Editorial Reviews
To hear Xiu Xiu is to be shaken, disturbed, and shown something original. Jamie Stewart sings haunted and tortured, though always with a sense of humor somewhere below the poisoned blood. "La Foret" is his most harrowing and beautiful to date, waltzing between acoustic parts so intimate you can hear his shoe scooting on the studio floor as he inches closer to the mic, and pounding dark-wave thunderstorms where electronics go Mogwai loud and Jamie screams over the hissing, spitting deluge. It's the type of record that leaves you seasick. Give your heart to the darkness; the rewards are immense.

Sensuality Personified!.......2005-04-27
It is by now, very difficult to imagine anyone singing "Il est doux" with more apt expression of the line than La Crespin. Wagner's Wesendonk lieder is simply sublime from start to finish and the Faure takes on new meaning. That she is comical, melancholy, fun and happy by turns singles her out. This collection captures all her awesome talent. Underneath it all seems to be a very, if I may, sexual energy.
Crespin must be heard to be believed and the miracle lies in that even her softest tones are really enveloping, never thin. All tones are open and this is why there are enough colors in Regine Crespin's delicious voice to paint the world a thousand times, but it may also be why she infamous for being short and edgy on top but I remind, never here is she such. She is a relaxed singer in superb voice, comfortable in her own olive skin and makes the most out of every word those poets wrote.
The whole collection is unique in pace, style, and voice. It is Regine Crespin...in a nutshell fabulous!

Delibes's opera Lakmé is full of gorgeous melodies, even if you don't count the coloratura sensation, the famous "Bell Song." That aria virtually demands a soprano of Sutherland's agility and ease, and it gets it here (this is the highlights version of Sutherland's complete recording). Even the few singers who can match her in the upper altitudes can't do it with a voice so rich and full. Sutherland's is a Lakmé beyond comparison with twittering, thin-voiced, coloratura specialists. She did make this recording at a time when her diction was mushy and her vocal lines sometimes drooped, so she's not beyond criticism. But revel in the voice; after all, Lakmé is a cardboard character, and the opera, for all its considerable charms, isn't another Ring cycle. Sutherland's colleagues are excellent too. Vanzo was one of the finest lyric tenors of his generation, and he's by far the best Gérald on disc. Jane Berbié and Gabriel Bacquier are also unmatched, and Bonynge's conducting is idiomatic and flowing. Add engineering from Decca/London's golden age of recording, and here's a Lakmé to treasure. --Dan DavisCustomer Reviews:

Incomparable voice.......2006-11-06
the perfect vehicle for Sutherland.......2001-06-28
I have one other recording of Joan Sutherland singing the Bell Song. It is on her Art of the Prima Donna CD. That rendition is slower, more technically precise, with less flourishes. On this recording of Lakme, she speeds it up considerably, with a few more flourishes.
A third highlight is her duet with Alain Vanzo, "Lakme! Lakme! C'est toi..." What a wonderful, wonderful pairing and performance. Curiously enough, this gorgeous duet isn't even mentioned on the back of the CD jewel case as one of the high points of this highlights package!
Not every "highlight" here will take your breath away, but if nothing else, you can push the repeat button, and listen to the meltingly beautiful flower song again and again.

