From a postmodern perspective, it's entirely fitting for the Rutles, the Beatles spoof band started by Eric Idle (Monty Python) and Neil Innes (Bonzo Dog Band) in 1978, to come back in the mid-'90s. After all, the Beatles did with Anthology, the albums and the documentary. Hence the new Rutles release, Archaeology. But as Spinal Tap proved with its 1992 comeback album, the joke is never as funny the second time around. In any event, the 16 songs on Archaeology are smartly written, deftly recorded, spot-on parodies of the Beatles tunes we hear daily in elevators and dentists' offices. You knew they would be. "Major Happy's Up and Coming Once Upon A Good Time Band" takes on "Sgt. Pepper's," of course, and segues neatly into "Rendezvous," in which the Rutles' drummer is none too happy to get a little help from his friends. "Joe Public" lovingly skewers "Tomorrow Never Knows," as well as the concept of mass-market merchandising, while the single and video "Shangri-La" mix "Magical Mystery Tour" and "All You Need Is Love." But towards the end, the Rutles are running so short on material that they're parodying solo Ringo ("Easy Listening") and Wings ("Eine Kleine Middle Klasse Musik"). The question is: Why bother? The original did all this the first time. The Beatles satirize themselves whenever they attempt anything new. (Don't forget the Traveling Wilburys, or McCartney's foray into ambient house with Youth as the fireman. And let's not even start with Richard Starkey.) And you can hear the ultimate Beatles goof just about any time you turn on modern-rock radio. It's name is Oasis, and if there's a better argument that it's time for phony Beatlemania to bite the dust, I have yet to hear it. Jim Derogatis

2 out of 5 stars A Dirk in the lonely heart.......2007-02-19

Eric Idle's pre-fab creation, The RUTLES, were an hilarious dead-on knock-off of the Beatles. But that was 1978, and all four Fabs were alive then-- so laughter came easy. This 1990s rip of the ANTHOLOGY specials and CDs is Idle-less, ill-considered and quite unnecessary.

The new "old" songs here are dismissively mediocre, the three-man-left joke in poor taste, and even the mixes seem wrong: music obscures many vocals to the point where this not only doesn't sound like the Beatles, it ain't the RUTLES, either. Give it a rest Neil-- it's not funny anymore, mate!

5 out of 5 stars I don't like anchovies - on top of strawberries .......2006-10-02

Way under rated Neil Innes, he of genius Bonzo Dog Band, parodies way over rated mop heads with better music and for sure funnier lyrics:

I don't like anchovies
on top of strawberries
and cream

Great pop music.

Some day people might wake up and realize how great the Bonzo's were. Razor sharp satire, cogent social commentary and guys who could play rings around most bands, especially when it comes to wailing on tubas and spoons. But watch out, the gorilla might throw a REAL bomb into the audience. Once they blew up the stage. Too bad for the Who.

5 stars because Neil has earned it. More than once.

4 out of 5 stars a return to greatness.......2006-09-17

There's something strange and ironic in the fact that the hugely talented Neil Innes has written some of his finest music for this ongoing Beatles parody project. What makes THE RUTLES so special, it seems to me, is that despite the fact that specific Beatles songs were used as parody models for the entire history of this undertaking, Neil Innes' innate creativity has made these songs intensely effective, hooky and successful on their own terms. As pretty much the majority of all songwriters and composers are influenced by other songs and music anyway, the fact that these songs are overt homages to specific source material is hardly reason to dismiss their undeniable quality as examples of songwriting and producing craft.

Kudos all around to everyone involved, but a special thanks goes to Neil Innes. If you are a Rutles fan and haven't heard some of Neil's own early solo stuff, you are missing out on something special. The guy is still around, still witty and unique. Hats off to Neil, and to this enjoyable collection of elaborately produced songs, seemingly as much a labor of love and respect for the Beatles as any kind of satire.

