Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Originally written off as a nonthreatening rejoinder to Jeff Buckley, Duncan Sheik has quietly redeemed himself since his self-titled 1996 debut. Trading in the airy detachment of previous releases for a more immediate sound, the New York singer-songwriter's fourth album fizzes with electronics, distortion, and a newfound pop sensibility. Producer Patrick Leonard (Madonna, Jewel, Elton John) keeps things bright and breezy, forcefully shaking Sheik's predisposition for Nick Drake-style moodiness on wonderfully optimistic numbers like "On a High" and "Start Again." But the most surprising twist comes from "On Her Mind," cowritten with Mick Jones of Foreigner, a track that fully dramatizes Sheik's desire to breathe new life into his folk-rock roots. --Aidin Vaziri

Album Description

No shortcuts. No compromises. No BS. From their modest beginnings in New England's hardcore scene to their current status as one of the most influential and inspirational forces in modern music, Killswitch Engage have played by these three simple rules. With their new, fourth album, As Daylight Dies, KsE are proving that if you keep playing the game your way, you'll eventually change the rules for everyone else. We never consciously went out of our way to be different, guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz says from the band's home base in Westfield, Massachusetts. When we started this band, we just wanted to play cool riffs and scream and sing. We liked many different sounds so we tried to incorporate all these rock and pop styles while keeping a good, solid metal mentality. Eleven songs strong, As Daylight Dies isn't just a testament to the band's original vision; it's also their strongest fusion of aggression, melody, rock and metal to date.

5 out of 5 stars Innovative and Pounding.......2007-07-13

"As Daylight Dies" would have to be one of the best metal CD's I have heard in some time. Combining raging grind vocals with clean and harmonic vocals, Killswitch Engage succeed in creating something that was new and still succeeded in giving the eardrums a good smashing.

The sonic range of the vocals is simply amazing, changing from grind to clean and back again with lightning rapidity. Everything if screeching wails to almost rock-like singing are on the CD and in each track. That alone makes the songs worth hearing.

Add to that the high quality of the musical work, and you have a great CD. The music is fast, furious and heavily pounding. Your hearing is going get pretty hammered over all the frequency range you can hear. It is heavy, harmonic and savage all in one. I loved every deafening second.

The subject matter tends toward the abstract, and may not suit the fanatical epic metaller. That said, anyone looking for something a bit new and different will not be disappointed. This is great metal: period.

3 out of 5 stars It is decent........2007-07-04

Definitely not their best, but still good.
I wish their singer would try to sing a slightly different melody every once in a while. The same melody gets old after two albums and many b-sides of it. =P
Not a bad album at all. But, Killswitch has done better.
If it comes down to choosing between this and End of Heartache go with the latter. It's just a better album.

4 out of 5 stars Gives Me Hope For The Future of Metal!!!!!!!.......2007-06-29

I'm a child of the 70's and having spent my teen years in the 80's (which I consider to be the golden age of metal; Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Ozzy at the high point of his solo career) as a metal head I felt that since the early 90's that the genre had been relegated to tone deaf bands with cookie monster singers seeing how loud they could be. This CD has given me hope! Unbelievable how KSE can be so heavy yet so melodic at the same time. While there are traces of cookie monster vocals, Howard Jones can actually sing unlike alot of his counterparts. Yes some reviewers complain about how all the songs are pretty similar and yes most of the songs do have the same formula (probably the only thing that keeps me from giving this 5 stars), but this music is so powerful who cares?Standout tracks are "This Is Absolution" and "My Curse".

1 out of 5 stars Formulaic and beaten to death sound........2007-05-26

Ever since the explosion of metalcore in 2003, dozens upon dozens of bands have popped up in the scene attempting to recreate KSE's masterful "Alive or Just Breathing" including KSE themselves.

