Sumday doesn't so much represent a stylistic change for Grandaddy as it does a change in attitude. The Sophtware Slump, its predecessor, superbly combined low-budget experimentalism and country-tinged American pop to evoke everyone from the Flaming Lips to Neil Young to ELO. Sumday finds the California band conducting business as usual, though exhibiting a noticeably brighter mood. "I got not reason to be weathered and withery / Like in the season of the old me," Jason Lytle sings on opener, "Now It's On," demonstrating a newfound optimism that rears its sunny head throughout the album. "The Group Who Couldn't Say" could have been a bitter tirade against the music industry, but it's not, saved by Lytle's fragile voice, which is sweet without being naïve. "Stray Dog and the Chocolate Shake," meanwhile, is carried along by a bouncy keyboard riff that's reminiscent of Under the Western Freeway's "A.M. 180," but with more playful lyrics. Even slower, more melancholy songs such as "Yeah Is What We Had," "The Warming Sun," and "Saddest Vacant Lot in All the World" retain the quality that Grandaddy's trademark sound: simple music played on a grand scale. --Robert Burrow

4 out of 5 stars mixture of other bands??.......2007-05-02

This album really blew me away, these guys should be much better known. But part of their problem is that if the listen has heard some other big mainstream bands they will think that Grandaddy is simply a spinoff. which they are not. but they do sound a little like a mixture of Wilco, the Flaming Lips, and a touch of Modest Mouse. this is very enjoyable listening--get into so real music and spread it around!!

4 out of 5 stars Space/Country Rock - Americana?.......2007-01-29

Very interesting music which definitely should have a wider audience, but alas I believe is no more? I bought this on a whim having seen and heard of Grandaddy and in my wild imagination thought it was something like Lambchop, bordering on Old 97's. No its not and I'm glad. Jason Lytle who is Grandaddy is a unique individual. The music with the lightness of touch is almost throwaway in style, apart from the throbbing base and rhythm guitars. The lyrics could be considered lightweight, but bottom line is the combination is lovely, funny, quirky and catchy. All with a uniqueness which is hard to define. Maybe XTC, My Morning Jacket but with their own stamp. I don't know if I've articulated the individuality, class and style well enough, but I for one will be seeking out the other albums.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite albums........2006-08-31

Incredible summation of the turn of the millium American state of human existance. Irresistably full of classic imagery, a highlight being "The Group who Couldn't Say", a story of suburban youth who meet nature and are confounded by it's presence. "And Daryl couldn't talk at all/ He wondered how the trees had grown to be so tall/ He calculated all the height and width and density for insurance purposes..." One of the greatest musical pieces of art ever created!

4 out of 5 stars Everything done right.......2006-08-26

What an amazing band they were. Having just discovered "Fambly Cat" I sought out earlier albums and I am amazed at this one. Tracks 2-7 are absolute perfection. I've just spent the last few hours listening repeatedly, over and over and over again to "El Caminos In The West" - that is a song which is so perfect it is beyond belief. Everything about that song is done exactly right: production, cadence, tone. It is a brilliant example of what happens when everything just comes together and WORKS. I could listen to that track indefinitely and not tire of it. That is truly a great experience, to discover perfect songs like these and really feel them.

4 out of 5 stars best of the bunch.......2006-05-05

I have a hard time describing this music. You hear them called the American Radiohead a lot and that's a pretty good description because this album DOES remind me of OK Computer. It also reminds me of the Flaming Lips which is a good thing. Above all their music is catchy and interesting. I've listened to several of their albums and Sumday was the most musically accessible which is probably why I liked it the best. It was one of my favorite albums of 2003 or 2004 and definitely worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars Could be the best rap album ever........2005-12-09

This could be the best album I've ever heard. The vocals are off the hook, production is sicc, it bumps HARD in the scraper. I can't wait to snag the new album "World Premiere." The Team is the new hope for the bay.

