Nomadic Southern evangelist Leon Followill may take soap suds to the mouths of the kinfolk wunderkinds--his three sons and a nephew--in Tennessee quartet Kings of Leon, whose second album spins enough cuss phrases and sexual allusions to leave Dolly Parton flushed. But the peculiar 20-something longhairs also fuel up on a filthy shotgun bass and relentless guitar riffs, complementing the delightfully discordant drawl of vocalist Caleb Followill to whittle a 35-minute grab bag of garage rock, English blues, sixties psychedelia, London Calling-ska, spaced-out country waltzes and front-porch, red-state revelry. Without revising its 2003 debut Youth & Young Manhood, producer Ethan Johns (The Jayhawks, Ray LaMontagne) steers the band down a similar mischievous road, integrating poles-apart rhythms and techniques into an energized jumble of rotating tempos and lyrical bombshells. Putting faith in earth-shakers like "Velvet Snow" and "Pistol Of Fire," the wound down and pleasing "Milk" and its yodeling cousin "Day Old Blues," the Kings ultimately escape Preacher Leon's retribution, rendering him speechless--save for a simple "amen." --Scott Holter

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-07-10

This ablum is great all the way around from the tempo, lyrics and instramentals to the tone and depth of each successive track. I definitely reccomend this to anyone who is a fan of The Rolling Stones, White Stripes or The Black Keys.

5 out of 5 stars Heartbroken Smiles.......2007-06-21

This is, in my opinion, the best album put out by the Kings of Leon so far. It's right in the sweet spot between their early, gritty, garage rock days and their current, polished, art rock style. The songs have a strange poetic truth to them, going between stories of growing up, breaking up, incest, and even erectile disfunciton with grace and a unique, catchy sound.

If you're interested in the Kings of Leon, but don't know which album to pick, this is the one. I recommend all of their albums, but this is far and away their most inspired record to date.

5 out of 5 stars KOL's Best.......2007-05-12

This album didn't grab me right away, but I liked it more and more as I listened to it. Now I consider it one of the rare albums that really does deserve 5 stars. For the full 5 I think every song should be good, and several of them should be great and that's the case here. I'm not all that fond of KOL's 1st or 3rd albums, but all the planets aligned for this one and they do their own unique thing just right.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album from the best new rock band.......2007-04-19

I can't believe how many reviewers are trashing this band. Open your ears to GOOD music!

5 out of 5 stars The King ain't dead............2007-04-16

How good is this album????

I heard Youth and Young Manhood at my local coffee shop a few years ago and went out and bought it straight away. I liked it, but this is better...way better. I love listening to a band that perfectly mixes lyrics, music and attitude.

To the reviewers who gave this 1 star because Caleb's voice is crap....get a life....if you place that as one of your criteria go and listen to Mariah Carey....his vocals and the raw guitar sound are one of the best musical matches I have heard in a long time and more power to these guys for keeping it real...

Now the tracks....Slow Night So Long, Taper Jean Girl, Milk, King of the Rodeo are all fantasic songs but pound for pound "The Bucket" is their best song recorded to date. The rattling drum beat in the chorus makes this one of my fav tracks.

Really there are no weak songs, it is just one of those rare albums that hits the mark in so many ways. My only regret is that I missed seeing them when the toured last year especially considering they held an impromptu gig at my local.....Oh well next time around...

Album Description

Limited edition 2004 album from Kings Of Leon featuring the first single 'The Bucket'. Hand Me Down. Having released a debut album that you can safely say was well received (the NME described it as, 'one of the best debut albums of the last ten years'), Kings Of Leon have their work cut out to produce a suitable follow-up. Thankfully their sophomore effort, the strangely titled `A-Ha Shake Heartbreak', is more than a match for its illustrious predecessor. Fast paced, lyrically shocking and, rather surprisingly, with added yodelling, `A Ha Shake Heartbreak', is a shoe-in for one of the best albums of 2004.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible.......2007-05-17

I ordered this product over a month ago, it took the company a month to let me know what I had ordered was out of stock then another two weeks for it to get to me.
I love this cd, these guys are so talented! The disk was worth the weight!

