Album Description

Featuring a futuristic cover predating David Bowie's science fiction funk, Betty Davis crafted an inspired second album, leading with "Shoo-B Doop and Cop Him" (later sampled by Ice Cube) and made up of classic cuts like "Don't Call Her No Tramp" and the mesmerizing punk soul of "He Was A Big Freak." This was the first album Betty produced entirely by herself and she really sharpened up her songs and performances for it.

This 1974 masterpiece will finally receive a long-overdue proper reissue with Part Two of Oliver Wang's liner notes and an endless array of photos and archival material, plus a number of previously unreleased bonus tracks.

Album Description

For the first time, Betty's critically adored first two albums are being lovingly re-mastered from the original master tapes by Light In The Attic Records to sound as ferocious and revolutionary as they did when they first sprung on an unsuspecting world in the early `70s. In recent years, rappers from Ice Cube to Talib Kweli to Ludacris have rhymed over the intensely strong but sensual funk of Betty Davis. One can hardly imagine the genre-busting, culture-crossing musical magic of Outkast, Prince, Erykah Badu, Rick James, The Roots, or even the early Red Hot Chili Peppers without the influence of this R&B pioneer. Ms. Davis's unique story is unlike any other in popular music. Betty wrote the song 'Uptown' for the Chambers Brothers before marrying Miles Davis in the late `60s, influencing him with psychedelic rock, and introducing him to Jimi Hendrix -- personally inspiring the classic jazz-rock fusion album Bitches Brew. Betty not only wrote every song she ever recorded and produced every album after her first, but the young woman penned the tunes that got The Commodores signed to Motown. The Detroit label soon came calling, pitching a Motown songwriting deal, which Betty turned down. Motown wanted to own everything. In 1973, Davis would finally kick off her cosmic career with an amazingly progressive hard funk and sweet soul self-titled debut. Her 1974 sophomore album They Say I'm Different features a worthy-of-framing futuristic cover challenging David Bowie's science fiction funk with real rocking soul-fire, kicked off with the savagely sexual 'Shoo-B-Doop and Cop Him' (later sampled by Ice Cube). In addition to the restoration of the incredible original cover art, the albums feature compelling and heartbreaking liner notes written by author and respected soul music scholar Oliver Wang (O-Dub/Soul Sides) and include her second interview in decades, making these essential reissues for any soul or funk-rock collection.

5 out of 5 stars Betty Davis?WHOA!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-07-03

Betty Davis is an artist I've been hearing a lot of hype about for years.'They Say I'm Different' is an album I've been hearing about forever as well.I was almost entirely certain there was no way that this album could possibly live up to the hype.Well when Light In The Attic records decided to put this out on CD,.....well to put it mildly this MORE then lived up to it's longheld mystique and hype. The best way to describe this music is unhinged and unpolished funk.EVERY song on it fits that description. As for Betty Davis's singing,it lays somewhere between the the styles of Tina Turner,Sly Stone and Janis Joplin. All of the songs celebrate her liberated spirit but there's one that just blows you away in less then a second."He Was A Big Freak".......I don't know WHAT MAN she was referring to but she really paints herself as a wild, wild funky diva BIG TIME here;she wails out about her "man" who enjoys being tied up.The Ohio Players did a lot of S&M based album art at the this time but TALKING OPENLY ABOUT IT,A FEMALE FUNK SINGER?And it never seems like a gimmick either because you actually believe she lived a lot of the "wild style" she speaks about. And the grooves on that and every other song here are as raw a funk as you're probably ever going to hear.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Album, nice lyrics.......2007-07-15

A good album that I enjoyed, with great lyrics. The most memorable song on the album being "song in my head" Comparable to Relient K, but less variety. However, Sherwood has figured out their style, and they are good at it, which tends to make up for the repitition of sound in most of the tracks. Can drag in the middle a bit, but all in all a great album. If you have an appreciation for the thoughtful lyrics and well constructed musical style of Relient K and others, you will probably enjoy Sherwood.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! .......2007-06-24

This album is awesome! I've listened to it over and over again and it keeps getting better with each listen. I am very impressed with this band and this album.