2004's End of Heartache was listenable but obviously watered down for mainstream appeal, both lyrically and sonically. However, since that time, the tried and true KSE formula is now a tired and beaten to death sound. I can name close to a dozen bands that sound pretty much exactly like what is contained on this album, and even musically better in some cases.

Diecast(almost exact carbon copy), Still Remains, It Dies Today, All That Remains, Bullet For My Valentine, Hell Within, Caliban(Opposite From Within), and on and on. With so many bands riding the same exact wave, you'd think that KSE would add something new and progressive into the mix. Instead, they seem to be content with putting out another album that fits perfectly into the metalcore formula.

At least bands like All That Remains add some death elements and blazing solo work, some semblance of change. KSE have now fallen behind those that have copied them in the first place, but of course their mainstream appeal and sales will continue to soar. I suppose all the Slipknot kids have already jumped onto the KSE boat. I now place them in the same radio-metal category as A7X and Atreyu. Terrible.

5 out of 5 stars 1 part melodic metalcore, 1 part melodic death metal.......2007-05-18

Killswitch Engage has always incorporated melodic death into their music, but on their latest release, the melodic death really dominates. here and there there are metalcore breakdowns. they still rock though. I disagree with the one who says metalcore is about ex-girlfriends. I own several metalcore CD's and not one of them mentions relationships gone bad. somebody better reread the lyrics on all their CD's. other metalcore bands to consider are Himsa, Zao, Demon Hunter, Still Remains, the Showdown, A Life Once Lost, Underoath, As I Lay Dying, Underoath, Watch Them Die, Hedfirst, Cataract, and Winter Solstice.

Great Northern sounds a great deal like Elliot Smith, with a tiny bit of The Cranberries thrown in for good measure. The overall style is mellow, with haunting vocals that are reminiscent of Sun King by The Beatles. The sound is consistent, and the samples available are a good indication of the entire album.

It really is Shoegazing music, but the vocalists are too powerful to be firmly put in this category.

If there is any criticism worth a one star deduction, it is that the music itself, while well orchestrated, is a bit simple. Contrast that with Smith, who threw a lot of goings on behind his melodies, and made for far more interesting compositions.

5 out of 5 stars Long time ago..........2007-04-12

I first heard Dropping Daylight about 4 and 1/2 years ago when they were known as Sue Generis. They played in a small coffee shop in St. Cloud, MN. They are an unbelieveable band to see live. There new album Brace Yourself is an amazing album and it was nice to see them throw in some of there old songs from there first CD Back To Nowhere in the album.

4 out of 5 stars Dropping Daylight - Brace Yourself.......2006-12-10

The Forward: Although I've heard many people classify Dropping Daylight as a "punk" band, it couldn't be further from the truth. If you're looking for quality punk music, try Rise Against. Moving on...

The Up Side: Tell Me was the first song I'd heard from Dropping Daylight, and it's probably one of the best tracks on an already solid Brace Yourself. The gritty vocals mesh well with the hard rock guitars and tasteful piano melodies, building up to an over-driven, anthemic chorus Creed only wish they could have written. The hard rock meets piano style continues for almost the entire record, save for a ballad towards the end, giving Brace Yourself an accessible flow the entire way through.

The Down Side: Although the whole piano angle gives Dropping Daylight a unique flavor, I can't help but feel like they're a little bit too similar to other, more famous bands. Heavy traces of Breaking Benjamin, Nickelback, Ben Folds Five and of course Creed, can be heard the entire way through. Since Brace Yourself is a debut, this isn't really a big deal, but if DD really want to make a name for themselves, they'll have to break the mold and come with a style all their own next time around.

The Conclusion: Brace Yourself is a very safe, commercial hard rock record. Almost anyone into rock or pop can find something to enjoy here, and those who say they can't are just being stupid.

The End.

