When Fleetwood Mac regrouped in 1975, trading its British blues pedigree for a sunnier Californian spin on pop rock, vocalist, songwriter, and keyboard linchpin Christine McVie fit right in, belying her English origins to prove comparatively mellow alongside the edgier Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks' brooding crystal visions and anguished confessions. This 1985 solo outing is predictably solid, paced by midtempo rockers and vulnerable ballads that showcase McVie's cool, velvety alto, tidily crafted songs, and blue chip session help from friends like Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood, Eric Clapton, and Steve Winwood, who pitch in behind McVie's own crisp quartet. The set's most enduring track remains the single hit, "Got a Hold on Me," featuring Winwood's signature synthesizers, but admirers of McVie's work with the platinum Mac will find other charms. --Sam Sutherland

Not perfect, but close........2006-11-20
While I prefer her "In the Meantime" CD, this one has a lot of great tracks. Favorites, in addition to the two singles, include "The Challenge" and "I'm the One" -- the latter of which SHOULD have been a single. Given the emphasis on Stevie Nicks in the Fleetwood Mac history, one tends to forget how great a singer McVie is, with or without Lindsey Buckingham's production. Well, "I'm the One" erases any doubts. She's got a strong set of pipes. So sue her for often letting them grace gentler fare like the classic "Songbird".
Unfortunately, I never saw the video of "Love Will Show Us How," which I understand had McVie playing a Lucille Ball type character. Too bad. It would fit how I view this recording...a bit more playful and upbeat than Chris ever was with the Mac, and worth giving a look.

C. McVie .......2006-05-04
Christine McVie has many songs in this album that makes me love her voice and music and Fleetwood Mac also. I remember that the first song i hear of them - Got a hold on me- i begun to taste and like their work. This was many but many years ago, and till today produce something that makes me run .
Christine Proves She's "The Songbird".......2005-06-16
It has that marvelous "woody clarinet" voice of Christine at its absolute best and some of the most driving and melodic songs ever penned.
From the very fist note of the very first track: "Love Will Show Us How" you just know that you've made the best musical selection ever when you purchased this album.
Every track is a "keeper" . . . "Ask Anybody" . . . and then my own best of the best choice, "Got A Hold On Me" -- "I got a love . . this love . . got a hold one me . . . " the syncopated rhythmic beat is like a clock ticking away heart-beat after heartbeat of "this love" . . and it does have a hold on me!
And the beautiful poetic question in song, "Who's Dreaming This Dream" -- (who's dreaming this dream with me?) . . . this track alon all by itself will make you glad that you own this particular cd by Christine McVie!
If you were or are a fan of Fleetwood Mac . . or if you never even heard Fleetwood Mac . . or even if you didn't particularly like Fleetwood Mac, get THIS Christine McVie cd . . . you will never take it out of your cd changer . . it will find a permanent home there . . and in your musical heart and memory!
Thank You Ms Christine McVie for all of your musical gifts to us over the years . . and special thanks for THIS one . . it will always be remembered as your greatest and your best work! :)

Christine McVie, Fleetwood Mac's cool as an oyster chanteuse--ying to Stevie Nick's quirky yang--decided to pass on Mac's latest reunion efforts, prompting her former bandmates to insist that the icy blonde was fed up with the music business, and planned to retreat to her country home. But it seems that McVie was only fed up with her former compatriots, and stealthily recorded In the Meantime, her first solo album in two decades rather than participate in reconfiguring the seventies pop monolith. And just so we know she means business, she not-so-cryptically tackles the invitation from Mick, Stevie, Lindsay and John on the anxious and vituperrious "Bad Journey," leaving no doubt in fan's minds that she's shut the door on her past for good. Meantime finds the formerly winsome musician newly empowered with claws fully extended--penning songs that crackle with ire and ennui without any of the frothy self-deception of the past, whether on the casual hit-or-miss sex of "Anything is Possible" or the chilly kiss-off of "Sweet Revenge." --Jaan UhelszkiCustomer Reviews:

Adios Perfection.......2006-12-10
And then there's this.
What a disappointment. My guess is that there's a lot more to her not joining the reformed Mac. This is such a poor effort. The songs are commercial in a way that her fine tuned songs that reached artistic or commerical success never had to stoop. Christine, there was a period when we loved you. This cd was a tough break up for me, but it's just time to tell myself it's time to move on. Adios.
3 Stars just for showing her face!.......2006-08-10
Yes, she sounds great.....no this is not her best songwriting ( ala "booze" ) and yes the comparisons to FM are unmistakable on a few tracks but unfortunately there are too many throw away tracks.
Friend, You Are, Northern Star & Giving It Back should have been on FM's 2003, SAY YOU WILL and we wouldn't be here leaving disapointing reviews.
Chris, come back to us
Love Hate.......2006-02-22
I have recordings of Christine's all the way back to Kiln House. I absolutely love them. I have even made my own compilations of only her songs for my personal enjoyment. So, it's not that there's just too much Christine here and that Stevie and Lindsey, John and Mick are missing. It just isn't an immensely enjoyable album to listen to. I would probably stop in my tracks to listen to every lyric of a single song from this if it popped in over the sound system while I was out shopping. But as a whole, to me, the album is too repetitive. As a huge fan, I can honestly say that she has given us decades of beautiful music and has certainly given more to the world than most of us reading/writing these reviews. Christine, despite what I feel about this album, when all is said and done, you deserve a lifetime acheivement award. That's how good CHRISTINE MCVIE is....

