After a seven-year absence during which the Norwegian pop trio went off to paint or record solo albums, A-Ha return with Minor Earth Major Sky, their sixth studio album. Recorded in New York over the course of a year, this one is filled with characteristically subtle melodies, sweeping pop production, and a haunting melancholy. Some tracks (like the winsome "Sun Never Shone That Day") border on the bland, but there are songs that have bite--such as the icy, William Orbit-style ballad "Little Black Heart"; the big, blowsy title track; and the satirical "The Company Man," where the band sing frankly of being ripped off by their record label ("Deals fell into our arms / And out of our hands"). There's also a nod to the Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby" in the epic, socially conscious ballad "Mary Ellen Makes the Moment Count." --Lucy O'Brien

Album Details

After several years apart, A-Ha have roared back with their best album ever. The songs are expertly crafted, beautifully performed and yet dark and deeply emotional. Morten Harket's voice is crystal clear and he truly inherits the crown of best tenor in rock from the late Roy Orbison. Outstanding tracks include the title track, 'Summer Moved On,' 'The Sun Never Shone that Day,' 'To Let You Win' and the majestic beauty of 'I Wish I Cared.'

3 out of 5 stars not a detour but not a hit.......2007-06-29

Luis Mejia (son)- Finally, A-ha decides to continue with their classic line up and start with new material. This was the first album I heard from A-ha, and even though I like the album, I also notice that there's something missing. A-ha came up with a new experimentation, a mild experimentation, and I was expecting the old fashioned A-ha, the same that we love. Well, I gotta admit, they thought it well because synthpop and ballads are completely old fashioned and they would never attract a new audience, but even though couldn't they left just one song in an old way?

It's also noticed that they focused more on rock pieces and alternative moods, the guitars of Paul are amazing, and the use of a mild orchestra in almost every song is a new and nice touch. Within the songs the title track, Summer Moved On, The Sun Never Shone That Day and Thought That It Was You are excellent pieces perfect for adaptating for the new rythm of the album, they have moderate guitars, electronic arrengements and as I named before a great instrumentation. The songs To Let You Win, Velvet and You'll Never Get Over Me are songs that could be easily associated with the style of East Of The Sun..., but still experimental. The rest of the tracks are good, but lazy and out of tune.

In conclusion I would say that it's the worst among the best of A-ha's albums, but appreciatable after all.

4 out of 5 stars A-HA Minor Earth Major Sky CD Review.......2007-05-12

This CD is a decent reflection of A-HA's talents, though I would have liked to hear it before buying it. I based my purchase decesion on glowing reviews and was hoping for a little more from the get go, though it does grow on you. No big hits like "Take on Me", and the main reason I bought this CD was for the song "I wish I cared" which is fantastic, and album would get 5 stars if they all followed it's strength.

5 out of 5 stars The best.......2007-03-27

It is the best one so far. I've played it a hundred times. Can't praise it more.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-02-08

There are some really, really good songs on this CD. Even my young daughter likes to listen to it instead of wanting to watch a DVD when we're in the car. Love it!

5 out of 5 stars I was hooked from the start.......2006-09-14

I really think this is better than most of A-ha's older stuff from the 80's. I really wish this would have been a bigger hit in the US, none of these songs ever got any radio playtime where I live.
Don't know why all the good music comes out of Europe, very few good American bands in the last 20 years.
Great stuff, all around wonderful songs. Summer Moved On ranks as one of my all time favorites.

5 out of 5 stars How special?.......2001-06-01

This is an import from WEA Japan. It's apparent that it comes with the maxi-single of "The Sun Never Shone That Day" since I doubt the remixes would be bonus tracks, or could they? I just got the German import free from the record label because I accidentally got a bootleg from the Ukraine. I wanna sell that since I don't need both. Most of the songs are ballads, but they want to stray from the synth-pop they used to do. It still hasn't been released here, but I was told by my website that it should be later this year by Atlantic. Until then, it's worth the extra money.

