Product Description
Nicolette Larson first came to public attention when she backed up Neil Young on his American Stars 'n Bars disc. She went on to duet with him on his much anticipated Comes a Time album, which was the genesis for Nicolette. Using an even wider-ranging style than friends Linda Ronstadt or Emmylou Harris, Larson hit it big right out of the starting gate with Young's "Lotta Love," a super Top Ten smash. From there, she broadens her approach to include a soulful "You Send Me," the Louvin Bros' "Angels Rejoiced," Motown's "Baby, Don't Do It," and a hard-rockin' "Can't Get Away From You." No matter which genre she aspired to, she seemed to have the chops to do a fine job. Nicolette was a surprise for many when it first came out and is still a pleasure to listen to today. After this, her first effort, the sky was the limit for Larson.-----------1. Lotta Love Young 3:12 2. Rhumba Girl Winchester 3:52 3. You Send Me Cooke 3:56 4. Can't Get Away from You 3:17 5. Listeners familiar with Nicolette Larson's early work as a vocalist with Commander Cody will know right away that this project comes from her smoother-edged solo career. She scored big-easy rock hits, after all, a cynic might add, so it makes sense that her first release of the 1990s (nine years separate this recording and its predecessor, Say When) would be softened by keyboard washes and muted rhythms. But there's a simple reason for this CD's quietude, its floating gentleness: Larson writes in the liner notes that she wrote the songs as she sat by her daughter Elsie May's hospital bed as her daughter recovered. The music had to be all gentle and nonintrusive, and that's how it comes across. This is a great disc to spin as you rock the newborn. Larson's voice peeks out exceptionally as she covers an unreleased Neil Young tune ("Barefoot Floors") and presents a tender reading of "I Bid You Goodnight." Persistently fine layers of accordion and bowed cello give the keyboard-laden environments surprising warmth. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Lullaby CD.......2007-07-03

Absolutely the most soothing and beautiful bedtime music I have heard to help little ones fall to sleep and have a peaceful nights rest. I buy it for anyone who is expecting so it can be part of their newborn's nighttime ritual.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have!.......2007-07-03

This is a must have for any newborn or child, and is very calming for the parent as well.

5 out of 5 stars Love this!.......2007-06-23

The music is calming and beautiful. It really grows on you. Easy for mom to sing a long to and baby loves it!

5 out of 5 stars Love this CD!.......2007-06-08

This is our thrid copy of this CD. The first was lent to us when our baby was born. We loved it so much we bought our own copy, so we wouldn't wear out our friend's copy. Then we decided we needed a copy for the car as well as our baby's room. She falls asleep to it every night now. The only problem is it's a little too short to get through rocking and then our baby falling asleep. Sometimes I have to come back into her room to play it again.

5 out of 5 stars Best lullaby CD -- get this.......2007-05-08

Everyone needs a signature lullaby CD that you will forever relate to some of the best years, I hope, of your life. This one is it and it's so good that it applies to all three of my children, even after nearly daily listening...

Album Description

Montana-born, honey-voiced singer Nicolette Larson headed west in 1974 and quickly became a member of the '70s California rock scene. She sang backup with Hoyt Axton and Commander Cody, did sessions with Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, and Neil Young, and landed a solo deal with Warner Bros., which, in late 1978, released her first single, "Lotta Love" (penned by her mentor Young). It went Top 10, spurred her debut album Nicolette to gold, and launched a promising career. She cut four albums for Warner Bros. and guested on records by others ranging from the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band to Van Halen. In Nashville, Larson starred in the musical Pump Boys And Dinettes and cut the album Say When, proving she was adept at country too. Sadly, Nicolette passed away in December 1997 of complications arising from cerebral edema; she was just 45. Now Rhino is proud to bring you the only collection devoted to this underappreciated artist's best solo recordings, The Very Best Of Nicolette Larson. Featuring the hit singles and key tracks from her nine albums released on Warner Bros., MCA, and Sony Wonder, it also includes previously unreleased live versions of "French Waltz" and "Baby, Don't You Do It."

4 out of 5 stars gotta lotta love for her.......2007-05-01

i always buy a 'best of' cd for one or two songs. 'lotta love' is a pop-disco classic that momentarily eclipsed linda ronstadt as the pop female vocalist of the late 70 and early 80s. and it made a pop diva out of its vocalist nicolette larson, a former backgrounder for ronstadt. but there couldn't have been much love lost--ronstadt is in the background for this record.

and this one song garners three of these four stars from me. and french waltz and let me go love are the other star.

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure lost too soon.......2006-03-13

Nicolette Larson's music evolved and matured over nearly three decades. It is a great loss and sadness that she passed away in her prime. This is a great introduction to those who are not familiar with her music and a nice compilation for those who know her.