5 out of 5 stars Keeps getting better.......2006-05-22

This is unlike the first Rutles album which it was made with not too much effort, most songs just a music ripoff with changed lyrics, with a few brilliant original exceptions (Nevertherless, Cheese And Onions, Doubleback Alley, etc). Those were original songs inspired in beatles sound, with new lyrics AND music, and you could still tell in which song it was inspired. Well, most of the songs in Archeology are original, with music that stands on its own, sometimes is like The Beatles had made some more new songs. I love Eine Kleine, Joe Public, and the rest of them. Try to listen to them in a good stereo, they have a really good sound. This isn't a parody anymore and I can't understand those who underrate this album because of that, this is a true and original beatles tribute that any beatles fan will appreciate.

    Album Description

The Rutles are the infamous Beatles parody band created by Monty Python's Eric Idle and Bonzo Dog Band's Neil Innes. On this 1996 collection of 'unreleased' recordings (actually, it's mainly material recorded specifically for this release), Idle's Dirk McQuickly is nowhere to be seen but Innes' Ron Nasty is joined by original members Ricky Fataar (Stig) and John Halsey (Barry) for more Beatle-esque fun. Features the single 'Shangri-La'. EMI Gold.

    5 out of 5 stars dynamite.......2002-11-03

He is the best. I also caught him live. I was waiting for a train in williamsburg. He was playing on the same bill as another singer/songwriter Ron Fetner (worth checking into). I loved Rosser's work. Incredible songwriting and wonderful delivery. I was blown away.

    5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful surprise!.......2002-05-19

I went to see another artist at a local cafe, and figured I'd just have to "tolerate" the opening act until the "real stuff" came on. Well, the opening act was Chris Rosser, and I was frankly sad to see him leave the stage. A consummate musician, he performed a number of songs from this album, and I bought "Archeology" right after the show. The title track and "The Laundromat Song" are my favorites -- the first is energetic and nostalgic, while the second is quiet and sweet. This guy is incredible. Check him out!

    5 out of 5 stars Just excellent........1999-05-23

As a big David Wilcox fan, this CD sure pleased me. If you like that kind of warm and thoughtful music, be sure to pick this one up. I sure hope Chris releases a new one soon; 'Archaeology' is wearing out my CD player!

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding album!.......1998-09-21

This is an excellent album of contemporary folk in the style of David Wilcox. Chris Rosser shows a number of musical influences which effortlessly intertwine in each piece. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars For David Wilcox Fans..........1998-06-23

Chris Rosser is a fine guitar player and vocalist is the style of David Wilcox. In fact, you can hear David Wilcox singing background vocals. On the very first play, I fell in love with the relaxing style and intelligent and occasionally humorous lyrics. The first David Wilcox CD I purchased was based on a review that said "if you like James Taylor, you'll like..." Hopefully this five star review will encourage others to take a chance on a new name.

The first release from this hardworking chicago math rock band. They exercise extreme control through this 5 song EP. There are complex layers of guitars and bass over almost obsessively tight rhythms (sometimes unconventional by rock standards) that flow almost unnoticeably under the listener's ears. Dig it.

Now I know where Oasis got their 'sound' from- The RUTLES!!
Archeology has a cool collection of tunes, very nicely recorded, and humorously funny with a twist of Lennon's ghost breathing in the microphone. I'm still a huge fan of the first Rutles album, btw.

        Long Live The Rutles!

        5 out of 5 stars EXCELLANT!.......1999-06-03

Well.....Dirk,Nasty,Stig and Barry have done it again.(Except for Dirk). The Music is great...but if you want to get a REAL import...I say locate the Japanese Import! (With 20 Tracks!) Missing here are, "It's Looking Good"(Demo),"Baby Sil Vous Plais","Lullaby" and "My Little Ukelele". The last two were only on the Japanese version! The Rutles will forever be Pre-Fab in my book! Loads of fun! Good on ya lads. (And no hard feelings)
