4 out of 5 stars Bizarre, Attention-Deficit Prog/Punk/Rock/Noise?!.......2007-07-17

The Fall Of Troy are an interesting new band, combining elements of some recent musical trends into....something. Metal, psychedelia, world music, punk and rock all get stirred together in this impatient, wildly fast-moving brew. Sort of like what would happen if you combined At The Drive In, Underoath, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Rush, and Clutch. So, of course, they are virtually indefinable.

Comparisons to The Mars Volta are unavoidable; they play the same style of "outside the box" avant-garde weirdness, and the vocals literally sound just like Volta alum Cedric Bixler-Zavala; but Fall Of Troy guitarist/vocalist Thomas Erak has obviously been weaned on Sabbath and Metallica riffs, and this makes Troy's sonic blowout a bit heavier, which is refreshing for me. Interesting stuff, and pretty catchy sometimes, too. I will look forward to hearing more from this band. Not quite cohesive enough to earn more than 3.5 stars, though....

5 out of 5 stars It will be the best album of 2007..well maybe.......2007-06-26

Basically this album is a modern masterpiece of both musical composition and complexity. The Fall of Troy already established themselves as the saviors of post-hardcore with 2005's Doppelganger, and with Manipulator they have surpassed even my high expectations. This album is all over the place but manages to stay grounded in a familiar yet original sound thanks to the top notch production of Matt Bayles. Amazing guitar work + diverse vocal arrangements + air tight drumming + unique lyrical tones = The Fall of Troy. The only bands that could possibly release a better album this year are Between the Buried and Me, The Dillinger Escape Plan and Protest the Hero...and they're going to have to do one hell of a job.
Buy it. Play it. Love it.

5 out of 5 stars Where can I find more stars?!.......2007-06-12

When something heard for the first time can give me goose bumps that says a mouthful. Manipulator is such an audible delight that I'd feel guilty for listening if it wasn't just so "giving me the happiness". As a product of a generation suffering from ADHD I love movement in my music and, as a result, "Quarter Past" has become the reason for my being. I'm proud to own this album - the smile would not dissipate the first time I played it - and would hope that as many people as possible experience what is not only an amazing audible opus but a marvel of creativity.

2 out of 5 stars ummm..............2007-05-30

i thought i would give this band a try and ya know what; waiste of my download time. music in general; not too shabby at all. vocals/singer: my god, wtf? sounds like he is trying to hard. but the 2 stars go to the music. A. should become like explosions in the sky; just play music. or B. Get a new singer

5 out of 5 stars At First Eh...Then...Oh-Mazing........2007-05-29

When listening to this CD the first time, You notice that it's not as "crazy" as Doppelganger and such. But I have kept putting on in the background and now It is becoming stuck in my head and I am willingly playing it when I drive everywhere, the first 4 songs start off the CD amazingly.

This CD doesn't get repetitive like some of the songs off of Doppelganger. This Fall of Troy is fantastic. You will realize how great and just as hard and crazy it is once you give it a few spins. This is by far the best Fall of Troy CD to date and wouldn't mind them staying in this direction.

5 out of 5 stars EPICS THAT DO NOT DISAPPOINT.......2007-05-14

WHAT A BRILLIANT IDEA TO TAKE HOLLYWOOD'S COLLECTION OF HISTORICAL EPIC MOVIES, EXTRACT THE BEST PORTIONS OF THE SCORES AND COMBINE THEM FROM THE DAWN OF MAN TO THE RECENT PAST. I PARTICULARLY ENJOY THE SUITES FROM GLADIATOR, BRAVEHEART AND THE VIKING. THE REPRODUCTION OF THESE SCORES BY THE CITY OF PRAGUE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA AND CHORUS IS BRILLIANT, AND THE RECORDING WAS EXCELLENT. I ONLY WISH THERE WERE EIGHT DISCS INSTEAD OF FOUR TO COVER THE VOLUMES OF SCORES THAT COULD NOT BE INCLUDED. LET'S HOPE FOR A VOLUME II.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting selections . . ........2006-12-15

This compiiation album makes an excellent gift for that person wanting to discover great, epic scores. I'm surprised, however, that Vangelis' Alexander is included in this one. Not bad, just surprised.

