Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
For his first solo album in over 20 years, Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry isn't exactly tearing up the blueprint. He may not have Diane Warren faxing over the power-ballads but this eponymous release is pretty much what you would expect from the man who has provided the sleazy, powerhouse riffs for everything from "Walk This Way" to "Dude Looks Like A Lady." He's no Steven Tyler but Perry holds his own on the vocal tracks here, including respectful covers of the Doors' "Crystal Ship" and Woody Guthrie's "Vigilante Man." But it's the bluesy instrumental material like "Twilight" and "Mercy" that shows the guitar hero (who also plays bass, keyboards and co-produces) at his amplifier blowing best. --Aidin Vaziri

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Two tracks I really like.......2007-07-21

The Mission Impossible theme is performed well.
The Fireball theme is actually much improved on this version. I prefer the orchestra and the vocals over the original.

2 out of 5 stars Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15

As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2006-05-17

The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06

I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24

Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

If one had told an Aerosmith fan in 1975 that three decades hence they'd be shelling out a handful of c-notes to see their heroes rocking a Las Vegas quasi-lounge, they'd have likely chuckled, slapped the headphones back over their greasy locks and cranked up Toys in the Attic for its 897th go `round. But here they are, American hard rock's greatest survivors, rockin', talkin' `n' walking an artistic tightrope at the Hard Rock Café's Joint between expected crotch-rock chestnuts (a blues-sassed "Same Old Song and Dance," a hard-charging "Draw the Line" and obligatory "Walk This Way") and their unlikely latter-day incarnation the MOR ballad-mongers of Diane Warren's "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing." But if gritty takes on "No More No More" and the shadowy "Seasons of Wither" point up just how formulaic the band had become by the time of Just Push Play's "Light Inside," their snotty covers of "Big Ten Inch" and "Rattlesnake Shake," Fleetwood Mac's `60s ode to self-love, argue they're still 15 at heart - even if the focused performances here are obviously the product of grizzled veterans. The DVD program on this Dual Disc edition features live video takes of the album's "No More.." and "Draw the Line," as well as bonus performances of early band staples "Dream On" and "Sweet Emotion." --Jerry McCulley

1 out of 5 stars garbage!.......2007-02-26

don't waste your money on this. if you wanna buy an aerosmith live album, live! bootleg from '78 is the only one you'll need.

5 out of 5 stars AEROSMITH STILL BURN DOWN THE HOUSE.......2007-01-11

This Album has a great concert in Hard Rock Las Vegas, include classic songs of the band till the record Just Push Play, and it is a Dual disc, it means that has a the live songs in one side and a 4 presententations LIVE (in DVD format) in the other side, if you are a Aerosmit's Fan you MUST LISTEN THIS ALBUM

5 out of 5 stars GREAT!!!.......2006-04-27

Again, Aerosmith hasn't let us down. They continue to rock hard and put out awesome CDs! I highly recommend this as a "must have" for any Aerosmith fan!

5 out of 5 stars Aerosmith still kicks ass!.......2006-03-10

Aerosmith is the best band in the entire universe! When I looked at the set list, I was ecstatic to see "No More No More" and my all time personal favorite, "Seasons of Wither". I am surprised they released a live album so soon after "You gotta move". They already have Bootleg and Classics Live One and Two. But this is a great CD and DVD. At least since Pandora's Box, I have always wanted to hear "No More No More" live (I finally got my wish!). I think if "You gotta move" didn't prove that they're the greatest, then this should have done the trick! Rock On!

4 out of 5 stars They Still Sound Great.......2006-03-04

Aerosmith can still rock it after 30+ years. Steven Tyler and Joe Perry Sound better than ever. The only reason i give this 4 stars is because there are so many different CD variations that include all these bonus songs, so why not just but it on the CD. Even if it is two discs, include the bonus songs.

5 out of 5 stars A real gem of an album ~ fun.......2005-09-20

Hope everyone is doing well. This is a cut above what you would expect.. very musical (funky tracks, rockers, anthems, reefer madness, etc.). You'll probably listen to it more than once, for sure dude/dudess!

