Editorial Reviews
"Now I've traded my black feathers for a crown," sings Chris Robinson, and the vibrant, roaring music on Lions supports his claim to rule the jungle. Working with producer Don Was, the Robinson boys and crew make bold sonic leaps forward, sounding both heavier and more nuanced simultaneously. In the mid-1990s the Crowes' attempts at experimentation were much less successful, often sounding forced or, worse, underdeveloped. With 1999's By Your Side, the band seemed to make a conscious attempt to strip it all down and get back to basics. Lions continues that resurgence, and thanks to Was's influence, builds mightily on that foundation. The good-time swampy swagger is still the defining factor, but for the first time the sonic coloring enhances the tunes as opposed to sapping them of their energy. All the songs flow together, giving the album a cohesion that previous efforts have lacked, and Was generates a bold, vivid sound. And yes, it does seem quite conducive to loud volumes. --Marc Greilsamer

Album Description
This band redefines perceptions of Long Island's music scene with their British influenced contemporary indie rock sound. On their sophomore release, they harness the creativity of 70's album rock, the lush tones of ambient pop, and the subtle passion of groups such as The Smiths from the late '80s. Their music can easily be considered interpretive and progressive, yet it by no means alienates the fan base they've acquired through sharing bills with such acts as Mae, Acceptance, June, The Spill Canvas, The Receiving End Of Sirens, Copeland, and Coheed & Cambria.Customer Reviews:
Fantastic album - Superb live performers.......2007-07-09
Could be the album of 2006. Maybe........2007-02-14
This is art at its finest. Well orchestrated lyrics and song structure make this selftitled album standout amongst many other bands of the same genre. This album completely caught me by surprise. The only problem is, they may struggle trying to top this when working on their next full-length.
As Tall As Lions - Self Titled.......2006-12-29
Unless it's justified.
But As Tall As Lions, an indie band from Long Island, NY leaves nothing to chance with their second album, which shares the same name as the band.
And after hearing this, in the not so grand scale of today's music, this band should be taller than the majority of the faux lions out there.
Sure, a lot of their songs are built around love--be it lost, found, or never really there to begin with--and the bulk of their lyrics could have come from a melancholy teenager's notebook, and because of that some might pigeonhole them as emo, a distinction which is not only unfair, but nowadays a kiss of death. But nothing ever feels woe is me, even when it is. The melodies are ambient, at times atmospheric, even reminiscent of some Sigur Ros (though with words that you can actually understand). And As Tall As Lions sounds similar enough to Keane to mention it; but they're so much better, their sound deeper, and Daniel Nigro twice the singer.
Above everything the album is honest.
Beyond that it's littered with homerun after homerun. The opening track "Stab City" sets the ebb and flow of what's to follow, from "Song For Luna", a lovely ditty sounding every bit like a soundtrack to any wannabe protagonist who's wandered aimlessly through the mental streets of time gone by, to the closer "Maybe I'm Just Tired", a heartbreaking confessional where Nigro sings, "But I know I'm not good enough for you" like he means it.
From top to bottom there aren't anything even resembling fillers.
And somewhere in the middle of the album, from "Ghosts of York", to "Milk and Honey", to "I'm Kicking Myself" they manage a few masterpieces.
The album is outstanding, easily one of the best of 2006.
And though there aren't any streamers, fireworks, or larger than life billboards to promote its release, make no mistake this is As Tall As Lion's coming out party.

refined. I agree that this is a less poppier coldplay, a less morose Jeff Buckley. This is a great indie album, by far the best of the year so far in my opinion.

