Editorial Reviews

The hooky, upbeat "Walk This World" sounds like a major hit, but it's merely the most accessible side of a feverish, poetic artist who'll be compared more to Sarah McLachlan and Sinead O'Connor than to Sheryl Crowe. Lush melodies abound, but some tracks ("Island," "Sugar") have an intensity worthy of Patti Smith, and there's emotional blood on tracks like "Blue Black." Other highlights on this edgy, affecting debut are "Maybe an Angel" and "Throwing Fire at the Sun." --Jeff Bateman

4 out of 5 stars Great Classic Rock.......2007-04-11

This collection of BOC'S hits are mind blowing. Great Classic Rock cd, that you can listen to over and over again. I love the song Don't Fear the Reaper and my main favorite is track four on the cd.

5 out of 5 stars I had forgotten how good it was.......2007-01-09

This is really something to remember the old rock'n roll times by.

4 out of 5 stars Workshop of the Telescopes Is Better.......2007-01-09

Blue Oyster Cult is a group that nearly has no genre. Much of their early music, only a little of which appears in this compilation, is hard rock with flashes of progressive rock. Most startling are their lyrics, sometimes almost comedic, typically creatively bizarre, and just as frequently so eclectic as to be incomprehensible.

With the success of "Agents of Fortune" Blue Oyster Cult's music changed to a milder rock style, and in some cases, pop. The titles often remain bizarre, such as "Veteran of the Psychic Wars," and the lyrics also remain challenging and unusual, but the music itself is softer.

Consider, for example, "Goin' Through the Motions." This music sounds like something Foreigner might have created rather than the group that created "Harvester of Eyes" and "Flaming Telepaths." Even mellower is "In Thee," which I consider the mellowest song in this collection. This song is romantically beautiful, and somewhat un-Cult.

While I've focused somewhat on the more uncharacteristic songs in this collection, I would be remiss if I did not point out one of the best songs in this collection, "Shooting Shark." This song, from 1983's "Revolution by Night," is somewhat a product of its time, featuring electronics and an early 80s sound, and yet, it contains that spark that has always been at the heart of BOC's best music.

Blue Oyster Cult was formed in 1967, and released an album as recently as 2001. While they were likely strongly influenced by a variety of groups, they have also influenced a variety of musical styles that range from current hard rock to nu-metal or thrash. The length of Blue Oyster Cult's career is barely touched in this sixteen song collection. An even better collection is the two disk compilation "Workshop of the Telescopes," which contains thirty two songs. Once you have listened to that phenomenal collection you may find that you want to purchase Blue Oyster Cult's original albums.

Now comes a question. For sound, buy this CD or "Workshop of the Telescopes"? If you have a high end system and you can readily tell the difference between a remastered CD and the original, and you prefer remastered, then do buy this one. On the other hand, if you have an el cheapo stereo and you can only sometimes tell a remastered CD, then "Workshop of the Telescopes" is a better bet.

Blue Oyster Cult has an array of enjoyable music and this CD gives you a very small sample of that music. If you are unable to find "Workshop of the Telescopes" or you just want a very small flavor of Blue Oyster Cult, then buy this CD. Otherwise, pass this one by for the better options.

1 out of 5 stars Stay Away From All BOC Compilations.......2006-12-10

The problem with any BOC package is they try to combine music from a band the was the coolest group between 1971-74, and a commercial group that produced some of the lamest music I've ever heard. This package only includes 4 songs from their legendary first 3 albums, 11 cuts from their commercial period. If your new to BOC, your have to understand, earlier in their career, they were as good as a hard rock act as there was. They combined top flight muscianship, with cleverly crafted melodies and riffs. The comparasons to Sabbath are only partially accurate in describing their style, because BOC played a more dynamic and colorful range of tunes. In fact, musically, I'd say they had more in common with Deep Purple, particulary in the guitar department. Buck Dharma was simply the most under rated guitar player....ever. Clapton was God, Hendrix was flamboyant, Page was a genius, Blackmore was tempermental, Johnny Winter was an albino, Leslie West was fat, and Buck Dharma, well he just looked like a working-class stiff, but man could that man jam! The rhythm section was propulsive, they played organ when appropriate, and all of the songs had hooks. They were rare then, and they'd be rare today, a hard rock outfit with strong pop sensibilities. So much so, you have to wonder if Eric Bloom and Jeff Lynne aren't the same person? At any rate BOC perfected their attack on Secret Treaties, and rapidly lost their commitment to rock n' roll during Agents fo Fortunes and all albums there after. The other Best of... package to avoid is Workshop of Telescopes. Eventhough it has a better song selection, the songs haven't been remastered and many of the versions are from poorly recorded live and promo albums. Instead of going for a compilation, I strongly recommend purchasing any one of the recently remastered first 3 albums, which sound dramatically better than the originals.