5 out of 5 stars The Music Definately Did The Talking.......2003-11-08

What you see is what you get.
an ultimate classic 1980 release, that is a treat for your ears.
Ralph Morman gives more than 100% here, and Joe's guitar work is like always, (great). The musicians behind this great piece are nothing less than masters.I beleive Greg Kihn had a tune out in the 80's that best sums up how I personally feel about this cd.
and that is (They Don't Write Em Like This Anymore)
***** Five big ones here. Platinum all the way.

5 out of 5 stars Joe Perry Project is ON FIRE!.......2003-01-01

After leaving Aerosmith in 1979, Joe Perry created his own band: The Joe Perry Project (Ralph Morman - Vocals, Joe Perry - Guitars & Vocals, David Hull - Bass & Vocals, and Ronnie Stewart - Drums). With this album and this band, Joe showed the fans a whole other side of himself that they hadn't seen in Aerosmith. Joe came out with some of his greatest guitar licks ever heard before. He and Ralph wrote great songs and did an excellent job on vocals together.

The opening title track, "Let The Music Do The Talking" is the greatest song on the album. It starts out with a big bass riff and then a short drum roll and then, BANG! Joe kicks in with the loud guitar riffs. This song is so INTENSE and is a GENUINE ANTHEMETIC MASTERPIECE!! Some lyrics are, "Wanna take a chance and dance before. I got to leave alone. On short song and she'll be gone. I wish her off was on. Gotta try, gotta try another way to get her. To come around to me. Let The Music Do The Talking. Let The Music Do The Talking."

The next track, "Conflict of Interest is a good loud song with excellent lyrics written and sung by Joe. It also has a great instrumental piece at the end. The next track, "Discount Dogs" is a song well done by Ralph. His vocals were perfect for the lyrics. His voice fits Joe's style perfectly. "Shooting Star" is another great tune sung by Joe and has a great rythem and great lyrics.

The instrumental "Break Song" is just a jam that the band did together. It has great guitar solos and drum beats. "The Mist Is Rising" written and sung by Joe is a little low-tone by is a slow rock/bluesy piece of work. The last track, "Life At A Glance" is a PURE MASTERPIECE written and sung by Joe and Ralph. Excellent guitar riffs and drum beats.

THIS ALBUM IS JOE PERRY ALL-TIME GREATEST EFFORT!! LET THE MUSIC DO THE TALKING IS ONE OF THE GREATEST ROCK AND ROLL ALBUMS OF ALL TIME!!!

5 out of 5 stars Good for Joe!!..........2002-07-21

Only two members of Aerosmith left the group and Joe was one of them. Brad Whitford had a short lived group with Derek St. Holmes, but it fell apart after one decent album. Joe Perry put together a great band called The Joe Perry Project. They made three albums before Joe rejoined 'Smith in '84. This is a solid record and it has a good metal sound similer to "Rocks" or "Draw the Line". Not just for collecters of Aerosmith, this is great if you just collect decent hard rock/metal from the 70's/80's.

4 out of 5 stars Joe Perry stands on his own w/out Tyler's boys........2002-03-14

This album rocks!! The more I listen to it, the more I WANT to listen to it. I have nothing to complain about this album, except that it needs to be remastered to give it a more fresh sound.
All the songs are great, "Rockin' train", "Conflict of interest" and "Discount dogs" are the standout tracks. Joe Perry's boys sound fresh and full of energy. This whole album has a great feel to it, and is a good example that Joe needs to pull out of Aerosmith every now and again to put out a quality effort without a bus load of songwriter's and Steven Tyler's shouting and screaming a 1000 times over a good guitar lick.

4 out of 5 stars The Joe Perry Project has the Rock and Rolls again..........2003-01-01

After Joe's first solo album "Let The Music Do The Talking" was a success, he went back in the studio in '81 and with a new singer Charlie Farren. Together they wrote some great new songs. Joe as always puts his best in his work and he pulled out more guitar licks and riffs that are amazing. While the first album was really loud hard rock and bluesy, this next album is more back to Joe's original Rock and Roll roots.

