The name Tara MacLean might give cause to wonder if she is some sort of Sarah McLachlan parody. The truth is not too far off. They are both singer-songwriters-pianists from eastern Canada and MacLean enjoyed some left-of-the-limelight attention during the Lilith Fair. But beyond these immediate factoids, the comparisons to McLachlan end. Musically, Passenger has more in common with Jewel's albums. While Jewel turned her street-musician urchin experience into lyrical source material, MacLean turns to her survival of a rather unusual and not entirely pleasant upbringing by her Wiccan-turned-born-again-Christian parents for inspiration. Just as Jewel's lyrical triteness alienates the pragmatic, the New Age undercurrents in MacLean's album, charged with velvety-soft synths and the obligatory trip-hop rhythms, runs the same risk of leaving a syrupy taste. However, some people like their music with a cherry on top, even when the subject matter is bitter; for those, this album will satisfy. For a truly impressive collection in this arena, Kendall Payne's debut cannot be recommended enough. --Beth Massa

Like the best guitar heroes, Ben Folds, pianist and leader of a guitarless trio called the Ben Folds Five, commands and fuels his small, tightly wound ensemble with an authoritative, nearly virtuosic style. Folds, based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, borrows from everywhere but lends new inspiration and insight to the instrument's possibilities--he's the Jimi Hendrix of the baby grand. His frenetic keypounding eclipses old-time styles from honky-tonk to Jerry Lee Lewis rag, and he outplinks megastars such as Elton John and Billy Joel while sifting them both through the mondo hammerings of classic pop-loving alternative keyboard bashers like Todd Rundgren and Squeeze's Jools Holland. To complement Folds-the-pianist's clean and bright ivory tinkerings, Folds-the-singer's clear and dynamic tenor swirls through Folds-the-songwriter's very capably crafted, sugary pop gems. "Philosophy" starts with a rolling Joel-like intro, slips into a Rundgrenish verse and chorus--complete with the perfect Beatlesque harmonies of bassist Robert Sledge and drummer Darren Jessee--and then breaks out in an overdriven piano quote from Gershwin in the climactic solo. "Underground" Sgt. Peppers us with faux theatrics and then plunges into a soul-gospel groove about the joys of the alternative rock scene. "Uncle Walter" is a character sketch Ray Davies wishes he wrote but couldn't; "Boxing" is an imagined confab between Muhammad Ali and Howard Cosell that Tom Waits wishes he wrote but wouldn't. The rest of Ben Folds Five's debut achievement just does what any other timeless summer record should: it makes you feel sunny enough inside to last all through the year. --Roni Sarig

5 out of 5 stars More upbeat than Whatever and Ever Amen.......2007-07-19

Damn man, Ben Folds Five is an impressive band. THey aren't anywhere near to be my favorite band (or for that matter, in the top 10), but Ben Folds, Robert Sledge and Dareen (SP?) Jesse are all talented. Ben Folds
is pretty self-explainitory, but when you add the jazzy drums, ______ yeah! Robert Sledge than does the finishing touches, and bingo __________! There you go! And did I mention, Ben Folds is an impressive singer.

This album may not be as good as Whatever and Ever Amen, but if that album lacked anything, the songs weren't as upbeat (though there will a few). This album has enough different hooks and includes Where's Summer B. and Underground, which is yet another reason to have this one as well as Whatever and Ever Amen (you could pursue the others if you wish, but I am interested in checking out other bands).

This album isn't more "raw" just not as slow as WAEA. And it damn works well. I didn't enjoy it as much as WAEA (I could give a ________ less about the whole Brick thing), but I really did enjoy it nonetheless. The first six tracks are excellent, and the rest have a couple of songs that don't live up to some of the others(video and sports and Wine), but that's because those songs are so ____________ excellent. Either or, it dosen't ___________ matter, this album is refreshing enough, just like the last one. Ben FOlds Five can make pop music that lasts long and dosen't get old. I don't know how he does it (probally the piano), but hey, it's a ___________ classic summer/winter/all seasons album, the same as WAEA.

5 out of 5 stars A must have!.......2007-07-03

I love Ben Folds & have been an avid fan since 1996. This album introduced me to his greatness. I'd heard "Alice Childress" on KCRW & had to pull over in the car. I love the raw sound & fuzz bass. Ben Folds is the Beatles for our generation!