5 out of 5 stars I haven't been this addicted since I started crack........2007-05-01

Okay, so I've never tried crack, but I hear it's pretty addictive. As is this suberb CD by Sherwood. To anyone who has never heard them, take Relient K and Mae, mash them together, and you have Sherwoord. Of course, you could throw in some Hellogoodbye and Daphne Loves Derby for good measure, and that's good eatin'!
Alright, I guess it needs to be a bit less vague than that. You've got four guys playing guitar, bass, drums, and keyboard. It's a set up we've seen before, but few pull it off as well as this band. The synth reminds me of a less mentally unsable Motion City Soundtrack. The lyrical content is your typical "Boy loves girl, girl does not recipricate." The amazing thing is that while they write lyrics that sound like an old Dashboard Confessional album, the delivery ends up being very much on the hopeful side.
For those who didn't download their Summer Ep for free back in June or May of last year, the only song that was not added to this album was "This Airplane is a Ribbon." That made me a bit sad because that is by far my favorite Sherwood song. "The Only Song" sounds the same to me. "Middle of the Night," "The Simple Life," and "I'm Asking Her to Stay" all sound a wee-bit different. Good different.
If I could pick out a list of stand out tracks I would. But they blend so easily that it's hard to say which ones are the best. I will say that my favorites are "Middle of the Night," "For the Longest Time," and "Alley Cat." The only song I dislike on this album is "The Best in Me," and dislike sounds like too strong of a word. There's nothing really wrong with it, but it irks me. I can't explain that. Anyway, I'd have to say that this album sound put Sherwood on the map. Is it their Everglow? Not quite. Maybe next record. But it's certainly one of my favorite of 2007.

5 out of 5 stars Simply superb music.......2007-04-24

This album presents plenty of outstanding songs filled with a sense of Summer and an overall happy feeling. If you like Hellogoodbye, FM Static, Cartel, Plain White T's, well, you will love this band. They are a mix of all those bands, with their own style put in aswell. The lyrics are intricate and meaningful, the guitars are very upbeat and make it real easy to rock out to. These songs are great to dance to and make you want to get off your feet and start to dance and sing along. The combination of guitar, bass, and keyboard make a nice sound, unlike anything I have heard from a band before. Songs like "Song In My Head" and "Middle Of The Night" are sure to be on the top of your music chart. The band even throws in some remakes of a few older songs from preivous CDs which give you the sense of style from their older creations.

To put it simply, the music has a positive, upbeat sound and feel to it, unique and great to rock out to and sing along. It's the kind of music that you can feel in your body when you listen to it, giving you goosebumps it is so good. 5 out of 5. I'd give it a 6 if i could.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2007-04-22

Self-titled. If you're a fan of Sherwood, there's no doubt you're going to enjoy this album.

I know this is the Bangles CD, but PRINCE really out did himself with this one! His amazing writing skills always seem to impress me and I just love what he did for "Manic Monday". I also love "If She Knew What She Wants" and "Walking Down Your STreet". This CD should be re-released with the original 12" Mixes. That would be great!

1 out of 5 stars IF you want to know why the 80's sucked, here you go.......2007-05-14

I love the 80's? It's true, the 80's was a great era, but also a ________ era! The fashion, the video games, and theh music! We had awesoem music like Mercyful Fate, Slayer, and Metallica, but we also had horrible hair metal and countless _____ pop. Pop was good and bad, and here's a band that bad. Very _________ bad. Like Bangles bad. Here's the Bangles for you. A _________ group with three untalented _____heads.

The Bangles were some of the worst group of women ever. IF the Pussycat Dolls had an 80's version, it wuold be the Bangles. Well, the Bangles lryics were still tons better than The Pussycat Dolls lyrics, but the Bangles were extremely boring and stupid, not to mention pointless. Then again, a lot of pop music in the 80's was __________ horrible. At least we had METAL!!!!!! Just try to listen to this bland waste for thirty seconds. THe Bangles had one good hit, Walk Like an Egyptian, and they tanked faster than the Lustania (it's a _________ sinking ship!).

