Nicolette Larson first came to public attention when she backed up Neil Young on his American Stars 'n Bars disc. She went on to duet with him on his much anticipated Comes a Time album, which was the genesis for Nicolette. Using an even wider-ranging style than friends Linda Ronstadt or Emmylou Harris, Larson hit it big right out of the starting gate with Young's "Lotta Love," a super Top Ten smash. From there, she broadens her approach to include a soulful "You Send Me," the Louvin Bros' "Angels Rejoiced," Motown's "Baby, Don't Do It," and a hard-rockin' "Can't Get Away From You." No matter which genre she aspired to, she seemed to have the chops to do a fine job. Nicolette was a surprise for many when it first came out and is still a pleasure to listen to today. After this, her first effort, the sky was the limit for Larson.-----------1. Lotta Love Young 3:12 2. Rhumba Girl Winchester 3:52 3. You Send Me Cooke 3:56 4. Can't Get Away from You 3:17 5. Listeners familiar with Nicolette Larson's early work as a vocalist with Commander Cody will know right away that this project comes from her smoother-edged solo career. She scored big-easy rock hits, after all, a cynic might add, so it makes sense that her first release of the 1990s (nine years separate this recording and its predecessor, Say When) would be softened by keyboard washes and muted rhythms. But there's a simple reason for this CD's quietude, its floating gentleness: Larson writes in the liner notes that she wrote the songs as she sat by her daughter Elsie May's hospital bed as her daughter recovered. The music had to be all gentle and nonintrusive, and that's how it comes across. This is a great disc to spin as you rock the newborn. Larson's voice peeks out exceptionally as she covers an unreleased Neil Young tune ("Barefoot Floors") and presents a tender reading of "I Bid You Goodnight." Persistently fine layers of accordion and bowed cello give the keyboard-laden environments surprising warmth. --Andrew BartlettCustomer Reviews:

Album Description
Montana-born, honey-voiced singer Nicolette Larson headed west in 1974 and quickly became a member of the '70s California rock scene. She sang backup with Hoyt Axton and Commander Cody, did sessions with Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, and Neil Young, and landed a solo deal with Warner Bros., which, in late 1978, released her first single, "Lotta Love" (penned by her mentor Young). It went Top 10, spurred her debut album Nicolette to gold, and launched a promising career. She cut four albums for Warner Bros. and guested on records by others ranging from the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band to Van Halen. In Nashville, Larson starred in the musical Pump Boys And Dinettes and cut the album Say When, proving she was adept at country too. Sadly, Nicolette passed away in December 1997 of complications arising from cerebral edema; she was just 45. Now Rhino is proud to bring you the only collection devoted to this underappreciated artist's best solo recordings, The Very Best Of Nicolette Larson. Featuring the hit singles and key tracks from her nine albums released on Warner Bros., MCA, and Sony Wonder, it also includes previously unreleased live versions of "French Waltz" and "Baby, Don't You Do It."Customer Reviews:

Revered by other singers.......2005-05-26
Eventually, a record company gave her a recording contract and her first single (Lotta love - a Neil Young song) made the American top ten. It seemed that Nicolette was set for a long and glittering career but nothing else she ever did came close to matching the success of Lotta love.
Nicolette's second single (Rhumba girl - a Jesse Winchester song) became a minor American hit. One later single (Let me go love - a duet with Michael McDonald) made the American top forty. Among the failed singles was a cover of I only want to be with you, originally a hit for Dusty Springfield in the sixties. Nicolette's version is almost as good as Dusty's and far superior to many other versions I've heard. Nicolette never charted in Britain, but although some of her albums were released in the UK, I'm not sure that any effort was made to promote them.
Changing musical trends caused Nicolette to change directions. She recorded a couple of country albums (Say when, Rose of my heart). I never heard the first but I bought the second on vinyl and it's outstanding. It yielded a top ten country hit (That's how you know when love's right, a duet with Steve Wariner) but any hopes that Nicolette would establish herself as a country star faded. Nicolette eventually married and settled for motherhood, only rarely returning to the recording studio. A lullaby album marked the end of her career.
Nicolette died in her mid-forties following liver failure. She was not a prolific solo recording artist but this compilation is a fitting tribute to a brilliant singer.
A Must have for any music library.......2003-12-08
Nice collection of songs from the late singer.......2002-06-19
She had other hits along the way, during a career not nearly as successful as I thought it should have been. "I Only Want To Be With You" was a fine cover, snd she made a brief appearance in the movie Twins singing, "I'd Die For This Dance."
The song that knocked me breathless was "Let Me Go, Love," a duet with Michael McDonald (of the Doobie Brothers). It's still a staple of soft-music stations.
Her musical styles were so varied, though, that she never really landed in one category long enough to become dominant. She sang many songs that were either country-flavored or outright country in nature.
Her body of work is well-represented in this collection of tunes. If you've never heard anything other than "Lotta Love," you owe it to yourself to try this superb CD.

