Product Description
The 1st Ska Supergroup!!: Justin Evil (Jeffries Fan Club, Longfellow) on the drums, Chris Evil (JFC, the Specials) on trombone, Derek Evil (JFC) bass, Jay Evil (The Scholars) on trumpet, Jonny Evil (Lone Raspberry) on the trombone and Aaron (Reel Big Fish) singing and playing guitar. The Forces of Evil were created to breathe new life into the Orange County ska scene. In January of 2001 when Jeffries Fan Club played their last show, many wondered what would happen to the Orange County ska scene. This is where Reel Big Fish vocalist Aaron Evil's plan came to fruition. "I like the old ska scene. I miss it and I want to bring it back," said Aaron. So armed with an idea, Aaron approached the Jeffries Fan Club drummer, bassist and trombone players at the show and asked if they wanted to play ska with him. The three said yes and the Forces of Evil were born. Once the Forces of Evil family was complete, they embarked on a mission to bring the same light, bouncy, horn-infused ska music that they had been playing for years to a new generation.

Before the release of a five-song EP in June of 2002, the band played numerous live shows and captivated audiences with songs like "Vague Love Song" and "My Life" as well as covers like Van Halen's "Dance the Night Away" and "Go to Hell" by Suburban Rhythm. These tasty gems are just a few of the offerings on their full-length release, Friend Or Foe.

With the full-length album, Friend Or Foe, due October 21, prepare for the Forces of Evil to invade a town near you.

5 out of 5 stars Great supergroup CD.......2007-03-20

This is one of the few "super group" ska bands out there, and it really behooves anyone out there who is a fan of ska to pick this disc up. It's one CD you can listen to straight through over and over again.
I have to say that, in general, this sounds like a "lost" Reel Big Fish album, i don't know if it's the production quality (which sounds a lot like a RBF album) or what. The other comparison that popped into my head was "Toasters meets RBF" (which doesn't really make sense since Toasters had nothing to do with this).

Sorry for the rambling review. This CD is excellent, ska fan or not, if you like well written songs that make you feel good even when things are against you, this is the CD to get.

5 out of 5 stars pick it up!.......2006-08-31

Wow! Awesome cd full of fun, catchy music that never slows down from start to finish. This is third-wave ska at its finest. If you are a ska fan, you probably already own this album. If not, get to a record store, or order this online. You won't regret it, I promise.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have Ska CD.......2005-06-25

This is THE must have ska cd. If you like ska, you must own this cd. Period. End of story. This cd is the best thing to happen to ska in a long while. Don't let it's lack of promotion fool you. It is very well done and worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars Frigin' awsome BiEtCh!!!.......2005-06-16

This is one of the best third-wave ska bands ever if you dont get this cd you will be a loser and no one will be your friend, seriously before I got this cd I was a loser and when I got this cd I was still a loser but hey maybe you wont be!

5 out of 5 stars Solid Ska Band.......2005-05-01

Spawned from Blitz, punk rock's better dressed off-shoot, Adam Ant was often accused of favoring style over substance by his harshest critics. Others credit him with putting some parody as well as some poof into what had become the lifeless punk scene. Either way, Friend or Foe, his first solo effort without the Ants did give him the biggest hit of his career, the giddy "Goody Two Shoes." With its not-so-coy "Don't drink/Don't smoke/What do you do?" chorus, the song galloped along thanks to a fine acoustic riff and a swinging bordello trumpet solo. The follow up single, "Desperate but Not Serious" was a bit more brooding, as brooding as Ant could get, but still managed to pack a punch. Along with Kings of the Wild Frontier and Prince Charming, this is Ant at his best. While Friend doesn't have the same tribal urgency that propelled the Ants along, it has a healthy dose of new wave know-how that only Adam himself could stand and deliver. --Steve Gdula

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An absolute classic.......2007-07-20

I'm so pleased (and surprised) to see the love for this album! So much of 80's pop is written off as cheesy, but with the tribal drums, incredible energy, excellent lyrics, and sheer creativity - Friend Or Foe is one of my favorite albums. It's the only Adam Ant album I really love start to finish, and it always puts a smile on my face. It doesn't feel nostalgic to listen to it, even though I'm a child of the 80's - it's just so unique. I always wonder how the heck this songwriting team came up with sound and even got an album like this made, but I'm so glad they did. I even like "Hello, I Love You" on this. I just think the album is perfect, and there's very few few records you can say that about.