The reason I give this album 4 out of 5 stars is because of the swashbuckler section. How is it that CutThroat Island - one of the greatest epics in history - was scrubbed out of the list? Pirates of the Caribbean is included on the selection but nothing from Debney's masterpiece?!

Yes, that is a huge compilant. If you haven't discovered CutThroat Island, I suggest you get it then you'll understand my frustration. Still, this album is a great buy and worth looking into!

When I think of the "Golden Age of Hollywood", many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "EPICS:THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD ACCORDING TO HOLLYWOOD", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades right and up to the present 2005.

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classics that even the youngsters today recognize...sweeping scores that capture the drama, mystery, adventure, action and romance...one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this...many nominated and winners by the Academy for Best Original Score...

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come...this collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

Album Description

Melodic, uplifting vocals and harmonies, side-by-side with tortured, assaulting screams. Mathematically precise rhythms and complex fretwork, giving way to loose jam-inspired divergences. Pop-meets-punk-meets-metal-meets-rock in the unlikeliest of places: this is the musical crossroads where you'll find Washington State-based trio The Fall of Troy, skittering off defiantly in one direction after another, refusing to stick to any one established road. If it sounds like it all adds up to chaos, that's because it often does - but only in the same beautiful way as our own everyday experience. And with Doppelganger, their Equal Vision debut, that kind of musical experimentation and alternate perspective has enabled Thomas Erak (vocals/guitar), Tim Ward (bass/vocals), and Andrew Forsman (drums) to stand out right from the start. Given the chance to work on the new record with top producer Barrett Jones (Foo Fighters, The Melvins, Jawbox), the band jumped, and entered the studio in exactly the right mindset. "We didn't really go in there with a set sound in mind," says Forsman. "We just kind of figured it out on the spot. So the new album became more of a snapshot of us at the time than a posed picture." Which is fitting, considering that no two live experiences with The Fall of Troy are ever the same. Rather than plan out every aspect of their shows, the band leaves things open on stage, allowing for the music and the energy to take over. No one knows exactly when or how a song will change, or when the atmosphere will explode with electricity, until it actually happens. And while a record can't physically change from listen to listen, that sense of spontaneity remains a big part of what makes Doppelganger so powerful.

God I hate screamo. This music ain't got no heart. Show me the passion and quit the pissin' folks.

5 out of 5 stars Hold On...It Gets Even Better.......2006-11-20

This is by far my favorite band, but it is also not the only thing I listen to. When I first heard this band (FCPREMIX) I didn't like it at all, but after listening to that ten times I was instantly (sort of) obsessed with the band. I would suggest listening to the songs in a certain order, gradually let yourself into the screaming.
FCPREMIX->
"You got a Deathwish Johnny Truant?"->
Act One, Scene One->
Whacko Jacko->
Then you're pretty much into it enough to not be shocked.

5 out of 5 stars Haven't been impressed with a band like this in a long time.......2006-07-21

Ok, I'm old compared to the average Fall of Troy demographic. And back in my teens I listened to a lot of Yes. Yes had complex guitar work and jarring melody breaking riffs which no other prog band really went toward. Until now.

Most TFOT listeners aren't going to be well versed in Yes, but I have a feeling that TFOT is. The precise, ornate, and complex work on this album is amazing.

Plus, I dig the screamo.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD from a Very Promising Band........2006-07-02

This CD is a very complex piece of work. It's definitely got footing in prog/experimental rock, but it also has flourishses in emo/hardcore (thankfully not too much), pop hooks, and some 80's hair metal. It's amazing how even though it's the same thing each time you listen to it, it has such an amazing energy that never really leaves, you'll keep noticing little nuances that are great. The band itself is amazing. Thomas Erak (Vox/Guitar) is sheer brilliance, definitely one of the most talented guitarists I have ever heard, especially considering that he is not only doing some serious guitar work, but singing at the same time. The bass is exceptional as well, with alot of nice chords that really bring out the percussion from the drummer, who is also very talented. It's a little disappointing, though, that these guys are being fairly overlooked by the public. I don't know what's up, but these guys definitely deserve some serious attention, definitely more than any of those hardcore/emo/metalcore bands such as underoath, who merely feign emotion, while these guys are true brilliant, blistering, beautiful emotion. A must have for any music fan who is looking for new talent.