If you want a better pop album from the 80's, Hunting High And Low by a-ha Or Welcome To The Pleasuredome by Frankie Goes To Hollywood totally destroy this album anyday of the 80's. Or today. Whatever works.

Here comes the not helpful votes again!

4 out of 5 stars for a while ..........2006-12-12

For a while back in the 1980s, the Bangles - fronted by the inimitable Susanna Hoffs - practically defined the upbeat Girl Band phenomenon. Lightly packaged female angst about men, relationships, and getting to work late again combine with one of the all-time most memorable tunes ('Walk Like an Egyptian') to make DIFFERENT LIGHT an eminently own-able album, one that repays regular listening. The latter song also generated one of the all-time best early music videos.

Influences? One thinks of Heart, especially in the broody voice of Vicki Peterson, who looks seriously offended on the album paperwork. There's an almost Dylan-esque ironic randomnness in the lyrics of 'Egyptian', though the similarities end there.

In sum, a tight sound and a fun band to watch. 'Generative of a question that may await resolution in eternity: 'What ever happened to the Bangles?'

5 out of 5 stars The Bangles Best!.......2006-03-22

I would say get this and don't even bother with the Greatest Hits album. You don't need to have "Eternal Flame" or "Going Down to Liverpool". I remember friends of mine seeing them live and RAVING about them. And these guys were into metal! Susanna Hoffs is ultra hot. Between her looks and that sexy voice she is really special and she still looks amazing. This album has their 2 best songs- "Walking Down Your Street" and "If She Knew What She Wants" and their 2 biggest hits- "Walk Like An Egyptian" and "Manic Monday". Susanna Hoffs is really hot- did I say that yet?

I was introduced to The Echoing Green on a compilation CD some years back, and thank god for that. This band keeps getting better and better. There aren't many albums (by many artists) that I can sit through and listen to every track without getting bored, but The Winter of Our Discontent has me hooked on every song. Beautiful tones, poetic and meaningful lyrics, and talented vocals. A must have for any fan of electronic music.

Favorite Songs: Apology, Story of Our Lives, and the cover of New Gold Dream.

With "Testify to Love," the longest running No. 1 Christian single of the 1990s and 1999's Dove Award-winner for Pop Song of the Year, A Maze of Grace hardly falls to the wayside with the release of In a Different Light. Yet even with Nikki Hassman's departure and the subsequent addition of Cherie Paliotta, Avalon has another monster hit. In a Different Light raises the bar on harmonics, resulting in a dense, rich sound that retains its slick pop veneer. The quartet has found a vocal balance that showcases individual differences without compromising the quality and consistency of the whole. "Let Your Love" gets funky and electronic with a pulsating dance beat beneath the upbeat anthemic melody; "Can't Live a Day" is a diva-style ballad; "I'm Speechless" is an octane-powered pop tune; and the title cut is an unadulterated smash featuring Avalon's signature tight group harmony on the refrain. --Paige La Grone

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-02-23

Avalon is definitely my favorite group ever!! This CD features my favorite members (Jody, Janna, Michael, and Cherie). I like the other members, too, but they're my favorite.
"Take You At Your Word" is really a cool song. I loved it the minute I heard it on their "Testify To Love: The Very Best of Avalon" CD. "In Not Of" is in the top three for this album. "In A Different Light" is a catchy tune that I think everyone will enjoy. "Can't Live A Day" shows off Janna's AMAZING vocal talent. The words are awesome--everything about this one is great. "Always Have, Always Will" is one of those songs that you get hooked on and are singing all day--something that Avalon tends to do to me on every release. "I'm Speechless" puts Cherie in the spotlight and is a big highlight for this album. "If My People Pray" and "Only For The Weak" are catchy but can be forgotten in the mix of all the other great songs. "Let Your Love" is FABULOUS! Love it, love it, love it! "Hide My Soul" shows YET AGAIN how good Mr. Jody McBrayer really is! He is just phenomenal. (I like to think how far he'd go on American Idol!) "First Love" closes things out with all four of the members each having a solo. Really great lyrics--fantastic song.
Overall, this CD is DEFINITELY awesome and I would DEFINITELY RECOMMEND THIS TO EVERYONE!

