Garcia, his revered 1972 solo debut, exclusively features cowrites by Jerry, Dead percussionist Bill Kreutzmann, and famed Dead lyricist Robert Hunter, including "Sugaree," "To Lay Me Down," and "The Wheel." Now expanded with eight previously unreleased outtakes from the original sessions, including "Study for Eep Hour" and a "Dealin' From the Bottom" studio jam.

An aptly named album if ever there was one, Not for Kids Only combines the talents of two legendary performers, the late Jerry Garcia, singer-guitarist of the Grateful Dead, and David Grisman, mandolinist and father of "dawg music," a melding of bluegrass, jazz, swing, Latin, and Jewish klezmer sounds. On this 1993 recording, the two devoted friends make seemingly effortless music, adapting traditional and old-time folk into a personalized sound so "homemade" (with jew's-harp and tambourine) as to inspire any child, young or old, to pick up whatever's at hand to play along. From the jaunty rhythms of "Jenny Jenkins" to the cornball humor of "Arkansas Traveler" and the laugh-out-loud lyrics of "A Horse Named Bill" ("I had a girl and her name was Daisy / And when she sang the cat went crazy"), this album, with Garcia's delightful hand-drawn cover art, tickles from top to bottom. --Alanna NashCustomer Reviews:

Short-lived and with only a limited output, this five-piece bluegrass band nevertheless helped spread the gospel of this extraordinary genre via the famous coattails of its most notorious member: Jerry Garcia. However, they were no novelty act. Breakdown is the second posthumous release culled from a series of 1973 concerts in San Francisco. At a robust 70 minutes, the album flows like a complete live set, featuring scrumptious musicianship and harmonious camaraderie. Much better than the eponymous debut from 1975--and a perfect second volume companion to 1996's equally worthy That High Lonesome Sound--Breakdown features covers of greats Bill Monroe and Flatt & Scruggs, originals by the band's guitarist Peter Rowan, fiddler Vassar Clements and banjoist Garcia. A must own for any fan of acoustic music and a great primer for bluegrass neophytes. --Greg EmmanuelCustomer Reviews:

Real Bluegrass But With An Innovative Approach.......2006-01-20
Among the traditional songs, I especially liked the patriotic "Down Where The River Bends" and the old gospel tune "Drifting Too Far From The Shore". It's ironic because the lyrics of these songs are so different from my personal experience and yet they manage to move me deeply. It's funny how music can do that to you. In any case, this is a fine album and I recommend it highly to both straight-up bluegrass lovers and rock fans drawn to it by Jerry Garcia. Good stuff!

I'm not trying to disparage Garcia's playing--he definitely holds it together, and considering his G.D. history, I was surprised by his abilities.
The group excells at making the songs accessible, both in the choice of songs and in the playing.
Some particularly enjoyable songs:
Kissimmee Kid (Clements and Grisman shine)
Wild Horses
Midnight Moonlight
The Hobo Song
Buy this album immediately. It's certainly worth it; when I first bought it, it didn't leave my car stereo for about 2 weeks.

Throughout his life, Jerry Garcia had an abiding fondness for the banjo, bluegrass, and roots-folk music. It not only helped shape the Grateful Dead's vast repertoire, but also led him on various musical excursions outside of the Dead. One of his most consistent collaborators in his extra-Dead adventures was "newgrass" mandolin master and bandleader David Grisman. The two of them formed the nucleus of the short-lived but influential bluegrass ensemble Old & In the Way in the early 1970s. These 13 delightful folk songs were culled from numerous laid-back Garcia-Grisman sessions that took place in Grisman's studio between 1990 and 1995, often joined by Joe Craven on fiddle and percussion and Jim Kerwin on bass. Garcia and Grisman pulled these songs--some of them quite obscure--from a variety of American eras and genres. Included is a vivid rendition of Mississippi John Hurt's "Louis Collins," as well as folk odes like "Casey Jones," "Whiskey in the Jar," and "The Handsome Cabin Boy." Throughout, the resulting music is mellow and evocative, likely to appeal to both neo-folkies and open-minded Deadheads. --Bob AllenCustomer Reviews:

Pure Brilliance.......2006-02-22
Now - when I say blown away - I mean it. Literaly. Blown away, to me, means having to sit back and re-think everything you thought you knew about music and discovering a whole new genre, a new approach. Discovering you like something else. That's blown away, as far as I'm concerned. And this album definately blew the hell out of me.
I remember hearing it for the first time, on some early morning train ride, that went through the sun, through the rain, and back to sun light again. From that first string pluck to that very last "truly obnoxious instrument" monolog, I was simply amazed. I never thought I'd like country music, or anything related to it, for that matter.
And the whole atmosphere of the album - so relaxed, so free, so "we're here just for the fun of it. really" kind of feeling. I've only heard that feeling come out of one other album - "Traveling Wilburys Volume 1". The only thing David and Jerry wanted to get/achieve in these recordings was the shere pleasue of hearing each other play together, and the excitement of what the music may do while they play.
If you're a dead head, you'll probably get this album anyway. If you're not, if you only have a couple (or less) "dead" albums, then pick this one up. You're exactly where I was when i pressed that "play" button.

Gentle background music with lots of harp.......2005-06-26
While 'classical purists' may raise their brow because of the many flute/harp selections (citing that Bach never composed any music for the harp), the person buying this CD for inspiring and relaxing mood music should be be delighted just fine with these "transcriptions" from piano to harp. The harp has a special niche for creating the most serene of atmospheres which it does not fail to do here. The solo Suite in E-flat was originally composed for solo violin but sounds much more smooth and dreamy on the harp - a piece very well done. However, some pieces are so serene that you might fall asleep at the breakfast table - hence, the sub-title "A leisurely way to start your day." Actually, it could easily be titled, "Bach for Bedtime" as the selections are all pretty relaxed and on the quiet side. So, if the hyper-energy of Mozart symphonies is too much for your mornings or if the sharp surges of Beethoven's music unsettle you, then these calmer Bach selections should be a better way to ease into the day.
If you like the flavor of Baroque music, "Bach for Book Lovers" in the same series is a good choice and has more solo piano selections for the piano lover. "Bach for Bedtime" is also a wonderful (non-duplicating) collection of some of Bach's most serene music and is also recommended. Perhaps the most calming and sedating music in this Philip's series is "Baroque for Bathtime" which can easily put you to sleep - in a good way - with or without the bath. All are high quality with well-selected pieces from the treasures of classical music's most influential composer of the Baroque era - Johann Sebastian Bach.
Excellent Compilation of Brilliant Music for Home Listening.......2004-01-26
The "songs" on this CD and from the series were chosen from the vast and excellent Phillips classical music catalog. The sound, performances, and song selections are world-class.
A lot of great classical music is great for an evening at the concert hall but not very good for listening at home. The crescendos can be loud and the themes too intense. I would rather listen to a breathtaking Mozart piano sonata (solo piano) at home than a grand Mozart symphony (large orchestra) at home. The music on this CD was chosen for home listening, such as when reading a book.
This music appeals to everyone. Classic musicians may snub this music because it's not grand like a full-blown opera. They ignore the fact that the great composers, like Bach recognized different musical genres such as chamber music for at home or the kings court, and grand symphonies for an evening at the concert hall.
The music on this CD is EXCELLENT for listening at home. It's both brilliant and mellow. When I listen to this music I marvel at the brilliance of Bach. I am very grateful for this music and other CD's in this series.
A fantastic CD!