4 out of 5 stars Missing Key Songs..........2006-12-02

Another BOC compilation (aahk!!). Again, missing key songs. This is likely their best compilation because it's remastered, but it's appauling that it's missing some really key songs. I don't know about you, but I always thought these songs would have to be on a BOC best of: "Hot Rails to Hell", "Moon Crazy", "Perfect Water", "Dancin' in the Ruins" and "The Golden Age of Leather". There could be more songs, too. I think it's time that BOC just puts out a mega box set of remastered tunes like Kiss and Judas Priest have.

4 out of 5 stars Poetic Rock.......2007-03-04

Oyster opens with the brooding mid tempo rock number Walk This World, Heal is a tender ballad with lovely acoustic guitar whilst Island is a long passionate rock song with great vocals and evocative imagery. Love ballads like Light Years, Verona and Maybe An Angel are found alongside surges of aggressive rock. Sugar has plenty of tempo variation, starting out slow and atmospheric like a spoken poem, then developing into a full-blown rock number. I like the solemn drums and interesting arrangement of Throwing Fire At The Sun. A highlight of Oyster is the melodic pop song Truth And Bone with its poetic lyrics and hypnotic chorus. The poignant and tuneful Doubled Up In Love that concludes the album is my favorite. Nova seems to prefer complex arrangements where tender balladeering alternates with uptempo, powerful rock sections in many of her songs. Her music reminds me of both Sheryl Crow and Alanis Morissette. The style is an appealing blend of rock and pop and the album contains some exceptional songs.

5 out of 5 stars Her songs hook up with my brain.......2007-02-27

For me, a song that works is like finding a bicycle that is the right size for your chimp. Not everyone has ever trained a chimpanzee to ride a bicycle or picked up the words and chords to a song and found that the words suggest a melody so strongly that there is something internal that is felt exactly at the point on the paper where a chord coincides with one of the words. This is not likely to happen until the brain actually knows the song well enough to make an exterior combination of words and chords into an objective correlative for music that is entirely inside your head, but a chimp on a bicycle only needs to learn to balance and to make the pedals go around to get going.

The perfect example this morning is `Doubled Up,' the last song on the Heather Nova CD `Oyster' that I heard last night. The brain can learn to listen, but once the music is over, the brain tries to complete the experience by repeating the best part to itself, like a kid in Freud's book BEYOND THE PLEASURE PRINCIPLE that demands to hear a story over exactly the same way until the child is exhausted. The kid in Freud's book was obsessed with things that were out of sight. A single servant girl could take care of the kid when his mother was not at home, but his form of play with his toys was all "there" and "gone." I'm not going to explain that game. What is even better is that Heather Nova song:

Big sky above me, a river inside me
and I'm doubled up in love.

Feels good, it feels like poetry,
don't ask me to explain, it just
feels good, like poetry,
I'm doubled up again.

5 out of 5 stars Most Overlooked Masterpiece.......2007-02-10

I give 5 stars if everything on the album is good, plus their are outstanding tracks. This album has at least five rock masterpieces on it and the rest is real good. I've been playing this album frequently now for over 10 years and it sounds as great today as when it first came out.
Walk This World With Me, Island, Throwing Fire At The Sun, and Sugar rank among the best rock music ever produced. A unique strong voice which shows emotional intensity as very few ever have. Some of her songs (like Island) transport you to a safe, soft, dream landscape- and then - the guitars and voice rev up with an intensity that comes raging at you out of nowhere, throws you against the wall, and slaps you in the face. Yea, it gets your attention allright. What an experience! Unfortunately none of her other albums use this technique much if at all. This is the one Heather Nova Album everyone should own. It is a largely overlooked masterpiece that will stand the test of time and fads.

