Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars CD.......2007-03-30

This is a fairly unknown band from the 70's. Rock and roll with a different sound than the usual bands from that era. Would highly recommend listening to it.

5 out of 5 stars Good stuff not dated.........2007-02-20

I know nothing about the second paradise island album but i did own the vinyl versions of lake, and lake 2 and very much enjoyed them. The signatured self titled "Lake" was their best and it was solid rock-pop with some prog elements. The kansas comparison doesn't wash because kansas played much harder and was also a better prog band. That's why kansas was so great.

If we had to place an identity for this sound as far as comparing them to something many people would know it would be styx. The pre mr roboto styx anyway. The music is tight free flowing with nice vocal harmonies and solid musicianship. Lake was the album we would pull out when we wanted something different from our typical prog lineup. Something a little easier to listen to.

Lake never hit the big time because they were not able to manufacture any big top 40 hits in america. There is little controversial or ground breaking about the music and the lyrics are not dark and disturbing. That's why i like them. It's pop but not sell out crap and the music is just as fresh today.

And yes as others have said, this is a german band that has nothing to do with greg lake or ELP.. If you really like this check out star castle an illinois band that did very similar music.

I don't think that Lake received a lot of US airplay when they were in their heyday, but K-SHE 95 in St. Louis played them a fair amount, and they were in concert in St. Louis in '79 or '80, I think. Germany was the home of Lake, and they were fairly popular over there.

This CD combines Lake's first commercial release in the US (Lake) with "Paradise Lake", so you really get a double-barrel shot of some of the best music that Lake produced (if you were to get "Lake 2" as well as "Ouch", you'd nicely complete all of their best stuff).

For those who are new to Lake or not sure if they have heard them or not, Lake is not to be confused with Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Lake has a somewhat older Styx-like sound, combining progressive rock with bluesy classic rock. "Between The Lines" is an awesome prog-rock track, a long song with a classical instrumental interlude using guitars, keyboards and synthesizers.

If you were to get a first taste of Lake, this would be a very good pick. Some of their best music is on this double CD, and I can't think of a song I don't like out of all 16 tracks...and for a decent price!

5 out of 5 stars Great Grandma likes Lake too........2006-09-04

I had the priviledge of raising eight kids in St. Louis from the late 60's to the early 80's. So, it stands to reason that I was exposed to a lot of 70's rock. I came to appreciate Santana, Elton, Kansas, The Little River Band, Jefferson Airplain/Starship, etc etc. It wasn't, however, until 2000 that I heard Lake. I was visiting my adult daughter in Charleston, and she was playing her version of nostalgia and Lake was included. WOW! I love the harmonies and especially the lyrics. Unlike a previous reviewer, my favorite is "Jesus Came Down". Not weak, but a timeless comentary on what's going on globally. Don't know if this group is still kickin', but if I ever get my act together and write a screenplay that's buzzing around in my head, Lake will be the music to underscroe the message. I'm old as dirt, but I know good music when I hear it (any genre). If anybody has the lyrics to "Jesus . . .", I'd sure like a copy. Haven't been able to track them down just yet. Love and Smiles.

3 out of 5 stars Great musicianship, but WAY dated.........2006-04-02

1977 was a time in my life when just about all things were wonderful. I was (honorably!) released from the Army in April, and that set the tone for the rest of the year. I began my 15-year "career" in insurance, my girlfriend favored Kate Jackson (upon whom, I STILL have a crush!), and my band began its asendency toward being the top Atlanta "party" band. I'm babbling, yes, but all that, sort of, sets up the tone of my "take" on "Lake" (sorry...I apologize for the rhyme there): I distinctly remember driving to a gig, pleasantly stoned, in August, listening to one of Atlanta's nascent "FM-album rock" stations. Just as I pulled up to our drummer's house, that marvelous synthesizer-clavinet riff that intros "On The Run" began, and I was literally stultified for the three-plus minutes it played. The next day, after work and still nursing a vicious hangover from the evening before, I purchased "Lake." And, again, "On The Run" transfixed me. The rest of the album, though, was PURE LATE SEVENTIES: "wee-wee-diddly-diddly-lead" guitar, shrieking high pitched lead vocals, excessive synthesizers, and the drummer must've been using 2 bass drums, the single-stroke rolls being so...well, "excessive." Still, I bought the ticket and I took the ride - and I still can't believe how happy I was last year, when I discovered "Lake" was now avilable on CD. Buy this CD, folks, it's a very pleasant time-warp - and, NO, Kent, I am NOT going to sully this "review" with a gratuitous comparison to (blgh) "Kansas" - although I do grudgingly have to admit that "Lake" DID sound sort of like a...European version of "Kansas."