5 out of 5 stars I know it's been said, but seriously AMAZING.......2006-11-03

We seen these guys in concert about 2 years ago when they opened for Simple Plan. We had never heard of them, but we were blown away. We became instant fans. At the time only their 4 song EP was out. We got it and listened to it over and over. Several months later we had the opportunity to see them in concert again. It was a small show, but they performed like they were playing in front of thousands, giving it their all and rocking their hearts out. These guys are very talented and you won't be dissapointed if you buy this CD. Every single song is a winner. Trust me, this will become one of your favorite CD's.

5 out of 5 stars I was amazed seeing these guys live.......2006-07-12

Hey everyone,I'm from mexicocity and I remember I saw dropping daylight 1 and a half year ago opening for Trapt in Boston,MA. When this guys appeared on stage they didnt cause any emotions to the people, they looked like amateurs who were just trying to have an opportunity. Nobody was paying attention to this guys when they came out on stage, but as they started to play, everybody got in complete silence, including me. I was amazed, seriously amazed. The way these guys mix the piano and the rock riffs, they move amazing on stage. I remember they opened with the song take a photograph, and I liked it, the second one was my favourite,War song, This song sounds amazing live, i was really in shock. When the show finished everybody bought their EP, and I asked the singer when were they going to have an debut album. He told me summer 2006, and i promised him to buy it, and since that day I waited a lot of time, and now that I have the album in my hands, all I can say is buy this great album.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best new bands out there.......2006-07-12

I saw these guys when they opened up for Mraz in Mesa, AZ and were blown away by their music and stage presence. I had never heard of them, but was very impressed. I immediately bought the demo they were selling at the show. When Brace Yourself came out, I wasted no time in purchasing it either. Hard driven, melody-laden tunes highlight this very strong breakout album by this Minnesota foursome. Led by pianist/singer/songwriter Sebastian Davin, it's easy to make comparisons to Ben Folds, but this album has much more depth. Many bands come to mind when I listen to these guys: Ben Folds, Incubus, Hoobastank...I even heard stuff that sounded Dream Theater-ish. The well-crafted, energized songs play one after the other and it becomes apparent that this is one of the best new bands out there. You should definitely pick this CD up ASAP, and if you get the chance to see them live, dont miss it!

Then buy this album. I saw them live in a little club in Virginia on a Monday night and there was hardly any one there. I could not believe there was not not a packed house. If people had only known what they were missing...
Bo and Bear are just awesome guys along with the other boys in the band. They are amazing on stage and quite sexy I might add. If you like up beat rock and roll that makes you just feel goood DO NOT pass up an chance to see this band in South Carolina or anywhere. And DO buy this album. It is a cure for any depression.

5 out of 5 stars Needtobreathe/Daylight.......2006-11-18

I bought the album after meeting the Rinehart brothers in Boston for a label gathering. They played two acoustic songs "shine on" and "You are here".. totally hooked from that moment on. Ordered the album in so I would receive it on the release date 04 April 06 and it's been my most played on my iPod ever since then.

The breadth and range they display in their first non-independent release is outstanding. Catchy hooks, outstanding lyrics and such a passion for what they do is obvious from the first to the last track.

Seen them live several time since, making the journey from Boston to Baltimore (8 hrs driving) and flying from Boston to Charlotte on Dec 1st 2006 to see them again. If you get the chance to see them live, don't waste it. They are even better when live!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great songs that stick to your mind!.......2006-11-16

This is one of the few CDs out there that you actually like every single song. And if you listen to them more than one time, they'll keep coming to you all day long. I was kind of skeptical when I read people saying that they love every song, but now I can confirm it myself. And this is NTB's first album! Can't wait to see what's next!

This is a great collection of songs and very uplifting and inspirational. All of the songs are beautifully written and sung by Brooke Fraser. I listen to it over and over again. If you want to hear something fresh and inspiring, have a listen to this one. It's a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Great Find... a Pleasant surprise.......2006-02-27

I had $8 NZ left at the airport when leaving Christchurch, NZ this January. There was a table of CD's, priced at $8.00 So, I asked for a NZ artist and the clerk suggested this album, What to Do with Daylight.

