Time may judge this the worst kind of Led Zep mimicry, but on first listen it generates real excitement. Never mind that Coverdale is a third-rate Robert Plant (particularly as a lyricist). It's enough that the drums do the Stegosaurus stomp, and Page is more in touch with his muse than at any time since Physical Graffiti. "Shake My Tree" is the standout. --Jeff Bateman

4 out of 5 stars Swinging CD.......2007-05-14

Page's guitar is smoking hot on this CD.
It's Plant's loss that he wouldn't get together with Page at this time.

4 out of 5 stars A Guilty Pleasure.......2007-04-19

I'm not sure why so many people, myself included, consider this album a guilty pleasure. Maybe it's because prior to its release, there were so many Whitesnake/Led Zeppelin (Coverdale/Plant) comparisons over the years, that something like this seems almost taboo. Plus, I recall reading that both Robert Plant and Jimmy Page were very critical of Adrian Vandenburg's liberal "borrowing" of Jimmy Page's violin bow and guitar technique for the "Still of the Night" video. So it was a surprise to see David Coverdale and Jimmy Page get together.

Upon first hearing of this pairing, the assumption was that we'd be treated to Led Zeppelin-Lite, so there defintely reservations about what the final product would sound like. Would David Coverdale try to emulate Robert Plant? Did Jimmy Page still have the guitar chops to make a relevant album?

The answer is yes. And as some other reviewers have stated, this is some of the best material Page has put out since leaving Led Zeppelin. It makes me wish Plant and Page picked up where this album left off when they reunited for the somewhat disappointing "Unledded" album.

Had Coverdale/Page been a Plant, Page, and Jones project, it would have made a much bigger splash on the music scene. Instead, this great album seemed to fly under the radar and fade away. There was a tour of Japan, but to my knowledge, no tour of the States. And that's a shame, because it would have been a treat to see these two in concert.

The stand-out songs for me are "Easy Does It," "Shake My Tree," and "It's Over Now," but I truly enjoy the album as a whole.

If you're a Led Zeppelin fan looking for a fix, don't feel guilty -- pick it up and give it a try.

5 out of 5 stars These guys should get back together if Plant is to busy.......2007-02-10

Hell these two guys should get back together and make albums and tour. I only like Coverdale in Deep Purple and the Coverdale/Page powerhouse, I hate whitesnake. Come on page give Coverdale or Plant a call again!

5 out of 5 stars LED ZEPPELIN AT ITS' BEST.......2007-01-20

I just re-discovered this album recently after trunging through my Zeppelin collection. What i discovered, even after listening to the Page/Plant reunion stuff, is that Page is probably better off without the current incarnation of Robert Plant. This CD sounds like vintage new Zeppelin- it could have been a new Zeppelin album if not for the absence of one fickle Robert Plant to do this project when Page wanted to and the rest of the band. It's such a shame that the other Zep members can't reunite- considering the fact that all but one - John Bonham- and his son sounds so much like him- and that Zeppelin is #2 in the world for rock album sales. But if all other rock bands succeeded on without original members, then I'm sure the inclusion of fellow of pure Anglo-Saxon metalist Coverdale wouldn't tarnish the Zep reunion dream at all. Rock on Page and Coverdale!!

3 out of 5 stars Fury Among Triteness.......2006-11-14

Heh, this album gets a mixed reaction. Some see Coverdale as a Robert Plant clone. At times, that seems to be the case. Then again, Jimmy sometimes seems to be copping Zeppelin material (one track resembles a portion of "In My Time of Dying" and another has a synth that suspiciously acts like "Kashmir" every now and then). But don't let this fool you. As far as rock albums go, this is a pretty decent example of one. Sometimes the drums are too loud (something I hate in 80s rock). Sometimes there are interminable power ballads that just bore you to do death. Perfectly typical in rock albums. Fine. But then, sometimes, chemistry happens and you get some fan-freakin'-tastic rock and roll. The hammer of the gods, albeit somewhat rusty, still has the potential to bring forth a most righteous smackdown on the unbelievers.

Hightlights include: "Shake my Tree," "Feeling Hot" (this track is practically G'n'R) and "Absolution Blues."

I'd suggest that if you like Zeppelin, Whitesnake and late-80s rock, you should get this eventually; sure, there's sap and prototypical hair-metal wankery that's devoid of real flavour, but the golden moments more than make up for it.

I love all records of David Coverdale, this is the second after he Join a group called Whitesnake, this cd is not a classical hard rock album, if you want an album like burn or ready and willing, this is not the cd for you!