5 out of 5 stars Revered by other singers.......2005-05-26

Nicolette never captured the public imagination as a solo singer despite having a superb voice and an outgoing personality. She was very popular with other singers, many of whom employed her as a backing singer on their records. You'll find her name in the credits of albums by Guy Clark, Commander Cody, Neil Young, Christopher Cross, Emmylou Harris, Neil Young, Rita Coolidge, Linda Ronstadt, John Stewart and many others.

Eventually, a record company gave her a recording contract and her first single (Lotta love - a Neil Young song) made the American top ten. It seemed that Nicolette was set for a long and glittering career but nothing else she ever did came close to matching the success of Lotta love.

Nicolette's second single (Rhumba girl - a Jesse Winchester song) became a minor American hit. One later single (Let me go love - a duet with Michael McDonald) made the American top forty. Among the failed singles was a cover of I only want to be with you, originally a hit for Dusty Springfield in the sixties. Nicolette's version is almost as good as Dusty's and far superior to many other versions I've heard. Nicolette never charted in Britain, but although some of her albums were released in the UK, I'm not sure that any effort was made to promote them.

Changing musical trends caused Nicolette to change directions. She recorded a couple of country albums (Say when, Rose of my heart). I never heard the first but I bought the second on vinyl and it's outstanding. It yielded a top ten country hit (That's how you know when love's right, a duet with Steve Wariner) but any hopes that Nicolette would establish herself as a country star faded. Nicolette eventually married and settled for motherhood, only rarely returning to the recording studio. A lullaby album marked the end of her career.

Nicolette died in her mid-forties following liver failure. She was not a prolific solo recording artist but this compilation is a fitting tribute to a brilliant singer.

5 out of 5 stars A Must have for any music library.......2003-12-08

An American treasure, this collection of Nicolette's work, a must have. We miss you.

5 out of 5 stars Nice collection of songs from the late singer.......2002-06-19

When I first heard "Lotta Love," I was working in a radio station. When we previewed this record )out of the stack of 30 or 40 vinyl 45s that used to come in every week), I told the music director: "This is going to be a hit." How sweet it was to be right.

She had other hits along the way, during a career not nearly as successful as I thought it should have been. "I Only Want To Be With You" was a fine cover, snd she made a brief appearance in the movie Twins singing, "I'd Die For This Dance."

The song that knocked me breathless was "Let Me Go, Love," a duet with Michael McDonald (of the Doobie Brothers). It's still a staple of soft-music stations.

Her musical styles were so varied, though, that she never really landed in one category long enough to become dominant. She sang many songs that were either country-flavored or outright country in nature.

Her body of work is well-represented in this collection of tunes. If you've never heard anything other than "Lotta Love," you owe it to yourself to try this superb CD.

1 out of 5 stars poor recording.......2007-04-30

Besides the bacground hiss, I found I had to turn the volume up to max just to hear it. So when you play more than one CD the others will be normal volume but when Kreisler starts you hear nothing and have to turn the volume all the way up to have it at low normal levels. So I recommend passing on this one.

5 out of 5 stars Travel to the Old Vienna.......2006-01-26

Sometimes the author isn`t the best performer of his own works. That`s not the case. I completely agree with the previous reviewer: yes, only Kreisler can play Kreisler.
While listening to this music you so wounderfully feel the spirit of the old Vienna, that most technically perfect record couldn`t compare with this impressions. Treat surface noise of the records made in 1912-1946 as the scent of that distant time (by the way, nearly the age gone) - and you would be completely satisfied, because the playing by Kreisler is so scincere and soulful. So if you like Kreisler - don`t think twice. This is CD for you.

5 out of 5 stars Only Kreisler Can Play Kreisler *****.......2005-05-08

What can I say? Only Kreisler can play Kreisler. Get a discography of Fritz Kreisler and start hunting down everything you can find by this man. You can compare violinists; Heifetz has astounding technique, Milstein's always wonderful, Oistrakh is a favorite of many, Kogan can play anything, etc., etc., etc.. But Kreisler... is a unique personality of the violin. Yehudi Menuhin said of him in his autobiography, there are many great violinists with perhaps greater technique in this area or that; but "Kreisler mystifies me." Bruno Walter, the great conductor, said of Kreisler, "He did not play the violin; he BECAME the violin." and this is true. There is something special about Kreisler that transcends violin playing itself. Something heavenly is communicated by him with his instrument. Transfers from old disks are always of varying quality. Kreisler lived a long time ago and recording techniques were very primitive; but Kreisler even seems to rise above the pops and the clicks. Other artists are drowned out by them but Kreisler soars above them and makes one forget they are there. You're focused on the beauty and the background noise seems to disappear entirely. Other violinists have tried
to play Kreisler and perhaps get the notes right, most notably among them, Zino Francescatti (who plays Kreisler better than any other man except Kreisler), but only Kreisler can play Kreisler.
If you want to hear it best, put up with the background hiss. It's worth it. If you want a modern recording, see if you can find Francescatti's tribute album to Fritz Kreisler. it's OOP, but an LP in mint condition sometimes appears on an online auction service. Why the Francescatti album ever went OOP I do not know. He is the only modern violinist that ever really tapped into the soul of 'Fritz' when he plays Kreisler. If the disk is ever again released, snap it up before it goes OOP again. In the final analysis, modern violinists, at most, will give you a representative selection of only about 16 tracks and usually you get the worn chestnuts over and over again. Enough of Kreislers own recordings are still available that you can still get the whole gamut of his discography if you just look. Do so!