3 out of 5 stars If you like this kind of music..........2007-01-18

I don't really like this kind of music. I saw a picture of her somewhere.

was struck by her beauty and really interesting look. I said to myself,

"Hmmm, let me look this woman up", went to Amazon and was astounded by the

reviews and said What the hell...But the problem is, for me, she just

doesn't stand out from the pack. Besides, I am not into the 'singer

songwriter stuff', so maybe I am not the one to review this. I guess my

local CD store that I sold it to isn't impressed either, as it is sitting

in their $1 bin. You win some and some you lose. Not my kinda thing. Too

tame for me.

5 out of 5 stars One of my all-time favorites........2006-05-23

Upon hearing 'Walk This World' in '95, I ran straight to the music store to find the album for similar songs by the new artist. Over the years, I have found the lyrically meaningful collection of dark, but beautiful songs to be both timeless and priceless. I relate to and empathize with anyone echoing their sentiments. I eagerly awaited Nova's follow-up album, but found it lacking the dark and lyrically weighted material that I love so much on Oyster.

5 out of 5 stars how to become a fan instantly!.......2007-02-28

if you were never familiar with Oyster songs(other than the Reaper) and want to know just what they are this will certainly tell ya what they are! This collection will introduce you quite well to a great band of monstrously hard songs. The rytymn is very strait foreward but good listen'n! I would certainly take tips from the drummer and bass. But the revolutionary part is the gitar work(Bucks) and unlike most gitarists, he plays to play rather than to just motion for rock and show. very bazaar at times and very refreshing. the bass and drums play a part too and the reason I mention this is that most bands(today and recently) don't enfasise anything except what is commonly known in R&R(yes, pun IS quite intended here) and simply go through the motionas and no emphaiss on melody of backing instruments(Steve Howe's own quote is strongly supported in hopes of unimelody comeback, I know of no other terminologgy to discribe it so whateva! anyway a band is music of all supporting roles, not just the highlight gitar solos). that being said, the highlights are what take the cake on an already well-grounded band(no pun intended). if your music is gonna have brains, why not top it with a mein of red hair and a bod(is in a girlie-pie). that came out wrong didn't it but that is what all music is supposed to be.

4 out of 5 stars Great Collection but this is not Remastered..........2006-08-07

Why buy a compilation of of 70's and 80's music, no matter how good, when it has not been remastered? This is an excellent collection of songs, probably the best and most complete reflection of BOC's work, but it is not up to par in terms of sound quality. It is not a remaster and it should be. Buyer beware. I hold back a star for a five star compilation only because it is not a remaster. Check out some more current best of collections like "Don't Fear the Reaper" and you will hear the difference in sound quality, even though, once again, they are not the most complete collections. You might read a review somewhere online that states this is a remaster. It is not.

4 out of 5 stars America's best hard rock band.......2006-02-02

I would almost say "America's Best Heavy Metal Band," but that would not be true for disc two. But in America, only Blue Oyster Cult had the heaviness to rival the overseas likes of Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest or other similarly hued bands of the time. They were also uniquely urbane (hailing from NYC), which meant that they were frequently witty and sarcastic, and far more literate than most bands.

From those first three classic studio albums (and the incredible double document "On Your Feet Or On Your Knees"), you get the first disc. Frankly, it's a blue-print for how to make a "Career of Evil," with such deviant metal anthems like "Cities On Flame With Rock and Roll," aliens come to your house groovers like "Flaming Telepaths" and a summer of love disclaimer called "Tranmaniacon MC" (about Altamont). Blue Oyster Cult flirted with dangerous imagery, SM, and biker mythology, making their lure of the forbidden too much to resist.