Loved the CD and I rank it in my favorites.

This CD sold me on Avalon. I had heard them on the raido and saw them live and thought they werent impressive. I heard this CD (after much prodding) and I really really like them. IADL is my favorite Avalon CD, hands down. I like their newer stuff too, but not as much. i really like them. but now Jody(dark haired guy) and Janna(girl with straighter hair) are the two that are still in the group. Cherrie and Michael both quit and there are new people, Michelle (i think) and Greg. they are pretty good, but i think Jody Janna Cherrie and Michael made the best Avalon.

3 out of 5 stars Too bad she uses electronic drum.......2004-02-16

I'm a little biased here because I hate electronic drums. And I hate electronic drums because I love acoustic drums, real drums, someone behind the drum set playing.

The musics are calm, good, not outstanding, but good as an ambiental sound. There is not too much drum, but even so I'd like to NOT hear programmed drum. Why not use a real drummer if all other instruments use real players?

If it wasn't for this flaw, I'd give it four stars.

5 out of 5 stars A good blend of pathos and restraint.......2002-12-22

The compact elegance of these pieces suggests their role as incidental music. So, she has taken some of her better-known work and scaled it down a little. The melodies and dynamics are intact, but there's a new intimacy in these tracks.

The beefed-up piano and violin make the "Crying Game" suite less mournful, and more charming. It sounds more like a PBS detective movie score in this version. "Pie Jesu" is gorgeous, and the musical structure allows the soprano vocal to hold our attention. "Turbulent Serenity" has appeal similar to the first track, though it doesn't rely on a repeated melodic line. "Moments in Love" is fantastic, and would be even more beautiful if no other instruments were added to the piano. The second half of this track shows the playful synth and percussion elements that arise in a few other spots, similar to Stewart Copeland's film/TV work.

Oddly, the two "American History X" pieces lose a shade of their original power in their less "epic" treatments on this album. Here, it doesn't sound like an underworld orchestra competing with a choir of angels as it did in the film.

"The Club With No Name" is an exotic, trip-hop blend of Mychael Danna and Angelo Badalamenti. "A Different Light" is, for me, the high point of the album - beautiful, melancholy and slow. The e-minor drama of this piece evokes images of someone standing in a vast farmland field at dawn, trying to cope with the tragedy of the night before. "A Kind of Clue" is jazzy fun, with great use of a muted trumpet. "An Inspector Calls" has a strong Sting flavor, "Blue Turtles"-era.

In all, this is a great showcase for Dudley's skill at weaving emotion into her scores, and for her sophistication. She had the benefit of extensive pop exposure as a member of The Art of Noise. "A Different Light" is a good marriage of classical and pop.

5 out of 5 stars very engaging.......2002-03-21

There's a leanness and intelligence to all of the pieces here. I find myself drawn into it everytime I put it on. Its a very hard album to pidgeon hole. Its a bit neoclassical, a bit minimalist, and even a touch electronic. But it also carries some real emotional content. Very fresh and non-derivative. Try it you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Too good for words.......2001-12-16

this is her best by far no question. you could listen to this 12 times and hear different tones each time.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Album.......2001-10-02

This was a pleasant surprise. I found this album quite by accident. Anne Dudley's music has almost always been compelling to me. On this recording she reworks pieces from her career - from Art of Noise to commercial work to film scores. It's a wonderful life and she has lived a full one.

The strings on this release are lovely. The solos beautiful, the new arrangments stirring. I highly recommend this record for those who are lovers of all types of music.

5 out of 5 stars Radio play for Doug Stone.......2006-03-22

To Gary Linger in Tx. The song "time" from this album is getting radio play on US97 here in Hot Springs Ar. I haven't heard the whole album yet (am about to purchase it), but the one song is exceptional (hence the 5 stars).