5 out of 5 stars Perfection.......2004-03-08

No crap...really? OF COURSE THIS RECORDING IS A TRANSFER! YOU THINK THEY HAVE DIGITAL RECORDING TECHNOLOGY BACK THEN???? Man, that review from Delaware annoys me.

Go with the first review. This recording is a must. It is one of the great violin recordings. Even my old violin teacher advise me to play some of Kreisler stuff to improve techniques. Kreisler is a legend. Lesson and appreciate the beauties of the violin.

2 out of 5 stars disappointing technical quality.......2000-08-29

I realize that this cd was a transfer, but I have other music that was transferred from old recordings, and they sound much better than this. The disappointing technical quality of the sound on this CD disturbs me. In fact, it sounds worse than the vinyl I already own. Very loud hissing, some popping. The music doesn't actually sound like it's been recorded in a tunnel, but the sound is not as full as I had hoped.

On the other hand, I bought this after comparing Kreisler's performance with Joshua Bell on the samples; and I find I always prefer Kreisler. With no disrespect to Mr. Bell, I find I prefer the composer performing his own music.

5 out of 5 stars To Nicolette, With Love.......2007-03-18

In 1979, a brilliant career in pop music seemed inevitable for Nicolette Larson. Her debut album showed that she was a versatile young vocalist, full of promise. From it came the big hit, "Lotta Love", which received a "lotta" airplay (Still does!). She was nominated as Best New Artist by The Grammys. After that, I stopped hearing about her. I never knew why, because at that time there was no Internet nor even MTV or VH1 to keep us updated on what artists were doing. But I loved her album, and I continued to play it now and then all thru the 80's and early 90's. Now I've bought it again, on CD. When she recorded this album, Nicolette seized the opportunity to show the world what she could do. She excels in a variety of musical settings that I would sum up collectively as a hybrid of the styles of Carole King and Linda Ronstadt. She is sassy and earthy in "Rhumba Girl", but sweet and happy in "You Send Me". "Mexican Divorce" has Latin rhythms mixed with country sounds, and country is in full force in "Angels Rejoiced" and "Come Early Mornin". She is effective with a heavier rock sound in "Can't Get Away From You", and the rock is funkified in "Baby, Don't You Do It". And she is at her very best in the soft rock ballads "Give A Little" and "Last In Love", AND, saving the best for last, "French Waltz". The chorus of this track is in French, and Nicolette handles it beautifully. The entire album is very well produced; the sound is excellent throughout. I had forgotten just how good it was until today when I played the CD, after not hearing my old LP for a good while.

In 1997, I heard that Nicolette had passed away. I still don't know why her career stalled when it did, but I am hopeful that it was for a positive reason, such as a decision to devote her time to her family. Whatever the case may be, Nicolette, I thank you for the "lotta love" that goes on and on due to your beautiful recordings. As far as I'm concerned, you did attain superstardom!

5 out of 5 stars Long-awaited CD re-issue.......2007-02-05

Nicolette Larson was a talented, nuanced vocalist who is greatly missed. Her debut recording was a winner. Released in 1978, the album was an eclectic mix of songs from a diverse group of songwriters: Neil Young, Jesse Winchester, Holland-Dozier-Holland, Burt Bacharach, and Sam Cooke, among others. Out of all of Nicolette's albums, this was always the most accessible to me.

I always maintained that the mix of "Lotta Love" broadcast on AM radio during its chart run was different than the album and single releases (which are the same). I remember a slightly-slowered tempo on the radio mix. I never could substantiate this, though, but that's how I remember it.

My two favorite songs on the disc are Nicolette's interpretations of Adam Mitchell's "French Waltz," which is beautiful, and Bob McDill's "Come Early Morning," which foreshadowed her move to country music a decade later.

