It says something about the melodic powers of the Delgados when coming from the same geographic region as Belle & Sebastian and Teenage Fanclub, they can still melt hearts with their chiming guitars and bright choruses. Very disappointing, considering what it could have been.......2007-04-20

Take a look at the running times:

Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes

What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.

C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.

Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.

This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.

I listen to music all day with patients in my dental chair. This one is a winner with everyone. Patients always comment on how they recognize a song. Who doesn't love John Williams? His music transcends time.

JOHN WILLIAMS 40 Years of Film Music.......2007-01-10

This 4 cd pack is an anthology of all John Williams works. From his earlier works "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Jaws" right through "Indiana Jones" and the most recent"Star Wars" prequel movies are included. Williams work in thriller and horror are also included. If you are into soundtracks and love movie music this is an essential buy. The quality of the music is excellent. With ten or more tracks on each cd it's well worth the money.

Movie Music Magic & Memorabilia.......2006-12-13

This four CD set expands on the previously released John Williams Greatest Hits. It's a grand collection of nearly four hours of famous music scores from over forty years. There are many songs never before available in any collection. The short liner notes tell a great tale of musical movie history and include all of his numerous award nominations and wins. Each song (oddly enough) mentions the actors and the director, so fond are John Williams's memories of his work with these people. All of the conductors are mentioned along with specific orchestras, choirs, arrangement and orchestration specialists and even the publishers (contractual, I am sure). The only things missing are his early television scores, such as those for "Lost In Space" (by Johnny Williams back then). But with four discs, one has nothing to complain about and everything to enjoy!

John Williams: 40 Years of Outstanding Film Music.......2006-11-28

I have been a huge fan of John Williams and I have known about his music for years. However, I never actually bought any of his music on CD. I was rather skeptical about purchasing this CD but when it arrived I knew I had made the right choice. The sound quality of the compilation is outstanding. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do a great job under the direction of Paul Bateman. The original London Symphony Orchestra CDs of John Williams' Star Wars Trilogy CDs are marginally better but this is still a great CD compilation. If you love ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter, you will love this compilation soundtrack. Buy it, listen to these CDs in the car and enjoy every minute of the collection!!!

Delgados finish on a high note........2007-03-16

Who thought The Delgados could even attempt to top their masterpiece "Hate" album? I sure didn't. Even though I had read an article where Emma and Alun had stated they were aiming for a more stripped down approach, I wasn't quite prepared. So "I Fought The Angels" didn't leave a very strong impression first time out. How could it compared to the previous album opener? However as I continued listening what I realized that what The Delgados achieved on this ablum was to refine the songwriting to an ever higher level while stripping away some orchestration and chorales. In the end, form a song-writing perspective the 11 songs on this CD are as strong as any on Great Eastern and Hate.

I Fought the Angels - just builds verse after verse in intensity, no bridge, bloody brilliant

Is this all I came for? - I love Alun's lyrics here. "Dirty hands shape the keenest minds"

Come Undone - This is essentially a refinement on Woke From Dreaming. Very nice.

Get Action! - Once again great music, great lyrics, very upbeat message. Strong chorus.

Bits of Bone - this is obviously an experimental piece, more about the sonic effect, lyrics seem to be stand-in I-am-the-walrus type nonsense.

Girls of Valour - great Beach Boy type harmonies updated for the 21st century in the tempo they take with it

Now and Forever - one of those destined to be a lighter waving type anthem. Definitely has a U2 feel in the guitars. They couldn't have possibly ended on a higher note.

Great Scots.......2004-12-03

Ever since I heard Everything Goes Around the Water on a freebie cd from Select Magazine (RIP) i've been a massive fan of this truly indie Scottish group (they run the Chemikal Underground label). Pixies-esque on their first LP, Domestiques they've embraced many musical styles over the span of their excellent five albums (this is the fifth).