Travel to the Old Vienna.......2006-01-26
While listening to this music you so wounderfully feel the spirit of the old Vienna, that most technically perfect record couldn`t compare with this impressions. Treat surface noise of the records made in 1912-1946 as the scent of that distant time (by the way, nearly the age gone) - and you would be completely satisfied, because the playing by Kreisler is so scincere and soulful. So if you like Kreisler - don`t think twice. This is CD for you.
Only Kreisler Can Play Kreisler *****.......2005-05-08
to play Kreisler and perhaps get the notes right, most notably among them, Zino Francescatti (who plays Kreisler better than any other man except Kreisler), but only Kreisler can play Kreisler.
If you want to hear it best, put up with the background hiss. It's worth it. If you want a modern recording, see if you can find Francescatti's tribute album to Fritz Kreisler. it's OOP, but an LP in mint condition sometimes appears on an online auction service. Why the Francescatti album ever went OOP I do not know. He is the only modern violinist that ever really tapped into the soul of 'Fritz' when he plays Kreisler. If the disk is ever again released, snap it up before it goes OOP again. In the final analysis, modern violinists, at most, will give you a representative selection of only about 16 tracks and usually you get the worn chestnuts over and over again. Enough of Kreislers own recordings are still available that you can still get the whole gamut of his discography if you just look. Do so!
Perfection.......2004-03-08
Go with the first review. This recording is a must. It is one of the great violin recordings. Even my old violin teacher advise me to play some of Kreisler stuff to improve techniques. Kreisler is a legend. Lesson and appreciate the beauties of the violin.
disappointing technical quality.......2000-08-29
On the other hand, I bought this after comparing Kreisler's performance with Joshua Bell on the samples; and I find I always prefer Kreisler. With no disrespect to Mr. Bell, I find I prefer the composer performing his own music.

To Nicolette, With Love.......2007-03-18
In 1997, I heard that Nicolette had passed away. I still don't know why her career stalled when it did, but I am hopeful that it was for a positive reason, such as a decision to devote her time to her family. Whatever the case may be, Nicolette, I thank you for the "lotta love" that goes on and on due to your beautiful recordings. As far as I'm concerned, you did attain superstardom!
Long-awaited CD re-issue.......2007-02-05
I always maintained that the mix of "Lotta Love" broadcast on AM radio during its chart run was different than the album and single releases (which are the same). I remember a slightly-slowered tempo on the radio mix. I never could substantiate this, though, but that's how I remember it.
My two favorite songs on the disc are Nicolette's interpretations of Adam Mitchell's "French Waltz," which is beautiful, and Bob McDill's "Come Early Morning," which foreshadowed her move to country music a decade later.

Versatility does not equal Identity Crisis!.......2005-06-30
The first time I heard "Lotta Love" I was smitten, but the tongue-in-cheek "Rhumba Girl" had me hooked for life. This was one of my favorite albums when I was in high school. I would never have admitted to liking country back then, but "Angels Rejoiced" is so engaging that it defies genre. Although I'm Danish-American, I am also a bit of a Francophile and had just begun studying French when this album came out, so I was thrilled that a pop/country singer would do a song in French! "French Waltz", therefore, has always been an album highlight for me.
Nicolette has been raked over the coals for her versatility. On this stellar solo debut, Nicolette sang pop like a pop singer, country like a country singer and rock like a rock singer.
...anyone heard of Linda Ronstadt or Buffy Sainte-Marie?
My point is that this debut should have come as a surprise to no one. By the time this album came out, Nicolette had extensive backing vocal credits on Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton and Neil Young albums, to name a few. Nicolette had already proven what a gifted and versatile vocalist she was and was known as a singer's singer. Her pure soprano voice had an accessible quality that few in the business could equal. The only ones that come to mind (with that quality) are Anne Dorthe Michelsen of Denmark and Patrice Rushen.
If your taste leans more to the pop side of Nicolette, (Lotta Love, You Send Me) you should also get my personal favorite, her second album "In the Nick of Time". If you really appreciate the variety on "Nicolette", you might also enjoy Buffy Sainte-Marie's album "She Used to Wanna Be a Ballerina", which includes several tracks with Neil Young's band Crazy Horse and songs in French and Spanish.
Nicolette's CDs were long out of print, so get them while you can!