5 out of 5 stars I remember this one...........2006-10-24

Hard to believe it's been almost 30 years since this record/8-track/cassette came out, and I've been trying to find the CD for a few years now. The good news is that it sounds better than ever and I am reminded what a tragic loss it was when Nicolette Larson left this world. What I like about this CD is that the arrangements are tight, it has good sonic clarity and Nicolette gives us a wide variety of styles -- from the playful 'Rhumba Girl' to the pensive 'Last In Love'.

Add this gem to your colletion.

5 out of 5 stars Nicolette.......2006-07-07

I've been looking in the stores for years to get Nicolette's music on CD. Silly me...shoulda looked on Amazon.com first! She is an artist, like so many others, who isn't/wasn't as commercially successful as she deserved to be. RIP, Nicolette...

5 out of 5 stars Versatility does not equal Identity Crisis!.......2005-06-30

Nicolette Larson was an artist that really connected with people.
The first time I heard "Lotta Love" I was smitten, but the tongue-in-cheek "Rhumba Girl" had me hooked for life. This was one of my favorite albums when I was in high school. I would never have admitted to liking country back then, but "Angels Rejoiced" is so engaging that it defies genre. Although I'm Danish-American, I am also a bit of a Francophile and had just begun studying French when this album came out, so I was thrilled that a pop/country singer would do a song in French! "French Waltz", therefore, has always been an album highlight for me.

Nicolette has been raked over the coals for her versatility. On this stellar solo debut, Nicolette sang pop like a pop singer, country like a country singer and rock like a rock singer.
...anyone heard of Linda Ronstadt or Buffy Sainte-Marie?
My point is that this debut should have come as a surprise to no one. By the time this album came out, Nicolette had extensive backing vocal credits on Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton and Neil Young albums, to name a few. Nicolette had already proven what a gifted and versatile vocalist she was and was known as a singer's singer. Her pure soprano voice had an accessible quality that few in the business could equal. The only ones that come to mind (with that quality) are Anne Dorthe Michelsen of Denmark and Patrice Rushen.

If your taste leans more to the pop side of Nicolette, (Lotta Love, You Send Me) you should also get my personal favorite, her second album "In the Nick of Time". If you really appreciate the variety on "Nicolette", you might also enjoy Buffy Sainte-Marie's album "She Used to Wanna Be a Ballerina", which includes several tracks with Neil Young's band Crazy Horse and songs in French and Spanish.

Nicolette's CDs were long out of print, so get them while you can!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful music.......2007-05-29

For more years than I can remember, I've been listening to a cassette tape version of this recording, which I taped from an 8-track tape, complete with channel-switching gaps in songs and so much hiss it sounds like it was recorded by a waterfall. I am overjoyed to find this album now available on CD. It's one of my all-time favorites! Between this and her first recording, you've got a LOT of good, timeless music!

5 out of 5 stars Best find.......2006-03-21

I had been looking and requesting this from the various music shops, but was unable to locate this or even get this ordered, I loved it as an album and love it as my newly found CD.

5 out of 5 stars Endearing from Beginning to End.......2005-06-23

This album means enough to fans that some reviewers seem to have written Masters theses about it.

Obviously, her self titled debut is what made most of us fans, but the variety and delivery on In the Nick of Time really showed how Nicolette had staying power.

Dancin' Jones puts a smile on my face every time I hear it, setting a mood that makes it hard to leave before the entire album has played. The highlight for me though, is Rio De Janeiro Blue, which was also recorded by Randy Crawford, among others.

The album photography shows a more sophisticated side of Nicolette than what we saw on her first and later albums. I mention this only because it reflects the subtle change in style on the CD, and really shows what a lovely lady she was.

I have no affiliation with the military and have no children but I can't help but admire how she did the USO tours back then and released the childrens' album.

I hope buyers will enjoy In the Nick of Time at least half as much as I do. I consider it my favorite of her albums, with the debut coming in a close second.

5 out of 5 stars An Album For Flavor.......2005-04-09

I'm so happy that they decided to re-release the long out-of-print works of Nicolette. I bought the CD version of this for over 50 dollars on e-bay and at that time, it was a steal.

Despite what some other reviewers said about Nicolette's style changing with this album, I don't see it. Nicolette started out as one of the "troubadours" of the 70's, mixing folk-rock with practically every style there was. She didn't define her style until she went full-blown country with her final 2 albums of the 80's. During the time periods before that, she played with all kinds of musical tastes, as evident on this release.

This album has its high points in the bugle-boy-esque "Daddy", the hit duet "Let Me Go Love" and the fan favorite and often overlooked "Fallen".

4 out of 5 stars Nicolette's 2nd LP Very Different from First,, Still Good.......2005-03-09

Right on the heels of her phenomenal first LP ["Nicolette"], and on the heels of the final single from that album ["Give a Little"], Warners released in the fall of 1979 "In the Nick of Time," Nicolette Larson's second LP in less than two years.