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps Their Finest Album.......2001-08-28

a-ha. They seem to have come full-circle with this album. The lyrics are wiser, matured with life's experience. I like a-ha quite a bit and I suppose that anyone else who has followed their work will appreciate this album. This album is hardly a product of its time like HUNTING HIGH AND LOW was. HUNTING HIGH AND LOW was very much an 80's album (one of the best) that has transcended that decade and is eternal at least for me. I would call MINOR EARTH MAJOR SKY a product of time. It could only have come about as a result of time and all that implies. Esoteric, perhaps. Listen to `Velvet.' `Velvet' is a whimsical atmospheric piece of sheer beauty. You have to hear it to appreciate this great melodic piece of elegant impressionism. Only a-ha could deliver such a song. Each song on this album is a rare treasure that many of us waited for never really knowing if we were ever to hear from a-ha again. I really had to listen to this album for over a period of a year before I even attempted to write this review. It is hard to put into words what I feel about this album but somehow I think this is their best work.

5 out of 5 stars An underrated but triumphant comeback from the '80s doldrums.......2001-03-04

In this country, a-ha can never seem to escape the one-hit wonder curse of the '80s after "Take On Me" like Kylie Minogue could. This album should prove the critics wrong! The best one ever! I got the title track on the single, which I accidentally confused for the album when I bought that. Even though I finally have this CD, I'm still rallying Warner's U.S. record companies to release it here for other fans' convenience. I first got mine last year through the Z Shop site from the Ukraine. Believe me. You won't be disappointed. It supercedes the U.S. lackluster appeal of "Memorial Beach", which I got out the bargain bin. If you can't wait for a real U.S. release (also for "Lifelines"), you've come to the right place. My first copy is different. It was released somewhere in Eastern Europe, allegedly by BMG and not the usual WEA. I had looked into that. It also had five bonus tracks, one being "Take on Me" as a throwback maybe. Then I was told it was a bootleg, and Ukraine are already facing sanctions for the current music business epidemic. Warner Musik Deutschland sent me the genuine article and I sold the not-so-reasonable fascimile. Danke schoen, Warner!
"Velvet" did see light here on the soundtrack for "One Night at McCool's", but neither that or the move was McCool at the box-office.
Get ready for what we've all been waiting for!

5 out of 5 stars Finally a-ha fans have an album............2000-07-24

the album is totally awesome. Not one bad track on it. I have no fav track because they are all good. I highly recommend this album.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best come-back albums ever.......2000-07-19

A-ha has a gem in Morten Harket whose voice seems to get better with age. The song writing is poignant, lush and perfectly crafted. This is definitely one of my favorite CD's in years.

5 out of 5 stars Great Return.......2000-06-24

4 out of 5 stars Maybe, Maybe.......2001-11-26

I am a big fan of Norways finest musical export aka a-ha. This album is good as it has a wide variety of music appealing to different audiences. However it turns out that each song is remixed 4 or 5 times and you can buy each remix on the album on the singles. However Pal Waaktaar's writing is still class, Magne's keyboard is magic and Morten's voice is still as distinctive as ever.

5 out of 5 stars Minor earth major sky (boxset).......2001-09-23

It is a brilliant compilation of singles comming from the Album Minor earth major sky. Three of the singles were solded sepratly and one was only sold in Norway (to bad) I have no further words for it it is just great you have to buy it!!!

4 out of 5 stars Collector item for fans.......2001-08-02

This box set contains the 4 maxi singles from "Minor Earth Major Sky" album.

"Summer Moved On" is a beautiful ballad showcasing a-ha melody skills and Morten's inimitable voice. The Millenia Nova mix is aerial and extremely laid back. The radio version is slightly shorter. "Barely Hanging On" is another album track. The original maxi single was released separately with the same content.

"Minor Earth Major Sky" remixes are sometimes redundant, but Millenia Nova once again does a good job with an atmospheric version of the song, which sounds even more melancholic. I personally like the rock edge of the Black Dog remix and find the early version interesting. I'm not much into the dance remixes from ATB (rather poor according to me) and Ian Pooley, but I guess they will work out well in clubs. This edition contents the poetic video for "Summer Moved On" (Quick Time) (not on the independant original single release).

"Velvet" is a tender and sexy love ballad. My favorite remix remains the atmospheric one by Millenia Nova. De-Phazz remix includes some electronic loops and voice distortion. New York City mix is close to the original but pushes instruments and the female vocals in the back. Morten's voice sounds clearer. Alabaster mix uses the guitar loops as a backbone. Stockholm mix sounds too mechanical to me. Just like for the original release, the video is included (Quick Time). This video is related to "One night at McCools" with Liv Tyler (the song was part of the movie soundtrack).