Endearing from Beginning to End.......2005-06-23
Obviously, her self titled debut is what made most of us fans, but the variety and delivery on In the Nick of Time really showed how Nicolette had staying power.
Dancin' Jones puts a smile on my face every time I hear it, setting a mood that makes it hard to leave before the entire album has played. The highlight for me though, is Rio De Janeiro Blue, which was also recorded by Randy Crawford, among others.
The album photography shows a more sophisticated side of Nicolette than what we saw on her first and later albums. I mention this only because it reflects the subtle change in style on the CD, and really shows what a lovely lady she was.
I have no affiliation with the military and have no children but I can't help but admire how she did the USO tours back then and released the childrens' album.
I hope buyers will enjoy In the Nick of Time at least half as much as I do. I consider it my favorite of her albums, with the debut coming in a close second.
An Album For Flavor.......2005-04-09
Despite what some other reviewers said about Nicolette's style changing with this album, I don't see it. Nicolette started out as one of the "troubadours" of the 70's, mixing folk-rock with practically every style there was. She didn't define her style until she went full-blown country with her final 2 albums of the 80's. During the time periods before that, she played with all kinds of musical tastes, as evident on this release.
This album has its high points in the bugle-boy-esque "Daddy", the hit duet "Let Me Go Love" and the fan favorite and often overlooked "Fallen".
Nicolette's 2nd LP Very Different from First,, Still Good.......2005-03-09
Although it would be hard to repeat the success of the first LP, "In the Nick of Time" is a totally different LP in style, content and vocals, and at first disappoints because its pure-pop sounds were so far astray of the wonderful mix of musical genres that made "Nicolette" a classic of sorts.
Once you get over the fact that Nicolette's 2nd LP is not anything like her first LP, though, you can appreciate "In the Nick of Time" for what it does have to offer, which is a consistent and masterful pop sound from start to finish. The ballad "Let Me Go, Love" finally returned Nicolette to the top 40, but it wasn't for long [the single peaked at about number 35 and stayed on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles for about 10 weeks or so back in 1979]; unfortunately, "Let Me Go, Love" wasn't the magic bullet that "Nicolette's" monster single "Lotta Love" was, and sales of the initially promising and fast-rising second LP "In the Nick of Time," stalled: whereas her debut LP "Nicolette" went gold, selling over a half-million copies, staying on the album charts for over 6 months [a real wonder for a new artist back then, especially a female artist] and producing four Hot 100 singles, the followup LP "In the Nick of Time" barely made a dent on any of the charts and only yielded one rather forgettable single release.
Still, commercial success or not, "Nick of Time" contains some of Nicolette's most memorable tunes: the bouncing, dance-floor-accessible "Dancin' Jones" [and there really should have been a remix of this song]; the bubble-gummish "Breaking Too Many Hearts"; the smooth sounds of ballads "Let Me Go, Love" and "Fallen"; and the quirky but ultimately fun closing ballad, "Trouble." Nicolette's covers of "Daddy," "Rio de Janeiro Blue" and the Motown classic "Back in My Arms" are all noteworthy, too, and much like her gal-pal and sometimes-mentor, Linda Ronstadt, Nicolette demonstrated once more in LP#2 that she was very skillful at making any song her own.
It's still unclear to me why "Nick of Time" deviated so much from "Nicolette" in song selection, why the second LP didn't contain any country or rock selections, which were a big part of the charm of the first LP, but maybe what critics praised about the first LP [its eclectic stylings and weaving in and out of many musical genres] is what made buyers beware in future Nicolette LPs, and maybe Warners second-guessed and betted on a public that would be more responsive to a pure pop LP, something with as few twists and surprises as possible.
Whatever the case may be, "In the Nick of Time" is a solid LP, very different from freshman "Nicolette," but after a few listens, different in a good way. The only weak cut on the second LP [and the first LP had no weak tracks] is the pseudo-rocker title tune, but even that song kind of grows on you after a while. All in all, "In the Nick of Time" delivered a fine, albeit sometimes very slick, pop package, and was far from the throw-away efforts of most artists' sophomore efforts. It had a very brief time in the sun, for sure, but "In the Nick of Time," whether you were a Nicolette fan or not, stayed in your head and on your turntable long after it exited the Billboard charts. It's a fun album, filled with some great pop songs.