If the Grateful Dead was Garcia's day job, then his beloved Jerry Garcia Band was his robe and slippers. Without the "scene" swirling quite as much around the JGB, those shows took on a more informal, laid-back feel that was clearly liberating to Garcia, who with the JGB had the freedom to completely indulge his own tastes. The JGB of Garcia's last decade boasted terrific organist Melvin Seals as Garcia's chief improvisational sidekick, plus the background female soul singers Gloria Jones and Jackie LaBranch and Garcia's old buddy John Kahn on bass. Recorded in 1990 at San Francisco's Warfield Theater--which was nothing short of the JGB's home field--this double-disc set gives a clear idea of the ensemble's breadth: Dylan covers, Motown hits, and blues romps, as well as classic rock, gospel, and reggae numbers, and basically any song that Garcia loved. Of course, there's plenty of solo space provided to Garcia's spiraling guitar, but his passionate vocals on the ballads are also quite moving. The single-disc How Sweet It Is was recorded during the same stretch and is equally as impressive. --Marc GreilsamerCustomer Reviews:
good stuff, but far from the best JGB recording.......2007-05-07
Some great tracks.......2007-04-25
There are some great tracks on this CD. Garcia and the band are at the best when they do long, enegetic, flowing tunes, like Dear Prudence and Don't Let Go. Dear Prudence is the Beatles tune and is done in that long jam style of the late sizties. It just moves and flows in a marvelous way.
Don't Let Go is a 1950's R&B tune that Jerry Garcia has been playing since 1976 in the various incarnations of the Jerry Garcia Band. By the time this album was released, he had been playing the song for 15 years and has really fine tuned it into a 17 minute masterpiece.
The one Grateful Dead tune the band does in Deal. Even though the Dead has done this song much better, this version of Deal is still very good, with a blistering guitar solo.
As for the rest of the songs on the album, they are all covers of other peoples music. In most cases, the originals are better than Garcia's (except for the nice Garcia solo thrown in here and there).
For instance, Garcia's version of the Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, isn't as good at The Band's original version, or the two live versions the Band has out on record. Garcia's version of Los Lobos' Evangaline is especially weak. I would rather hear the Los Lobos version any day. It is played with much more energy and is much more interesting. And, I still prefer Peter Tosh's version of Stop That Train.
Dylan and Dead just don't go together. I don't know why, but 2 of the most important artists in rock history just do not meld. The Dylan and Dead live album is just a horrible mess. And here, Garcia does not do justice to the 4 Dylan songs he plays. The only one that comes off decent is Tangled Up In Blue. But that song from early in Dylan's career is so good, it is almost impossible to mess up.
I know people are going to be mad at me (at mark my review as "not helpful") for saying some derogatory things about Garcia. There are some excellent tracks on this set, but it shouldn't be ignored that there are some songs that aren't as good as the original versions by the original artists, and at times they can be a little boring and tedious.
This CD is currently out of print (in 2007), but I think a new "special edition" will be available soon.

A gift from Ol' Saint Jerry.......2006-10-04
The Grateful Dead were a unique and special thing, but by the eighties, it had grown too large, taken on a life of its own. Too many people were making too much money, and too many lives depended on the touring. So, on inertia and psychedelic fumes, the band played on. And the kids, they dance and shake their bones. But Jerry Garcia's heart was not in it. There were sporadic great shows, nights where all the individual streams came together just right and the magic happened. But you had to listen to a lot of mediocre jamming to get to those moments. You had to accept that you were there for the experience, and the band was there to provide the accompaniment. Any higher expectations and it was a set-up.
When you listen to the Jerry Garcia Band, you can hear the difference. Not that there still weren't off nights. But freed of the burden of the Dead, the Dead scene and the Dead repertoire, the alchemical magic was bubbling through the music. Jerry could take a melody and make it something different, something special. The ensemble he put together in the late eighties and early nineties played some great, soulful and beautiful music, and this compilation is a nice example of the best of it.
Melvin Seals is terrific on the organ and Kahn does a good job on the bass. You also get quality background singing, something noticeably missing from the Grateful Dead since the band cleared puberty. The Way You Do the Things You Do, Dear Prudence, Deal, My Sisters and Brothers, and an exuberant Tangled Up In Blue are my personal favorites. There are also plenty of those slow, sad ballads that Jerry does so well.
Buy this, listen to it often, have fun, be safe.