Although it would be hard to repeat the success of the first LP, "In the Nick of Time" is a totally different LP in style, content and vocals, and at first disappoints because its pure-pop sounds were so far astray of the wonderful mix of musical genres that made "Nicolette" a classic of sorts.

Once you get over the fact that Nicolette's 2nd LP is not anything like her first LP, though, you can appreciate "In the Nick of Time" for what it does have to offer, which is a consistent and masterful pop sound from start to finish. The ballad "Let Me Go, Love" finally returned Nicolette to the top 40, but it wasn't for long [the single peaked at about number 35 and stayed on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles for about 10 weeks or so back in 1979]; unfortunately, "Let Me Go, Love" wasn't the magic bullet that "Nicolette's" monster single "Lotta Love" was, and sales of the initially promising and fast-rising second LP "In the Nick of Time," stalled: whereas her debut LP "Nicolette" went gold, selling over a half-million copies, staying on the album charts for over 6 months [a real wonder for a new artist back then, especially a female artist] and producing four Hot 100 singles, the followup LP "In the Nick of Time" barely made a dent on any of the charts and only yielded one rather forgettable single release.

Still, commercial success or not, "Nick of Time" contains some of Nicolette's most memorable tunes: the bouncing, dance-floor-accessible "Dancin' Jones" [and there really should have been a remix of this song]; the bubble-gummish "Breaking Too Many Hearts"; the smooth sounds of ballads "Let Me Go, Love" and "Fallen"; and the quirky but ultimately fun closing ballad, "Trouble." Nicolette's covers of "Daddy," "Rio de Janeiro Blue" and the Motown classic "Back in My Arms" are all noteworthy, too, and much like her gal-pal and sometimes-mentor, Linda Ronstadt, Nicolette demonstrated once more in LP#2 that she was very skillful at making any song her own.

It's still unclear to me why "Nick of Time" deviated so much from "Nicolette" in song selection, why the second LP didn't contain any country or rock selections, which were a big part of the charm of the first LP, but maybe what critics praised about the first LP [its eclectic stylings and weaving in and out of many musical genres] is what made buyers beware in future Nicolette LPs, and maybe Warners second-guessed and betted on a public that would be more responsive to a pure pop LP, something with as few twists and surprises as possible.

Whatever the case may be, "In the Nick of Time" is a solid LP, very different from freshman "Nicolette," but after a few listens, different in a good way. The only weak cut on the second LP [and the first LP had no weak tracks] is the pseudo-rocker title tune, but even that song kind of grows on you after a while. All in all, "In the Nick of Time" delivered a fine, albeit sometimes very slick, pop package, and was far from the throw-away efforts of most artists' sophomore efforts. It had a very brief time in the sun, for sure, but "In the Nick of Time," whether you were a Nicolette fan or not, stayed in your head and on your turntable long after it exited the Billboard charts. It's a fun album, filled with some great pop songs.

3 out of 5 stars Where to find more music by the "No Government" singer.......2005-09-23

To the reviewer who said you'll look in vain for other music by her: not so (if you work at it). She did an album before this and (by 2005) two albums after. And appeared on other albums.

You can get the original, rawer, drum n' bass version of the song "No Government" from the ablum "Now is Early" and several compilations several places, but this album's version is the best one unless you like drum n' bass, and the vocal here is smoother and more "produced".

Lots of Nicolette's music other places has very nice vocals, but the jarring high and varying tempo music with complicated beats behind her voice are distracting unless you ike that sort of thing.

For people who like "No Government" and who don't like fast drum and bass beats with their smooth singing, you've pretty much limited to the songs she sang on Massive Attack's albums. Start with "Three" on the album "Protection".

4 out of 5 stars Good Elfman Tracks.......2005-07-27

I have to warn everbody, you would be much better off buying the original Elfman score, and not buying this version.

However, this CD is the one I got stuck with, and there are a few 5 star songs on the 3 star CD.

First of all, Main Theme, this is a great Techno/Remix version of the Mission Impossible Theme, definately a keeper.

Second, Impossible Mission, is a great, funky militaristic track. It features some cool synth, sweet percussion, and a very cool, atmospheric sounds.

Third, Claire. This is without a doubt one of the top five saddest most beautiful songs ever put on plastic. It rates as the best song on the album, an Elfman classic in the tradition of his Burton scores.

Fourth, Trouble, this is an awesome action song that reminds one of Men In Black. The strange whistling, percussion, brass, and trembling strings really pull you in to the action.

Fifth/Mission Accomplished, this is yet another main theme remix, very listenable, but not as good as the rest.

As for the rest of the album, don't even bother with it.