Where to find more music by the "No Government" singer.......2005-09-23
You can get the original, rawer, drum n' bass version of the song "No Government" from the ablum "Now is Early" and several compilations several places, but this album's version is the best one unless you like drum n' bass, and the vocal here is smoother and more "produced".
Lots of Nicolette's music other places has very nice vocals, but the jarring high and varying tempo music with complicated beats behind her voice are distracting unless you ike that sort of thing.
For people who like "No Government" and who don't like fast drum and bass beats with their smooth singing, you've pretty much limited to the songs she sang on Massive Attack's albums. Start with "Three" on the album "Protection".
Good Elfman Tracks.......2005-07-27
However, this CD is the one I got stuck with, and there are a few 5 star songs on the 3 star CD.
First of all, Main Theme, this is a great Techno/Remix version of the Mission Impossible Theme, definately a keeper.
Second, Impossible Mission, is a great, funky militaristic track. It features some cool synth, sweet percussion, and a very cool, atmospheric sounds.
Third, Claire. This is without a doubt one of the top five saddest most beautiful songs ever put on plastic. It rates as the best song on the album, an Elfman classic in the tradition of his Burton scores.
Fourth, Trouble, this is an awesome action song that reminds one of Men In Black. The strange whistling, percussion, brass, and trembling strings really pull you in to the action.
Fifth/Mission Accomplished, this is yet another main theme remix, very listenable, but not as good as the rest.
As for the rest of the album, don't even bother with it.
Mission Accomplished!.......2004-07-01
Mission: Impossible Theme: CLASSIC. WONDERFFUL. Just as good as (if not even better than) the beloved "James Bond Theme."
Spying Glass: A weird and wonderful song from Massive Attack. It's wonderful if you're just chilling out, especially after a long, hard day. (Unless you're one of those people who need to burn energy to blow off steam; it is kind of hard to dance to and completely out of place with sports.)
I Spy: This song and its theme of cold-blooded revenge sent shivers down my spine. I liked that. If you don't like your music unsettling, skip this track.
Impossible Mission: Score track. Good, but not a standout.
Headphones: I liked it, as it was soft, ethereal, and, well, I happen to like Bjork.
Weak: Alanis Morissette-style rocky relationship rock with decent vocals. (In case you hadn't noticed, unless she sings softly, Ms. Morissette sings like a dying cat. No offense to her fans, of course.)
On And On: I can't be a fair judge of this one. I can't sit through the uber-mellow intro and I hate having to fast forward.
Claire: A hauntingly pretty score piece.
Dreams: A very nice song if you have, unlike me, heard it less than fifty trillion times.
You, Me, and World War III: A very interesting song. I am not sure what it is about, but it fascinates me enough to listen to it again and again.
So: Maybe I'm a sap, but I like hearing about "some kind of tenderness in your laughter."
Trouble: Wonderfully dramatic score piece. Sort of a mash-up between ordinary spy music and Darth Vader's theme song.
No Government: A spacy, trancy song with tantalizing vocals and even more tantalizing ideals.
Alright: Pretty decent rock song, if awfully generic.
Mission Accomplished: Sort of like a really good remix of the original theme song.
Since there are so many different points of view around, I can't say "this CD is a gift from the heavens" or "this CD sucks like a vacuum cleaner" conclusively. All I will say is what I think: if the soundtrack was meant to be a good, solid collection of great songs, they accomplished their mission!
STOP! This is NOT what you are looking for........2004-06-25
A great surprise.......2004-02-25
The two versions of the M:I theme are great--one is right from the movie and the other is an electronic version. Both are way, way better than the new theme from M:I-2. Then there's a neat, stylish song from Massive Attack. Pulp's "I Spy" is a passionate anthem about revenge--turn up the volume and shout along. Danny Elfman does three other instrumental tracks on the album: "Impossible Mission" is suspenseful but subdued, with lots of interesting percussion; "Claire" is slow and haunting; and "Trouble" is as exciting as all-get-out. Bjork's "Headphones" is still one of my favorites, and the strangest song on the album, really quiet and dreamy. "Weak" is a decent rock song, and "On and On" is sad and mellow rock. If you haven't heard "Dreams" before--well, of course you've heard it before, but it's still one of the best songs ever. Two more great songs are "No Government", with its mysterious vocals and catchy groove, and "Alright", which will raise anyone's spirits.
I don't know what business a lot of this music had appearing in a Mission: Impossible soundtrack, but it works. Go out and buy it today!