It didn't hurt that they also had a white-hot guitarist in "Buck Dharma" Roeser, who's "Buck's Boogie" can be heard here in its firefingered glory. Match that to the general excellence of the players, and you have here a disc of incredible rock and roll.

Ah, but commercial success was in their red and black hearts. Deciding that being heavy and being polished were not mutually exclusive, "Agents Of Fortune" delivered a stunning lightning bolt of maturity....and a top 40 single. Morphing a Byrdsian riff and "Romeo and Juliet" lore into "Don't Fear The Reaper" gave the band their breakthrough and their curse. The platinum success of "Agents Of Fortune" garunteed that the band no longer would ever be in a situation where they would lack the time it took to buff any composition to its highest polish. It follows that, for the second disc, BOC transfomed into an incredible arena rock band of the highest order. "Veteran of The Psychic Wars" indeed!

They did have one more amazing album in them, the dark and lush "Spectres" (Phil Spector pun likely intended). With an incredible sci-fi biker epic backed by a boy's choir, "The Golden Age Of Leather" was a mini-opera that even Queen would be proud of. The BOC was also being exulted enough that the likes of Ian Hunter could be found co-writing songs ("Going Through The Motions"). The band's penchent for tongue-in-cheek lyrics gave them a goofy anthem for the ages in the riff monster, "Godzilla." And who could forget the giant inflatable lizard on the accompaning tour?

Alas, after that, the albums were increasingly spotty. "Mirrors," "Cultosouraus Erectus," and "Fire Of Unknown Origin" all have their moments, and some of them are here. (I would have prefered "Black Blade," but that's just me.) After that, the remaining albums are, frankly, represented by their best single songs. "Shooting Shark" was BOC's second best collaboration with punk-poet-preistess Patti Smith, and "Perfect Water" is, well, perfect.

Disappointments are to be found here as well. The studio cover of "Born to be Wild" can't hold a candle to the live version. Could've had the "Extra-terrestial Live" version of "Roadhouse Blues" here over about any other live cut. And the Cult's last great hurrah, the concept album "Imaginos" is ignored. Still, for the bang-on-the-buck ratio, "Workshop Of The Telescopes" delivers better than any of the single disc comps.

4 out of 5 stars Incredible over-view for the starter!.......2004-11-04

Looks like your one stop place for the beginner here.

The early punk-influencing tracks, and the cream of the mid-period are all here!

"Dancing In The Ruins" and "Perfect Water" are great to get here too,'cuz ya wouldn't wanna buy "Club Ninja" just for those two good tracks and miss the alternate early tracks on disc one here. So,just grab this and use it to guide you thru the BOC catalog. Just skip Club Ninja...really.

A great set covering all the early bases. Looks tasty!

3 out of 5 stars Enough with the compilations already!.......2007-06-03

First, note that I'm not downgrading the music. I'm downgrading another inadequate and ill-concieved compilation.

The reason that so many people are objecting to this latest compilation is that we've gone from the sublime to the ridiculous. In 1995, Sony released the 2-disk "Workshop of the Telescopes" which was a fine (if flawed) overview. It costs a mere $19.98 on Amazon as of this writing, and unlike these inadequate single-CD collections which come out about every six months or so, you get most of the big hits and mid-charting singles along with most of the great album cuts. Alas, even "Telescopes" had its unforgivable omissions, though: "R.U. Ready To Rock", "Black Blade", and "Joan Crawford" were all mysteriously absent. That plain sucked. But you can remedy these oversights by getting the two outstanding albums, "Fire of Unknown Origin" and "Cultosaurus Erectus" in addition to "Workshop of the Telescopes." I know...that's four disks altogether (one 2-cd set and two 1-cd packages) and you were only wanting one disk. But if you care about your music, you'll do it and thank me for it. The missing tracks really are that good and I'm speaking as a casual fan, not a cult Cult fan.

Obviously, if you're considering a hits package, you want the tunes you know. But you also want a damn good sampling of the best material that you may not know. These are the great songs which anyone who grew up on radio stations like WSHE in Miami or the original 96 Rock in Atlanta knew by heart and which would rarely be left out of a live show.