5 out of 5 stars More Than Just a Great Glam Album.......2005-12-19

It's too easy now to dismiss Adam Ant as a fad, an 80s Glam act. But listen to this album and you will hear a pop sound more sophisticated than just about anything that was being produced at the time, with the possible exception of XTC.

Adam fashioned himself as sort of a white, British version of Prince - a sex-obsessed hedonist. The persona culminated in the album, "Strip", but "Friend or Foe" was his most satisfying effort. This album contains his uber-hits, "Goody Two Shoes" and "Desperate But Not Serious" as well as the radio-friendly but lesser played title track. However, it is the lesser known cuts such as "Place in the County", "Cajun Twisters" and "Try This On For Sighs" that make this album the masterpiece that it is. The trumpet-infused, pulsating beats on these tracks will make you reminisce for the 80s again.

The only misstep on this album is a cover of The Doors' "Hello, I Love You". I never liked the original version, and Adam's version does nothing for me. It was a bonus track anyway, and it certainly doesn't detract from the overall excellence of this must-have album.

3 out of 5 stars Its the drums.......2005-08-28

All the Adam Ant (or Adam and the Ants) albums that I have are all vinyl. I may be stupid but I feel that somehow at least I get the original intent of Adam Ant's music. I've read some mostly good and some bad about Ant music on this site. I didnt grow up listening to Adam (that I can recall).. my first was Prince Charming two years ago.. And I'll tell you from this listeners viewpoint, being a D'n'B fan, he has the best drums of all time.
When I went to Coachella in like 04 I saw the lead singer of Queens of the Stone Age in his side project (what I was told anyway) Desert Sessions, and they played a song with three drummers pounding out a tribal beat in one of their songs.
I just kept thinking about how the drums were used just like that, but twenty years before, by Adam.
In all of his albums the drums are a focal point that drive the song, more so than maybe they should be. But it works. The catchy horns and vocals are there too... they add so so much to every single song. This album, in my opinion is not as good as Prince Charming, but those drums...those drums, they're there and with every album I buy, newer or later, are present and beautiful.
When u listen you can hear the beats pounding and thats the signiture sound that should be associated with Adam, and/or the Ants, great sound. Its rough and good stuff.
If I had a kid who wanted to play drums I would make him listen to all Adam stuff and tell him to pound out the jam just like in the Adam and the Ants albums. Along with the tribal paint Adam really created a persona of his music and created a feeling that really wasn't and still cant be matched to this day. Buy this album and Prince Charming, you should be happy with your Antmusic collection at that point. Then keep searching for the relentless pounding tribal drums in all music and you'll see/hear it.

5 out of 5 stars He can never disappoint me!!!.......2005-07-28

It is my opinion that this is his best album. My favorite song of his has always been Desperate But Not Serious. Adam is the KING!!!! Do yourself a favor, BUY IT! Thank you Adam for being one of the greatest entertainers of all time. WE LOVE YOU!!!