This was such a pleasant 'find'. I really enjoy Brooke's style, and her music. She has a soulful voice, and seems to pull from many styles. I would classify her work as a bit of Sarah McLaughlin, Louise Goffin and similar.

I like Save the World the best, followed by Lifeline.

Long Gone Before Daylight marks a shift in theme for the Cardigans. Their last album, 1998's Gran Turismo, was a masterpiece. With Peter Svensson's quirky, driving, ultra-modern pop backing Nina Persson's icy dissections of doomed relationships, it was a Love Album informed more by Bret Easton Ellis than any high romance. So catchy, so cool, and so incredibly bleak--exceptional, intelligent pop in the tradition of Soft Cell and ABC. Long Gone Before Daylight, then, comes as something of a shock when the opening "Communication" and "You're the Storm"--both lush and beautiful pop--find Persson struggling for love then, come the Doors-like "And Then You Kissed Me," actually finding it. Real love, too--not the fascinatingly twisted variety of before. It's a terrible shame, for love reduces the Cardigans to the level of other musicians. But then, unpredictable devils, they hit you with "Couldn't Care Less," as Persson loses it all again, in the following "Please Sister" begging for advice, succor, anything. And now you realize; it's a pop-rock opera, the tale of one heart's tortuous and tortured journey through the mill. And it's superb. Persson, the finest pop lyricist working today, is on peak form while the band's back-to-roots grand piano and grander acoustic guitars provide an appropriately magnificent backing. --Dominic Wills

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars They just do not make albums like this.......2007-06-11

You could only dream of making an album this good.

One of The Cardigans best skills is re-invention. On this album they became the perfect band with the perfect album. Nina's lyrics are her best ever, and delivered with that irresistible silky Swedish sex-kitten voice. Peter Svenssons guitars and arrangements are brilliant. They had completed this album a couple of times and chucked and did it again until it was as good as they could make it.

Lyrically and musically, this album takes them into the rarified stratosphere of must-have albums, and without a doubt into one of the 50 best albums ever. These guys found some really good magic here, a beautiful mixture of light and gold-dust, "champagne from last New Year's", a slightly euphoric candle-lit warmth with an eternal return of love and loss, salt in your wounds and a promise of your heart's desire.

4 years after its release, I still think it is incredible. To me that means it is going to stand the test of time. And maybe that's because they have put down some timeless tracks, stuff that will always meet you halfway, and touch you right where you are.

The band might be long gone before daylight, but the album they left behind is in it for the long haul.

5 out of 5 stars It's great!.......2007-04-17

The Cardigans are probably the most exciting group to come out of Sweden in a generation. This album is their fifth(!), and it has a great, smooth sound that differs from their earlier "Pop" tunes. I love the songs For What It's Worth and Live And Learn, but there is not a bad track on this entire album.

So, if you like smooth and mellow music by a great band, then you really must consider getting this album - it's great! I love this album and highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps the most perfect pop album of all time........2007-03-22

I don't usually write reviews, but this album is so outstanding that I couldn't hold back. Some complain that Long Gone Before Daylight doesn't sound like the Cardigans they are used to hearing (think Lovefool) but in this case that is not a bad thing. This album is much more mature and laid back than previous ventures and the result is a sound that is simply sublime. The album is full of songs that all sound great together and while they are stripped down they are also somehow more epic in their simplicity. Long Gone Before Daylight is innocent and dark, pure and flawed, simple and grand, and ultimately as close to perfect as any album I have ever heard.

4 out of 5 stars The best album..........2007-01-15

I think Long Gone Before Daylight is Cardigans best album so far...though it's very hard to choose just one...It's just amazing....