Early Caballe, covering the range of her opera roles.......2006-09-20
The reviewers below have given deserved praise to Caballe's abilities as diva. My onw opinion is that she was better on records than in the opera house. She wasn't gifted as an actress and cut a short, wide figure onstage. But as a vocal actress on disc she was very convincing, despite her over-reliance on pathos and delicacy. One longs at times, amid all the beauitful floated notes, for more spine and guts to her heroines. (I find her acclaimed Aida, for example, a one-note portrayal.) Lady Macbeth needs to be more sinister, Elisabetta more tragically enduring.
In all, this two-fer serves as a fine survey of her early career, and for listeners like me, who don't necessarily buy Caballe's complete opera sets, it may be all we need.
A great collection of diva Caballe's best singing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-12-26
REALLY GOOD !.......2004-02-19
Cut-and-Paste Caballe.......2003-05-17
For Caballe fans that already own the backlist of her recitals, there is not enough here to entice you to buy this new recital, unless you like the unique combination of arias. Tracks 1-5 on disc one are wonderful interpretations by Caballe of Verdian arias. I especially like the one from Macbeth- perfectly executed, with the pianissimi in all the right places. Equally as thrilling is her Tu Che Le Vanita, a dramatic, long aria that shows off the interpretive power she was capable of, when she wasn't in a lazy mood. As for the Ave Maria, I find it curious that they chose to cut the preceding Willow Song. In my mind, you can have a Willow Song on a soprano's recital disc without the Ave Maria, but it seems inappropriate for the reverse to be the case. Personally, I don't think that Caballe has anything on Mirella Freni, who is perhaps the most perfect Desdemona of her era.
I must admit to not having heard Caballe's interpretations of L'Altra Notte and Voi Lo Sapete. To imagine Caballe singing Santuzza really seems like a stretch to me. My favorite Santuzzas are Callas, Bumbry, and Verrett (in that order). Of course, Caballe did sing a lot of roles, and it isn't impossible that she could do justice to the aria, but I just can't imagine it, try as I might. A final selection worth mentioning is the aria from William Tell, from a supreme bel canto recording of Rossini's masterpiece.
Tracks 1-11 on the second disc are culled from her famous Puccini Arias recording, with the exception of In Questa Reggia from Turandot (a role that she would sing very late in her career, as opposed to the more familiar and suitable-for-her-voice role of Liu). What is notable is what didn't make the cut. Listeners will be deprived of her heart-wrenching, powerful interpretation of Sola, Perduta, Abbandonata, with its sinister clarinet obligato. They will also miss out on an enchanting aria from Puccini's little known and rarely staged Le Villi. This is a shame, since the original Puccini Aria disc is currently out of circulation.
The rest of disc two focuses on Bellini, in the form of I Puritani and Il Pirata. Listeners will be treated to both the polacca and the mad scene from Bellini' final opera. Caballe, of course, cannot hold a candle to Joan Sutherland, who was a true coloratura soprano (Caballe was more lyrical), but she isn't bad, either, as Elvira. The Bellini role that would garner her more acclaim was Imogene from Il Pirata. This two-disc recital draws to a close with her divine reading of Imogene's mad scene. This is the stuff of operatic legend.
All in all, minor quibbles aside, this is a great introduction to those not familiar with Caballe's grand art.

Le parfum d'extase.......2007-05-18
Firstly (a flaw to me, perhaps not to others), I'm not very fond of Gérard Souzay's voice and vocal approach. He frequently sounds blustery and the timbre does not really appeal to me. Yet his commitment to these beautiful songs is impeccable, and he has a wealth of experience, beautifully authentic French (of course!) and occasionally the singing is very effective indeed. I agree that the "La bonne chanson" set is sensitive and moving - it's Souzay at his best. But in general... Souzay is not one of my favourite baritones.
Secondly, as other reviews have mentioned, no translations are included. However, the full text of each song is contained in the accompanying booklet, and for those who don't read French well enough to translate, there are translations on-line of all of the poems set by Fauré. I agree this is not an ideal solution, and that the boxed set would have been improved by translations.
Thirdly, one is sometimes overwhelmed by the balance of the voice compared to that of the piano - this is particularly noticeable in Souzay's singing. However, the piano is still audible. The solution is mostly to turn down the volume for one or two tracks.
Let me now explain why, in spite of the above faults, I still consider this a superb set.
Firstly, the truly lovely singing of Elly Ameling. What a gloriously pretty sound - and I mean "pretty" without any denigration whatsoever. It's not JUST pretty - it's beautiful as well. This is a lovely gleaming sound, perfectly placed, and with a wealth of intrinsic and elegant interpretation that is native to Elly Ameling's singing. She's a miracle - no matter what she sings, it sounds "sung in" and perfectly understood, perfectly interpreted. (I admit Ms Ameling's French is slightly accented at times, but it's completely understandable and very good. It doesn't impair the performance of these songs at all.)
Secondly, Dalton Baldwin's playing is sensitive and impassioned in turns - always lyrical, always attuned to the requirements of each song. What a huge amount of work must have gone into this mammoth 4-CD task!
Thirdly, these vocal compositions are exquisite. Several of them are justly famous as works of genius, and fall so delightfully upon the ear that it seems they have always existed, perfect and full of wonder... that Fauré plucked them out of semi-existence to give them reality.
Fourthly... it's 4CDs of Fauré's vocal works. For those who love French vocal music, it's an extravagant delight to have such a thorough and wide-ranging collection. For singing students, how marvellous to have such a collection to hand to help when choosing songs. For fellow singers, what joy to have all of these songs in such a fine collection in order to note details and particularly admirable points.
In short - this is a set I wouldn't be without. While it's not flawless, it's full of delights. Ameling's singing of "La rose" is one of the highlights, and Fauré's three exquisite duets are all represented here. Highly recommended.
Superb chansoms. Superb Ameling. Buy It........2007-03-01
My only objection to the package is that while the notes five the French text of the songs and the author of the text, there is no translation. Otherwise, this is a super buy.
Great!!!.......2006-06-19