THE BLACK CROWES RELEASE A GOOD FOLLOW-UP ALBUM TO "BY YOUR SIDE." .......2007-03-14
THE BLACK CROWES have been sizzlin' red hot since the release of their most successful studio album to date, the "BY YOUR SIDE" album released in 1998. Their recent concert tour promoting this legendary album was extremely successful due to the sold out concerts consisting of diehard fans. To add to that, THE BLACK CROWES would record a blistering legendary historic live landmark album with one of their most favorite idol's ever, MR. JIMMY PAGE. The live album would be released as JIMMY PAGE & THE BLACK CROWES "LIVE AT THE GREEK" in 2000. This legendary historic concert would definitely add more to the legend and legacy of MR. JIMMY PAGE, LED ZEPPELIN and THE BLACK CROWES. Believe it or not, I purchased this live performance on a bootleg DVD and the picture and sound quality was excellent. I can only hope that this legendary concert will be released someday for the whole world to see and enjoy. In reality, THE BLACK CROWES were continuing to enjoy the fruits of the good life to its fullest excesses and live the Rock n' Roll lifestyle to its fullest potential. With this in mind, All was good and well in THE BLACK CROWES world which would be the perfect time and opportunity for Chris Robinson, Rich Robinson, Steve Gorman, Ed Harsch and Audley Freed to head back into the recording studio and record the highly anticipated follow-up album to the extremely successful "BY YOUR SIDE" album from 1998. Many Rock critics as well as all of the diehard CROWES fans were often wondering if THE CROWES could do it again and top the "BY YOUR SIDE" album since they were all aware that the "BY YOUR SIDE" album would be extremely hard to top. After a certain period of time, THE BLACK CROWES would emerge and evolve from the recording studio with a newly completed album and would hand it in to their V2 Records label. The newly finished product would be released as the "LIONS" album in 2001. In my opinion, "LIONS" does not measure up or compare to the "BY YOUR SIDE" album but it is not far off either. However, "LIONS" is really another great album that got stuck in the middle in having to follow and top an extraordinary album like "BY YOUR SIDE." Critics and fans really had high expectations and hopes of comparing "LIONS" to the Rockin' "BY YOUR SIDE" album. When you think about it, it is really unfair to say that the "LIONS" album is a bad album when truly it really isn't. In my opinion, "LIONS" is really another true testament of the genius and musical creativity of two extremely talented brothers and a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary band that was getting damn near close to being far ahead of their time.
And now it is time to let the music speak for itself and do all of the Rockin' and talkin'. "LIONS" would begin with the slow blistering killer Rocker "Midnight From The Inside Out," the merciless funkish hard Rocker Lickin'," the breathtaking Rocker "Come On," the slow weird Rocker "No Use Lying," the slow beautiful acoustic turned hard Rocker "Losing My Mind," the funkish soulful Rocker "Ozone Mama," the grounbreaking Rocker "Greasy Grass River," the soulful acoustic turned electric Rocker "Soul Singing," the beautiful slow soothing acoustic turned mild Rocker "Miracle To Me," which jumps into the smooth funkish Rocker "Young Man, Old Man," the slow acoustic southern Rocker turned blasting hard Rocker "Cosmic Friend," another slow acoustic turned Rocker "Cypress Tree" and the beautiful slow acoustic power Rocker "Lay It All On me." May I also add that Chris Robinson's blistering lead vocals were legendary and on the dot during the recording of this album. Chris' lead vocals really took the music to another level. Rich's and Audley's blistering merciless guitar licks and riffs were also legendary and took the music to another level.
Overall, this is one great album worth seeking further into and checking out especially if you are a devout BLACK CROWES collector or diehard fan. However, I do not recommend newcomers are new beginners to the sound and music of THE BLACK CROWES to purchase this album first before hearing all of the other CROWES previous albums first.
I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary album will definitely prove to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished by everyone for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This is one BLACK CROWES album that no devout BLACK CROWES collector or diehard would want to be without.