5 out of 5 stars Little Heard But Excellent .......2006-08-17

I've loved this album since I first heard it some 20 years ago. Coverdale's voice never sounded better than on this album -- if all you've ever heard of him is from Whitesnake's metal days, this will surprise you. But then again if you're only into Whitesnake's metal days, you probably won't like this album. It's more indicative of earlier, bluesy Whitesnake but - for my money - better than anything they did. Great stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Coverdale's second and best solo release of the seventies.......2005-08-08

Northwinds (1977.) David Coverdale's second album.

INTRODUCTION:
1976 was the year that saw the disbanding of one of the greatest hard rock bands in the world, the classic Deep Purple. Every member of the band went off in a separate direction. Tommy Bolin, Ritchie Blackmore's guitar replacement who only lasted for a single album, died shortly after the breakup due to his drug overdose. On the other hand, David Coverdale, the young man who had become Ian Gillan's replacement at age twenty-one, decided to try his hand at making a solo album. Producing his debut solo effort would be none other than Roger Glover, a fellow former Deep Purple member (although Coverdale and bassist Glover never played together in Purple.) Although Glover's days in Deep Purple were at an end, he was now pursuing his other interest of producing artists. Before 1976 was over, the White Snake album was complete (Whitesnake would later become the name of a Coverdale-fronted power rock supergroup.) Following the release of that album in early 1977, Coverdale released his second solo album, Northwinds. Neither album gained any real popularity. But is the latter still a good album? Read on if you want to find out!

OVERVIEW/REVIEW:
David Coverdale's solo albums are pretty much unknown, which is a shame, since the two of them are very good. They are really NOTHING like the Deep Purple or Whitesnake (the band) that Coverdale fans know and love, but their uniqueness is one of their greatest strength. Northwinds demonstrates this beautifully. Fusing his classic Deep Purple rock sound with elements of blues, pop rock, and even funk, he creates one of the most unique-sounding albums he has ever played on. It's a tough sound to describe, and one that's really hard to put into words. This album is an improvement over the first Coverdale solo album, with songs that feature more energy and creativity than the songs on that album. Coverdale's voice sounds just as fresh as it did on the Deep Purple albums that came before. And although the album that preceeded this one was called White Snake, this solo material really sounds NOTHING like the band David Coverdale would later front that would feature that name. Most fans of his go straight from the Deep Purple albums to the Whitesnake band albums, and bypass these forgotten gems. If you're a fan of his, make sure you don't make the mistake so many of your peers have made! Hard rock, blues rock, pop rock, and even the occasional funk elements meet in perfect harmony on the Northwinds album. Dave doesn't fail to please his fans here. Between the two Coverdale solo albums from 1977, I have to give the nod to Northwinds.

EDITION NOTES:
This album has been out of print for years, but it was recently reissued and made more readily available. The new issue features expanded liner notes, plus some rare bonus tracks. There is also an import version of the album that combines this album and its follow-up, Northwinds. If you can find the twofer for a good price, it's the version I recommend. Otherwise, the onefer reissues with the bonus tracks will work out fine. Either version might be kind of tough to find, though.

OVERALL:
Deep Purple is wildly popular and damn good. Whitesnake is wildly popular and damn good. David Coverdale's solo work is damn good, but practically unknown!? Why!? This is one of Dave's finest works, too. If you're a fan of his, and you want to see a relatively unknown and unique side to him that is often overlooked, don't hesitate to check out his long-forgotten solo albums. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with them.

5 out of 5 stars Honesty, Integrity and BULLET PROOF!!!.......2005-06-19

Northwinds is probably THE most profound recording of DC's career. Funky, rocking, blusey, and introspective. Every song is incredible. The song styles vary, he's all over the place and he pulls it off! The 2 bonus tracks are worth the price alone as one reviewer stated...this is essential Coverdale...not the tacky dumbed down hair metal clown he became in '87 (and may still be today). If you're a fan of the solo works of Tommy Bolin and Glen Hughes, Rainbow (Dio years) and DC's Deep Purple through '84 Whitesnake this will blow you away. Definitely a recommended cd.

5 out of 5 stars Beware Rdc54..........2003-10-28

I ordered this CD because David Coverdale has a wonderful voice and writes good, straight ahead Rock tunes. I was, unfortunately ripped-off by this Rdc54 guy...as were many others. People who try to sell with no E-mail available should be stopped by Amazon.com!!! Buy the Cd, but not from that turkey!!

