The second installment of Will Oldham songs recorded under his nom de plume of Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Ease Down the Road finds Oldham playing his quintessential role as the crack-voiced acoustic troubadour. He is backed by a drunken choir and a rickety orchestra featuring, among others, brother Ned Oldham, avant-garde director Harmony Korine, Papa M's David Pajo, and a gaggle of longtime musical comrades from Oldham's first group, Palace. In comparison to the first Bonnie "Prince" album--the spectral I See a Darkness--the mood is warm, playful, and concerned mainly with love, infidelity, and the joys of the flesh; "She's a fine looking lady, and she likes to go down on me," croaks Oldham on "A King at Night," "And I like to go down on her too..." Lewdness aside, though, there's much to recommend Oldham's latest incarnation as a serious artist, rather than some lo-fi freak, suitable only for a niche audience; the lazy, sleep-encrusted love balladry of "Break of Day" drags on the castoffs of a raggedly clothed Bob Dylan, while "After I Made Love to You" gently embraces the gospel tradition, albeit a gospel to the joys of infidelity, with Oldham whispering of "doing something filthy / in a rented room tonight". He's made better albums, but Ease Down the Road finds this lo-fi Lothario reclining into a comfortably gritty middle age. --Louis Pattison

The easiest one...?.......2005-12-23
This CD doesn't have any songs that I would put in my all-time Will Oldham top 10. But then, the guy has written so many good ones in the last 15 years.
It's a very laidback album, the lyrics are a little more upbeat than in his Palace days. He definitely shows that a good song is sometimes more important then a slick performance. But, like Oldham, Dylan and Neil Young have already showed that.
There are no bad songs, no top songs but just a pleasant 45 minutes of craftmanship.
The reason I have given this album only 3 stars is to compare it with his other albums, so of which are better and some clearly better.

Don't get this !.......2005-01-08
The pressure to change style in 70's and become the new Buddy Rich to target the new generation comes across as a make it up as we go along Jazzrock Funky Blues sound which makes a jazz fan want to puke.
Become a drumaholic........2002-03-07
My search lead me to Buddy Rich and, by complete luck, I stumbled onto this album. It was exactly what I needed, what I wanted, what I was searching for. It showcased Buddy's enormous talent without leaving the rest of the band, and music, far behind. Too often is the case that so much emphasis is placed on Buddy that it is hard for a young percussionist to relate to Buddy and his place in the scope of the band and music. This album is very balanced, yet allows the listener to easily hear the talent of the world's greatest percussionist.