In closing, THE BLACK CROWES would again strike gold with the "LIONS" album and go out on tour to promote it. It would be during and after this tour that the Robinson brothers would have their legendary fights that would temporarily break the band up for many years. Chris Robinson would have his share of hardships and bad tribulations with his recent divorce from actress Kate Hudson. It would take this hardship to bring back together the Robinson brothers and do what we all know they were born on this earth to do which is perform. As I am speaking, THE BLACK CROWES are in the process of releasing their first new studio album in six long years in 2007. With that in mind, there will be new stories and tales in the continuing BLACK CROWES saga that will still need to be conquered, told and written in new pages and chapter's. But that, my fellow readers and reviewers as well as myself, we will all just have to stay tuned and hear and read further about at a later date. I can't wait for the new album to be released. HURRY UP GUYS, WE'RE ALL WAITING FOR YOU. Here's to you Chris, Rich, Steve, Ed and Audley. GO CROWES. Thanks for the great Rockin' memories with still more to come. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? Thanks for reading my review and I hope that you have all enjoyed reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. THE BLACK CROWES RULES. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.

Musical Bliss .......2006-03-07
Break Blossom- Great opener. Good guitar riff. Catchy, sing-along chorus. Great breakdown. Starts the album off with a bang.
96 Heartbeats- Good, steady drums. My least favorite track. Still good however.
Silhouettes/Silhouetting- Great vocals. Great instrumental breakdown, guitars are great.
The Carousel- Standout track. Pure musical bliss. Catchiest chorus ever written.
Acrobat- "Tonight pretend your an acrobat..." Amazing vocals. Starts off relaxing and gentle beforing building up into a breathtaking breakdown. Another standout track.
Why We Cry At Movies- Relaxing track, featuring a great drum beat and beautiful piano. Vocals are at its best here.
If I'm Not Out Burning- Another great guitar track. Faster pased. Great rock song.
My Morning Dreams- Atmospheric instrumental song. Spaced out and slow. Leads up to the next song.
A Ghost In Drag- My Morning Dreams builds up into this track. Great, great song. Good rock song with good guitars. Another standout.
Blowing Out A Wish- Melancholy song. Starts off slow and leads to a great breakdown. "Don't blame Jesus, he's courageous."
Goodnite, Noises Everywhere- The title describes the song well. Great album ender. Noises everywhere acuratly describes the atmospheric guitars and piano.
Please, please purchase this amazing album.
The Best CD of the Year That No Ones Knows About!!.......2005-01-31
Signed to the same label as Brand New, I have no doubt that these guys will rise to prominence among the indie crowd. It's only a matter of time until they take over the remainder of the decade. I recommend this CD to ANYONE, you can never consider yorself a serious music listener if you do not have this CD.
Possibly one of the best of the year!.......2004-11-26
A beautiful album.......2004-08-01
Lafcadio is an amazing album. Beautiful, sweeping, engrossing, and so much more, the songs on this album range from full guitar rock blasts to soft, subtle ventures into the air. These songs bring so much to the table. The sweeping, epic guitars steal the show here with well written and well played riffs. Piano is used and used well through out the album. The vocals are slightly odd but fit the music perfectly, bringing to mind the vocals of Brandtson.
The instrumental My Glowing Morning Dreams leads into A Ghost in Drag, brining to mind early Appleseed Cast (minus the Casts truly unique vocals). There is not a dud amongst these songs, each is strong in its own merits. Break Blossom, Why We Cry At Movies, My Glowing Morning Dreams and A Ghost in Drag are the standout tracks for me.
As Tall As Lions have created a beautiful album full of amazing songs that will sweep over you like a fall wind during the evening hours of October. Epic, heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time, Lafcadio is a glorious album.

One of Adrian Belew's better CD's........2006-12-15
Adrian Belew is an excellent, innovative and interesting performer/guitarist. He has added a lot to the groups he has played with, including Frank Zappa (in on of Zappa's best bands), King Crimson, David Bowie and the Talking Heads. But, his solo CD's have not always been great, with only a few good songs and some "unbearable" moments. However, this CD has a few great songs and nothing really bad.
He does two songs with David Bowie, Pretty Pink Rose and Gunman, which are both very good. Pretty Pink Rose is one of Belew's best songs of all time.