    4 out of 5 stars Mission Accomplished!.......2004-07-01

I liked the movie and the Mission: Impossible theme song so much that when I found this recording in the library while ostensibly doing research for a project, I grabbed it right away and popped it into my CD player. Here is my song-by-song breakdown:
Mission: Impossible Theme: CLASSIC. WONDERFFUL. Just as good as (if not even better than) the beloved "James Bond Theme."
Spying Glass: A weird and wonderful song from Massive Attack. It's wonderful if you're just chilling out, especially after a long, hard day. (Unless you're one of those people who need to burn energy to blow off steam; it is kind of hard to dance to and completely out of place with sports.)
I Spy: This song and its theme of cold-blooded revenge sent shivers down my spine. I liked that. If you don't like your music unsettling, skip this track.
Impossible Mission: Score track. Good, but not a standout.
Headphones: I liked it, as it was soft, ethereal, and, well, I happen to like Bjork.
Weak: Alanis Morissette-style rocky relationship rock with decent vocals. (In case you hadn't noticed, unless she sings softly, Ms. Morissette sings like a dying cat. No offense to her fans, of course.)
On And On: I can't be a fair judge of this one. I can't sit through the uber-mellow intro and I hate having to fast forward.
Claire: A hauntingly pretty score piece.
Dreams: A very nice song if you have, unlike me, heard it less than fifty trillion times.
You, Me, and World War III: A very interesting song. I am not sure what it is about, but it fascinates me enough to listen to it again and again.
So: Maybe I'm a sap, but I like hearing about "some kind of tenderness in your laughter."
Trouble: Wonderfully dramatic score piece. Sort of a mash-up between ordinary spy music and Darth Vader's theme song.
No Government: A spacy, trancy song with tantalizing vocals and even more tantalizing ideals.
Alright: Pretty decent rock song, if awfully generic.
Mission Accomplished: Sort of like a really good remix of the original theme song.
Since there are so many different points of view around, I can't say "this CD is a gift from the heavens" or "this CD sucks like a vacuum cleaner" conclusively. All I will say is what I think: if the soundtrack was meant to be a good, solid collection of great songs, they accomplished their mission!

1 out of 5 stars STOP! This is NOT what you are looking for........2004-06-25

This CD has a handful of the most horrid attrocities ever attemped to be called "music" that I have ever had the unfortunate priveledge of listening to. The first time I saw this movie, I was very young and enjoyed the soundtrack. I recieved the cd as a gift. THIS IS NOT THE MISSION IMPOSSIBLE SOUNDTRACK. It is Music from (COUGH like 3 songs COUGH) and music "inspired by" the film. Now incase you are wondering what kind of music this movie would be likely to "inspire" stop yourself right there and let me tell you the answer. GARBAGE. There is music on this cd that's so mind curdlingly horrid that it makes you want to take two pencils, stick them up your nose, and slam your head down on the desk.(!!!!) It's that bad. Get the REAL soundtrack. I hope you enjoyed my warning, now I have to pull these pencils out of my brain cavity.

    5 out of 5 stars A great surprise.......2004-02-25

I think this CD was the first I ever owned. When I first got it, I listened to the theme music and skipped most of the rest. Years later, when I pulled it out and listened to the whole thing, I realized what I had been missing, and went out to find more music by these artists.

The two versions of the M:I theme are great--one is right from the movie and the other is an electronic version. Both are way, way better than the new theme from M:I-2. Then there's a neat, stylish song from Massive Attack. Pulp's "I Spy" is a passionate anthem about revenge--turn up the volume and shout along. Danny Elfman does three other instrumental tracks on the album: "Impossible Mission" is suspenseful but subdued, with lots of interesting percussion; "Claire" is slow and haunting; and "Trouble" is as exciting as all-get-out. Bjork's "Headphones" is still one of my favorites, and the strangest song on the album, really quiet and dreamy. "Weak" is a decent rock song, and "On and On" is sad and mellow rock. If you haven't heard "Dreams" before--well, of course you've heard it before, but it's still one of the best songs ever. Two more great songs are "No Government", with its mysterious vocals and catchy groove, and "Alright", which will raise anyone's spirits.

I don't know what business a lot of this music had appearing in a Mission: Impossible soundtrack, but it works. Go out and buy it today!

5 out of 5 stars You'll Get A Lotta Love To Get You Thru This Tribute.......2006-03-21

Nicolette is known by the vast public for that one song written by Neil Young. But what a cover! It still blasts from the radio as stong as the day it was released.
A heartfelt, almost perfect tribute with the artists who worked with and loved her. Almost perfect because I didn't think Margaritaville was a good choice for Jimmy Buffett (and I'm a diehard Parrothead!) I would have liked 'La Vie Danssante' or even a shot at 'Rhumba Girl'. Just a thought. Everyone is in fine form. Turn off 'American Idol', listen to this CD and see how its done.
Footnote: Neil Young performs 'Lotta Love' in his concert movie "Heart Of Gold" and does it for 'Nick'.