Album Description
The Grateful Deads's revered Jerry Garcia pursued an eclectic array of side projects throughout his life. While he always remained central to the Dead's sound and mythology, his other acclaimed musical incarnations included the Jerry Garcia Band-both acoustic and electric configurations-the short-lived, jazz flavored Legion of Mary, solo outings featuring Merl Saunders, and bluegrass supergroup Old and In The Way. On his own and with the Dead (who toured with Dylan), Garcia's interpretations of the "Zimmerman" canon are rich musical masterpieces that embody the very soul of American roots music. This newly compiled 2-disc set celebrates many of the best of those memorable performances.Customer Reviews:
THERE ARE SOME OUTSTANDING COVERS HERE...........2007-01-27
Here it is done well. Here I can't complain that the album gets stale as it plays out like I could with Postcards... (I think the main reason with Postcards is that most of the cuts are Bob Weir singing really lengthy Bob Dylan tunes and Bob Weir just shouldn't sing that much. I mean, I've seen him do a few Dylan covers well in in concert, but stacked on top of each other they get old fast)
Jerry handles Dylan much nicer, and in fact, the tunes performed with Jerry Garcia Band are much better then songs he performed with the Dead.. (perhaps Dylan and The Dead just don't mesh as well as it seems like they should).
In point... I think that SHE BELONGS TO ME is the same version from Postcards, and that may have been the one stand out track from that disc, so right away it should be easy to just forget about it and put your eggs into this basket.
The bulk are from The JGC and are easily the highlights...my personal top three are TOUGH MAMA, WICKED MESSENGER and TALES OF YANKEE POWER although pretty much everything is worth listening to. They don't seem like a waste of time, it feels like there is emotion to these takes, and the band bring it a life of their own. That is essentially why this disc is good, and Postcards isn't.
Here new life is added to Dylan songs, there its like a karaoke show, and you wish you just had the real Dylan cuts.
Here is a disc thats worth listening to, whether you are a fan of Dylan or Jerry or The Dead or all of the above... there is some great stuff on here.
Nice.......2006-04-08
Dylan play some Garcia.......2006-01-25
Sound quality is generally very good considering the time periods. Highlights include a scorching Tough Mama, a surreal Knockin' on Heaven's Door (Donna wails well in this one folks), Simple Twist of Fate & I Shall Be Released are excellent, there is no other option, Tangled Up In Blue includes some mind boggling guitar work. The album closes with a nice take on It's All Over Now Baby Blue circa 1990 Dead. These are just highlights to me mind you (there are more I'm sure); the rest of the disk is great as well. The only glitch may be the 13-minute Masterpiece where Jerry butchers the lyrics (not in a forgetful sense, in a tonal sense. However, the guitar work is typical jaw dropping Jerry). Wicked Messenger wears me a little thin as well.
Overall a great compilation of work played by one of the greatest musicians (and his cast of friends) ever, interpreting one of the greatest songwriters ever, now that's hard to beat.

After nearly dying in 1986, Jerry Garcia not only spiritually revived the Grateful Dead but also rekindled his love for acoustic music. To that end, in 1989 he recorded Almost Acoustic with his 1960s Palo Alto folkie pals and also began collaborating with his longtime friend and mandolin master David Grisman. This 1991 set offers a brilliant assortment of acoustic music that ranges from bluegrass-inspired stomps to B.B. King covers, age-old folk songs, standards by Irving Berlin and Hoagy Carmichael, and an exotic album-ending modal-jazz journey. The playing is stellar throughout, but the mood is warm and welcoming as well. --Marc GreilsamerCustomer Reviews:

Lovely addition to any music collection!.......2006-01-13
Jerry Garcia, legendary leader of the now defunct Grateful Dead, teams with the less widely known (but supremely talented) David Grisman for 58:28 minutes of sublime music sure to soothe substance seeking listeners.
This collection of songs includes a cover of the BB King classic 'The Thrill is Gone' and an amazing reworking of the Dead's beloved 'Friend of the Devil'. Also especially noteworthy is 'Russian Lullaby' and 'Dawg's Waltz', which showcases Grisman's ability to make the mandolin sing. The traditional rendition of `Walkin' Boss' is so exceptionally authentic that one can practically see the mist rising off the
Appalachian Mountains. Even the ample 16:25 minutes of 'Arabia' doesn't feel unnecessarily long.
This album would be a delightful addition to any music lovers collection, but particularly those interested in acoustic music. It has also been a welcome break from more traditional lullaby collections and works like a charm to lull my four children (ages 5, 4, 3 & 1) off to dreamland. A rare find indeed - something complex enough for adults yet dulcet enough for slumbering kids.