The opener "East Coast, West Coast" written and sung by Farren is a great song to open a great album. The song is very catchy and fast tone. "In the east coast, in the west coast. Trough the middle of the city. In the north shore, in the south shore. Through the middle of the commonwealth I will be rockin' for you. I will be rockin' for you. I will be rock and a rollin' for you." The song has a great guitar solo by Joe and great ryhtem riffs by Farren, Hull and Stewart. The title track, "I've Got The Rock and Rolls Again" is a generally good solid tune. It starts out with a bluesy guitar solo and then Charlie kicks in with the lead vocals and then a fast drum beat by Stewart.

As a special addition, David Hull (Bass) also sings two songs on the album, "Buzz Buzz", and "Dirty Little Things". The first of his two tracks, "Buzz Buzz" is AN AWSOME TUNE! Really cool guitar riffs and drum beats. Real catchy lyrics. Hull did a great job on this song. It's a masterpiece. His other track, "Dirty Little Things" is another great tune. A decent riff and beat. His first track "Buzz Buzz" is way better.

The last two closers, "Play The Game" and "South Station Blues" are excellent. The first one "Play The Game" is low-tone and a somewhat slow rocker. It's a pretty good piece of work. Last but not least, "South Station Blues," Joe's masterpiece. This song is undoubtedly one of his greatest songs. He did lead vocals and put some of his all-time greatest riffs. The song starts out with a acoustic bass guitar solo and then the music kicks in after Joe starts singing with his excellent voice.

This album is Joe's greatest solo album along with "Let The Music Do The Talking." The lead singer change on the first album of Ralph Morman to Charlie Farren on the second album was great (even though Morman did good). This is a MASTERPIECE! Get into the Rock and Rolls again and buy this album.

5 out of 5 stars ROCKS.......2002-07-21

I've seen the Joe Perry Project numerous times and I can tell you that the Music Does Do the Talkin. Here is the raw, bone to bone, guitar that makes Joe Perry an American Icon. His talent as a solo artist was only over shadowed by his legacy as the heart and soul of Americas greatest rock and roll band. I've got the Rock and Rolls Again is a pure rock and roll experience. You don't have to be an Aerosmith fan to apprciate the fine and smooth guitar of of one of the finest. Play on Joe.

5 out of 5 stars Raw, Rude, Rowdy and Rockin'!.......2002-05-05

I'm an old school Aerosmith fan from the earliest days of the band and I always loved Joe Perry's guitar style. Occasionally, I felt like Joe was somewhat confined by the band, but he still managed to give Aerosmith an edge. When Joe left to form the JPP I was devastated, but by the release of "Ive Got the Rock'n'Rolls Again" I was certain Joe had found his niche. Just one album later and the JPP was history. Joe rejoined Aerosmith and in a sense the band's gain was a loss to the rock world. This album, top to bottom, kicks big, fat tail. The band sounds live and fresh. Everything has a rough edge...the playing, the singing, the production...and the result is rock'n'roll bliss!

While "Let The Music Do The Talking" was a nice beginning, this album was undoubtedly the peak of the three JPP releases and it is great headphone fodder. If you want to rock out and release some stress, play this CD loud! I was fortunate enough to see the JPP live at the Agora Ballroom in Youngstown, Ohio while in college and I can vouch for the energy the band had on stage.

My personal favorite cuts are "East Coast,West Coast","..Arrogance","Buzz Buzz","Dirty Little Things","Play the Game" and the title cut. This album is far from uneven as a previous reviewer stated, it is solid, exhausting and a great listen. Joe, feel free to stray into a solo project again sometime...the world needs another true rock album of this calibur.

4 out of 5 stars Meat and Potatoes Rock 'N Roll!.......2006-07-19

I bought this the day it came out and I found I listened to it alot during the summer of 2005. Its great for anytime of day, and Joe's sincerity really comes through in his music and the great DVD side which is a 45 minute tour of Joe and his studio, guitars and travels.

