The second installment of Will Oldham songs recorded under his nom de plume of Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Ease Down the Road finds Oldham playing his quintessential role as the crack-voiced acoustic troubadour. He is backed by a drunken choir and a rickety orchestra featuring, among others, brother Ned Oldham, avant-garde director Harmony Korine, Papa M's David Pajo, and a gaggle of longtime musical comrades from Oldham's first group, Palace. In comparison to the first Bonnie "Prince" album--the spectral I See a Darkness--the mood is warm, playful, and concerned mainly with love, infidelity, and the joys of the flesh; "She's a fine looking lady, and she likes to go down on me," croaks Oldham on "A King at Night," "And I like to go down on her too..." Lewdness aside, though, there's much to recommend Oldham's latest incarnation as a serious artist, rather than some lo-fi freak, suitable only for a niche audience; the lazy, sleep-encrusted love balladry of "Break of Day" drags on the castoffs of a raggedly clothed Bob Dylan, while "After I Made Love to You" gently embraces the gospel tradition, albeit a gospel to the joys of infidelity, with Oldham whispering of "doing something filthy / in a rented room tonight". He's made better albums, but Ease Down the Road finds this lo-fi Lothario reclining into a comfortably gritty middle age. --Louis Pattison

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

3 out of 5 stars The easiest one...?.......2005-12-23

Since Will Oldham took on the name Bonnie Prince Billy and started recording in a studio the songs took different forms too. Now there's a little more room for a little more different sounds and gentler instrumentation.

This CD doesn't have any songs that I would put in my all-time Will Oldham top 10. But then, the guy has written so many good ones in the last 15 years.

It's a very laidback album, the lyrics are a little more upbeat than in his Palace days. He definitely shows that a good song is sometimes more important then a slick performance. But, like Oldham, Dylan and Neil Young have already showed that.

There are no bad songs, no top songs but just a pleasant 45 minutes of craftmanship.

The reason I have given this album only 3 stars is to compare it with his other albums, so of which are better and some clearly better.

5 out of 5 stars surrious........2005-02-24

this album rocks. maybe not in the traditional sense but in a kind of la la la way. rully good.

5 out of 5 stars The King at Night.......2004-12-13

Worth getting if only for the two songs,"The King at Night" and "At the Break of Day". Of course, all the other songs are better than anything else out there, but these two flat blow me away. There is not a more gifted songwriter on the planet these days. Bob Dylan used to be. Will Oldham (Bonny Billy) is our new heir.

5 out of 5 stars Plantive, Melancholy, Brooding & Fantastically Brilliant...........2004-01-20

William Oldham (bonnie `Prince' Billy), finds himself alone in seemingly single-handedly broadening the possibilities of contemporary folk & Country music, thereby exploring downtempo emotional acoustic music to it very limits. It's an album of intimate melancholy, beautifully gloomy & deceptively complex. His songwriting continues to expand & grow in composition, and William knows how to pull magnificent performances from just the most minimal of melodies...."May It Always Be" & ""After I Made Love to You", are quietly understated tracks, yet contain a full body of emotions in a wonderfully plaintive way. William has this magnificent ability of being seemingly troubled & disparate, yet immediately charismatic, in a way few artists are able to convey. As with virtually all of William solos albums, there are too few tracks on his albums (in this case 12 tracks), and the combined running time is barely over half an hour, but William hands in such a splendidly balanced & delightful album, that such trivial quibbles are redundant.

5 out of 5 stars Windswept polly pocketed love.......2003-12-23

This is fresh, cool as an early autumn breeze, bringing to mind old folk recordings, but also Seals and Crofts and The Hollies, in the gracious use of timeless chees-ish synths, and a lyrical excellence unmatched. Just what you need.

This is so horrible that it's laughable.

The pressure to change style in 70's and become the new Buddy Rich to target the new generation comes across as a make it up as we go along Jazzrock Funky Blues sound which makes a jazz fan want to puke.

      5 out of 5 stars Become a drumaholic........2002-03-07

This was the first Buddy Rich album I ever bought, in fact it was one of the first albums I ever bought, period. As a young percussionist (not drummer) I was searching for some purpose for the music I was playing. Some definition of what it was to be a musician from a percussion standpoint. That definition was certainly not going to be found in mainstream music or even in classical music.

My search lead me to Buddy Rich and, by complete luck, I stumbled onto this album. It was exactly what I needed, what I wanted, what I was searching for. It showcased Buddy's enormous talent without leaving the rest of the band, and music, far behind. Too often is the case that so much emphasis is placed on Buddy that it is hard for a young percussionist to relate to Buddy and his place in the scope of the band and music. This album is very balanced, yet allows the listener to easily hear the talent of the world's greatest percussionist.

5 out of 5 stars Rich at his finest.......2001-03-12

This cd is great! Playhouse is the coolest song on the cd. If your a young drummer like me, buy this cd, it will inspire you to do anything on the drums.

      5 out of 5 stars Hot.......1999-06-17

This album is fast paced and really sends ya!!! It's amazing Buddy could still play the way he did at that age.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great CD! I love it!.......1999-01-15

This CD is so cool! It has the best songs. I've listened to it for hours, and I'm still not bored. My favorites are Backwoods Sideman, and being a jazzz trombonist, Tommy Medley. Try it out!
