Heres an earnest debut of honest songs sung earnestly by a talented young singer in the Joan Osborne/ Michelle Branch vein. Foster came to attention in 2001 when she won the "Great American Song Contest" in the pop category, and was a finalist in the "John Lennon songwriting contest" for her song "She"--a pleasant, straightforward tune about falling in love with another woman. There are a few standout tracks, but overall the album fails for trying too hard. The production uses samples but sounds curiously dated, and the whole project sounds like it was pieced together by a confused committee who didnt know whether to go for the Dawsons Creek crowd or the Melissa Etheridge demographic, so they opted for a strange middle-ground between the two. Fosters singing, while a highlight throughout, is too overwrought too many times; she sounds like Alanis Morisettes mom on a bad day on the annoying anthem "Superwoman." Product Description
On her melodically rich and exuberantly rocking debut effort, "Everybody's Girl," the award-winning singer, songwriter and guitarist displays a spirit that's both timeless and up-to-date.
Tracks such as "Superwoman," "Water in Your Hands," "The One Who Got Away," the award winning track "She" and her first single "Used Black Cars" are more incisive examinations of relationships, while "Seize the Moment" champions the benefits of doing just what the title says. And who can't relate to the sentiment expressed in the title -- and the lyrics -- of "I Just Wanna Be Happy?" Then there's "In Between Poses," Foster's personal favorite on "Everybody's Girl" and an emotional lynch pin for the entire album.
Her frankness -- heartfelt and forthright, but never cloying -- are, in fact, the hallmark of Foster's songwriting. That philosophy is displayed throughout "Everybody's Girl," which takes events and lessons from Foster's own experience and transcribes them into universal sentiments.

Customer Reviews:
Kander and Ebbs' Score Stands Alone.......2007-01-21
First of all, top-rate performances abound here. Karen Ziemba makes every one of her songs sail into the stratosphere. She is a true wonder and deserved her Tony nomination against incredible competition (Bebe Neuwirth got it for the much more popular "Chicago", but Ziemba's her equal). Debra Monk once again makes her mark as a Broadway character actress, although her song "Everybody's Girl" is easily the worst song in the show and certainly beneath Kander and Ebbs' standard, but she wins you over with her energetic and well-placed rendition. Daniel MacDonald does a suberb job as the ill-fated hero, exposing innocence and wry commentary in his very presence, but he is equalled by Gregory Harrison's slimy and ultimately ferocious performance as Mick, the emcee.
The score evokes the time (the 1930s) without relying on pastiche to put it over. Of note, Ziemba's intro, "Willing to Ride", the ensemble "Everybody Dance" (which gives Harrison his chance to shine), "Two Little Words" (which provides the auspicious debut of a most impressive Kristen Chenowith and augers the great things yet to come for her), the touching "First you Dream" and, finally, the both ferocious and mournful reprises of the title song display a powerful and underrated score that deserves reevaluation.
If the book got it wrong, the composers and actors got it quite right the first time. This Original Cast Recording will always be proof positive of that undeniable fact. Always "dream".
Great Score, lousy show........2006-07-22
Kander and Ebb in a Major Key.......2006-02-09
First, the performances of the leads are excellent. Karen Ziemba is superb. Daniel McDonald has a wonderful light baritone, and who knew Gregory Harrison (Trapper John, M.D.) could sing, let alone sing well. Debra Monk performs an excellent comic turn. Kristen Chenoweth's Broadway debut number was corny as can be, but did show off her talent and range well.
The music is just wonderful. Willing to Ride is a spirited waltz. Everybody Dance is a near-perfect Charleston opener top the dance marathon that forms the backbone of the plot. Power is a Powerful Thing may be a little weak in the lyrics, but its set to a spirited and charming ragtime melody. Dance with Me and The Last Girl are sung in a medley format. This is almost a shame because both numbers are excellent in their own right. In fact, The Last Girl is as gorgeous a ballad as you can find anywhere.
Wet is a tinkling, sparkling number in which Ms. Ziemba charms, and Mr. McDonald has a teriffic counterpoint melody. Ms. Monk has a showstopper in Everybody's Girl and a torchy number with Somebody Older. The Shag is a dance piece that may be the best number of all. It seems to alternate between twenties hot jazz and the swing that was just starting to be heard around then. There's also a great bluesy harmonica specialty number, whose only flaw is that it's too short. All in all, the score is a gem, especially compared to most of what we've heard in the last twenty years or so.
This is one of those recordings that makes you wonder why the show was a flop. I went back and read the reviews. Basically they didn't like the plot and felt the production strained too hard to be likeable, but lacked energy at the same time. The show also suffered from comparison to the stunning revival of Chicago that opened in the same season. The critics even managed to be lukewarm on the score. The show closed shortly after being nominated for eleven Tony's and winning none - that was the year Titanic swept the boards. With all that, I'd still say the score is marvelous when heard on its own merits. And I'd go to see a revival if someone would do it. Buy it. I recommend it without reservation.
Weak Plot ... Nice Score.......2005-08-06
Best tracks:
Willing To Ride
Second Chance
Running In Place
First You Dream
Unfortunately, "Steel Pier" was overshadowed by that season's remarkable revival of "Chicago" and dreadful "Titanic". A fine addition, however, to a theatre-lover's collection!