5 out of 5 stars Ben's best .......2007-02-19

I have everything Ben has ever done since this album (with the 5, by himself, with the Bens, etc.). This is still my favorite collection of Ben Folds tunes ever. Of course I will always have a place in my heart for Whatever and Ever Amen (I listened to it literally 1000's of times after it was released!) but this is the disc I can go back to and listen to all the way through any time (Whatever and Ever has some definite slow sections). This first eponymous CD is filled with great songs...every single one a "keeper." "Jackson Cannery", "Philosophy," "Boxing," "Uncle Walter," "Underground"...great songs to drive around in your car and rock out to. These guys were so good...I like Ben's solo work, of course, but the Ben Folds Five were the greatest.

5 out of 5 stars yeah, these guys are pretty good..........2006-01-12

One of my favorite pop albums of all time, and I enjoy this album even more than their more well-known 1997 album "Whatever & Ever Amen". The songs feel different from each other (the funkadelic edge of "Jackson Cannery" to the classic pop sounds of "Philosophy" and "Uncle Walter"), yet they sound enough the same to know what album you're listening to.

"Underground" and "Video" are also standout tracks on this CD. The former delivers the joys of alternative rock with an upbeat sound, while the latter a slower but very catchy look into the future when "we live in a video".

If you're looking for a sunny pop CD with excellent musicianship, look no further than right here.

5 out of 5 stars Original and Amazing.......2006-01-10

This album is absolutely fantastic. Ben has shows some great storytellins ability in his originals and of course is a phenomenal piano player. Percy and Darren are also great musicians and help create and incredibly full and interested sound for a three piece.

5 out of 5 stars Mnemic - Passenger, Mnemic's 3rd Album.......2007-06-03

Mnemic is one of the most underrated, unknown bands I have ever heard. These guys are hard, heavy, talented, brutal, and unbelievable. The only problem with their CD's is that they are very hard to find in the stores. I would imagine this has a lot, if not everything to do with the fact they are just not from the United States.

After hearing their second CD, I went online and bought both of their other CD's immediately. There really is nothing to complain about with this band. There is no weak point in their music. The vocals are excellent, especially the guy with the really low voice, but all of the vocals are great, so it's hard not to acknowlege. Mnemic is one of those bands that have perfect vocals along with some of the heaviest, hardest, and best drums and guitars you will ever hear. There is a lot of bands out there with great drums and guitars, but when it comes to their vocals they are horrible and you can't understand them. THAT IS THE BIGGEST PROBLEM WITH MOST HEAVY METAL BANDS! Except for bands like Soilwork, Mnemic, Machine Head, Fear Factory, A Perfect Murder, Pantera, Down, Killswitch Engage, Dry Kill Logic, Diecast, Soil, Drowning Pool, and some others.

Mnemic's third album is their best and heaviest of the three. I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that they are just great musicians who are getting better at what they do with time. If you like heavy metal and want to hear a great album, go out and buy this one, because it's nothing less than unbelievable.

5 out of 5 stars Let The Passenger Take You For A Ride........2007-05-10

As furious as it is catchy, as dense and layered as it is accessible, Mnemic's latest offering, "Passenger," is an album that has the ability to please just about anyone who loves a good shot of the heavy stuff. Taking obvious influence from groups ranging from Fear Factory to Deftones to Meshuggah, Mnemic do an exceptional job of sounding like something you've heard and loved before, and taking it to the next level, giving it a unique stamp.

Perhaps the biggest help would be in the band's new frontman, Guillaume Bideau, who can scream and shout with the best of them, yet can also handle and balance the melody beautifully, transcending punk rock and heavy metal simultaneously. The band is in top form here, with the rhythm section of bassist Tomas Cowan Koefoed and drummer Brian Rasmussen taking to the forefront and dominating each of the albums eleven tracks. Unfortunately, this doesn't leave much in the way of innovation for co-guitarists Rune Stigart and Mircea Gabriel Eftemie (do you realize what a pain it is to type these names?), as their work, while being solid in it's own right, just doesn't push the limits like the rest of the album.