5 out of 5 stars The birth of the snake.......2002-11-26

David Coverdale's first effort after Deep Purple reveals his affection for Blues, Rythm and Blues, ballads and Hard Rock.
Some songs might take a while to be completly accepted such as Goldies Place or Peace lovin' man, true r'n'b/soul tracks, others like Whitesnake or Lady could have been recorded during the Stormbringer sessions.
Two major and irresistable ballads- Blindman and Hole in the sky-contrast with the fun-spirited Celebration or Time on My side. All that together forms a cool steady very optimistic album.
Extra bonus: Simon Philips on the drums and Roger Glover at the production.Slowly the snake is crawling...beware of the Snakebite!

3 out of 5 stars ABOVE ALL.......2001-12-19

Despite weak production efforts, this album made clear that David had the capacity to go on his own after Deep Purple. It has the bluesy feel all over it, it has master drummer Simon Phillips, along with Micky Moody, which would follow DAvid for a long period of time. I enjoy the album, even considering its flaws.

3 out of 5 stars 1st solo album.......2001-02-15

Made in UK in 2000, Serial# 5075-2, Playing Time 48:10

This is DC's first solo album, originally released back in 1976, after the break-up of DEEP PURPLE's Mark IV formation.

The album contains quite an eclectic collection of material, plus 2 bonus tracks that are the "1st take" of songs featured on the album.

Coverdale's got a distinctive voice, and a very bluesy way of singing. Interesting to note that the album was produced by Roger Glover, bassist for Deep Purple Mark II, considering he and David never played in PURPLE together, even though DC collaborated on Glover's "The Butterfly Ball" album.

The music on the CD ranges greatly in styles, including female back-up singers and horn arrangements. Quite a step away from DP's genre. Though the performances are "adequate", I find the arrangements rather bland, and some melodies (Lady, Blindman) are much stronger than others (Goldies Place, Peace Lovin' Man). The bonus tracks consist of the 1st take of 2 songs on the album, and include guitar cues, band warm-ups, and very basic arrangements, almost like a run-through of the songs just to get the "feel" for it.

This album (as well as it's follow-up) is for the true fan: it shows DC's versatility in interpretation, but seems to have been made quickly and on a low budget.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars sorry David! your latest solo cd is a bit weak.......2006-07-24

coverdale's latest solo cd is musically a little bit weaker than his glory days with Deep Purple and Whitesnake. the hardrock diva seems to have a tiredness in 2000 and produced almost 65% only sappy ballad songs such as dont ya cry, she gives me, too many tears, midnight blue and the weakest track on the album
wherever ya may go. the other tacks such as into the light, the river song , living on love and cry for love are strongly returning to the tradition of hardrock.

his latest solo cd has to be seen: it has musically nothing to do with the old coverdale's immense original power of hardrock, which he wrote with deep purple or whitesnake for 34 years ago, at the time he wrote about the mythology, legend, social critic as a main topic in his many solid hits with deep purple and whitesnake.

5 out of 5 stars David lights up my life!.......2006-02-27

David Coverdale has by far one of the best sounds in music history! His powerful voice and deep felt lyrics make this a CD the best I have heard in a long time. With so many fly by night artists out there, David Coverdale should be a staple in everyone's musical library.
Well worth your money regardless of what the price is! It is a shame this CD didn't get much air play when it was released.
Truly a masterpiece!

5 out of 5 stars Awsome CD by Coverdale and Company.......2006-02-16

I own 2 of these CD'S and I have to say it's one of the most phenominal CD'S that I have ever heard.. David Coverdale has a beautiful voice to begin with, with Deep Purple and Whitesnake.. This solo CD has put David Coverdale way over the top.. My favourite song on the CD is "LOVE IS BLIND".. The acoustic guitars that represent most of the CD is Unbelievable.. Doug Bossi and Earl Slick as well as the rest of the band have put their heart and soul into this..If you are a huge Whitesnake fan buy this CD or purchase 2 copies like I have.. It is a "MUST HAVE" !!!!! ROCK ON !!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Back to his roots...and he's still got a great voice.......2005-06-24

This album sounds a lot like Coverdale's pre-Whitesnake solo efforts, and like early Whitesnake, but with a more modern sound. In fact, it sounds similar to the final Whitesnake album, "Restless Heart", which...sounds a lot like Coverdale's early solo work and early Whitesnake. For those who did not like Whitesnake's turn to glam in the late '80's, this album is a welcome return to Coverdale's roots.

Speaking of "Restless Heart", this album contains another version of "Too Many Tears", which was originally released on that album. Coverdale prefers this version. There are some great tracks here, including "River Song", "Love Is Blind", and album closer "Wherever You May Go". The album also *sounds* great -- very good production.