Simply Sublime!.......2006-12-13
Simply gorgeous singers, crunchy arrangements, top-notch instrumentalists, fresh sound, well-crafted engineering and production. It's hard not to gush with positive adjectives!
I like the mixture of mainly classical favorites with a few pop, folk and spiritual songs thrown in. I'm a classically trained singer/composer/musician who also loves pop and rock, so I appreciate good quality music of many genres, especially those that integrate different influeces, like this does.
When you play this CD, you will find it hard to do anything but listen in awe - it makes your skin tingle, your soul awaken, your breath deepen! It's better than a shot of...well...you can fill in the blank!
I know all these songs are "popular" classics, so maybe some music snobs won't like the "mainstream"-ness of this. But on the other hand, those who aren't "into" classical music would actually like this (I challenge ANYONE not to like this CD!)
It was fun (and a nice surprise) to hear an arrangement of the British pop artist, Robbie Williams' song, "Angels" on the CD! This was one of Robbie William's big hits that made it across to the USA (I think)...
And what an orgasmic arrangment of "Windmills of your mind" - I love the subtle accordion in this, just tugging further on the heart strings! Wow.
I've heard many different arrangements of the classical songs, "The Flower Duet", Pachelbel's "Canon in D", "Barcarolle", "Cavellera Rusticana", "Ave Verum", "Ave Maria", and Barber's "Agnus Dei", but these really are fresh sounding and stirringly performed. Enough to make even the seasoned classical musican sit up and take notice. And entrancing enough to hook the new-comer to classical music.
I've started playing this CD to my young kids - what a fantastic introduction to classical music for them. (Watch out, it will make them distinguish good quality from cheap imitations!)
Infact, I'm so impressed with this CD, I am now going to buy several copies of it to give to my musician and non-musician friends for Christmas... I'm pretty sure they will all get as much joy from this as I have.
This would also be wonderful for wedding music, or any special occasion. (As well as just lovely for relaxing to at home). Very powerful.
Just heard them on Classic FM.......2006-12-03
They sound like great girls, each already more than a little accomplished. Interspersed in the interview were at least four complete tracks from the CD. Unbelievable sounds, harmonies and individual solo passages. Angelic is a perfect description.
I'm here today to buy it for myself.

Same Christine, Different Sound.......2006-02-03
It was well worth the wait. The sound is classic, exactly what you might think of when you think British blues. The re-mastering is better than anything I could have hoped for: pure, clear, digital sound. I can hear every intricate detail.
The songs themselves have a timeless quality:
"Wait and See" One of the most striking tracks. It follows classic blues progression format on the piano, and Christine's voice is almost haunting. I was in love with it after just one play.
"Close to Me" Sounds a lot like something she might release with Fleetwood Mac; very upbeat and catchy-this one includes some interesting guitar work.
"And that's Saying Alot" _very_ different sound for her, almost jazzy. Very smooth vocals. Even though it's such a different sound, it fits on this album.
Christine is a very talented singer-songwriter, and this is one effort that should not be passed up. Even after three decades, this music is a must-have for your collection, whether you're a Fleetwood Mac fan or not.
One suggestion I might make, however, would be to buy this album through an independent seller instead of directly from Amazon. I bought it new from a seller, for around 22 USD, including shipping, _and_ I got it before Amazon's promised time.

For Mac/McVie fans.......2006-12-24
On the other hand, fans can reflect on these pleasant chants, as to how important Christine's contribution to those Classic mid-1970s FM (no pun...) albums.
The opener, "Friend" could fit right into those abovementioned disks; so could the closer, "Givin' It Back". The latter has muted percussion and is a welcome change from the other cuts.
Is 20 years worth the wait?.......2004-08-25
I've been listening to Fleetwood Mac since 1972, when I was still in my teens and my brother-in-law turned me on to the "pre-Buckingham-Nicks" era of Fleetwood Mac with "Bare Trees", "Future Games", and "Mystery To Me". Now that I'm nearing 50, they've been my all-time favorite band through many incarnations. Anyone who listened to "Why" on the "Mystery To Me" album could hear that Christine's voice was magical.
I could talk about the Christine Perfect album or the Christine McVie album from '84, but this review is supposed to be about her new CD.
To be honest, I was expecting it to be more of the uptempo/pop sound that Christine infused into the band. Not that that's bad, but this CD is SO much more! You can't help but listen to it, and wonder where Stevie would fit into a background vocal, or what Lindsey would do, etc, but the collaboration between Christine and Dan Perfect is a breathe of fresh air.
You can hear some similarities in a melody here and there that will take you back and remind you of an old Mac song, all of the way back to a song from "Penguin". But this is definitely a fresh sound, and one that covers a variety of styles.
Rather than disect every tune and what it sounds like, suffice it to say, taking Christine's deep, lush, velvety vocals and adding them to a new sound is perfect (no pun intended) and Christine's voice is better than ever.
"Calumny" is particularly moving, and a song that'll run through your head for quite some time. Dan Perfect (Christine's nephew) was involved in the production, engineering and mixing. Talent obviously runs in the family.
I bought the import because I didn't want to wait until September '04, which was a wise move on my part. All I can hope for is that Christine doesn't wait another 20 years before releasing another CD (or whatever format we'll be listening to in 2024).
Anyone appreciating Christine's talented songwriting and sultry vocals will truly enjoy this one.