5 out of 5 stars On great form.......2006-03-20

Everyone on this album is on great form and it's worth buying for Bonnie Raitt doing Love has no Pride which might just break your heart! Another stand out is CSN doing The Beatles In My Life. If you like these kind of artists then buy this album: you can't go wrong!!

4 out of 5 stars A LOT TO LOVE AND A LOT LEFT OUT.......2006-02-22

I attended both nights of concerts honoring the life and music of the late Nicolette Larson at Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in February of 1998. The first night, I'd bought a ticket to the sold-out show from a scalper and enthralled, I watched the show from the tenth row. The second night, a member of the house band gave me a laminated all access pass and, enraptured (not hyperbole), I watched from the wings of the stage. A live release of the event had been long rumored, but after so many years had lapsed, I'd long since given up hope of ever seeing any keepsake of these wonderful performances surface, save for the roll of photos I snapped, the bootleg cassette that some rabid queen from Long Beach mailed to me later on, and the backstage stories I duly diarized when I got home that night. (It's not everyday that Mary Kay Place walks in on me when I'm standing at a urinal.) So at long last - arriving on Valentine's Day, no less - Nicolette is getting her due. This set boasts mainly the big hits - e.g., Ronstadt & Blue Bayou, Browne & Running on Empty, Buffett & Margaritaville (would have thought Come Monday a more appropriate choice, given the circumstances). But take it from one who was there: to pare down to a single disc, hard decisions had to be made and more magical moments somehow ended up on the cutting room floor, such as Ronstadt's spine-tingling take on Jimmy Webb's Adios, which mystifies me not just because it was vocal perfection (despite her onstage disclaimer that it was past her bedtime) but because its sentiment reflected the evening's most fitting tribute to her friend, former roommate, and singing sister. Emmylou Harris, who only appeared on the second of the two evenings, gave a brief dedication to Nicolette explaining why she selected Even Cowgirls Get the Blues, but that too was sadly omitted. Larson is remembered most for her biggest hit, Lotta Love, on which Carole King, Bonnie Raitt, and the astonishingly good Valerie Carter & Rosemary Butler trade off verses. [By the way, don't believe the liner notes: unless they were overdubbed later, Mary Kay Place, Linda Ronstadt & Emmylou Harris do NOT sing on this track; diva-licious Ronstadt arrived at the SaMo Civic exactly at intermission, went onstage to do her three numbers in the second half and grudgingly stuck around for the ensemble finale of You've Got a Friend, after which she immediately BOLTED the premises. Notice that she is the only artist absent in the group photo.] Bonnie Raitt's Love Has No Pride (wow!) contextualizes the live disc, reminding us of the relevance of the two evenings' worth of concerts, as do Jackson Browne's acoustic For a Dancer and Crosby, Stills & Nash's cover of In My Life & Dan Fogelberg's Part of the Plan, a much more profound song than the ditty I remembered. So there is a lot to love, but a lot left out, and a long time to wait

SERVING SUGGESTION: Nicolette Larson Live At The Roxy from 1979 (released by Rhino Handmade in a pressing limited to 5,000 copies)

5 out of 5 stars A "Lotta Love" In The Room.......2006-02-19

Though she may not necessarily have been considered a superstar, Nicolette Larson was a singer who had a lot of big-name friends whom she supported and who supported her. Her untimely passing in December 1997 at the age of 45, due to a cerebral edema, deeply affected that community of 70s/80s singer/songwriters who were close to her throughout her career and her life. A tribute was held in her memory at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium over a period of two nights in February 1998. Now, after eight years of various entanglements and haggling, the music of those two nights has been compiled onto this fine CD.

Emceed by Robert Hays, this tribute CD brings together many of Nicky's friends together--Carole King; Bonnie Raitt; Jackson Browne; Dan Fogelberg; Crosby, Stills, and Nash; Joe Walsh; Little Feat; Jimmy Buffett; Emmylou Harris; and Linda Ronstadt. All of them band together to do Nicky's big 1979 Neil Young-penned smash "Lotta Love" to start things off, and Carole's "You've Got A Friend" to wrap it all up. And in between, we get that whole Los Angeles-based music mafia doing their thing. Walsh (alias Mr. "Hey How Ya Dooin'") does his thing on "Rocky Mountain Way"; Buffett, the original Parrothead, does his 1977 classic "Margaritaville"; and Jackson gives us "Running On Empty" and the meditative "For A Dancer."