The fourth, Hate, saw them immerse themselves in epic orchestrations but, while final track Now and Forever harks back to Hate, this is by and large The Delgados at their most poppy and upbeat. Fellow Scots Belle & Sebastian had a similar Eighties-esque makeover on their last album with equally impressive results. Surely fellow vanguards of the "new Scottish gentry" Franz Ferdinand sang about on their debut, it's about time this group got the acclaim and sales they deserve.

This is the kind of album the phrase "all killers no fillers" was made for, but if I had to pick an absolute favourite track it'd be Everybody Come Down. Fan. Tas. Tic.

can't stop listening to it.......2004-11-29

Universal Audio is their masterpiece. I've been a fan since Peleton and have all their albums, so I think I have a bit of perspective. Oddly enough, even though the sound is stripped down from Hate, there so much happening sonically in each song that I unearth new sounds every time I listen. Universal Audio is so good that I can't listen to anything else. It truly bears repeated listening. Album of the year, definitely. Do yourself a favor and get this immediately. Highlights: The City Consumes Us, Sink or Swim, Bits of Bone, Girls of Valour, Keep on Breathing, Now and Forever, Come Undone. It's all good. I get chills when I listen to it.

Their Best.......2004-11-14

I really like the Delgados, but initially, I didn't like Universal Audio. It sounded bare compared to their traditional sound, and the songs were more sugary than I expected. After repeated listening, however, the album grew on me. The melodies sound more basic but there is a great deal of subtlety in the songs. The strings are gone, but the Delgados texture their songs brilliantly even without them. I especially like what they did with the vocals.

There is great variety in this album and all of the songs are great. Although I love the moody feel of Albums like Hate and Great Eastern and the great melodies of Peloton, Universal Audio is the best collection of Delgados songs thus far.

universally excellent .......2004-10-14

The fact that this is a wonderful album came as no surprise, and it will come of no surprise to anyone who likes this band. Songs like "everybody come down" sound like the best music that could have been written by a joint combo of the breeders , pixies and teenage fanclub and it is immediately infectious. There are other more broody numbers such as "i fought the angels" and "the city consumes us" but all have a sweet melodious undertone that is the hallmark of the music produced by this band.

Canada is a big nation with a lot of great music, but the Tragically Hip have absolutely no equal in the Great White North. While the band remains at best a cult hit in other parts of the world, they have reigned in the Canadian rock scene in a way that no other group has done since the '70s heyday of the Band, the Guess Who, and BTO. In the nearly two decades that the Hip has been writing and recording, they have never released a greatest hits album, so fans will revel in this long-awaited four-disc set. It kicks off with two CDs of music aptly named Yer Favourites. The 37 digitally remastered songs were chosen entirely by fans, with the exception of a pair of new tracks, a wry rocker dubbed "No Threat" and the understated "The New Maybe." The collection embodies the band's appeal; whether you're a fan of alternative music, mainstream rock, or bluesy country, the Hip make music that just feels really good to listen to. The package also includes two DVDs: the first, entitled "That Night in Toronto" is a concert that captures all the charm, eccentricity, and enthusiasm fans expect in a great Hip show. Highlights include a unique moment in which cameras capture thousands of fans singing along passionately to lyrics detailing Canadian war history ("Nautical Disaster"), as well as amped-up versions of older tracks, from "Blow at High Dough" to "Little Bones." Nothing Tragic about this box set.......2007-05-14

This box set is simply great. A fan of The Hip for the last 18 years, I would recommend this set to anyone. It features songs picked by fans and I think we did an awesome job. The two CD's are packed full of some of the greatest Hip songs making it so easy to pass a few hours. Beyond entertaining. Buy it, now.

I bought this as a present for my finace and he loves it. It comes with two CD's and two DVD's. These are great, the book is a little over rated, but for any tragically hip fan, this is an awesome box set!!