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Barbara Cook is one of today's most accomplished song stylists, and if you don't believe us, just listen to this live album. It's a master class in the art of singing. It documents an evening at Carnegie Hall during which Cook proved that she can dissect and extract the substance out of the simplest of lyrics. One of the best surprises is "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" (from Company), which is taken at an amiable trot and allows the singer to display its humor. Cook is not a swinging singer and uptempo is not her pace; give her a ballad, though, and she'll wring the last drop of emotion out of it. Her version of "Losing My Mind" (here paired with "Not a Day Goes By") is simply astonishing. The singer also performs songs that Sondheim has said he wished he had written, an awful lot of them by Harold Arlen. No complaints here. Guest Malcolm Gets solos on a few songs and duets with Cook on others, including "Let's Face the Music and Dance." This is classic material done masterfully by a classic singer. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

Everyone Should Whistle.......2003-10-11
An amazing intro to the body of work of a true master.......2003-06-16
Beautiful, moving concert.......2003-04-13
I do have to say that by 2001, when this concert was recorded, Cook seemed to have a lost a little bit of power and intensity in her singing. This is only natural for someone of her age. Her voice is still lovely, but you can sense her keeping it in reserve a bit. She's as expressive as ever, but compare the rendition of "I got lost in his arms" on this album to the one on her previous album recorded in 1999, "The Champion Season", and there's less urgency and vocal depth in her singing here. That said, the high B at the end of "Ice Cream" is sensational.
So, despite that caveat, this is, again, a wonderful album, a must for Cook fans, especially for the gorgeous renditions of songs I'd never thought I'd get to hear her perform: "Not a Day Goes By", "Happiness/Loving You", "San Francisco", etc. Buy it!
... and I love Barbara Cook.......2003-02-11

Here's an earnest debut of honest songs sung earnestly by a talented young singer in the Joan Osborne/ Michelle Branch vein. The production uses samples but sounds curiously dated, and the whole project sounds like it was pieced together by a confused committee who didn't know whether to go for the Dawson's Creek crowd or the Melissa Etheridge demographic, so they opted for a strange middle-ground between the two. Foster's singing, while a highlight throughout, is too overwrought too many times; she sounds like Alanis Morisette's mom on a bad day on the annoying anthem "Superwoman." Here's to hoping that she records her next album with just an acoustic guitar and a microphone. A big admirer of U2, Foster wrote "She" immediately after she went to one of their concerts in Buffalo, N.Y. That song later won "best song" at the John Lennon Songwriting Awards Contest.
Interestingly enough her new CD "Everybodys Girl" was produced by Glenn Rosenstein (Ziggy Marley, U2 (New Years Day) Talking Heads, Madonna).
My favorite song is "Used Black Cars". You can hear parts of it on her website (which includes tour dates). Go to JenFoster.com!

Add to all this two classical scenes with Coward and co-star Gertrude Lawrence from his "Private Lives," incredibly valuable for those local drama groups who butcher this work in that this CD can teach them the tone and rhythms that are essential in making this classic succeed.
The subtitle of this set is "The Complete Recordings, Volume 1: 1928-1932." So we can look forward to future offerings featuring this fascinating composer-lyricist-performer. Thank you, Naxos, yet again.