The problem with each of the single-CD collections (like this one) is that they each are missing way too many great songs. It's inexcusable. For example, on "Essential", you get "E.T.I. (Extra Terrestrial Intelligence)" -- which truly is essential -- but then you don't get "Joan Crawford", "Going Through the Motions" or "The Red and the Black", which WERE included on a single-CD compilation released back in 2000, "Don't Fear The Reaper: The Best Of Blue Öyster Cult". However, that compilation of course did not include "E.T.I.", nor several other of their best such as "Stairway to the Stars" -- so unless you just bite the bullet and get "Workshop of the Telescopes", you are going to be missing out on many of their best album cuts and lower-charting singles as well.

Solution: Get "Workshop of the Telescopes", "Fire of Unknown Origin" and "Cultosaurus Erectus." Otherwise, you'll be stuck with just another inadequate compilation, no matter which one you choose. By the way, I am now signing up for therapy to deal with all the confusion created by Sony's multifarious compilations. I'm ready to get out my own "Black Blade" and chop these underperforming compilations into millions of little pieces.

4 out of 5 stars Great collection of clasic hard rock.......2006-11-18

I'm not sure why people are complaining about this Blue Oyster Cult collection. If a band lasts long enough, there are bound to be a few "best of" compilations released. For my tastes, the Essential Blue Oyster Cult works quite well. You get a nice overview of BOC's career, including their biggest hits (Don't Fear) the Reaper and Burnin' for You, digitally remastered sound, and a (sale) price tag that is about half the cost of the average CD.

No matter what songs appear on a "best of" or "greatest hits" package, there's always going to be a track that gets left off that you think is one of the band's better tracks. The Essential BOC does a pretty good job at showcasing the band's best material, and compared to the 30-40 minute 20th Century Masters series, it looks pretty impressive with its 14 tracks clocking in at 70 minutes.

Serious BOC fans will probably have no use for this collection, and that's perfectly OK. This wasn't released with them in mind. It was released for people like me who wanted an affordable way to get a better idea of what BOC has to offer without jumping straight into the band's studio albums. Of course now that I've heard more BOC material than what the classic rock stations typically play, I will most likely be seeking out those studio albums in the near future!

4 out of 5 stars A Good, Not Great, Overview.......2006-11-15

Blue Oyster Cult's sound shifted tremendously over the years, and this set proves that. From their early distorted rock creations, they went on to craft the most amusing progressive songs one could hope to get from a gang of none-too-serious musicians. Later, their sound gives into to the arena rock affectations of the late 70s and early 80s. During this time, they play with the usual Journey/Foreigner/Boston mold by meshing it with abundant acoustics and synths a' plenty.

By the end of these 70 minutes, you really wish you had more music. An essential anthology would've compiled two discs worth of music. As a result, you're better off getting the two-disc compilation that everyone's been raving about. That will give you the same idea as this one, but it'll be presented in a more consistent manner.

3 out of 5 stars Ummm, begging the question...........2006-02-02

But why? Just about all these are on "Don't Fear The Reaper; The Best Of Blue Oyster Cult," (which costs less, I should add) and the double "Workshop Of The Telescopes" fleshes things out even more. But for the price, be aware that you can do much better.

    Album Description

Liner Notes by Richard Meltzer (1981) and Andy Shernoff (1998). All songs recorded live to a two track Dokorder on February 11, 1981 at a night club performance, except bonus tracks, which are from a board tape from a live concert at the Ritz in early '80's. Bonus tracks mastered by Andy Shernoff at Sterling Sound 1998.

On February 11, 1981, John Hanti and I (we were booking the Club 80's on the Upper East Side) traveled with a two track Dokorder to a live Dictators reunion to record the band. Neither of us really knew what we were doing - but the results were fabulous, the band cooked and ROIR cassette A102, The Dictators Live - Fuck 'Em If They Can't Take a Joke was born - and quickly released. It was a big success and helped launch the young ROIR cassette label in the small (then) indie community and, according to Cashbox Magazine (June 1990), helped "elevate the Dictators to mythical status."

So, now we have the original cassette remastered for CD, plus three live bonus tracks selected and mastered by Andy Shernoff from an early '80's performance at the Ritz in NYC.