The DVD is the Drawing Card.......2005-11-10

As a long time fan of the Tragically Hip (since the 'Call The Office' days in London Ont.), the idea of a box set was not all that interesting to me, since I already have all the band's released music on cd, and then some. IMO, the song selection for the duo cd set is adequate, but too much good stuff seems to have been left off. 'Another Midnite,' from 'Up To Here,' for instance, is one of their most gorgeous yet left behind gems with a simply transcendant refrain, and it is no where to be found. Instead we get the predictable 'Lake Fever' and the heard too often 'Poets.'

No 'Vapour Trail' is also a travesty. But that is nitpicking, really, isn't it; as it would indeed be a difficult job for anyone to pick Hip songs to fill two cd's, as the Hip have so many good ones to choose from. They could have easily filled three cd's. For the uninitiated, this set isnt a bad bet, but I would advise heading straight to the individual records instead - anything from 'Henhouse' and beyond for their 'more atmospheric and ambient' phase - as I like to call it and anything prior to 'Henhouse' for their more rough and ready, blues based approach.

On to the DVD.

It's gorgeously shot, first of all, and very watchable. I cannot stand concert videos where the producers for some reason feel the need to change camera shots every two seconds. You dont watch a concert that way in real life so why would you want to on your TV?? Thankfully the producers of this DVD knew this.

The splitscreen effect is very cool. So is the 'real time' layout of the disk; what you get is the actual show as it unfolded that night with no edits, no splices, no overdubs and no coverups. You get the goofed cues, mangled verses, tripping and falling, and all the cool stuff that only live music can bring. Rock and roll aint supposed to be perfect, baby. Everything here is just as it happened that night, right down to audience noise in between encores. This is a very cool approach and hats off to whoever decided on it. The band obviously wanted a 'being there' atmosphere to be purveyed to the viewer, and it works.

The band itself, as most always, burns on this particluar night. They saunter on stage with no fanfare looking more like roadies than a 'rock band,' and that in itself is one of the most endearing things about the Hip - their refusal to get caught up in any of that rock star trip crap.

The 'Hip Pocket' - the rhythm section of Sinclair, Fay and Langlois - is as tight and perfectly timed as ever. In fact, this is probably the tightest pocket in rock; Sinclair is (and always has been) a walking metronome on bass. Baker adds his own flourishes as he always does whether it's with this cool sounding sorta pedal steel thing he uses on 'Vaccination Scar' or it's his bluesy licks on 'New Orleans Is Sinking.'

That said, I have some issues with Sir Gordon Downie as of late.

Now Downie has always been one of the most, ahhh, peculiar frontmen in rock. He's a twisting, gyrating sweating maniac lost in his own world and has always been absolutely riveting to watch.

HOWEVER.

Number one, what's with the guitar?? You cant hear it anyway, so it appears to be more of a prop. Downie is at his manic best when he is not tied down holding a guitar, as he proves indisputedly on the second song, 'Fully Completely.' The guitar, for me, takes away from the overall Hip experience.

My second issue is Gordie's habit of changing vocal melodies so far off the original that he veers out of pitch from time to time, and he also seems to want to sometimes change his vocal timing/phrasing as to be out of sync with the music sometimes. I dont know what he does that for. Boredom of singing it the same way for so long?

Lastly, and most importantly, is Gord's 'ranting.' I enjoy a good Gord 'rant' as much as anybody, but does he have to talk over every guitar solo ??? Over most every instrumental break?? I think Gordo should perhaps consider limiting the ranting a bit - so as to allow the audience to actually be able to hear the musical interaction going on behind him during parts of the songs where in the original versions there was no singing. I WANT to hear Baker's licks at the end of 'Grace Too,' or at the end of 'Three Pistols' and I want to hear Langlois' super cool riffing on the coda to 'Nautical Disaster,' but it is difficult to do so when you have to try to listen to it through Downie's non-stop blabbering about God knows what and who cares anyway.

This is my only criticism.

All in all it's a great DVD but I am thinking the boys gotta maybe rein Gordie in a bit. It seems like it's getting to be a bit too much the 'Gord Downie Show,' at least that's my humble opinion, folks, and no doubt I'll get mugged for it, but that's rock and roll!