But that's just fine, because on the whole, "Passenger" is a supreme album. The average listener isn't likely to find themselves getting bored, and after it's all done, you're left feeling like you've just heard something unique. True, the overall soundscape of the album isn't anything new to the genre, but how the band approaches their songwriting, in such an unpredictable, twisting and turning way is more than enough to keep you on your toes and scartching your head. I could get track into track with this album, but there's no point, really. Each song is just as strong as the next and after each listen, you'll surely want more. This isn't just senseless gushing, mind you. Out of all the albums I listen to on a regular basis, this one has truly captured me. Each time I listen, I find something new, which is why it deserves five stars. You're definitely getting your money's worth with this one.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting to say the least.. A Brand new fan review.........2007-04-27

New to this band, picked it up on a whim after seeing the Fear Factory connection (Producer) and trust in the label. What i got was a blend of Fear Factory(riff style, melody lines) + Meshuggah(off beats) + Devildriver (execution and vocal screeches).. Songs actually sound like these bands thrown in a blender, but slices of each carefully pasted together(if that makes sense). If your familiar with all 3 this will be apparent on first listen.
Thats not saying it doesnt work...
The vocalist does grate on ya after a while, but at other times shows an abilty to actually sing well. The offbeats are very strange, in the song 'Stuck Here' it nearly sounds like a warped record. Very cool. Very Meshuggah-ish (if your a fan). There are also plenty of FF style harmonies intertwined within the songs, maybe through suggestion of the producer.Almost sounding like a blatant rip at times, but it adds another dimension to the already (welcomely) overbearing experience. Personally i like it a lot, but it takes a few listens to stick..
The sound quality is really good. Clear.

Best Tracks : Meaningless, Whats Left, Stuck Here, In Control, Psykorgasm, Eye on your Back..

Flaws : Vocal delivery overbearing at times, Songs take a few listens

Positives : Killer riffs and offbeats, Harmony lines are Unique, Great Production.

Good band. I will now look into their prior work. Also a good price!

5 out of 5 stars Without Skipping a Beat.......2007-03-09

Mneimc return after nearly 3 years with their follow-up to The Audio Injected Soul. But something is different. New vocalist Guilliaume Bideau, formerly of French tech-metal band Scarve, joins the group, picking it up perfectly where Michael Bøgballe left off. The Passenger has got all the industrial textures and polyrhythmic mayhem you'd expect from Mnemic, and then some. As for live, Guilliaume does the old songs better than one could hope. This CD should not be past up by previous fans of Mnemic and is highly recommended to fans of Meshuggah and Fear Factory. And while you're at it, head over and check out Scarve, Guilliaumes old band. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible!!!.......2007-02-15

Between Strapping Young Lad and Meshuggah, there is Mnemic. The combination of heavy guitar riffs, a very complicated tempo changes in drums and with an exquesite melodies like Soilwork, Mnemic makes a winning album that all the metal heads need in your collection. Every song is worth the listen but my favorites are: "Meaningless", with a catchy melody and a heavy musicianship, "In control" and in my opinion the best song in the album: "Eye on your back". So try a spin and see for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars "ANOTHER PASSENGER": CARLY SIMON'S OVERLOOKED MASTERPIECE.......2006-12-12

Carly Simon is an awesome recording artist and performer. As a singer, she possesses one of the most emotive, alluring voices in popular music. As a songwriter, she is adept, smart, witty, serious and fun. All of this is brought together on the magnificent "Another Passenger".

Released in mid-1976, when Carly was at the height of her initial fame and 70's influence, "Another Passenger" did not become one of her big hit albums. This is an unfortunate fact of musical history because "Another Passenger" is a masterpiece.

It's all here in a broad, musical diarama: stories of love and love-lost and inter-personal relationships interestingly and excitingly presented by a captivating artist. For on "Another Passenger", Carly Simon created some of her best, albeit lesser-known, songs: the punchy, countrified "Cow Town" about a marriage between two people with almost absolutely nothing in common; the infectious calypso of the fun "He Likes To Roll"; the confessional "In Times When My Head", a fantastic song about losing one's cool when guilt weighs down; the enchanting "Riverboat Gambler"; the chiding "Fairweather Father"; the Van Dyke Parks keyboard-driven "Darkness Til Dawn", a real song about hope and getting through that very difficult break-up; the catchy pop hooks of "Half A Chance"; the taunting accusations of the piquant "Dishonest Modesty" done up in an appropriately down-homey way; and "Libby", a glorious rock-ballad and poetic gem about love and friendship.