Sings a wide range of works well.......2007-04-29
A brief sampling of her work on this CD. From Puccini's "Madam Butterfly," the CD begins with "Un bel di vedremo." She sings smoothly with a nice sound to her voice. Normally, when she increases the volume of her singing, the sound of her voice is still good. There are some occasional unpleasant sounds, but nothing notable. This is a nice dramatic rendering of an iconic aria. She hits the higher notes well.
Rossini's "William Tell" isn't much performed these days. But Caballe's version of "Sombre foret" suggests that some good operatic music is not played often enough. This is well sung; Caballe shows good vocal agility at the close.
"Son vergin vezzosa," from Bellini's "I Puritani," shows off her agile vocal technique. Early on, she floats a nice piano high note. In terms of technique, it is disappointing that the trills are not evident. In the end, this is a good version of this work, but not at the level of Jo, or Sills, or Sutherland. Outside of trills, ornamentation is good, but that is like saying that outside of its lack of speed, a sports car is a lot of fun to drive. Still, other ornamentation is well done, including appoggiaturas. The Wikipedia says (under ornamentation): "In music, ornaments are musical flourishes that are not necessary to the overall melodic (or harmonic) line, but serve to decorate or "ornament" that line. Many ornaments are performed as "fast notes" around a central note. . . . From the Italian word appoggiare, "to lean upon". . . . The long appoggiatura is important melodically and often suspend the principal note by taking away the time-value of the appoggiatura prefixed to it (generally half the time value of the note, though in triple time, for example, it might receive two thirds of the time). The added note (the unessential note) is one degree higher or lower than the principal note; and, if lower, it may or may not be chromatically raised (see mordent)." I'm not sure, as a musical nonexpert, that I fully understand the technicalities here, but Caballe does seem to exhibit nice ornamentation as per the above.
From "La Boheme," we have "Donde liata usci," very nicely done. This is prettily sung, for the most part, with only a rare unpleasant sound intruding. Finally, from "Turandot," "Signore ascolta." This is a smoothly sung version. From this CD, it is clear that Caballe can sing Puccini very well indeed. There is a nice piano high note at the close.
So, Caballe is clearly an excellent soprano although not, in my judgment, among the "all time greats."
A great Caballe cd at a bargin price!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1.......2005-12-23
This is one of the first caballe cds I bought, and I still feel it makes a nice demonstration of the legendary caballe sound. This cd is full of examples of why caballe is considered by many to have the most beautiful voice in opera history. The selection from don carlos has a ends with a stunningly beautiful pianissimo,on non pianger, mia compagna. And her signore ascolta,is the most beautiful ever recorded ending with a 15 second high piannissimo, that has to be heard to be believed!
A Bit disappointed.......2003-10-15
What I find distracting in this CD is the sloppiness in which she sung the arias. Upon listening to it, I keep wondering why she can't sound as wonderful as she did on that Decca CD that I heard her in. Part of the reason I guess is that I find other sopranos to sing some of this repertoire much better than Caballe. Apart from the aria in Turandot, I find Tebaldi to be a better puccinian, while I like a true coloratura or a dramatic in the other roles. Even her one Liu aria in this CD is not as good as the one I've owned, again sloppiness.
The high notes are another problem. She sounds excellent when she floats them, but when she sung them in full voice they sounded more like screams. I just couldn't get over these two humps in which a soprano of her caliber should not have done.
Better luck next time I guess.
Bad sound :((((.......2001-03-07