5 out of 5 stars needs a few listens.......2006-12-10

this recording at first caught me so off guard that I almost didn't like it. the more I played it I accepted it as another beautiful cardigans cd. I can hear more cardigans the more I play it. Communication after a while became a brilliant opener. Really his best song like Peter says. It's defintely very special. The whole cd actually.

Gainesville, Florida's Sister Hazel would have you believe that resuming indie status has given the band renewed vitality, and judging by the sheer force of Chasing Daylight, you'd probably be inclined to agree. Opening with a trio of songs that are shamelessly buoyant, the band makes clear its determination to craft anthems, and they're not about to let lost love stand in the way of a hooky chorus, as songs like opening track "Your Mistake" make clear. The relatively somber ballad "Best I'll Ever Be" divides the disc between its utterly accessible first half and slightly more adventurous last half, but generally speaking, the quintet stays on point, delivering smooth, sing-songy country-dusted roots-rock full of wide-open spaces and palpable longing. Skynyrd is subtly noted in the dirty guitar graffitied across the opening of "Swan Dive," though their Florida brethren never had the vocal harmonies mustered by Sister Hazel at full tilt. And while a full string section adds shadow and nuance to these compositions, Chasing Daylight is straight-up, radio-friendly, and as comfortable as worn denim. --Kim Hughes

Album Description

The band opted to move more from the major label mainstream back to their grass-roots fan base with this indie release. Chasing Daylight shows Sister Hazel's growth with everything from rock mantras to moving ballads. Sixthman label. 2002.

1 out of 5 stars Downfall.......2007-03-06

This album is a huge downfall for this band. Their best album is Fortress. I bought this one expecting to be thrilled and stunned. I wasn't. The lyrics are just not up to snuff. The music in each song seems the same. If you really want this album I recommend buy it used. It seems that good bands like those are going down the tubes. Sorry Sister Hazel.

5 out of 5 stars SH Rocks!!!.......2005-09-17

Okay, somebody should have made these guys more famous! Not that it's stopping them from being on of the best rock bands ever, or hometown heroes for all of us down here in Gainesville...
This album is great because it's not trying to break into pop culture. It's semi-pop, quasi-country southern rock that represents the band's roots to a "t": a southern college town. That's probably why G'ville is only place in the world where chain bookstores and music outlets sell out of their albums on a daily basis. And no one has had the full experience of SH until they've been to a G'ville show (seriously, when the whole crowd breaks into the chorus of "All For You", or more recently when the guys did "A little like Heaven" from Drew Copeland's solo debut, and we all went insane, the (literally!) five minute standing ovations... you just have to be there!)
I highly recommend to anyone, though if you haven't been initiated yet, make sure you go back to the older albums too!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2004-12-04

I was a Sister Hazel fan when they were still playing on the side of the road in Gainesville. This is one of my favorite cds of theirs. It's nice to have a cd where all of the songs are great, not just one or two.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best artists of our time!.......2004-08-18

I still can't deside if I like this or fortress more, however, Chasing Daylight was undoubtedly one of the best CD's of 2003. ken Block has a very unique voice that adds to the awesome songwriting, and unbelievable music. This CD is definately worth the money it costs. "Your Mistake" starts it off perfectly, and sets the tone for the rest of the album. It is ong of the best song's here. The song is catchy, and just fun to listen to. "Come around" is another unbelievable track, and is also very catchy. It's not as good as the first song, but it is a really great piece of music. "One love" comes next, but proves to be the weakest tracks so far. It has one of the weaker vocal tracks, but its still a good song. Track 4 plunges you into the albums first ballad with the epic and beautiful "Best I'll Ever Be", one of the best songs on the album, and of 2003. I love this song! "Life got in the way" has some great lyrics, and is yet another very catchy song. I didn't love this song the first few times, but it really is good music. "Everybody" is a rather funny song, because it's so happy, but it is one of the weaker songs on the album nonetheless. Still worth a lot of listens. However, if there is one song that hinders this album it's "Swan Dive", the next track. It doesn't even sound like sister hazel, and is by far their worst song ever. Its far to hard, and is just not what the band is good at. It sounds like some really crappy band would release this song, and it doesn't even come close to living up to the rest of this album. Even though the song is a letdown, "Killing me too" makes up for it comepletly. Excellent lyrics and music make it one of the best tracks on here, and just in case you haven't gotten over "Swan dive" yet, the band gives you "Sword and Shield" which is just plain cool music. An excellent guitar solo graces this song like no other. Now that the band figures you've forgotten "Swan dive" they give you the six minute "hopeless" which is great. No more and no less. After ten amazing songs, the band finally gives you the greatest song on the album. "Effortlessly" is the albums center masterpiece, and one of the best songs on the album. I could listen to it dozens of time and never get tired of it. The second best sister hazel song ever, right behind "your winter". "Can't believe caps off the album perfectly. Overall, this is one of the best albums in years, and should not be missed.