5 out of 5 stars what a big bore you pop stars are!.......2005-03-13

What can I say. A classic! Adam, in my book, was and always will be to me, the quintessential entertainer. He came along and gave the music scene much needed style and flair. His musical style and witty lyrics from Dirk Wears White Socks on through Vive Le Rock, was, for me, inspirational and inspiring. I was 16 when Friend or Foe came out and it quite literally changed my life. It made me take a look at myself and gave me the attitude of "take it up or leave it". The standout tracks for me are: Friend or Foe, Something Girls, Place in the Country, Goody Two Shoes, Crackpot History..., Made of Money, Try this for sighs. Fresh music, clever lyrics. Adam was my generations Elvis. "People lie people hurt, like to read their Sunday dirt. So every Jeckyll needs a Hyde to blame the business on" Great line! Most of his albums have just recently been remastered. Dirk, kings and Prince Charming are available now and Friend or Foe, Strip and Vive Le Rock are being released April 4, 2005. I recommend getting these as there are loads of extras on them. "Antmusic for Sexpeople! Sexmusic for Antpeople! You might not like it now but you will" I could go on and on but i'll stop now. Enjoy!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The definitve issue of Adam's finest album..........2006-04-23

There are very few albums that I can hear over and over. This record is one of them. Adam got everything right on this one.
The songwriting and arrangements are perfect (and rocking, fun and lively). And they perfectly suit Adam's lyrics, hang-ups and swagger. He's the ultimate showman/bandleader on Friend Or Foe
which contains loads of perfectly arranged horns, BIG drums as per usual and great vocal arrangements to boot.
Friend Or Foe is his first album minus the Ants and the first where he receives credit for playing all the bass (something he did on the "Kings" and "Prince" LPs but credited them to Mooney and Tibbs, respectively). He's also is a pretty good rhythm guitarist and certainly knows how to use his voice (something never before fully displayed in the Ants).

The Songs? Ahh, the songs. Friend or Foe contains his best batch of consistantly enjoyable songs (cohesively sequenced as well).
The songs are alternately moody - the perfect "Desperate But Not Serious", "Here Come The Grump" - a song with an unwitting reference to AIDS (lines include "doctors say sex kills" and "come inside and die") and "Friend Or Foe" and UP.
The perfectly swinging songs "Goody Two Shoes", "Place In The Country" , "Try This For Sighs", "Something Girls" and "Made Of Money" all make for a perfect soundtrack to an old-school swinging dance party. Way before the mid 90's swing revival mind you. There's also it's share of interesting songs "Man Called Marco" (which sounds like a theme to a spooky horror film that never was), "Crackpot History And The Right To Lie" the fine album outtake "Coup D'Etat" and the weirdly sexy and danceable "Cajun Twisters".

The remastered cd has twelve(!) bonus tracks. Nine of which are rough home demos and are all in all pretty interesting. There's also the single version of "Goody Two Shoes" which is great and features Chris Hughes (aka Merrick) drumming and producing. There's also the excellent album outtake "Coup D'Etat" and "Good Sex Rumples The Clothing" which came out of the same sessions as "Juanito The Bandito" and "Why Do Girls Love Horses" and sounds it and has a great guitar part too.

Weird thing is is that many lyrics on the album deal with Adam's critics and they all responded with rave reviews for this record. Rightfully so as this is one of Adam's finest albums (if not his best).

The album also produced two American hits in "Goody Two Shoes" and "Desperate But Not Serious".

5 out of 5 stars I want those who get to know me to become admirers or my enemies........2006-02-03

By 1982 Adam Ant had ditched his band The Ants and gone solo. "Friend Or Foe" was his first solo album and probably his best. Following off the mega-success of his previous album "Prince Charming", he and Marco, the only band member he kept, came up with another brilliantly catchy and fun album. Again, in America, unfortunately only "Goody Two Shoes" hit the top 40. There are other greats here, and again, like "Prince Charming", not a wasted note. "Friend Or Foe", "Place In The Country", "Desperate But Not Serious", "Here Comes The Grump", a cover of The Doors' "Hello I Love You", "Crackpot History And The Right To Lie" are all great!

Besides the original 12 tracks you also get an overwhelming 12 bonus tracks, most of which are demo versions of album tracks and forgettable. There's not much difference between the Chris Hughes mix of "Goody Two Shoes" and the original. "Coup d'Etat" was only okay. "And So You Shall" as a demo is funny and shows promise. It's too bad it didn't make a final version. "Yellowbeard" is average fare, same with "I Know They Know" and "Gargoyles Are A Go". "Good Sex Rumples The Clothing" is actually amusing and catchy though it sounds like a blueprint for "Crackpot History And The Right To Lie".