Highly recommended for fans of David Coverdale and early Whitesnake.

4 out of 5 stars Still a Great Voice.......2004-05-23

A very pleasant album and while I found the songs varying from mediocre to terrific, Coverdale's voice sounds as strong and accurate as it ever has. "Love is Blind" and "Slave" are fantastic with the latter being as hard a rocker as anything he's done in his Whitesnake/Purple past. Coverdale fans won't be disappointed.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2007-06-16

Awesome effort by David Coverdale and Jimmy Page. All the tracks are excellent, no weak songs or throw aways! If you like Whitesnake and/or Led Zeppelin you'll like this album. My only complaint is that there wasn't a part two!

5 out of 5 stars Timeless Rock from Rock Giants.......2007-05-31

This album from two of rock's greatest giants has been around for a while now but to call it simply classic rock would be to do it a great injustice. The whiskey and tobacco weathered vocals of David Coverdale masterfully blended with the gut-wrenching guitars of Jimmy Page (and lots of lush strings) thrill from the start.
There is not a single weak track on this album; from the large and loud opening 'Shake My Tree' to the epic close with 'Whisper A Prayer For The Dying'.
Other highlights include the anthemic duo of 'Take Me For A Little While' and 'Take A Look At Yourself'.
This is one for the open road when the sun is shining.

4 out of 5 stars Searing Guitar Work, Focused Vocals.......2007-04-11

Easily this disk is the best post-Zeppelin performance by Page after Live at the Greek. Coverdale puts in the best vocal performance of his career that makes the Slide It In sound rather tame by comparision. Page burns on this disk, Denny C. is an animal on drums. This just needed some better song writing as it is uneven in spots. Too bad John Paul Jones did not do the arranging.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing album.......2007-02-11

Best album thus far since Zeppelin, Page shines on this effort. I hope after hearing this Robert Plant reconsiders Pages offer and joins him for a reunion.

4 out of 5 stars hey I have it on vinyl.......2003-10-01

I still have this edition on vinyl featured Purple guys like Coverdale, Glenn Hughes, Glover, Lord. The recording was made in an alcoholic consume. many purple fans love it, this rare edition is a MUST for all purple fans.

2 out of 5 stars Expanded Edition.......2001-06-18

Made in USA in 2001, Serial# BIG-4045-2, Playing Time 114:50

Originally released on Christmas Eve 1976, perhaps to inspire "last-minute-shoppers", this Eddie Hardin (of SPENCER DAVIS GROUP fame) was more or less following in the footsteps of Roger Glover's (of DEEP PURPLE fame) project entitled "The Butterfly Ball" of a few years prior. Though once again trying to combine the various talents of multiple rock performers (like David Coverdale, Glenn Hughes, Mike D'Abo, Mo Foster, Roger Glover, Ray Fenwick to name a few...), WIZARD'S CONVENTION was a commercial flop.

The original release contained 10 tracks (up to "Swanks & Swells"), and was generally depressing and bland.

It was issued on CD in 1994 (Repertoire REP-4474-WY) and included 6 extra tracks, courtesy of Eddie Hardin himself, which were recorded during those sessions. There were probably only 2 copies sold in Canada (the first one I bought was defective!)

This latest version, now on 2 discs, includes a full disc of previously unreleased stuff, not to be confused with "Wizard's Convention 2".

Considering the talent involved, this set is, well, banal. Most of the melodies are soft and depressing. Overall, the performances are dull and lazy, though I must say that some of the vocal performances are quite good.

It's not a masterpiece, and IMHO, it's simply ordinary and weak. However, it's an item for the archives, because of the multiple people that participated on it.

4 out of 5 stars good musical direction.......2000-02-25

good musical direction! I love that! Coverdale sang one song, Hughes sang one song, Lord played jazz rock and Glover played Bass,...a must for Deep Purple Fan,.....Eddy Hardin is agood pianist...

4 out of 5 stars You have got to give this a listen!.......2000-09-03

David Coverdale's second solo album is an unexpected gem!!! Produced by Roger Glover (Deep Purple) songs like "Keep On Giving Me Love" and "Breakdown" (My favorite) demonstrate the continuing passion and emotion that Coverdale exhibited with Deep Purple and continued on in Whitesnake. Check out songs "Northwinds" and "Only My Soul" showing that Coverdale is a master of the lighter, rythym and blues style in addition to the harder hitting anthems that he is known for. Fans of Deep Purple and Whitesnake, this album is a must! Not only does this recording make a great companion to his first solo album, it completes it.