3 out of 5 stars This is not in the same league as Fortress.......2004-03-10

I honestly don't see how this album could get better reviews than "Fortress". Of the few songs on here that are strong not a one stands up to what Sister Hazel did on Fortress or Somewhere more Familiar. Please don't get me wrong I am a huge Hazel Nut, but I must say that this album borders on tedious. The song "Your Mistake" has all the qualities of a Hazel classic as does "One Love", but both sound like they've been done before. I also thought the sonic quality of the album was not as dynamic as Fortress - in this case the bass and drums seem to drown out the rest of the mix. This album does not suck by any means but it doesn't raise the bar either. I eagerly await the next Sister Hazel offering and will not miss them when the come to town!

In 1982, there were few groups as out of phase as CSN. Their supergroup status once lionized in the late '60s and early '70s had turned into liability. Viewed as fossils by the emerging MTV generation, they steadfastly stood with their heartfelt idealistic politics on their sleeve. Produced by El Lay producer extraordinaire Craig Doerge (known mostly for adding synthesizer to the work of Jackson Browne among others) and Stanley Johnson, Daylight Again features several noteworthy songs. "Wasted on the Way," "Southern Cross," and "Into the Darkness" are among the more substantial contributions from these musicians struggling to find their place in a world clearly getting away from them. --Rob O'Connor

      5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!.......2007-05-28

My most CSN(Y) album. I LOVE "Delta" most of all but in all actuality, I love all of the songs :) But "Delta" pulls at my heartstrings for some reason. I listen to it quite often. :) David Crosby has the voice on an angel.

Thanks for a job well done guys and thanks to you Amazon for selling this FANTASTIC piece of musical art.

5 out of 5 stars If you don't like this album check your pulse........2006-12-30

Many of the songs here made it to the Greatest Hits CD. In fact, I went to my music-downloading site to see if indeed it was a compilation! Check out the great rocking songs: "Wasted On The Way", "Southern Cross", "Since I Met You". And there is the wonderfully subdued "Delta" and "Daylight Again." Also, "Might As Well Have A Good Time" is also pretty good. Guess what: out of 11 songs only maybe 4 are filler. This is a statistically bizarre situation. Most albums by artists have one good song and the rest suck. I suspect that for many CSN fans who give it four stars, if the CD actually has hits on it that means the artists "sold out." I guess they are just frustrated musicians. God help us.

5 out of 5 stars My Always Album.......2006-11-04

Long time CSN&Y&anyone else they collaborate with fan, I welcomed this collection originally as a tape. ON first hearing, it became my favorite for road trips, traffic gridlock, kitchen clean up, or other jobs around the house. The mellow mood seems right for most of mine. I wore out the tape version, so the CD was the next logical step.

3 out of 5 stars Their weakest release.......2005-10-14

Save for the classic "Southern Cross" which is actually covered better by Jimmy Buffett, unsurprisingly, this album is the weakest ever released by the trio. I'd rec skipping it.