public radio station, and I was blown away. I had to have it, but
was worried the rest of the album would not be as good. Not to
worry, a fantastic album throughout. "Russian Lullaby" is catchy,
"The Thrill is Gone" is done so you forget B.B. King, "Arabia" the
last song on the album is 16:25 long, and not a second too long.
If it helps to know where I'm coming from, I'm a fan of acoustic
music and have been learning the mandolin myself. This album is
more for the acoustic music fan; I can't speak for the deadheads.
This duo is hot.......2005-03-29
One of the first I would re-buy . . ........2004-01-10
The musicianship, of course, is excellent. It's difficult to chose a stand-out, but both Garcia's and Grisman's solos in "Friend of the Devil" are literally other-worldly.
In short, a must.

Cornucopia of Pavarotti's works.......2007-03-01
Disc 1 features estimable works such as "Nessun dorma" (well done, with his voice showing to good effect), "Che gelida manina" (excellently done, with good characterization), ""Celeste Aida" (elegantly sung), "Di quella pira" (a much better than average version), "E lucevan le stelle" (Pavarotti does a nice job in the Puccini-Verdi repertoire), "La donna e mobile" (sung with aplomb), "Recondita armonia" (the other aria from Tosca, which also shows Pavarotti's voice off to good effect), and so on.
Disc 2 is especially interesting, because it features a more popular set of works, from the redoubtable "O sole mio" (richly orchestrated and nicely sung, not overpowered by Pavarotti's operatic voice), "Core n'grato" (compare with Caruso's version), "Oh, holy night," "La danza" (spritely sung with excellent breath control in a treacherous song), "Santa Lucia" (again, smoothly sung), "Ave Maria" (seemingly sung with respect and affection).
A cornucopia of Pavarottiana. For those fans of Pavarotti, this "greatest hits" collection will be welcome. For those who may not be aware of this tenor when his voice was still fresh, this is a fine entrée to his work.

Great Tenor - Poor CD Quality.......2004-10-11
I particularily enjoy the first disc which contains just about all the major tenor arias. The singing is superb and listening to this CD it becomes obvious what the fuss over the pre-3 Tenors Pavarotti was all about - the man really did have one of the greatest tenor voices of all time.
His diction was flawless, his line perfect and his interpretation in keeping with the greatest of the Italian tenors of days gone by.
The second disc is interesting in that it is a bit uneven. It contains a few neapolitan standards, a x-mas song, a duet with Frank Sinatra and some other random selections.
Overall this is a 5 star CD but due to the extremely low volume, particularily on the first and most important disc I can only give it a 4 star rating.
On a final note, anyone puzzeled by the current hype over the now againg and commercially over-blown Pavarotti should purchase this CD. This is the great tenor in his prime and as such a CD well worth having...even if you're not a Pavarotti fan.
I'm still not, but I recognize greatness when I hear it.
Great Music......Horrible Mastering.......2004-07-24
The song choices are good with the exception of "My Way" with Frank Sinatra. Both singers sound ....ummm...let's just say less than their best on the recording. It sits out like a boil on a pretty girl's face.

Album Description
Garcia, his revered 1972 solo debut, exclusively features cowrites by Jerry, Dead percussionist Bill Kreutzmann, and famed Dead lyricist Robert Hunter, including "Sugaree," "To Lay Me Down," and "The Wheel." Now expanded with eight previously unreleased outtakes from the original sessions, including "Study for Eep Hour" and a "Dealin' From the Bottom" studio jam.Customer Reviews:

Classic 70's Gem.......2006-08-07
I must admit at first listen I didnt really enjoy The Grateful Dead's "American Beauty", but after "Garcia" my whole view of the Dead has completely changed. This terrific gem of an album is only one member's attempt, put them together and you get a tight band who knows which notes to pick.
I can even see now how the Dead have paved the way for many of the southern rockers like Lynyrd Skynyrd and so on with their song themes and style.I learnt all these things from my listen to "Garcia" by the late great Jerry Garcia and I learning more.
Get this now if you like great music!

