Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Morphine leader Mark Sandman was the inventor of a sound called "low rock" — the distinctive blend of sonorous saxophone, bass and deep grooves that, along with Mark’s lyric poetry, propelled Morphine to fame. But Mark created much more than the brilliant music of Morphine. He was a tireless musical experimenter who wrote and recorded constantly throughout his life. Although Morphine and the seminal swamp-blues quartet Treat Her Right became well known and successful, much of his work was never commercially released and remains unheard — except by his large circle of friends, who he regularly commandeered to critique his latest, usually over a bottle of Patron. Sandbox brings everyone into that circle. After 5 years meticulously culling the large collection of original music, poetry and art left behind by Mark after his untimely death in 1999, the surviving members of Morphine, Bill Conway and Dana Colley, have assembled the essential Mark Sandman collection. More a musical adventure than a "greatest hits" set, the 30 songs on Sandbox are connected by the voice and the singular musical and lyrical vision of Mark Sandman. For Morphine and Treat Her Right devotees, it’s a final affectionate encore. For the uninitiated, an invitation to discover the depth and scope of Mark’s unique and challenging artistry. Sandbox also includes a DVD of rare and unseen footage, artifacts of Mark’s career and even more Sandman music.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal!.......2007-04-11

If you are any sort of fan of Mark Sandman, Morphine or Treat her Right you MUST own this!

5 out of 5 stars If you only knew...........2007-01-28

There is more, so much more. Dana and Billy submitted a 4 CD box set to Ryko over a year ago. Its sitting somewhere, on a shelf. Sandbox is brilliant. Mark was brilliant and continues to shine with every release.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive.......2006-09-14

I loved Morphine and when Mark suddenly died, I was sad to the point where I wanted to go to the memorial concert held up in Cambridge. This collection of work shows what a loss this is. He was truly a very powerful artist and it's obvious he was a constant experimenter. I found a lot of it innovative, funny and moving. I recommend this highly for those people who are seeking to get out of their musical comfort zone and are want highly authentic and eclectic music.

5 out of 5 stars memoir of a madman.......2006-03-04

Sadly, by the time I ever heard of Morphine, Mark Sandman had already past away, dying too young for reasons that I've never seen too clearly (a heart attack? Mark Sandman died of a f***ing heart attack?).
But now, as a tribute to a man who couldn't stop working, couldn't stop playing that fine music, we have this set of two Cds and a DVD. The Cds are wonderful, tracking his recordings and demos from previous bands (Treat Her Right, Hypnosonics, and more) and solo efforts. Every song is packed with a down low blues, dripping with sex.
The DVD is great, mixing live shows with low budget music videos, showing a single and solitary vision that Sandman was only begining to solidify. His interviews are wonderful. He was quiet, direct, and hated doing interviews (at least from what I could tell). Everyone should own this. Do you like Norah Jones? Buy this. Do you like Eric Clapton? Buy this. Pantera? Buy This.
Get the point?

5 out of 5 stars What a perfect package of art..........2005-12-21

..created by Morphine bandmates Billy Conway & Dana Colley and featuring the many musicians who collaborated with the late, great Mark Sandman over the years. If you like Morphine, of course you owe it to yourself to obtain a copy of this CD/DVD, but you already know that. If you are unfamiliar with Mark and Morphine, treat yourself to this artful tribute to a musical great. Sandbox gives the listener a glimpse into the complex art and personality of Mark Sandman through its broad menu of musical experiments, wit & humor, sing-along pop tunes and fluid poetry. The DVD features rare interviews and watercolors by Mark. The fondness of Mark's friends for him and his gifts is the thread that unites the blues-jazz-rock music, visual art and stream-of-consciousness poetry that make up this set assembled from Sandman's vast library of unpublished music after his sudden and tragic death. Hi-n-Dry studios, founded by Sandman, publishes this boxed set and is the best source for it - so get yourself a copy and listen, listen, listen. Then go & write a poem.