1 out of 5 stars Ewww.......2006-06-27

I first heard fall of troy while a few friends were listening to them. I will admit they do have an amazing guitarist, but he should stick to that. He is a decent singer at best(anyone that knows anything about actual singing knows that), and he is just an awful screamer. Listen to a band like underoath if you want talent in that area. Still though there leadman is without a doubt a very talented musician(not singer), if it were just him the band would survive. I could actually stand everyone but the drummer who is just AWFUL. He is Sooooo repetitive i honestly dont know how any of you can stand it. So basically if you want to hear insanely hard guitar riffs than pick this CD up....If you want a band that has more than one actual musician in it pick something else up.

    Album Description

    Re-issue of the hard-to-find 2003 self-titled debut album!

Recorded at the tender age of 16, The Fall of Troy wowed their local scene with this brilliant self-titled debut. The eleven track assault offered up a chaotic, caffeinated jolt to Seattle, WA and it wasn't long until the album had developed a cult following around the U.S. It was this combination of volatile guitar gymnastics, unpredictable melodies and stun- ning song structures that caught the attention of Equal Vision Records. Following the success of 2005's Doppelganger, a whole new fan base has sought to complete their collection of this highly influential band and obtain this hard-to-find release. The band has continued to support the album by playing these epic songs live to great responses. Look out for the follow up to Doppelganger in 2007 on Equal Vision Records.

    Album Description

If you can imagine the soundtrack to The Lord of the Rings, but with grooving drums, stabbing brass and strings colliding in achingly beautiful dissonance, then you have Fall of Troy. In one long arc, from the elegaic prelude of "Spring, 1194 b.c." to the tragic and powerful lament of "The Horse", the music vividly evokes the eleven-year long Trojan War. Grammy-nominated composer Gunnar Madsen is known for his rich, emotional instrumental music. His `Spinning World: 13 Ways of Looking at a Waltz', has thousands of fans worldwide, and has been featured in many episodes of HBO's `Sex and the City,' in Paramount Pictures' `Just a Kiss,' and on NPR's `Morning Edition,' `All Things Considered,' and `This American Life.'

5 out of 5 stars Sick, Sick, Sick, Sick, Sick........2007-04-28

The record is brutal. Polished like a wet knife. Fast, aggressive, mindboggling at how one can play such riffs and sing at the same time.

They fuse all sorts of hardcore and metal and classic rock into an experimental gem worth actually listening to. If the Mars Volta was based on hardcore and not, well, classic rock, they would sound like this. Tapping, Distortion... Even the bass work in the power trio really adds to it by not just playing roots. (see last march of the ents)

Did i mention how absolutely loud this album is? The vocals, albeit a little emo, have that frantic vocal blender that makes the Blood Brothers great, topped off with the sweet 16 yr old voice that really makes this the most mature musical band of 16 yr olds since the 1.6 band in 1996.

The drums don't get enough play. That's probably my only concern. They're pretty good, not as good as the bass work or guitar, but, still, this album, much better than Doppelganger is a must-pick up.

5 out of 5 stars Insane talent, mind-blowing music, and wtf is this for real? melt into one amazing CD.......2006-06-12

Chaotic, yet controlled with precision. This is the first big release from The Fall of Troy, and IMO one of the best releases ever. Sure, it's not polished like the big labels, but that makes it all the more fun.

And in response to TVX: What the hell is your problem? I looked through your reviews and 90% of them are just 1 star insults to the band and it's fans. Seriously, you need to see a counselor, they can fix your anger/social/mental problems. Maybe you feel cool going around the site and insulting music that other people like, but why waste your time? The reviewers and listeners here know that pessimists like you find enjoyment in doing anything that puts others down, which makes your reviews pointless and not worth reading. So stop making us waste time scrolling over your BS and join a group of outcasts like yourself in anger management class. If you aren't ever going to mature past your kindergarten bully attitude, follow the kindergarten rule: if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.