Again, the lyrics come with the booklet and the graphic design and artwork ties in nicely with the other remasters in this series. All in all, another great album!

4 out of 5 stars "Nobody's Perfect, So Leave Me if You Object.".......2005-05-17

Following three albums and UK domination, Adam Ant disbanded his band the Ants and released 1982's "Friend or Foe," which he self-produced with former Ant Marco Pirroni. This is also the album that made Adam a star in America, where "Friend or Foe" hit gold and its single, "Goody Two Shoes," hit Number Twelve on the Billboard chart. The album stays true to the formula of other Ant albums: relentless tribal drumming, twangy guitars, catchy melodies, and playfully goofy lyrics. He seems a bit jaded by the downside of fame, taking jabs at rude journalists ("Desperate But Not Serious"), materialistic groupies ("Made of Money"), and nitpicky critics ("Friend or Foe"). There are no real duds on the album, although his cover of the Doors' "Hello, I Love You" remains questionable and doesn't quite hold up to the original. Digitally remastered, "Friend or Foe" sounds better than ever, and the packaging comes with lyrics and rare photos. Many of the bonus tracks, however, were negligible to this critic's ears, though "Coup D'Etat" and "Sex Rumples the Clothing" stood out. If you have the prior edition of "Friend or Foe" on CD, you can safely toss it out the window and make the upgrade by getting this disc.

3 out of 5 stars Friend or Foe? Because I have to know..........2006-03-19

I recommend this single if you're a hardcore t.A.T.u. fan, otherwise you may be disappointed. The two remixes are very hard-hitting and very good. The video's another great added bonus (although Yuliya's hair looks horrible so short)! Very strong single.

4 out of 5 stars Friend not Foe.......2006-03-12

This is an awesome single. Great remixes. But the label should release more b sides and stuff...

4 out of 5 stars Very Good for t.A.T.u fans.......2006-02-28

this cd is a very good item to pick up and I reccomend it to anyone who consider themselves tatu fans. However for the people who think they will pick it up because they heard a song of theirs on the radio I wouldn't bother. The cd only contains the original song and 2 remixes that are just ok. I would reccomend the All About Us single for newer fans but this is still a worthwhile product

3 out of 5 stars And another record label sabotages its artists..........2006-02-20

Both singles from t.a.T.u.'s new album are selling as promos all over ebay because those promotional singles have 13 mixes of each song on them. Guess what we get here? The original mix, an edit of an incredible 8 minute version, and one full length remix. Guess what all the fans are going to do? Either buy those astronomically priced singles off ebay--meaning, the record company nor the artist will get any money for it--or they will just download all the remixes they want on a file sharing program--again, no money for record label or artist.

Should you do either of those things? If you want the mind blowing full length LEX mix or the other slammin mixes from the promo...just weigh your options thanks to the record company....

5 out of 5 stars Friend or Foe?.. I'm Friend.......2005-12-31

t.A.T.u's second single is a potent pop/rock track. It involves short, but powerful words that explain the feelings toward somebody when they are there with you, and were they are not.
It includes Sting playing the bass and it was co-written by Dave Stewart.
The chorus is very catchy. It's a perfect second single, even though i think that the have better songs than this one, and it shows that t.A.T.u. are not just some "One Hit Wonders", if you like this single you don't know what you are missing in the CD, so check it out.
In addition to that, the remixes make the song a perfect dance/trance song. I'm Sure you won't be dissapointed.

4 out of 5 stars Russian Girls With A Scandinavian Sound.......2006-06-08

Julia Olegovna Volkova and Elena Sergeevna Katina, the two attractive lesbians from Russia known as T.A.T.U. have a distinctly Scandinavian techno-pop sound. Almost immediately the listener will be reminded of the two highly successful Swedish groups ABBA and Ace of Base. This dynamic duo is not as good as either of the previous mentioned groups, but they are quite enjoyable and upbeat.