A Brilliant Yet Dirty Gem Of An Album..........2006-05-20
This album features 6 songs that were assimilated into the Dead's Live Reportoire.
"Deal" and "Loser" are songs very relative to those on "American Beauty" and "Workingman's Dead", which deals with people living the hard life, in this case, gamblers.
"Bird Song", a tribute to Janis Joplin, is filled with a smattering with guitars and organ that just echo a certain pain that Garcia must've felt.
"Sugaree" is somewhat based on an old folk tune with similar titles. This song probably has the sparsest arrangement on the album, with only acoustic guitar, bass, drums, and electric guitar fed into a Leslie Speaker.
"To Lay Me Down" is subliminal in it's subject matter. It could be about lost love, or the death of the 60's dream, choose your own interpretation.
"The Wheel" however feels like a solution to the pain and suffering presented throughout the other songs. But the solution could be different for everybody.
The other songs on the album are little snippets of electronic sound experiments that bridge between the 2 sides of the album.
"Late For Supper" and "Spidergawd" work well as an introduction to "Eep Hour". "Eep Hour" being an instrumental "song" on the album, it works well as transition back to Earth for "To Lay Me Down", but for some strange reason, there's no bass in the song. The only bottom end one hears is Kruetzmann's bass drum, but it's just not enough? How come there isn't any bass, did Garcia ever get asked about it and have a good answer for it? 'Cause I'd Like To Know.
"An Odd Little Place" also works well as an intro to "The Wheel", but there isn't much besides that.
I'm so happy I bought this CD!.......2006-04-02

Chances are, the most devoted fans of these three musicians have heard these tunes before, thanks to the crafty pizza-delivery boy who filched the tapes from Garcia's kitchen soon after they were recorded in 1993. That said, the warm, intimate performances here are very much worth an official CD release. The sessions came about when Tony Rice was in Northern California to record the delightful duet-collection Tone Poems with David Grisman. Garcia stopped by to hang out and jam with his old buddy Grisman and with Rice, one of his guitar idols. The disc retains all of the joy and spontaneity you'd expect from such an informal setting--Grisman even elected to leave in the between-song banter, which mostly consists of genuine overflowing mutual praise. The music itself, primarily traditional folk songs, is quite engaging thanks to Garcia's affecting, soulful, pained vocals and to the picking of all three. The contrast in flat-picking-guitar styles makes for an interesting combination: while Rice is technically superb, marvelously quick, and of remarkably clarion tone, Garcia is much more emotional and visceral, feeling his way along. There are a handful of exploratory, off-the-cuff jams that add to the impulsive nature of the whole project. Had the threesome actually intended this to be released, it probably wouldn't have the appeal it does, for this is the product of friends and music lovers, not recording artists. --Marc GreilsamerCustomer Reviews:

What becomes a legend most.......2006-12-24
I've been a Dead aficionado (most people probably wouldn't describe me as a "deadhead") for the last 20 years or so. During that time, I've amassed close to 100 of their recordings, official and bootlegs. I've also perused Jerry's solo works, and by and large, can't say anything has really gripped me as much as his work with the Dead.
There are two exceptions to that: The pizza tapes and Shady Grove. Both were recorded very shortly before Jerry passed on to the big Dead concert in the sky, and both are just incredibly beautiful documents of his bluegrass/banjo/mountain picking roots.
These two recordings are absolutely essential for anyone who has been captivated by the incredible treasure that is Jerry Garcia and the Dead.

Enjoy this tasty acoustic treat... It's HOT!!.......2006-03-06
By the way, I love the cover art... the CD case is made to resemble a pizza box. Open it up and the disc is a pizza pie with all the toppings. On the back is a menu of all the treats including some spicy items (choice words from Garcia!)
I actually get the craving for pizza when I'm listening to the album. The PIZZA TAPES sure is one tasty album. Great music and great pizza, what a winning combination!!
a view from the studio.......2005-12-21
By the way, if you're new to the Acoustic Disc label, note that they often bury a little surprise at the end of their CD's. It won't be listed on the menu of tunes or mentioned in the liner notes. It's usually a little snippet or out-take, and it's always a treat. You can't even find it with the "fast forward" button; you have to wait for the last song to end, then there will be a rather long pause and then the trailer will start playing. So, don't be in such a rush to remove the CD from the player; there might be more to come.