    5 out of 5 stars A M A Z I N G.......2006-04-28

This group is far ahead of the crap in the modern scene. If anything id say they remind me of the old saosin or maybe the sounds of animals fighting. Not because of anything melodical or technical content but more about the pure raw energy they put out. Ive listened to everything, emo emocore, rap, underground hiphop, electronica, metal, hardcore, you name it. Rarely do you come across something this ground-breaking or full of potential. Not to mention some great song names ;D The guitars are mind blowing, no band these days has guitar that great(besides the old saosin oc) and i would hardly categorize this as emo, nothing emo about it. FOT is imo a part of the new experiment wave arising in the scene with other bands like circa survive, tsoaf, and those are the only ones i can think of at the top of my head. They dont necesarily sound similar at all, but more importantly these groups are trying to break new ground and mesh more influences together. These guys will be the godfathers of some massive genre one day. Buy this cd and let its technicality and energy blow you away. Like someone earlier said it hits you like an atomic bomb.

5 out of 5 stars Do you have a Q-tip?.......2006-01-28

If so please pierce my eardrums. I cannot stop listening to FOT. I wake up singing Ghostship Part 4 and go to bed singing Mouths like Sidewinder Missles. Everyday it is played either in my car or at home. I can't get enough of it. I need my daily fix of FOT. Is this addiction a good thing? I can't find anything else to fill this hole. Nothing else compares.
I know this is my second review, but The Fall of Troy addiction compells me to do so.

1 out of 5 stars Trendy worthless crap.......2005-12-28

There's a thousand other "hardcore" bands that sound similar if not exactly like this abomination. I don't care how talented and technical they are. They make lackluster music. They just hopped right on the trend train to emoville.

    Album Description

No Second Troy recorded its debut CD "Fall" in the spring of 2004 at Bias Studios in Springfield, VA, the recording studio where the Dave Matthews Band recorded its platinum album "Remember Two Things" and where Mary Chapin Carpenter recorded a number of her Grammy-winning albums. Mike Fisher enginnered the record, and mastering was done by Grammy award-winner Charlie Pilzer. Beginning with an evocative instrumental introduction leading into the resonating Hedge, the CD ranges from upbeat guitar-based rock tunes such as Telephone, Last Best Thing, and Misbehaving to more atmospheric, piano-driven songs such as Teleology, Awaken, and Holding Pattern. And the band doesn't even know what to make of the weird result of The Other Way, which it is still arguing over. However the music is categorized, Fall is pulled together by pulsing rhythms, ear-catching melodies, and lyrics that capture the search for ways to get past regret and break cycles.

5 out of 5 stars Great contemplative lyrics and addictive rifts.......2004-11-02

Follwing eras of agnst-ridden grundge and then sugar-coated, image-driven pop, it's nice to find a band who realizes you can have musical and lyrical substance and still have fun. The comparison to Coldplay, DMB, Ben Fold's and Remy Zero are well taken, but you'll also hear influences as diverse as Josh Kelley, Billy Joel, and Bob Dylan. A great CD to have in the car or for relaxing with a bottle a wine at the end of the day. NST is also fabulous live if you're lucky enough to catch them in the metro DC area.

5 out of 5 stars You're gonna wanna buy this one........2004-09-30

No Second Troy's debut album, Fall is an unexpected pleasure. You can listen to it one song at a time and they are all straight up hits.
The album as a whole reveals a long soulful journey you can take over and over again and never arrive in the same place twice.
It is intelligent music you can think with your heart.

Why haven't I heard these guys on the west coast!? This sound is really fresh and the lyrics reflect such a range of emotions. Loving this album!

5 out of 5 stars Wake up singing.......2004-09-21

I love this album - I keep waking up with the songs floating through my head. The tunes have great lyrics and wonderful melodies. The band's sound is really tight and a lot of fun. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Great Band, Great CD.......2004-09-20

I heard about this band through word of mouth. I have to say . . . the local buzz is correct, these guys are good. These versatile musicians weave pulsating - and occasionally soaring - rhythms through their surprisingly sophisticated and catchy lyrics. What remains are songs that simply pull the listener along.