The songs on this album also contain some of Carly's most memorable lyrics. Simply stated, each song tells its own story without being overly wrought. Here are some examples of her poetic finery:

-"There are always times when your legs feel broken/but you still don't drop out of the dance" (from "Half A Chance")
-"I pick your pockets hoping to find/Something to hurt about to prove you unkind" (from "In Times When My Head")
-"Folks walking in the street/Everyone has something to do/My brain won't stop showing/Those old movies of you" (from "Darkness Til Dawn)
-"You can House & Garden/Vogue & Glamour, Mademoiselle/But I know you can Bitch & Screw/And Penthouse as well (from "Dishonest Modesty")

Carly adds here to her own fantastic songwriting a Doobie Brothers-backed version of their "It Keeps You Running". It's steamy and sultry to the max. She closes this engaging set of finely-crafted songs with a sweet little ditty, "Be With Me". Who wouldn't want to?

5 out of 5 stars As Usual Ms. Simon Sings About How Great She Is In Bed!.......2005-12-27

This is the usual offerings from Ms. Carly Simon. She sings about being Unfaithful to her partner/lover/husband in the song"In Times When My Head" where the lyrics state "Knowing none could compare with me..." Gee. Ms. Simon. Can't you write about anything else besides how great you think you are in bed? I give this album 5 stars because once again Ms. Simon had the sense to write the similar egocentric, self absorbed songs that she is famous for.The last I heard she was in Rehab for a Percodan Addiction.

5 out of 5 stars Carly keeps us running.......2004-04-27

This is one the best albums Carly ever made. I think it is very
underestimated. I particularly like the perfect ballads like
riverboat gambler and esp. Libby is unforgettable. ( one of the
few lyrics by Carly in which she refers to Europe. Paris, and I
can remember as a fifteen year old boy being so happy that Carly
mentioned Europe - Paris. Thank you Carly. IT IS VERY SAD that
the original picture on the back of the LP is not included in
the CD!!!. Elektra really should take care of their artwork!!
Roger. Europe.

5 out of 5 stars carly simon's forgotten album-but a great one.......2004-02-11

"Another Passenger" is one Carly Simon's best albums. After
Richard Perry produced "No Secrets", "Hotcakes", and "Playing
Possum", all great albums. She turned to Ted Templeman-producer
of Doobie Brothers, Nicolette Larson. I think her version of
"It Keeps You Runnin" is one of her best songs. She sings it
very soulful. The Doobie Brothers version is nice but very catchy. The rest of the songs on this CD are excellent. She
has help from The Doobie Brothers, Linda Ronstadt, and Jackson
Browne. A great album with great songs, singing, and excellent
production. This is different from Carly's other works--but she
does fine

5 out of 5 stars Classic Carly.......2003-08-29

ANOTHER PASSENGER is, I feel, the quintessential album for Carly Simon fans and new listeners alike... This album combines the classic Carly Simon music and vocalizations that made her famous as well as showing the refinement in her talents since her first albums were released... This is THE album to have if you want to sit back, close you eyes, have a cool drink, share an afternoon or evening with a good friend or special someone...
ANOTHER PASSENGER is an unhearalded classic that is destined to "yet be discovered" by the masses... If I could only have one albun....this would be the one...

5 out of 5 stars If you havent experienced Tara, you havent experienced Beauty.......2005-12-08

This is one of the most beautifull albums from the canadians singer/songwritters genre, Tara Maclean provides the rigth atmosphere for everything that represents the brigth and at the same time melancholic side of life, love, and introspection, this young composer brings togheter all kind of influences musical and not musical, folk, poetry and graphic art wich is always included into sleeves artwork and cds booklet along with little pieces from famous novels, "if i fall" is one of my fave songs as well "settling" wich is incredibly touching, "Poor Boy" is another awesome track, i recommed also "silence" her debut album and "if you seeme" EP as well.
Tara has receintly announced that two new released are in process currently, her third solo album and a second release for Shaye, i hope they dont took that long
HM

5 out of 5 stars Thoughtful and moving..........2004-07-21

I like songs that make you think beyond just the words. Songs that you have to *really* listen to in order to get the full meaning. Tara MacLean's songs do just that.
I first heard of her from the television show "Due South" which featured many different kinds of music. The song touched me and I looked in the credits to see who the artist was. Unable to find out anything about her, I was glad to see her song "Holy Tears" featured on the television soundtrack.
On a trip to Canada, I found her first CD Silence and was blown away. Just recently I found Passenger. This one just takes the journey one step further.
I love the angst, the joy and the mystery in each of her songs. Yes, it is music to relax to, but it also opens up your mind to thoughts you might ordinarly just brush away.
ALthough the album can sometimes be hard to find, it is well worth the search.