    5 out of 5 stars Nashville Sound?.......2005-05-29

I am not really able to rate this album but I thought I would write this to see if Doug Stone gets any radio play from this album. I will guess NO! When singers like Allan Jackson and Travis Tritt and George Strait start getting pushed aside I will stop listening to new country till it becomes an industry of innovation and freedom for artist. I don't listen to new country much anymore so if anybody is aware of Dougs new album getting radio play leave a post please? That might make me feel their is hope for country yet.

Prime Cuts: How Do You Get Off the Moon, Let the Light Shine on You, Millionaire

All through the 90s, neo-traditionalist Doug Stone has garnered for himself a plethora of indelible radio hits including "(I'd Be Better Off In) a Pine Box," "Little Houses," "Jukebox With a Country Song," "Warning Labels," "I Never Knew Love" among many others. However, with the advent of the post Shania Twain-era quest for younger and more hip artists, somehow Stone's favor with country radio started to wane. And after a few missteps, namely the abysmal "Make Up in Love" CD and the largely ignored "Long Way Home," Stone is finally back with his first album of new and stellar material in years. Returning to his mother milk of spiffy romantic balladry, Stone has once again proved that he has not lost an iota of his affecting élan. Vocally at his apogee, Stone's unmistakably tenor has had never been marked by such a rejuvenated maturity that encompasses both depth and dimension.

Released under the enterprising independent Lofton Creek imprint, "In a Different Light" contains 4 evergreen pop covers, 8 new songs and 2 of Stone's big hits. Of the new songs, "How Do You Get Off the Moon" is the grand slam of romantic excavates. Invoking the quixotic mesmerism of the galactic stars, on this Randy Boudreaux, Donny Kees and Kerry K. Philips composition, Stone is all out to please his lady friend. Sung with not a modicum of pretension, "How Do You Get Off the Moon" ranks lofty as one of Stone's romantic classic. Equally heart throbbing is "Let the Light Shine on You" which is another Randy Boudreaux co-composition. Romantic intoxication has never been more sweetly deadly as this fiddle and steel guitar infused ballad. A reprise of Stone's number 1 hit ballad "In a Different Light" further enhances the romantic aura of the album. Even when it's recorded over a decade and a half ago, "In a Different Light" is still fresh and illuminating. Further in-roads to the heart are found in the plaintive big ballad "The Beginning of the End." This Rusty Van Sickle and Jeff Jones ballad that tells of the story of a suspecting husband hit by the news of a relationships end is emotionally riveting.

Of the covers, vanguard single "Georgia on My Mind" is the old Hoagy Carmichael's chestnut. Delivered at a languid pace with that after dark jazzy tavern feel, Stone's take of "Georgia" has an inveigling feel found on Willie Nelson's "Crazy." With the promptings of some sweet sounding steel guitars, the Ande Rand and Buck Ram pop classic "Only You (And You Only)" has a genial rustic appeal that could work with country radio. Lest one gets the impression that Stone is mawkishly maudlin, this Georgian native does swagger with some machismo on the bluesy "Tell It Like It Is."

Though the name Doug Stone is synonymous with romance, acute fans would also realized that he has had recorded his share of humorous paeans. Adding to Stone's corpus of drollery classics such as "She's Got a Future in the Movies," "Millionaire" is a light weight ditty has a broken hearted protagonist trying to comfort himself that his estranged wife has freed him to meet a widow of a millionaire. Tackled with a light hearted flare over a catchy tune, "Millionaire" is indeed quite fetching.

Overall, "In a Different Light" is Doug Stone's best album in years. With a heavier tilt towards romantic balladry, Stone is vocally at his best. And like his previous CDs, the songs here are meticulously chosen, melodiously superior and emotionally searching.

    Album Description

This is the debut album from a high-energy dance act from Sweden that combines pounding trance beats with soaring synth melodies and dreamy vocals. Most of the singing comes from a beautiful young woman named Zandra, but other guests pop up, including Casey "3PM" from the band Wideband Network, and there are some intense instrumentals thrown into the fray as well. The music of Nevarakka fits into the new breed of melodic dance music, where synthpop melodies combine with modern trance for a beautiful and infectious sound. Fans of acts like Delerium, Schiller, Blank & Jones, ATB, etc. will find similarities, as well as new surprises.