When it comes to song writing, Ernest Chausson has long stood in the shadows of Debussy, Duparc, Fauré, and Ravel, but his gentle and self-effacing songs go so much further than the merely charming. To have the complete collection gathered on disc is a treat, and with artists like these, the performances are about as good as you could expect this side of the pearly gates. Ann Murray and Felicity Lott need no introduction for their celestial singing of this repertoire. The American baritone Chris Pedro Trakas is less well-known, but he comes with a clutch of top prizes and, more to the point, a beautifully sensitive voice, which he uses to great effect here.Underpinning everything is accompanist Graham Johnson, whose playing is always just so right, whatever area of the song repertoire he takes on, and who provides (uncredited) a must-read essay on Chausson that really engages with the music. Soprano Geraldine McGreevy is a welcome addition in two duets, as is the Chilingirian Quartet, accompanying Ann Murray in the final number, "Chanson perpétuelle." If a reason for a reassessment of Chausson's role as a writer of mélodie is needed, this marvelous set is overwhelmingly it. --Keith Clarke

The Best Recordings of Vintage Music.......2005-01-05
This Marcel Mule CD is one that should be owned by all saxophonists.
THE essential saxophone recording........2003-07-31
Every single saxophonist should own this album, for it is a perfect example of how the saxophone is supposed to be played.
A Foundational Recording for MOdern Saxaphone.......2003-01-27
Mule has conquered some exraordinary compositions on this recording. He has taken such a youthful instrument and has given age which in turn, encompasses the soul and feeling that classical music presents in almost any setting. For an insturment that was so scientifically crafted, Mule has given the saxaphone life and colors. His intonation is almost infallable. He has a dark, deep and rich sound that resonates on every longer tone. And his vibrato just sings as any stringed instrument would do.
While the recording is a little fuzzy, which is probably due to it's date of recording, and, or that the recording was done from a distance, and in a hall, the purchase is well worth it. To be able to hear one of the leading forerunners in this still somewhat sub-cultural group of performers is a wonderful experience. So much can be learned from this cd.

A smoky-voiced interpretation - highly intelligent, but not to everyone's taste.......2007-05-19
But I'm afraid I cannot unequivocally like this album. While there is much to admire in Ms Schäfer's voice, I thought continually in each track that there seemed signs of damage in the voice. Ms Schäfer uses a slightly "smoky" sound, which - however appropriate for Berg, Schönberg, etc. - is NOT appropriate for French vocal salon music as the basic vocal sound. Because she uses it all the time, it seems to me to have become part of her timbre. There will be many, I'm sure, who will like this. I don't. That's my personal taste.
Secondly - I must respectfully disagree with the reviewer below who said that the French sung here was beautiful. I couldn't help but notice the discernible German accent in the French. But on the plus side, Ms Schäfer has an impressive rapport with the MEANING of the French. She was meticulous with the faint emphases - she obviously knows what she is singing. I appreciate that enormously.
My third reason for not completely loving this recording was the performance of the two duets. I simply did not like the deliberate downward glissandi - not at all. They only occurred a couple of times, but those slides have preyed on me so much that I can't relax and enjoy just the beautifully sung parts of those duets (and some of those of two duets are very beautifully sung) because I'm mentally bracing myself for the sliding. I think that most listeners won't react with the nails-in-the-palms wincing - but for me, it fatally flaws both of those duets.
The songs chosen for this CD are exquisite - often dreamy and wandering with apparent casualness through a meandering stream of delicate notes. The music will certainly delight.
All in all, I give a half-hearted and equivocal recommendation of the album. My main reason for this equivocation is that I don't like the smoky timbre of Schäfer in this repertoire, and the glissandi in the duets. For those who simply flat-out love Ms Schäfer's voice, you'll find nothing at which to cavil in the solo repertoire, and I suspect most people will not mind the occasional downward slides in the duets (otherwise quite lovely).
French song recital a real treasure.......2000-07-31