2 out of 5 stars A Lighter Shade of Gael.......2004-06-12

I bought this CD for two simple reasons, it was cheap ($2.00 at the used record store) and Tara is cute (at least on the front of the CD cover she is). Oh yeah, and her Scottish name evoked hopes of finding another Sarah or Loreena or something along those lines. O.K. so three reasons, but still a pretty shallow excuse for buying a CD. As it turns out it wasn't that bad of an investment. The songs are a little sappy and sentimental but Tara has a pretty voice that is only occassionaly eclipsed by the drum machine that pounds through every song like a jackhammer breaking up the sidewalk in front of your house at 6:00 A.M. on a Saturday morning. This set is nice and unchallenging, but I have been listening to the thing for a few days now and it has been good background music to my life at the moment. That is, aside for that pesky drum machine. The liner notes read like a page from the Tori Amos "How to say thank you in interesting and unintelligible ways so that everybody knows they aren't in on the joke" instructional pamphlet, but whose doesn't any more. This is a nice CD. It could have done with being a little less nice, but there you have it. The only truly exceptional song on the thing, and the one I anticipate through the entire playing is the hidden track #13 that is very raw and primal with lots of humming and hollering (and, yes, it too features the dreaded drum machine). If Tara could channel the type of energy that went into this song into her regular stuff, I think her music would be quite a bit better, or at least quite a bit more dangerous.

5 out of 5 stars oh yeah.......2004-03-21

Tara MacLean's voice is like a dove. Pure and beautiful. Her songs are different, touching and vibrant. I love 'Jericho', 'Jordan' and 'Blinded'. 'If I Fall' is Tara MacLean's single and when I first heard it back when it came out, I was jumping up and down but the name never came up. I searched and searched and eventually forgot completely about it. About 2 years later...there it was again, that SONG! I had to know who it was, I asked a girl in my class who sang the song and she told me 'Tara MacLean, I don't know anything else by her...' but I told her I didn't care and rushed out to the CD store. Bought it, listened to it, never left the CD player. If you want a female singer with strength, power and honesty, get Tara MacLean.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2004-01-16

I first discovered Tara McClean as an opening act for Lisa Loeb in 1997 at the Chicago House of Blues. I was blown away by her live performance as I had previously never heard of her. She is a poetic songwriter, lyricist, and vocalist. She was accompanied onstage by a single musician playing acoustic guitar and I was just enchanted by her soulful songs. This CD is a favorie among my collection.

5 out of 5 stars A Metal Alliance like no Other Before it.......2005-12-27

Passenger's roots extend back to 1995, when Niclas Engelin and Patrik Sten decided to form a side project a shade different from the thrash/death styles that the two were playing. With their respective work in Gardenian and Transport League requiring attention, the project was shelved for a time, but revived a few laters, fleshed out by fellow Gardenian Håkan Skoger and In Flames vocalist Anders Fridén, and by 2000 the first demo was recorded, eventually followed by the self-titled debut album in 2003. True to their early vision, Passenger retains some of the aggression, and at least some of the styles, of the members' main bands, but also injects melody and a fair degree of accessibility. Others have labelled the album as nu-metal, melodic death, or alternative metal, and it is really none of the three, but perhaps a mixture of the three. In Flames fans who weren't pleased with some of the modern touches on Reroute To Remain probably won't be happy with this album, as at times it sounds like some of those influences have been heightened and further developed on Passenger. But this is a well-thought-out album, and there is clearly an audience for this.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2005-10-01

I prefer this mellow and melodic catchy album to In Flame's newer stuff. Plus, the fact that Gardenian members are in this mix solidifies the fact that if you choose to purchase this album you will not be dissatisfied. If you like catchy rock that doesn't sound grungy get this. It's easygoing music for your car or when you go to sleep or when you are depressed.

3 out of 5 stars not amazed..........2004-08-28

well, when I first heard about Passenger I thought it would be something great, but the thing is that is not bad,but its not great to... and that funny feeling when im listening this cd...i dont know,it has a great production, but I still prefer In flames.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD for all types of rock listeners.......2004-06-22

I first listened to Passenger after someone recommended that I listen to them because I liked In Flames and the like.

Although different, the hard baseline still gives it that hard rock feel, with a very slight touch of nu-metal.

