make your hairs stand up - buy this sucker!

I heard a part of it on the radio and got the CD after that. A very interesting, absolutely original music written and played by a guy who does not care about anything else except for music - I mean that he is not interested in peasing anyone.

Sometimes the music is just mesmerizing...

I bought this album on a buying spree of NTone albums after hearing Fink's Fresh Produce and Hexstatic's Rewind. I've always loved Ninja Tune's jazzy, mellodic breakbeats and, when opened up to the more electronic side of Matt Black and Jon Moore's label (NTone), I was happily surprised and intrigued. After purchasing a handful of other albums under the NTone label, including Neotropic, Animals on Wheels, and Journeyman, I have to say this album stands alone. It was clever, funny, and trippy as hell. If you like Si Begg as Cabbageboy, listen to him as Buckfunk 3000 and S.I. Futures as well.