Album Description
The Daisy/Tiger Records story features every single track released by Daisy and Tiger, all from the original master tapes, plus for the first time ever, three previously unissued alternate versions. From Dee Dee Warwick and Bessie Banks to Alvin Robinson and Roy Buchanan, everything on the label as dripping with the magic Leiber & Stoller had woven so well with previous chart-topping acts like the Coasters, the Drifters and the Clovers. Sundazed. 2003.Customer Reviews:
Packed with "should've been" hits of Leiber & Stoller.......2003-05-23
The duo's subsequent writing and production success at Atlantic throughout the late '50s and early '60s is impressive enough, but when one considers the sides they wrote and produced on Capitol, RCA (including hit singles for Elvis Presley), Scepter, Wand and numerous other labels, their output is truly staggering. It should be no surprise then that their second foray into label ownership, Tiger Records (and subsequently its sister label, Daisy), yielded a superb collection of singles and B-sides. What's truly astounding is that the labels' combined output, collected here in its entirety, had virtually no success on the charts.
Starting with Tippie and the Clovers (comprised of Roosevelt "Tippie" Hubbard and three members of the original Clovers), Tiger and Daisy turned out a tremendous string of soul, pop, and R&B singles from the pens of Leiber & Stoller, Barry & Greenwich, Van McCoy and others. The debut single, "Bossa Nova, Baby," would become a hit for Elvis Presley the following year, but the original version, with a superb bass and drums bottom, jazzy vocal arrangement, and swinging sax solo failed to even touch the charts. The flip, "The Bossa Nova (My Heart Said)," features a similar arrangement, but with more of a Drifters' feel. The label had similar bad luck with Bessie Banks' original recording of "Go Now." Though this superbly soulful original has become better known via retrospective anthologies, it was eclipsed on the charts by the Moody Blues remake.
Beyond these two track Daisy and Tiger's compositions were relegated to nearly complete obscurity. Cathy Saint's "Big Bad World" had all the elements of a Brill Building success -- strong lead vocal, swinging drums, horn chart, and girlgroup harmonies -- but failed in the aftermath of JFK's assassination. The B-side, "Mr. Heartbreak," is a lovely ballad in the Dusty Springfield vein. Alvin Robinson's superb New Orleans influenced "Something You Got" (Tiger's only chart entry at #54) combines vocal elements of Otis Redding and Ray Charles, with a sublimely restrained horn chart. The flip, a remake of The Coasters "Searchin'," adds a wonderful bit of Memphis soul.
The labels also produced a pair of fine rock 'n' roll instrumentals from Bob Moore and the Temps. Their "Trophy Run" combines the guitar swagger (courtesy of none other than Roy Buchanan) and romping rhythms of Lonnie Mack, Duane Eddy and Link Wray, and "Braggin'" adds a bit Sunset Strip styled harmonica and organ. Vic Donna's sides are straight boy pop, with a vocal that sounds quite a bit like then session vocalist Tony Orlando.
Leola & The Lovejoys hold the distinction of being the only artists to release two singles on the Tiger label, and all four of their sides are fine slices of soul. The gospel-tinged "It's Mighty Nice" and "Wait 'Round the Corner" show off their strong vocals, and Barry & Greenwich's "He Ain't No Angel" is a girlgroup dance tune that foreshadows the songwriters' work at Red Bird. Dionne Warwick's younger sister, Dee Dee, though primarily employed as a backing singer, also had her first release on Tiger, featuring a pair of tunes written by Van McCoy.
The song that truly set the table for the Leiber & Stoller's subsequent success at Red Bird is Moody and the Delta's "Everybody Come Clap Your Hands." Written by Barry & Greenwich and produced by Joe Jones in 1964, this upbeat tune shakes off the R&B and doo-wop intonations of the '50s and stakes out a freer '60s soul sound. The dance beat brings to mind Wilson Pickett's and Bobby Freeman's soul songs from the mid-60s. The flip, "Monkey Climb," is indicative of the groups New Orleans roots - roots that would pay off handsomely with The Dixie Cups.
In addition to twenty-two sides that should have been contenders for the tops of the charts, Sundazed has generously added three previously unreleased alternate takes, detailed liner notes and period photos. If not for the quirks of record promotion, this would be a collection of chart-toppers, rather than unknown gems. Nearly everything here is as good as anything Leiber & Stoller actually got onto the charts, and after only a few spins you'll forget that you didn't actually hear these back in 1963 (or repeated ad nauseam by modern Oldies radio).