When I saw that Anders Friden was the vocals, I expected In Flames type singing, but, instead, I was suprised by Anders'... better? voice. He definitely worked on it, and the outcome sounds very good in this album. He does practically all the singing.

Overall, if you are any type of rock listener, this CD will get you interested. I suggest you give it a try. One of their songs, "In Reverse" is on CenturyMedia.com, their recording label. (...)

This, however, is not the best song on the album. In my opinion, "In My Head", "Just The Same", "Carnival Diaries", and "I Die Slowly" are all equal or better than "In Reverse".

2 out of 5 stars COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER.......2004-03-04

This cd is not that good. It could have been better because there is a member from the group In Flames in this band. I listened to it once and got bored of it. The songs were good for the first listen but not on the second listen. Not really nu-metal if you think it will be.

is the best of the best

3 out of 5 stars Not the best Stanley, but..........2004-06-22

When listening to this album, you have to keep in mind it is indeed a SOUNDTRACK. The songs were written to fit the film, and Stanley Clarke is good at it. "Lisa" and "Cutter's Theme" are definitely the best tracks -- both are highly melodic and leave you humming the tune. The rest of the album gets a little repetitive, so I would leave this to big Stanley Clarke fans.

1 out of 5 stars For Completists.......2003-12-14

Stanley Clakre's recent work consists mainly of sountracks.
Whitch is very sad considering not only how talented this bassist
is but how easily Clarke gives into every obnoxious soundtrack
clishe-namely being overbearing orchestration,pompous
arrangments, cheesy synthesizers and most numbers clocking in at WELL under a minute long.Only a few numbers-notabley the funky blazploitation-like opener "Cutter's Theme" will maintain any interest in this dull collection.I would only collectors or those very interested in 70's fusion artists doinf theatircal music.Otherwise don't bother!

Belew is back in songwriting mode for Op Zop Too Wah. Several of the songs here ("Six String," "All Her Love Is Mine") match the first-rate pop tunes he recorded with The Bears. And fans will enjoy an assortment of first-take efforts that sound like demos for the next King Crimson album ("Modern Man Hurricane Blues," "Live in a Tree"). --Jeff Bateman

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Uneven, but still great........2006-11-11

It's an uneven album, self-indulgent at times, but the last song makes up for any defects. 'On' is one of the greatest post-Beatles pop songs yet.

2 out of 5 stars I just don't get this one........2005-07-14

An odd album that never quite sat well with me, "Op Zop Too Wah" again finds Adrian Belew straining to combine the many elements of his career. I've often felt his early albums were far too saturated in a David Byrne influence, and that the second batch (after the '80s Crimson broke up) was a distinct improvement, but drifting two far into pop. This one, recorded after the Double Trio King Crimson came together, is a strange one-- the songs themselves are interspersed with various brief snippets and musical thoughts, and even the most pop material on here has some sort of bizarre twist to it.

If nothing else, it is a brave album-- Belew covers a ton of ground here, but that shouldn't come as a particular surprise.

The record certainly starts off well enough-- the first half dozen tracks are all fantastic, from a blistering guitar solo traded with verses over brilliant percussion ("Of Bow and Drum"), a goofy love song about a guitar ("Six String"), a dark, haunting, and twisted love song ("All Her Love is Mine"), and at least one piece that defies description in the slightest ("I Remember How to Forget") with a couple little idea snippets. "I Remember How to Forget" is also quite famous for having been the song that King Crimson worked up but Belew pulled back from the band-- its a twisted, contorting song that probably would have done well on a Crimson record.

Unfortuantely, after that, it kind of falls apart, the title track is ok but feels like it drags on forever, but other than that, some dull balladry ("Time Waits") and a bunch of pieces that are either overlong ("High Wire Guitar"), fall apart ("Modern Man Hurricane Blues") or just fail to develop (nearly all of it).

Then again, some folks think this is a masterpiece-- I'm giving it two stars simply for the beginning, but I'd recommend checking out "Here" or "Young Lions" before this one if you're new to Belew.

