It's not McCartney's most musically accomplished album, but CHOBA B CCCP--that's "Back in the USSR" to you and me--is a loose and loopy bit of rock & roll nostalgia that's at least as much fun to listen to as it was to make. Originally intended as a cold-war-busting Soviet Union-only release, popular demand finally brought it to Western ears, and it's a good thing it did. McCartney was always the Beatles' best Little Richard-inspired shouter, and this album allowed him to revisit those days on covers of "Kansas City," "Lucille," "Ain't That a Shame," and "Crackin' Up," among others. Most of the tracks sound like first takes, but that's in keeping with the vintage material, which was originally recorded in much the same way. Who says they no longer make 'em like they used to? --Daniel Durchholz

Great Set of Rock'N'Roll Oldies by Paul McCartney.......2006-08-12
A worthwhile effort that falls short.......2006-05-01
Some of the selections like "Kansas City" and "That's Alright Mama" were staples of the Beatles Hamburg and early Beatlemania live shows.
Most of the songs are uptempo rockers, with a slow song or two for change of pace. Paul's vocals are generally good. He sings with a lot of power and emotion but some of the tunes are not well suited to his voice (he was 46 when the album was recorded.)
The energy and spirit are there but the sound isn't. All the tunes have something of a late 80's feel to them, with heavy, modern-sounding riffs and solos. Notwithstanding the overuse of echo, the production is almost too clean. Most of us know these songs from old LPs which were cut from low-quality master tapes made with fairly primitive (50's) recording equipment. It's not clear what instruments were played by Paul and his band but they sound "modern," or at least not like instruments from the period. This album would have been much better had it been recorded in a small studio - perhaps it was - with vintage guitars, amplifiers and mics. The guitarwork, particularly the solos, should have been played closer to the original style/structure. Sure, some "updating" of these old standards would have worked but Paul and the band tipped the scale a little too much to the side of modern/updated vs. classic/traditional. To see how this album should have been made, check out Brian Setzer's tribute to the early Sun Records recordings, Rockabilly Riot Vol. 1.
Whatever its shortcomings, it's still a decent little album, especially if you like early rock and roll or you're a fan of Paul's solo work. He has certainly made worse albums (Press to Play for starters.) He has also made a better album of covers of the favorites from his youth, Run Devil Run.