5 out of 5 stars best album ever.......2005-12-04

this is the one of the best rap albums i have ever heard. im dissapointed they did not blow up nationwide. i am awaiting their second album with hits such as "good girl" and "show me you're nasty"
they are awesome

5 out of 5 stars The Team.......2005-04-14

Excellent... "I'm on One" is the song of all songs. Sit back and listen to the lyrics. If you're from the Bay, you know what he's talking about. "It's Gettin' Hot" has a nice beat and flow. I just gotta say thanks to them. BUY IT!

5 out of 5 stars I rather get Moe Doe.......2005-02-27

overall this album iz tyte. the worst thing bout tha album iz dat dere arent enuff trackz 2 satisfy, but the ones da hav are good enuff. The well known song off da album iz "it's gettin hot" which iz a big ass club banger. the track "Rather Gt Moe Doe" ft. keak da sneak slapz yadamean. iz gotta b da best song on da cd. another good track iz "I'm on one". da cd iz juss good. cop it.

3 out of 5 stars some goodies here........2005-02-04

Yo this cd is banging! "It's gettin hot" is a sexy track with a strong beat, definitely doing it up big time. "The Hype" is another head banger, catchy beat and it makes you wanna pop it up in ya systems when you is riding. They got a soft track "Love to Love You", it's alright not that explosive but it's cool. "The Cycle" an in depth "feel where i'm at" kinda tune, pretty good. "EVerybody in the Club" is somewhat of a dissapointment, kinda weak not that catchy. Overall this cd is pretty good, lyrically it's alright nothing ear captivating but s'all good, I'd still recommend this cd no doubt!

5 out of 5 stars A Classic from the Bay!.......2005-10-26

This cd could very well be Messy Marv's best. It is a definite classic. He sure isn't the best rapper out there but he does bring some of the tightest beats. This is one of those album's that will be a classic for a long time. Plenty of great guest apppearances from Suga Free, Clover Geez, E-40, and Yukmouth. There's even a nice tribute to Mac Dre. Be sure to get this one.

        5 out of 5 stars instant classic.......2005-08-25

messy marv gets better and better wit time. this album is up there with disobayish. u got rich the factor, lil flip, dead prez on here the beats are sic overall a sic ass album

5 out of 5 stars A good album from Messy Marv and the bay........2005-05-27

I don't want to get into a big rant here, but I liked the beats on this album and Messy's flow is good. I personally like it, think it's his best work. Also pick up his Best Of for some cool joints as well.

5 out of 5 stars Let it Be Known.......2005-05-03

I thought Disobayish would be a difficult album to top. It was one of my favorites of last year. Thankfully Messy Marv came back with slaps on this new LP. The title, "Bandannas Tattoos and Tongue Rings" is a blatant shot at Black Wall Street rapper the Game. It seems like everyone is going hard at the Game right now. Marv is also airing out the rapper Obie Trice.
The production is consistently excellent and definitely on the same level as his last album. These are some of the hardest beats out right now, period. Almost every track on here is thick. Mess can hold an album on his own and the guest appearances are not out of control (but check out Suga Free's fly contribution to "Sexy Thing"). Some of the skits are funny, especially "Eat the Poot". Marv is on that laid back, beatin down the block vibe so it dont sound like a lot of cats from the bay that are hot right now. Someone is going to have to call their album "Sponge" after soaking game from "Bandannas Tattoos and Tounge Rings", another high powered album from one of the best in the Bay and definitely one of the best LP's so far this year

Truthfuly if u aint from the bay i dont expect u to feel this. You wont be up on the slang u wont be up on nadanawmean? Dont approach this here close minded tho cuz keak is unconventional to the fullest. The creater of the fa sheezy that erbody and they mama wanna use (i kno u thought it was e-40 but naw he even acknowledged keak as the one) comes thru wit a slappin turf classic nawmean. If u in the town? u daym sure to hear this one slappin and dats on everything i love. Keak dont disappoint... he aint jay-z with the lyrics, he aint pac with the depth...but he aint tryna be like nobody else and thats wha catches ya ear...

I never write reviews, but for this trash something had to be said. This is the worst album that i heard in a long time. First off it has the dumbest intro in history, the beats are the only positive thing, and they arent that good. Save ure money and ure hard drive do downlaod this. hopefully this is his last album.