5 out of 5 stars A Plate Of Sounds.......2004-01-18

This is Adrian Belew's definitive, yet most overlooked album. Almost every style and experiment he's known for crops up on this 21-track journey of an album, it's as though he had taken elements of his own style, influences, instrumental skill and psyche and splattered it onto this disc in an ejaculated spray of musical jism. And with 21 tracks, you get a lot of contrast: experimental guitar textures in 'CONVERSATION PIECE' and 'HIGH WIRE GUITAR', Beatles styles in 'SIX STRING' and 'TIME WAITS', beat poetry with 'WORD PLAY DRUM BEAT', alt-pop in 'SOMETHING TO DO' and modern blues with 'MODERN MAN HURRICANE BLUES' and 'ALL HER LOVE IS MINE'. There's even a rejected King Crimson track('I REMEMBER HOW TO FORGET')and isn't that psychedelic-ish last track('ON') like a strange Thrak/Sgt. Pepper hybrid?

Perhaps this album sounds a bit schizophrenic, but it's pretty cohesive as well- it sounds like a complete album rather than a mass of styles thrown together. Most of the tracks are short, and some tracks sound undeveloped yet done that way on purpose('A PLATE OF WORDS' for example sounds like a regular song which got turned off halfway through). This is some of Adrian's best songwriting, a shame this release got lost in the shuffle amid the Crimson double-trio era and didn't get the recognition it should have. Buy this and take the journey.

5 out of 5 stars Long Live Rock-n-Roll !!!.......2002-08-26

I think phrase "Op Zop Too Wah" is an modernized synonym for the "Rock-n-Roll":))Album is a cerebral work of sound, color and outlandish/creative lyrics. There are a lot of instrumental passages, drums and guitars, effects (landmarks of Belew's inovations). There are some strong ideas, album sounds like a person changing radio stations, each song a different channel on the dial. So that's the way the listener is always cought of guard on what to expect. Op Zop is the retrospective jorney in Belew's career. Song "I Remember How To Forget" closer to Crimson's material, another song "Modern Man Hurricane Blues" is a step in a new direction, it was born from Ade's and Robert Fripp talkings about modernizing of the blues form. It's a song about modern man's city life ("ProzaKc Blues" is another Crimson blues in this case). Op Zop more muscular, more radical and it brings Belew into another dimension, another masterpiece within his works. Adrian Belew world's #1 songwriter and guitar hero of our time... you know with whom... Op Zop Too Wah is a great listening experience in modern Rock-n-Roll history. Belew is a man with many talents and his artwork on album is cool too. Recomended for those who never forget a meaning what Rock-n-Roll is.

5 out of 5 stars Adrian Belew in a Nutshell.......2002-04-21

In his first two albums Adrian Belew looks for his voice and shows his mentors influence. There are some excellent songs and playing but Belew doesn't quite reach his potential. Desire Caught By The Tail, his third album demonstrates his more experimental side to diehard fans. This pretty much becomes the pattern for much of Belew's work with a swing to more pop based songs.

Op Zop Too Wah is where he puts it all together, literally. Every phase of Adrian Belew's ideas fall into place on this album. The guitar work and post beat poet kick the album off with Of Bow and Drum and Word Play Drum Beat. Besides being entertaining pieces of music they are also interesting experiments in the boundries of rock music. The lyrical, pop side of Belew's sound is found on tracks like All Her Love Is Mine and Time Waits.

This can make for sharp contrasts of which there are plenty in this set of 21 songs. There have been complaints about how disconcerting these contrasts are to which I disagree. As an album Op Zop Too Wah is cohesive, it's just not typical of his pop laden prior efforts nor his completely experimental material.

Instead we get a pastiche of the elements that make up Adrian Belew's musical skills, really the first album in his catalog to do so. The key is taking the album for what it is and not what you would like it to be. It is refreshing to hear the various elements of Belew's interests including production skills. The sequencing and spacing of songs are at times surprising yet tasteful. Production quality is excellent.

For new listeners you can expect some pop songs in the acoustic and electric form only they will be a bit twisted from what you may be experienced to. There will be concise excursions into lightly experimental guitar and song structures. There will also be some heartfelt playing and singing to well intentioned lyrics with some occasional humor. Expect some rocking moments as well.

The only negative are a couple of songs that seem underdeveloped or go on a bit long. Keep in mind most songs are well under four minutes so this critisim is to be considered within the scope of the album which is fast paced.

Adrian Belew is that rare artist that can play virtually any kind of music and fit in, he has played with such diverse artists as NiN to Paul Simon to his stints with David Bowie and Frank Zappa not to mention being co-guitarist/vocalist in King Crimson and his pop based band, The Bears. Op Zop Too Wah is a sampling of his interests as an artist and should be listened to as such. There is a lot of great music on this album.