As tends to happen, of course, the women really stand out, with Bonnie doing an acoustic version of "Love Has No Pride", and Emmylou giving us "Even Cowgirls Get The Blues." But perhaps the biggest ovation of the night for any of the artists was that given to Nicky's fellow "road warrior" Linda, who had not been seen much in recent times due to health problems. Linda, who is the godmother to Nicky's daughter Elsie Mae, is featured here reprising her heartfelt 1977 classic "Blue Bayou" as a poignant tribute to her fallen friend.

Although it is a pity that these performances took eight long and grinding years to see their legitimate apperances on CD, it is nevertheless nice to have them now than not to have them at all. There was definitely a "lotta love" in the room for one of pop music's most underappreciated (by the public) artists, and it shows on this fabulous recording.

Fritz Kreisler, incomparable violinist and prolific composer, was the supreme interpreter of his own pieces; his recordings of them have cast a spell on generations of performers. Joshua Bell succumbed to it as a boy, but avoids the pitfall of trying to imitate Kreisler's style, putting his own stamp on both the original pieces and the so-called baroque arrangements, which Kreisler eventually admitted having written himself. The program, shrewdly chosen to display Kreisler's multifaceted versatility, includes stylized, graceful dances, dreamy reveries, outbursts of joy and passion, parodistic syncopation, and, of course, true Viennese character pieces. Bell's love of the music suffuses every note; he captures mood, character, and expression with flair and impeccable style. His playing, technically brilliant and tonally ravishing, has humor, wit, grace, elegance, and irresistible charm. Sentiment never becomes sentimentality; there is not a trace of schmalz or kitsch. The piano parts, with their sophisticated harmonies and skillful counterpoint, prove that Kreisler was a good composer as well as a fine pianist; Paul Coker plays them with just the right combination of rhythmic steadiness and idiomatic freedom. --Edith Eisler

5 out of 5 stars Joshua Bell Is Awesome.......2007-07-22

I heard Joshua Bell playing a Kreisler piece on my local classical radio station. I just had to hear more! He has a command of the violin & a deep affinity to the music of Kreisler. I have to admit I actually liked this recording of Bell playing Kreisler better than Kreisler playing Kreisler.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD!.......2007-02-03

This CD is just great! The pieces are beautiful and Bell's performance is impeccable yet soulful. This is indeed the best Kreisler CD one can find on the market.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful expression with a great spirit.......2005-10-21

One of the glories of living in Bloomington, Indiana, is that I am surrounded by world class music performance opportunities, and one of the occasional treats has been Joshua Bell, whose family lived in Bloomington during his youth; Bell frequently returns home to play in concerts.

This particular album was recorded in the mid-1990s, while Bell was exiting his 'child prodigy' stage and becoming a performer whose staying power was being rapidly confirmed. Bell is a technical genius, with playing that is nearly flawless and has great range of interpretation.

Fritz Kreisler is probably a name not known to many, but according to Bell, 'I consider Fritz Kreisler to have been the last in a long line of great violinst-composers, which stretches back as far as Tartini and Corelli.' Because of the insight the violinist virtuoso brings to composition, there is a special feel to the music, for the violinist composer knows what the instrument is capable of in terms of tone, spirit, and technical expertise.

Kreisler was born in Vienna in 1875, but spent much of his life and gained much of his experience in France, Germany, and America (where he eventually became a citizen). He used to play with his audiences by passing off his own compositions as new 'arrangements' of previously unknown Baroque and Classical pieces; of course, some colleagues in the music world knew the truth, but perhaps it was owing to Kreisler's modesty that he didn't want to offer too many of his own pieces in performances.

Joshua Bell continues to record and perform with power and style, but perhaps this album remains one the best of his performances. Recorded at the urging of Josef Gingold, his teacher and mentor (who did not live to see the production completed), it has a poignancy about it, as well as good-heartedness that comes through very clearly.

Bell is joined by pianist Paul Coker as a brilliant accompanist; the duo provide a powerful pair for the expression of Kreisler's music.

    5 out of 5 stars Briliant!!!.......2004-05-31

What can I say? Bell is probably the best of the young generation violinists these days. He brings so much charm to anything he does. Lush sound, yet light where need be... Such beautiful phrasing, so well ballanced. This recording can be heard again and again and again, even if the music itself is not terribly deep... I love it.

    5 out of 5 stars A connection of passion.......2004-02-19

After listening to disc after disc after disc of violin works, one finds oneself thinking, "Where has the passion gone for playing violin?" Yes, absolutely astounding recordings abound, but very few offer the true passion of putting the bow to the strings. Technique and "flawless" fingerings have reduced the modern virtuosi to mere composition puppets. They are all "perfect". It is truly a joy to hear a violinist passionate about his playing and that comes across very elatedly with Mr. Bell playing the pieces from Kreisler. Every track is played as though he honestly enjoys it! A superb recording from the student of Gingold.