"The sun never shone that day" is a beatlesque song, which works out well in the summer. The non-album tracks are two more remixes of "Minor Earth Major Sky" otherwise only available on vinyl, probably the best dance remixes of that song. "Pumpin' doll remix" is really working out well and Ian Pooley is more inspired on this "toothache mix". The cinematic video for "Minor earth Major Sky" (Quick time) showing Morten abandoned on the moon by Magne and Paul is included. This maxi-single is not available independently from this box set.

If you're a collector fan, and did not have the occasion to purchase the singles separately, the box set is a good choice. The artwork is matching the cover of the album, and it will be a good-looking addition to your collection. If you're new to a-ha, I advise you to listen to their album(s) first. The dance remixes are not representative of the band style.

5 out of 5 stars Just So Rich and Melodic.......2002-11-16

The inimitable sound of a-ha is so evident on "Minor Earth Major Sky". I like it when you get a fistful of re-mixes of a song that you just love. Initially this song reminded me of their output from the EAST OF THE SUN WEST OF THE MOON album but with a greater rock sound behind it. The Millenia Nova mix has a very ethereal and gossamer esoteric feel to it. It just lifts you away. I liked the Black Dog re-mix. It gently rocks. The album version is my favorite. The early version has a raw quality behind it, which I also like. The two dance mixes just don't fit this song. "Minor Earth Major Sky" is just so rich and melodic.

4 out of 5 stars a-ha is back!.......2001-11-01

One of the greatest 80's band is back, and stronger than ever. Listen to Morten Harket's voice again is worth it. Here in Brazil, a-ha was a major hit and it will get on the road again with this new album!

5 out of 5 stars Sounds like the old a-ha.......2000-11-17

`Minor Earth Major Sky' is great and sounds like a throwback to the a-ha of the 80s. You get seven cuts of this song and you can see how the melody stands up to whatever category you want to pocket this song into. That's what makes a-ha so good. This is their best song since `The Sun Always Shines On TV.' Morten Harket's unique voice is back, a little raspier but a little wiser! Get the whole album!

3 out of 5 stars Silverside.......2000-11-15

"Minor earth / major sky", the title track from a-ha's lastest album, is one of a-ha's strongest songs to date, offering an appealing blend of mid-tempo dance rhythms and ominous guitar riffs. This EP is a nice supplement to the album, featuring seven remixes and alternative versions of "ME/MS" which span a little over 35 minutes, so it's quite good value for money. First, we have the somewhat redundant 4-minute radio mix. Black Dog's mix (by the way, this obscure band has nothing to do with the trio which has released several great techno albums on the famous Warp label), however, marks a more aggressive stance and features an interesting mix of acoustic and electric guitar textures. If there's any other a-ha song which resembles this in terms of atmosphere and melody, it would be "The blood that moves the body". Millenia Nova's romantic remix of "ME/MS" is the obvious highlight of this CD-single, it outclasses the original with crystalline guitar playing, soaring synth sounds, wonderful melodies, and unexpected sonic trickery. The lyrics are reduced to the refrain, and although the music seems a bit laid-back at the beginning, it becomes much more energetic towards the end of the song. Unfortunately, the typical dancefloor takes mostly do little to inspire. The inclusion of Ian Pooley's "Deep mix" seems pointless (and perhaps only to fill out the disc), but ATB's "Club remix" does provide some sparks, mixing straightforward dance rhythms with strong keyboard chords and more echoed vocals. The 5-minute "Early version" sounds more like a demo recording and shifts the focus to the keyboard arrangement, yet has an unfinished and patchy feel. Finally, we have the 5 1/2-minute album version, the second-best track on this disc. Of course, being a remix EP, the quality is overall variable and the pop-tinged reworkings here tend to be superior. There are one or two songs on this disc you really don't need, but "ME/MS" still manages to be a pretty good and enjoyable release.

4 out of 5 stars Minor Earth Major Versions.......2000-09-01

To tell you the truth I am a fan, but on the other hand I don't like Cd singels that have 7 versions on a disc from one song. This is what I found here. One tale in seven versions. is it amy good? Yep! This band has rediscovered its music and fashioned to the new millennium. My favourite is version number 3 which resembles to Blur whit its dark tone. The version made by ATB the famous german "techno band" is first but later it has a really good base and sounds well in the car. All in all it is a Cd worth buying, but only if you are a fan and open to new style by your favourite bend.