5 out of 5 stars This is the face of pure rock and roll..........2000-04-24

Yes. Good. Finally this is available with bonus tracks and is on CD and is as good as it ever was. You should buy this. It is good rock and roll, it is live in NY, it is loud and abrasive and melodic and like a sing-a-long at the end of the world. Notable tracks such as "Loyola" and "Search and Destroy" and "Master Race Rock" and "Baby Let's Twist" are completely satisfying on every ostensible level....the stage patter from Handsome Dick Manitoba fulfills and exceeds expectations...for the price, you'd be hard pressed to find an album that better represents a band's energy and sound on stage and makes you just want to get up and dance on a car hood all night long....

4 out of 5 stars Arrogance and hard rock fury.......1998-12-07

A reissue of ROIR's cassette release "Fuck 'Em If They Can't Take a Joke," "The Dictators Live: New York New York," is a welcome addition to your collection if you could never stand the fragile tape-only format. ROIR did reissue it on CD a number of years ago but that edition went quickly out of print. The new version contains three extra tunes from a Dics show at the Ritz in NYC in the early Eighties. I was there and I can tell ya it was a bitchin' performance. The crowd was nuts, desparate for faster and louder guitars and that arrogant Dictators magic. Bags of White Castle burgers were thrown into the crowd. Civilians were booted from the stage. Blood was spilt. Feminists uttered menacing epithets under their breaths. In "Master Race Rock," guitarist Ross the Boss' plexi Marshall peels out right over the face of the listener for three and a half minutes of hard rock fury. In 1998, it whales the tar out of anything current in the heavy metal genre. Killer versions of Mott the Hoople's "The Moon Upstairs" and "The Minnesota Strip" from the "Bloodbrothers" album are also not to be missed. -- Dick Destiny

5 out of 5 stars The perfect British folk-rock album..........2007-07-26

Superb!!! No dark dirges here. Lively collection of songs well played and sung. Inspired choice of material from Richard Thompson, Shane MacGowan, Billy Bragg and even Lou Reed. In terms of spunky tempo, think indeed of the Pogues material. A perfect marriage of a fine multi-talented band applying just the right instruments to each song, and June's earthy singing overlays it all sublimely.

    5 out of 5 stars All tomorow's parties.......2002-10-21

June Tabor is a reclusive British folk singer with a sadly regal voice that evokes world-weariness coupled with inner strength. Her credentials go back to the 70's when she collaborated with Steeleye Span's Maddy Prior on the album Silly Sisters. Through the years she has produced a number of bleak, starkly arranged albums of traditional music such as Aqaba, that made her one of the most important exponents of this musical form in the tiny but dedicated British folk scene. Here she goes popular-modern on interpretations of dramatic material by the likes of Billy Bragg (Valentine's Day Is Over), Richard Thompson (Night Comes In), Shane McGowan (Lullaby of London) and - an inspired choice - Lou Reed's All Tomorrow's Parties. There are three traditional songs, of which Bonnie Sue Cleland is the best, and two songs in a modern folk idiom where fiddle and accordian are used to great effect on a light rock beat. June's rendition of All Tomorrow's Parties is resplendent with spooky fiddle expertly complementing the wistful quality of her voice - reason enough to get this album.

4 out of 5 stars Pleasing mixture of old songs and new, vocals and the band.......2002-10-20

I am new to both June and to the Oyster Band (I don't get around much, I guess...thank goodness for my friend Jim Clark of Missouri who turned me on to both of them.) This is a delightful album. There is another review posted for this one which seems quite sensible to me, so read it. The traditional "Susie Clellan" and the punkish "Lullaby of London" by Shane MaGowan of the Pogues are my favorites, I think...but it's all good.

    5 out of 5 stars a lost gem.......2001-09-18

I am quite surprised to see that this disk is marked "limited availability" and had not been reviewed. This collaboration between June Tabor and the Oyster Band is possibly her most accessible work for those outside the traditionalist ghetto. On it they cover songs by a variety of well-know writers (Lou Reed's "All Tomorrow's Parties," Richard Thompson's "Night Comes In," Billy Bragg's "Valentine's Day is Over," Shane McGowan's "Lullaby of London," et al.) They also perform traditional tunes ("Dives and Lazarus," "Susie Clelland"), and Si Kahn's "Mississippi," probably the least well-known of the covers, is gem.

