Aside from a multimedia pastiche he did for England's millennium celebration, this soundtrack for Philip Noyce's film marks Peter Gabriel's first full slate of original recordings in nearly a decade. In the meantime, Gabriel's globally ambitious Real World musical mini-empire has taken precedence; the knowledge the musician gleaned there is immediately apparent in his film cues here. While the booming electro-tribal rhythms of previous Gabriel work come instantly into play, there's a sense of spacious mystery that's perfectly emblematic of the story's Australian outback setting. Gabriel's penchant for dense aural construction gives way to an ambient soundscape punctuated by Aboriginal percussion, didgeridoo, and bird song, and occasionally washed over by lolling tides of synth and samples. It's an atmosphere that, like the Aboriginal world it evokes, is nearly devoid of traditional melody, but one infused with a gripping, almost subliminal power. "Cloudless" then brings in haunting indigenous voices as well, intertwining them with a wordless, Westernized choral to emphasize Gabriel's compelling world music vision. --Jerry McCulley

Album Details

'the Rabbit-proof Fence' is an Australian Film by Peter Noyce. When Peter Gabriel Heard About Rabbit-proof Fence He was Intrigued. Not Only was it an Independent Film (Not Your Usual Hollywood Blockbuster), but the Film Had a Great Story with Little Dialogue in which the Music Would Take a Significant Role in Setting the Mood So He was Keen to Be Involved.

If you are expecting a Peter Gabriel Rock album, stay away from this CD.
Forget all the hits you already know from PG. and listen to this great Soundtrack.
Inspired by field recordings collected in areas as diverse as the Senegal, Egypt, Turkey and other places, Long Walk Home achieves a cumulative effect of all Gabriel's fascination with world music, delivering fantastic fusion of ancient and modern sounds ultimately transcends both geography and time.
As far as I am concerned, this is Gabriel's best film work, deserving a serious consideration, as his finest music of any kind.
This is one of my favorite Soundtrack music in my collection.
Other Great soundtrack CD:

The Thin Red Line.

4 out of 5 stars Once again, Gabriel shines.......2006-07-05

Gabriel's future works will always be compared to 1989's "LAST TEMPTATION...." and this one clearly stands close. "Gracie's Recapture," "The Return," and "Running..." were remixed together for the first movie preview of Gibson's "THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST" and would probably serve as a better score to that movie (no offense to Debney) than to this one. Still, Gabriel's score does work for this film, though only a handfull of tracks will be listened to repeatedly.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for Rabbit Proof Fence.......2006-02-01

This is one of my most favourite scores of all time, and I own over 400 movie scores. What Peter Gabriel has done here as a composer is infuse a film with a vibrancy and heart breaking power that it wouldn't have had otherwise. It's such a mature and wonderful piece of work, one has to wonder why Gabriel doesn't compose more films.
Rabbit Proof Fence has been labelled as pointless background music by some. Hogwash. Yes, there are a few stretches on this album that are meant to be quiet, unobtrusive moments of background underscore, but to label this score as such is denying it of the power this CD contains. There are moments in this score, like Running to the Rain, Gracie's Rapture, and The Return that are so beautiful, so stunning, so tragic, so uplifting (this isn't a contradiction - you'll understand when you hear it yourself) that it's impossible to express it's greatness in words. And then the two songs at the end, Sky Blue Reprise and Cloudless, take you up to heights that few pieces of music can.
Gabriel here proves that he's more than a great singer/songwriter, as he did with Passion and to a lesser extent, Birdy; he's also one of the strongest film composers out there. This is truly one of the best CD's I own. To listen to it is a spiritual experience for me as the music picks up and soars to beautiful heights. I'm serious. This is wonderful stuff. Pick it up as soon as you can. I promise you won't be sorry.
cheers

4 out of 5 stars interesting connections.......2005-12-21

One thing I found particularly interesting is this:
Peter Gabriel did the soundtrack to Martin Scorsese's 1989 film "The Last Temptation of Christ", which was of course entitled, "Passion".