There are some other very good songs, like the funky, discordant I Am What I Am.
The CD has some songs that I would call filler. There is an unnecessary version of Heartbeat that he played with King Crimson. It is basically the same as the King Crimson version, but I don't think quite as good. Then there is a version of the Traveling Wilbury's Not Alone Anymore, where Belew tries to sound like Roy Orbison. He doesn't quite make it. Taken by themselves, these are pretty good songs and performances, but they aren't as good as the originals.
There are songs that are basic pop, like Looking For A UFO and Small World. They are horrible but are not the best things Belew has done.
All in all this is a fairly good CD throughout. My favorite is still his first, Lone Rhino.
Amazing!.......2005-09-26
Very good.......2005-08-02
"When great big cadillacs roamed the Earth".......2005-07-13
The album is all over the place, the common thread being Belew's monster guitar playing and fantastic songwriting-- from tribal churning ("Young Lions") to delicate pop "Looking For a U.F.O."), eco-conscious rock ("Men in Helicopters"), ballads ("Phone Call to the Moon") and duets with David Bowie (the explosive "Pretty Pink Rose") and some crazy radio guy ("I Am What I Am"), the album covers a lot of ground. The important thing is that, quite frankly, everything is really, REALLY good. Witty lyrics, clever arrangements, and phenomenal guitar.
This is the place to begin investigating Belew's catalog. If you're already listening and you don't have it, get ahold of this-- its essential material. Highly recommended.

Album Description
2007 release from this AOR band fronted by Toby Hitchcock and featuring the guitar playing and songwriting skills of Jim Peterik (Ides Of March/Survivor). This album, their third studio effort, sees the band return to the more melodic Hard Rock style of their debut album and Survivor's Vital Signs. Frontiers.Album Details
The Roaring of Dreams", Pride of Lions' Third Release is Possibly their Most Focused and Distinctive Album. In the Words of Main Songwriter, Guitarist/Vocalist/Ivory Tinkler Jim Peterik: "The Sound We've Established in the First Two CDs is Now Familiar to the Aor / Melodic Audience. With this Album We Strove to Emphasize all the Elements that We Are Best Noted For: Big Hooks, Soaring Melodies, Clever Modulations, Inspiring Messages, the Rock-solid Pride of Lions Band and of Course Toby Hitchcock's Amazing Range and Talent.Customer Reviews:
Disappointed.......2007-06-27
this band has arrived.......2007-05-09
Those complaints are gone. This, the third full-length album by Pride of Lions, delivers on this band's potential at last.
The songs, by Jim Peterik of Survivor fame, are much better than the old Survivor material, which was sappy and over-commercial most of the time. This stuff is far more mature; it uses the AOR pop-song template as a vehicle to express Peterik's spiritual yearnings, which are always positive and uplifting in nature. And no voice could capture this vision like Hitchcock's does here, as he has grown by leaps and bounds as a singer since the last album. It isn't anything technical, merely a newfound confidence in his emotional projection.
There are a couple of clankers on here, but they don't diminish this one enough to cause it to drop beneath the five stars I am giving it. Highly recommended to AOR/keyboardy hard rock fans.
Survivor Fan's Essential For Sure.......2007-03-22
Pride of Lions is a duo made up of ex-Survivor rock legend JIM PETERIK and young turk TOBY HITCHCOCK. Toby's amazing voice range made it possible for Jim Peterik to play the game again as passionate as when he was in Survivor and rock masterpieces followed in 2003 and 2004.