You'll Get A Lotta Love To Get You Thru This Tribute.......2006-03-21
A heartfelt, almost perfect tribute with the artists who worked with and loved her. Almost perfect because I didn't think Margaritaville was a good choice for Jimmy Buffett (and I'm a diehard Parrothead!) I would have liked 'La Vie Danssante' or even a shot at 'Rhumba Girl'. Just a thought. Everyone is in fine form. Turn off 'American Idol', listen to this CD and see how its done.
Footnote: Neil Young performs 'Lotta Love' in his concert movie "Heart Of Gold" and does it for 'Nick'.

A "Lotta Love" In The Room.......2006-02-19
Emceed by Robert Hays, this tribute CD brings together many of Nicky's friends together--Carole King; Bonnie Raitt; Jackson Browne; Dan Fogelberg; Crosby, Stills, and Nash; Joe Walsh; Little Feat; Jimmy Buffett; Emmylou Harris; and Linda Ronstadt. All of them band together to do Nicky's big 1979 Neil Young-penned smash "Lotta Love" to start things off, and Carole's "You've Got A Friend" to wrap it all up. And in between, we get that whole Los Angeles-based music mafia doing their thing. Walsh (alias Mr. "Hey How Ya Dooin'") does his thing on "Rocky Mountain Way"; Buffett, the original Parrothead, does his 1977 classic "Margaritaville"; and Jackson gives us "Running On Empty" and the meditative "For A Dancer."
As tends to happen, of course, the women really stand out, with Bonnie doing an acoustic version of "Love Has No Pride", and Emmylou giving us "Even Cowgirls Get The Blues." But perhaps the biggest ovation of the night for any of the artists was that given to Nicky's fellow "road warrior" Linda, who had not been seen much in recent times due to health problems. Linda, who is the godmother to Nicky's daughter Elsie Mae, is featured here reprising her heartfelt 1977 classic "Blue Bayou" as a poignant tribute to her fallen friend.
Although it is a pity that these performances took eight long and grinding years to see their legitimate apperances on CD, it is nevertheless nice to have them now than not to have them at all. There was definitely a "lotta love" in the room for one of pop music's most underappreciated (by the public) artists, and it shows on this fabulous recording.

Fritz Kreisler, incomparable violinist and prolific composer, was the supreme interpreter of his own pieces; his recordings of them have cast a spell on generations of performers. Joshua Bell succumbed to it as a boy, but avoids the pitfall of trying to imitate Kreisler's style, putting his own stamp on both the original pieces and the so-called baroque arrangements, which Kreisler eventually admitted having written himself. The program, shrewdly chosen to display Kreisler's multifaceted versatility, includes stylized, graceful dances, dreamy reveries, outbursts of joy and passion, parodistic syncopation, and, of course, true Viennese character pieces. Bell's love of the music suffuses every note; he captures mood, character, and expression with flair and impeccable style. His playing, technically brilliant and tonally ravishing, has humor, wit, grace, elegance, and irresistible charm. Sentiment never becomes sentimentality; there is not a trace of schmalz or kitsch. The piano parts, with their sophisticated harmonies and skillful counterpoint, prove that Kreisler was a good composer as well as a fine pianist; Paul Coker plays them with just the right combination of rhythmic steadiness and idiomatic freedom. --Edith EislerCustomer Reviews:

Powerful expression with a great spirit.......2005-10-21
This particular album was recorded in the mid-1990s, while Bell was exiting his 'child prodigy' stage and becoming a performer whose staying power was being rapidly confirmed. Bell is a technical genius, with playing that is nearly flawless and has great range of interpretation.
Fritz Kreisler is probably a name not known to many, but according to Bell, 'I consider Fritz Kreisler to have been the last in a long line of great violinst-composers, which stretches back as far as Tartini and Corelli.' Because of the insight the violinist virtuoso brings to composition, there is a special feel to the music, for the violinist composer knows what the instrument is capable of in terms of tone, spirit, and technical expertise.
Kreisler was born in Vienna in 1875, but spent much of his life and gained much of his experience in France, Germany, and America (where he eventually became a citizen). He used to play with his audiences by passing off his own compositions as new 'arrangements' of previously unknown Baroque and Classical pieces; of course, some colleagues in the music world knew the truth, but perhaps it was owing to Kreisler's modesty that he didn't want to offer too many of his own pieces in performances.
Joshua Bell continues to record and perform with power and style, but perhaps this album remains one the best of his performances. Recorded at the urging of Josef Gingold, his teacher and mentor (who did not live to see the production completed), it has a poignancy about it, as well as good-heartedness that comes through very clearly.
Bell is joined by pianist Paul Coker as a brilliant accompanist; the duo provide a powerful pair for the expression of Kreisler's music.