Is it just coincidence, then, that "Running to the Rain", one of the best songs on "Long Walk Home", obviously also by Peter Gabriel, was clearly used as the main theme to advertise the theatrical television trailers of Mel Gibson's recent film "The Passion"? Am I the only one who noticed this at the time??

Also, while watching "The Passion" in the theater, I was absolutely convinced that Peter Gabriel had done the soundtrack to that film as well, since it sounded so startlingly similar to both "Long Walk Home" and "Passion". seems there was quite a lot of "borrowing" going on with John Debney's composing methods and inspirations... hmm..

anyway, this is a great album. very contemplative and spacious. not as fast paced or rhythmic as Passion, but fits the atmosphere and theme of "Rabbit Proof Fence" quite well.

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece.......2004-09-15

First heard elements of this composition on the pre-marketed "Passion of the Christ" trailer released by Icon Films in late 2003, prior to Newmarket sponsorship.
The music in many of these tracks will bring one to tears, and musically there are fewer more talented than Peter Gabriel. His skill beams thru in this pensive, dark, and triumphant film score. A must-have for those who appreciate modern classics.

4 out of 5 stars Mr. Gabriels New Masterpiece.......2006-10-13

I really enjoyed this score. It captures mood and feeling and I really love that. The score to a movie should make us "feel" what is happening. This one does that and more. It is always an added bonus when I listen to a soundtrack and it plays the movie over in my head. Peter Gabriel is awesome at doing that. I would suggest this for anyone who is moved by film music, but especially to those who believe that the soundtrack tells its own secret version of a story only known by the composer and your imagination.

5 out of 5 stars Layers and layers of sound..........2006-01-17

Gabriel doesn't disappoint his fans or anyone else who is willing to step into the circle where his music can be heard. Almost two years after "OVO" PG offered yet another score. He had previously done an outstanding work -his best in my opinion- with "Passion," the music to the Scorcese movie "The Last Temptation of Christ" and "Birdy" the soundtrack to the movie of the same name, directed by Alan Parker. The music to "Rabbit Proof Fence" is, like its predecessors, a highly charged ethnic album, where Gabriel blends influences from several corners of the world, including this time also samples from aboriginal Australian tribes in the closing tracks.

The album is packed with layers and layers of sound, but the two most remarkable moments in it are, without any doubt, "Running To The Rain" (whose theme is repeated throughout the album) and the three-part track "The Return," both of which promise to give you Gabriel's "shiver," that same sensation you felt when you "experienced" songs such as "It Is Accomplished," "Bread and Wine" (Passion) and "Wallflower" (Security) in the past. Long story short: buy it. True PG fans cannot afford to miss this work and casual PG listeners will get a kick of it.

5 out of 5 stars Love to Love Peter.......2002-09-18

Peter Gabriel is an all around incredible man who makes delicate, yet somehow very intense music so it seems redundant to state that this album contains inspiring, beautiful music. If you are a lover of the greater pleasures in life, pick this CD up and chill.

5 out of 5 stars If You Love Peter's "Passion"...........2002-05-17

"Rabbit Proof Fence" is the new Australian film by Philip Noyce, telling the true story of three aboriginal girls who are kidnapped from their home in order to be sold as slave workers. But the three girls escape, and must travel alongside a 1500 mile-long "rabbit proof" fence that stretches across the Australian outback in order to get home. Peter Gabriel's new soundtrack album for the film, appropriately titled "The Long Walk Home," is a beautiful instrumental album that picks up where his classic previous instrumental album, "Passion: Music From The Last Temptation Of Christ," left off. This is a mostly quieter soundtrack album than "Passion," but it's no less powerful. Gabriel infuses traditional Australian musical elements to the soundtrack's aural soundscapes, such as didgeridoo and tribal chant. He plays various keyboards, and also pitches in on background vocals for a couple of tracks. Credit must also be given to guest artists The Blind Boys Of Alabama, who contribute memorable, haunting vocals to the equally-haunting tracks, "Ngankarrparni," & "Cloudless."While the long wait continues for the new "proper" solo album from Gabriel--10 years now--"The Long Walk Home: Music From The Rabbit Proof Fence" is another incredible, essential "stop-gap" Peter Gabriel album to add to your collection, the other being the import-only "OVO" from 2000. Filled with an amazing lushness & atmosphere, "The Long Walk Home," like "OVO," should succeed in holding you over until the new Gabriel album is *finally* released later this year. Seriously, has this brilliant man ever recorded a bad disc? Not to my ears. :-)