5 out of 5 stars Utterly Fantasticly fantastic.......2006-02-17

Like my American cousins accross the pound, i've been very slow on the uptake to KOL. It wasn't until a friend honoured me and gave a copy, whilst shocked at the fact that i managed to overlook them.
Took it home, put it on and haven't stopped listening since. Bought the original today, and will definitely be buying their first album also.
The lead singer's southern American drawl definitely adds to making his voice one of the sexiest i know. Pistol Of Fire gets me every time..."Aiyah, where is it you want to take me. Aiyah, where is it you want to go"...he's taken me there and back many times over.
Buy! Buy! Buy! You're going to love this!

This album rocks nice one to bring back rock and get rid of rubbish indie.

3 out of 5 stars Lyrics let the side down a bit.......2006-01-13

I really loved this bands first album Youth and Young Manhood. Its a mystery to me what makes a good album, but all the ingredients were there. Aha Shake Heartbreak sounds forced. Sure, they've incorporated more influences but there ain't as many songs you can put on at a party and get people dancing. That's the sort of band I thought KOL were, a kind of update on the Rolling Stones. I was hoping they would not take themselves seriously and just put out another album of kick-ass southern style, it knows where its going and thats the beauty of it, rock'n'roll, but instead they're trying real hard to get to that place the Pixies got to so effortlessly. Another thing starting to grate is all the misogyny in the lyrics. The boys need to get someone (perhaps someone older or a gay guy) to introduce them to some decent women. I don't mind a song or two about femmes fatale, but an entire album is too much.

There are still some great moments on this album. The Bucket is the best song by a long shot, and an obvious single choice. Aha Shake Heartbreak has more a more new wave feel and less emphasis on blues rock and blues based riffs. Oddly enough, it was this album that put the Strokes in mind. Shades of The Pixies and other unbluesy bands can be heard as well.

Overall I think that KOL are a good band and their stuff is always worth checking out. I hope Caleb finds a nice girl (or boy, if he's that way inclined) so he'll stop slagging off groupies though.

5 out of 5 stars Out of this world.......2005-12-20

"Aha, Shake Heartbreak' is easily the best release of 2005. No comparison, no contest. The music, lyrics and vocals are not recycled sounds but new music in the truest sense. This album is NOT familiar; it's beautiful art for music lovers, not for music listeners. If you both expect and want to hear Cold Play-esque tunes (i.e. easy, unoriginal, redundant, unexceptional music), don't buy it this album.

When new bands come out, people say they sound like The Beatles, Dylan, The Velvet Underground, Zepplin, The Smiths or Pixies (i.e. bands with distinct, ground-breaking sound). Pretty soon they'll be saying that bands sound like The Kings.

Yes, The Kings of Leon are that talented. Yes, this is coming from a music elitest. No, I don't live for The Shins.

If you see them live, you won't be sorry. They're rad, rad, rad.

And lastly, if you love this album, buy the first. You'll be mesmerized by the sensational growth in one year (though the album gorgeous in its own right).

1 out of 5 stars worst cd i ever bought.......2005-10-10

they won't let you put zero star. this album is garbage, not one even decent song. the vocal are horrible like a 6 year old boy. save your money, and your ears

4 out of 5 stars Meet The New Southern Gothic.......2005-06-14

Unavoidably catchy and intoxicating in their revamping of good old southern rock, the Kings of Leon shoot for the stars on their second release. With Caleb slurring his way through some of the most interesting bare bones rock in years, "Aha Shake Heartbreak" just misses being a perfect album. Evidence of growth is all over the place, be it the acoustic tease of the sexual "Milk" or the sly party pooper of "Soft," these four hippy rock revivalists are hitting all the right notes.

Maybe it was the experience of being prophets outside their native land (as the Kings are huge in England now), or just their rural woodshedding prior to being discovered, but there is a real humble quality to "Aha Shake Heartbreak." As I listen to the stunning work on "Taper Jean Girl" and "Four Kicks," I am left with the impression that ego has not caught up with this band in the way that so many New York City scenster groups (hyped in much the way KoL have been of late) muddle their music with a sense of false importance.

That is to the betterment of the Followill clan. They rock with a purity that leans towards the Stones, or of a more recent vintage, The Black Crowes. Is it that southern rock genetic thing? Think of the Robinson, Allman or the Van Zandt brothers. And dang it, why can't radio stations that insist on playing Skynyrd ten times a day make room for something as fresh and exciting as Kings of Leon's "The Bucket"? But with the big leap in skill from "Youth and Young Manhood" to the excellent "Aha Shake Heartbreak," Kings Of Leon beat the sophomore slump by a country mile.