Unlike some of her other forays into pop music, this one seems to work, presumably because the Oysters are a working band with a distinct approach and sound, and not just a collection of musicians hired for a one-off project. Not everyone will love every one of the covers (I suspect that the breakneck tempo "Night Comes In" will not be everyone's favorite). Nevertheless, this is a very strong collection and I am really surprised by this recording's apparent lack of visibility.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-26

This is such a great collection of 20th century songs, that it behooves me to say something brief about each composer on this disc. I think that by doing so the listener gains more insight and thus more appreciation of all aspects of the song material.

The music of Samuel Barber (1910-1981), whether his symphonies, concertos, operas, chamber music or songs, is notable above all for a pronounced and refined lyricism. Barbr wrote songs thruout his career, and his published vocal output, though relatively small, is perhaps the most distinguished of an American composer. He preferred lyrical , romantic poetry, and his word-setting was perfect.
Stephen Foster (1826-1864) published his first song when he was 18 and by dint of hundreds more became, in the words of Aaron Copland,"our own national hero (who) had a naturalness and sweetness of sentiment that transformed his melodies into the equivalent of folk song." He was truly a songwriter rather than a composer, for he wrote no concert works or operas.
Charles Tomlinson Griffes (1884-1920) assimilated Debussian impressionism and, somewhat later, Oriental exoticism. During his brief career, he composed 64 songs, including four song-cycles.
George Gershwim(1898-1937) began his career in Tin Pan Alley and eventually, with works such as 'Rhapsody in blue' for piano and orchestra and some other works, brought Jazz into the concert hall.
Paul Bowles (1910- ) has long enjoyed celebrity status as an author,a writer of novels, short stories and essays. After a brief study with Aaron Copland, he made a considerable reputation as a composer of incidenal music. Virgil Thompson once described Bowles's songs as "enchanting for their sweetness of mood, their lightness of texture, for in general their way of being wholly alive and right".
Cole Porter (1891-1964) had the rare ability to invent superior catchpenny tunes; deceptively simple, often elegant melodies that stay in the ear. Consequently,he became one of the most successful American songwriter of his era.

As to Samuel Ramey's performance of these songs, one can only say 'business as usual', and that means great sound, great diction, great interpretation and always with that extra something that only a few bassos have!!!!The variety of works is varied and interesting and, if you please, is NOT a cross-over album. There are too many songs that denote the classical element. He was wise enough to vary his selection to avoid that particular situation. I really like this disc!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The greatest American bass.......2007-01-10

Ramey fans will not be disappointed by this charming collection of vocal gems.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but one dimensional.......2000-04-26

Samuel Ramey is undoubtedly one of the finest and most versatile opera singers of his generation. However, these songs do not show his voice off at his best. One of Ramey's main faults is a lack of variety and vocal colour which is ABSOLUTELY needed in a song recital. This lack of colouring means that most of the songs come out sounding the same. The other major concern is that Mr Ramey's vibrato is quite pronounced. Most opera singers can get away with this when singing with an orchestra, but when he just has piano accompaniment it is much more noticeable. Still, it is good to have a recording of some of these lesser known songs and it is still an enjoyable cd.

5 out of 5 stars Primo basso assolutto!!.......1998-11-17

Having attended Mr. Ramey's recent recital in Chicago where he sang a number of the songs on this recording, I can say that there is simply no bass today to rival him for sheer vocal glory. Whether it is the bel canto repetoire, baroque decorations, or as here, the American literature, Ramey is THE bass of the day. Unlike the former days when bassos were relagated to either buffoon, rich uncle, or some other supporting role, Ramey has almost single-handedly elevated the basso to star status. Roles that languished for years because there was no one up to their demands are now staples of Ramey's catalogue. Warren Jones is a sensetive and intelligent accompanist. In fact he played the entire recital from memory.