5 out of 5 stars A soundtrack that stands on its own........2002-05-14

Peter Gabriel has long been a favorite artist of mine. He has been consistently willing to innovate in ways that are both highly successful and still accessible to the mass market. Each album seems to have broken new ground in some fashion but never were the ties to previous efforts lost!

    His soundtracks are similar.

The first soundtrack, Birdy, borrowed heavily from previous work, yet mixed it together to achieve a highly evocative, sometimes frighteningly dark/intense, soundtrack that works just as well as a solo piece of music.

His second sountrack, Passion, is an absolute masterpiece. While continuing the artful and often complex instrumental soundscapes omnipresent throughout his work, Gabriel added music from the indigenous artists of the film's setting. The end result is breathtaking. I dare anyone to sit down and listen to Passion through a good stereo out a decent volume in a dark room without becoming completely absorbed in the music. A masterpiece.

Rabbit Proof Fence / Long Walk Home continues in this tradition. The music is often dark and of a more Gabriel-esque instrumental nature as that found on Birdy. However, the album is rife with material performed by various Australian musicians.

Excellent stuff. Stands on its own. Every PG fan should own it and a lot of folks not familiar with his work will likely find this to be a good entry point.

    3 out of 5 stars Four and a Half Lunar Cycles...That Long?.......2002-05-03

While I was initially enthused about the idea of PG creating another film score, I have to admit my disappointment in this project. Unlike his previous efforts Birdy and Passion, where the music stands on its own as an album, Long Walk Home lacks a great deal in musicality. The songs bear more of a semblance to traditional film scores, i.e. short clips of music that fade in and out. The songs here, while they have great potential, are never fully developed in the way the tracks for Passion are. They give one the impression that they have been edited down from their original form. The musical motif's are too repetitive and over-used, blending all the songs into one long composition which, although interesting in their cohesiveness, detract from the uniqueness of each song.

The most disheartening aspect of this album is the obvious recycling of "The Nest That Sailed the Sky" from OvO to construct "A Sense of Home". Similar to Birdy in that respect, one would hope that after nearly ten years of inactivity PG would have more tracks lying around to work with.

There are some very bright spots on the album, including "Moodoo's Secret" and "Ngankarrparni" featuring guest vocals from The Blind Boys of Alabama. It was also very touching to see that PG incorporated a vocal performance from the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. But overall the songs on this album sound like outtakes from Passion. A rather disappointing follow-up to the remarkable OvO album(s) one can only hope that it suggests PG was putting most of his effort into UP, which we all hope will come out on its projected September release date. It is definitely haunting though, and entices the listener to go out and see the film.

4 out of 5 stars another soundtrack triumph for gabriel.......2002-04-23

Peter Gabriel's film scores are evocative, richly produced, and always give the listener (and film viewer) a sense of place and history, rather than just layering on some symphonic score meant to jar a viewer's emotions one way or the other. His latest effort, Rabbit Proof Fence (an Australian film from director Philip Noyce scheduled to hit the U.S. this summer) is every bit as rhythmic, sensuous, and disturbing as his scores for Birdy and The Last Temptation of Christ (released in CD as Passion). Again, Gabriel has assembled a vast array of world musicians (many Real World artists) who take the stage for an amazing tapestry of sounds; including his long-time collaborator David Rhodes, a soulful appearance by the Blind Boys of Alabama, and interweaving the haunting didgeradoo music of Ganga Giri. This, like Gabriel's other film work, stands very much on its own; though hearing it makes me very anxious to see what must be a provocative, emotionally resonant film. Not quite as powerful as Passion, but another solid scoring triumph from Gabriel.