My first pick from the album is LANGUAGE OF THE HEART uptempo drivethrough pop rock song somewhat like movie theme songs by Kenny Loggins. During Survivor days uptempo songs are quite rare and most songs are in mid-tempo. Yet with Toby Hitchcock leading the vocal the duo could force out a bunch of up-tempo rockers the most impressive of which is BORN TO BELIEVE IN YOU from the previous album The Destiny Stone. Ballads are quite moving as well just take a few example from this album, LOVE'S ETERNAL HEART, and FAITHFUL HEART. And see-breeze light pop like SECRET OF THE WAY who may capture the heart of late 70s AOR fans who love AMBROSIA or SUPERTRAMP. And ASTONISH YOU stabilizes the soft appeal of the band. And that never betrays the avid melodic rock fans who love HOUSE OF LORDS or SUNSTORM albums. Top track HEAVEN ON EARTH just sap the current melodic rock scene.
Only listners who might get a bit bored might be the fans of previous two albums because this album is more like the summarization of the two rather than moving into the next adventure. 12th track TURNAROUND gives you a few surprises. A new talent, sister of Toby Hitchcock is revealed. She may well be melodic rock version of AMY LEE? A bright hope for the band.
Verdict: Mixes the element of previous two albums. Nothing new to old fans.
Rating: 91 out of 100
Recommnded for: Most suited for 80s rock fans who might have lost touch with the music they love most. Survivor and general 80s pop and rock fans.

Customer Reviews:
Forgive the cheesy title, but a star is re-born once again........2007-07-09
In all that mess, the soundtrack was released by Columbia on vinyl record in mono and has since never been out of print and was a best-seller for years. In 1988, Columbia took the musical numbers and the overture directly from the film's stereo soundtrack (As, sadly, stereo soundtrack masters no longer existed.) and released those onto CD. The sound quality was somewhat horrendous, but digital audio was still in its infancy and not much else could be done.
In 2004, for the film's 50th anniversary, Columbia, Legacy, and Sony Music Soundtrax released this incredible new expanded remastered CD reissue of the film's soundtrack. This is the most complete soundtrack you can find and it's definitely worth upgrading from your 1988 CD release.
This CD contains not only all of the songs, including an extended intro to The Man That Got Away which was shortened in the film as well as the complete intro to Gotta Have Me Go With You, but also contains a near complete release of the instrumental score, which includes whole tracks and parts of tracks that were not used in the film, as well as an alternate vocal take of It's A New World, the deleted When My Sugar Walks Down The Street segment from Born In A Trunk, and a static-y complete version of The Trinidad Coconut Oil Shampoo Commercial, which was taken from a worn acetate playback disc - the only complete recording in existence.
The soundtrack is taken from a mixing and matching of several elements, such as acetate playback discs, the original Columbia mono soundtrack album masters, and the film's 4-track stereo soundtrack, among others. This means that the soundtrack goes back and forth from being stereo and mono. However, this does not detract from my listening experience any, and frankly, I can't tell much of a difference. One interesting note is that Gotta Have Me Go With You uses both the film's soundtrack and the mono soundtrack album masters to create a faithful listening experience, from the mono instrumental intro to the song itself, which except for a short portion, is taken from the film's 4-channel soundtrack. (The mono portion of the vocal part was used to edit out some plot-related screams that were present in the 1988 release. This method of retaining the aural integrity of Gotta Have Me Go With You was also used when it was included on the Rhino Records compilation Judy Garland In Hollywood: Her Greatest Movie Hits.)
Despite the fact that this soundtrack is taken from several different surviving elements and sadly not from a single set of elements, as Warner Bros. didn't have the foresight to save everything like MGM and Disney did, this is an excellent presentation of this landmark soundtrack. The sound quality for the most part is excellent, and the liner notes are also wonderful. Garland historian John Fricke writes a small essay on the production of the film and an annotated guide to the soundtrack, which gives a synopsis of the plot and also indicates where the tracks from the CD appear in the film. Producer Didier C. Deutsch also writes a small essay on the creation of this CD release, giving notes on the elements and some specific tracks.
Amazon is offering this soundtrack at an excellent price, and I have to say, it's a bargain for a soundtrack of this caliber and sound quality. Any Garland fan or movie soundtrack fan should have this in their collection.