5 out of 5 stars A High Energy Dance Album including vocals of Casey.......2005-06-09

This is a very high-energy album that includes the vocals of Casey from The Wideband Network, and the vocals of Zandra. From my own opinion, I think that my favorite three songs are "Secrets", "I am trying", and "Why". I would recommend this album to anyone looking for a a high-energy dance album. And also, it is my favorite synthpop album. I would say that Nevarakka is a rising star!

    Album Description

Cosmicity returns with the band's best album ever, mixing the catchy, simple synthpop structures and songs that made the band popular from the beginning together with a modern edge and slick production.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Album.......2003-03-01

I got into synthpop just a couple of years ago, and Cosmicity was one of the first acts I really explored. The first album I heard was "Isabella" and I thought that was amazing. After hearing that album, I wanted to hear more and subsequently tracked down other albums by Cosmicity. I previously thought that Isabella was the best, but then I heard Pure. This album is spectacular. Literally every track is a gem. Mark has always explored a lighter sounding synthpop, but with this album he seems to combine that sound beautifully with some of the most insightful, yet somehow amusing, lyrics I've ever heard. My personal favorite tracks are "I Want You," "Let Me In," "Escapism," and "I Have Nothing." I would consider this album a must have for all fans of synthpop.

4 out of 5 stars As tasty as 'purplesaurus rex' and snackcakes.......2003-03-01

Ever looked at your CDs, and had a hard time choosing between tossing something on by Pet Shop Boys, OMD, Erasure, New Order, or A-ha??

Yeah? Ok, well this album can rid you of that tremendous choice.

No? Well, all I can say is that I pity you and I hope your music collection gets better soon. Buying this CD will help you on your way. In fact, it is one of the early steps to recovery.

So what do you want me to say? This is a strong release from a talented band. It has good songs and great songs, highs and lows, twists and turns.

Goes well with thrill seekers and schizophrenics.

    5 out of 5 stars DEFEAT.......2003-02-27

The first time I heard Defeat I knew I wanted it. I actually found the single (which I recommend if you can find it) and listened to the song on repeat for 3 days. The rest of the cd is similarly good. I also recommend Cosmicity's Isabella cd.

    5 out of 5 stars Pure Music.......2003-02-26

This CD has been in constant rotation ever since I got it many months ago. Cosmicity has refined his sound to create even more catchy/complex songs that tear at the soul. His lyrics are more complex then I have ever heard before. He music is catchy and you will find yourself singing along and singing long after the CD has stopped spinning.

Some standouts on this CD include: "I Want You" a poppy song with a infectious melody, "Let Me In" a more minamilist song with amazing synth programming, it is a song of longing which really connects with reality. "Escapism" the only instrumental on the CD a very nice touch to set off all the other songs on the disk. "Hotel Allegro Chicago" a nice finish to the album, a slower and slightly darker song.

Overall this is definately a must have for anyone who likes electronic/pop music. A mix of sounds/moods and lyrical complexity gaurantee this album constant rotation in my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Purification for the soul........2003-02-14

Love it. I just got this cd and it's already one of my favorites of all time. It's exactly what I look for in a cd. The music and lyrics are brilliant, and you can tell there is passion behind them. There are dancy songs and mellow songs, yet a consistency that makes the album a cohesive whole. Best song is "I Want You." It's a perfect mid-tempo song with a melody that sticks in your brain. Other standouts are "Darkness," "Something," "Let Me In," "I Have Nothing," and "The Princess of Detroit." The only track I don't dig is "The Perfect Shape." You want it to go somewhere that it never does. With that being the only negative, I highly recommend this cd. And for the record, it definitely does not sound like Erasure. The song "I Have Nothing" is reminiscent of Pet Shop Boys, but Cosmicity definitely has its own unique sound. One warning: don't listen to this before the previous album Binary Language of Love. I made that mistake, and Binary didn't even compare, yet it probably would have been good if I'd heard it before Pure.