Not to be missed.

Let's face it: Sometimes, even Noel Coward could fail. Take his 1961 musical Sail Away: Coward wrote the book, lyrics, and score--and sometimes you wish he had delegated a bit more. Set on the cruise ship S.S. Coronia, the show certainly has its moments, but overall it fails to make a lasting impression. While there are lovely tunes ("Sail Away," "Later than Spring") and a few peerless comic showcases ("Useless Useful Phrases," "Why Do the Wrong People Travel?"), Coward's trademark wit comes across as toothless now. And yet Sail Away remains cultish because it turned Elaine Stritch into a marquee name. The singer-actor was so good during the out-of-town tryouts that Coward expanded her part, and Stritch ran with it. She sells a ballad like "Something Very Strange" with all her heart, but what she really transcends are bravura pieces such as "Why Do the Wrong People Travel?" (which she reprised in her one-woman show At Liberty). If you want to listen to the birth of a stage star, this CD is it. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars cute Elaine Stritch cast album.......2003-09-17

SAIL AWAY wasn't a big hit on Broadway when it opened in 1961, running a scant 167 performances. However, the show was received with a better reception in London, opening at the Savoy Theatre in 1962, running 252 performances. Noel Coward's sparkling score and the fabulous Elaine Stritch are the main drawcards for buying this cast album.

Fynsworth Alley has reissued the original London cast album of SAIL AWAY, which Stritch herself considers as superior to the Broadway cast album. At last, this tuneful and witty score, with the formidale Stritch as the lead character Mimi Paragon, can be discovered for a new generation of fans.

Most memorable are Elaine Stritch's numbers "Why Do the Wrong People Travel?", "Useless Useful Phrases", "Come to Me", and the lovely 11 o'clock number "Something Very Strange".

The supporting cast includes John Hewer (THE BOY FRIEND) and Dorothy Reynolds (SALAD DAYS), with Grover Dale, Sheila Forbes, Mavis Villiers, Edith Day, David Holliday, Margaret Christensen and Sydney Arnold.

SAIL AWAY is a must-own for fans of Elaine Stritch and the genius of Noel Coward.

3 out of 5 stars Welllll........Elaine is Good But...........2003-08-07

Many Broadway officianados were no doubt looking forward to the reissue of this long out of print "classic" starring the incomparable Elaine Stritch. Sad to say, one listening confirms why this show failed to make an impact, either on Broadway or London's West End. This dreary, bland little musical about not much of anything barely registers on any level. Most of the songs are trivial as well as instantly forgettable, and there is no story to speak of so nothing much keeps you interested. It takes Ms. Stritch's six solos to pull you out of the ether and, although even her considerable talents can't quite make a musical out of this mess, it's a marvelous document of Stritch hitting her stride. Thanks to CD programming, I can skip the rest of the dross and just listen to "Stritchie" (as Noel Coward use to call her) do her thing. And what a wonderful thing it is. Stritch may not have the best vocal instrument ever, but is there anyone else who can put their interpretive stamp on a song the way she does? Much like the late, great Dolores Gray, when Elaine Stritch interprets a song, every other singer in the world might as well forget about ever trying it. Stritch puts her definitive stamp on everything she touches. Yes, a trilly songbird like Julie Andrews makes a song sound wonderful. but with Stritch you hear the words, their meaning, and the song "feels" wonderful. Here, her "Why Do the Wrong People Travel" is a classic of sorts, and she amazingly brought as much gusto to the song in her one-woman show "At Liberty" some forty years later. In fact, she makes even the pedestrian "Useless Useful Phrases" worth a few listens. In fact, it's hard not to imagine what Stritch could have done with great parts at this point in her career, instead of mediocre trifles like "Sail Away". Oh well, what matters most is that Stritch was in the house for "Sail Away", and now she's there to stay. Bon vayage!

4 out of 5 stars Stritch to the Max.......2003-07-28

For anyone who is a fan of Elaine Stritch, this is a must own.

For those of you looking for an interesting new (old) show, this is the one for you. The music is delightfully simple and the lyrics are wonderful. Certain songs have me thinking of Sondheim. Coward is a sarcastic and incredibly funny lyricist.

Just as Bernadette Peters is a perfect match for Sondheim, Stritch is a perfect match for Coward.