A Star Is Born Soundtrack Review.......2007-01-10
Judy at her peak!.......2006-05-30
The production values of the film were top of the line and it shows on this fine CD. It's a chance to experience Judy's talent on a more intimate basis without the visuals.
A must-have for every serious Garland collector.
a "Star" shines like never before..........2005-04-27
The big bonus for getting this latest edition is for Garland's complete rendition of "The Trinidad Coconut Oil Shampoo Commercial" (without the dialogue of James Mason). This has been taken from a rare acetate master, so while the sound quality is not the best, having the number complete without interrupting dialogue is a more than ample compensation. You will notice too that "Lose That Long Face" has been newly mastered from a better stereo source (cutting out the thunder-crashes that were heard on the first CD master, and Garland's singing no longer has those violent analogue fluctuations during the introduction). "Gotta Have Me Go with You" is now presented without the screams and noises, in a new master from the mono soundtrack.
"When My Baby Walks Down the Street", a section cut from the "Born in a Trunk" sequence, has been added as a bonus track. This sparkling-new STAR IS BORN reissue is a great tribute to what is most definitely Judy Garland's greatest hour on film.
Musical perfection of the highest magnitude!!!.......2005-02-25
And her instrument was showcased at its best in the music from her triumphant "A Star is Born".
This expanded version is a bona-fide treasure with the highlight being Garland's earth-shattering "The Man That Got Away," presented with vocals and several instrumental versions. Along with "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," and "The Trolley Song", "The Man That Got Away" is an essential for Garland fans, as well as those that know a good song when they hear it.
The fifteen-minute medley that was featured in the film as the "introduction" of "Vicki" to the public is another outstanding track, featuring "Born in a Trunk", "Suwanee," and "My Melancholy Baby," all exquisitely performed by the legendary talent.
Clocking in at just under eighty minutes, the soundtrack to the classic film is, indeed, in a class by itself, and deserving of repeated listening, maintaining its "freshness" after more than five decades.

should come with a health warning .......2006-05-16
they had the edge of the stooges and the glam pop rock of T.REX
there single BOM BOM BOM being one of the catchiest singles this year no doubt,
but it's one of the best on the album..along with
"bombs below" "i owe" "god made hate"
the living things fuse together social/political/religous commentry, without preaching and i've long for a new band apart from the pop greenday's american idiot
to make an standing impression in the way they form their lyrics and this band have done both fused together ferocious glam punk rock and political lyrics too truly cermented an classic album and a band that will be spoken about for generations too come
classic artwork, reminds me of tyrannosaurus rex album
"my people were fair now their content to wear stars on their brows"
it's here and it could be the album of the year,
This band could save rock n roll!!.......2006-05-12
On the song "Bom, Bom, Bom".......2006-03-28
As close to perfect as you get..........2006-01-26
That's not to speak against the quality of the Living Things as a band. In fact, they're quite talented. And they prove that on their album, Ahead of the Lions.
Beginning with "Bombs Below", the Things systematically assault the listener with a potent mix of punk, metal, and politics. From there it continues song-by-song, the band crafting their own brand of anarchy ranging from the AC/DC-gets-into-a-scuffle-with-the-Ramones anthem of "Bom Bom Bom" to the throat-shredding "On All Fours". It reaches a pinnacle with "March In Daylight", which utilizes one of the best recent hard rock riffs this side of H.I.M.'s "Wings of a Butterfly". Oddly enough, one of the oddities among the assorted chaos is "Mosters of Man". The song itself still maintains the hard-charging emotion of most of the former but it includes horns and distortion, causing it to sound like vintage Love & Rockets. That isn't an insult, either. It just stands out.
Unfortunately, for all the exciting music there is to be found, the album isn't perfect. The band stumbles when it tries to slow things down. Much like retro-rock revivalist brethren Jet, the band just can't write a good slow song. Or at least, the slow songs get buried beneath the noise and adrenaline of the heavier songs.
Terrible album. No Talent........2006-01-12