5 out of 5 stars Just The Best!.......2006-05-22

No one rocks the guitar like Joe Perry but you can hear all that on Aerosmith CDs. What's great about this solo effort is hearing how sexy his voice is. Joe's cover of "Crystal Ship" is way more seductive than Jim Morrison's.
The whole CD sounds like a love song to his wife Billie but it's not made up of wimpy ballads. It's hard and fast and lots of fun. I'd love to hear him solo live.

2 out of 5 stars Over-rated.......2006-03-14

Joe Perry is the most over-rated guitar player in rock music. I highly suggest that if you want to listen to some better guitar work then check out Joe Satrini, Wayne Krantiz, Jimi Hendrix, or Stevie Ray Vaughn as they are much better then Mr. Perry. There are some cool blusey tunes on this album, but most of it is just filler material and cheezy guitar hot licking that is way over-rated!

5 out of 5 stars Joe Perry Rocks!.......2006-01-01

I have played this CD over and over again, always pleasantly pleased with the anticipated harmonies and major guitar movements. The varied beats, speeds, and flavors keep the songs fresh and easily distinguishable as unique compositions; great performances from Joe's heart.

As an avid Aerosmith fan, I have always been intrigued by Joe's strong guitar contributions on their albums. He does NOT fail to deliver on this CD.

Some have stated he is no Steven Tyler. To that comment, one should think: Great! Both performers are terrific for what they do best. If I want the Steven Tyler sound, I have a library full of Aerosmith CDs to satisfy that want. If I want to listen to wall-shaking guitar flavored with gentle vocals, I now have a CD that satifies that want as well.

You can expect wonderfully mastered chords that are not overshadowed by Joe's voice, but rather accompanied by it in memorable choruses and main lyrical exposition.

The best way to listen to this CD is in a quiet room with nothing else on your mind. Only then can your imagination take you to the place that Joe wants you to go.

2 out of 5 stars is this the god we once knew?.......2005-11-12

joe perry's solo album..where he's written the lyrics sung the songs OH GOD please say it isn't so? he can't of have done such career suicide could he really? yes he has..man the music rocks great guitar work joe..terrible lyrics and please don't sing ever again and if you're thinking about doing another solo album like this..then think again..team back up with steven tyler and he'll write the lyrics while you write the music and stay the hell away from the microphone get back to being the toxic twins in an well respected band called AEROSMITH

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Punk for Now (and then) People.......2006-09-13

When this album burst forth, the New York Dolls seemed a distant memory (even though their demise came only a few years earlier), but David Johansen scraped off his makeup, slipped on a pair of sensible shoes, and proceeded to rock.

It's a pity his back catalogue is in such disarray; this album (along with "In Style") are Rock 'n' Roll masterpieces.

Will someone out there remaster these CDs already? We're waiting!

In the meantime, check out the New York Dolls NEW album (how exciting is it to say that?) "One Day It Will Please Us To Remember Even This."

5 out of 5 stars 25 years??.......2003-02-04

I was going through an old box last night when I found a cassette with David Johansen wriiten on it. Geez, I have heard this in a long time. so, I popped it in and was totally amazed. Twenty five years ago ths month DJ recorded what was or shoud have been the road map rock bands of the 80's. It's music that has aged beautifully. The lyrics are clever, the guitars are powerful and of course David 's vocals are so raw and passionate.
I woke up this morning singing "Girls".

5 out of 5 stars Come Back David Jo, All Is Forgiven!.......2001-06-06

I still pray for the day when David Johansen abandons all of this Buster Pondexter nonsense and returns to the glory and brilliance exhibited on this, his first solo album, but from what I've read recently, I shouldn't hold my breath. The music he created here is quite a departure from his days of debauchery with The New York Dolls, but it rocks nonetheless. Most of the material has a one-take sort of feel, from the snappy "Funky But Chic" to the straight ahead rock of "Cool Metro" and "Lonely Tenement," to the tender "Donna." The centerpiece and real gem here, however, is the breathtaking "Frenchette," which begins with Johansen only accompanied by a piano before breaking down into a full fledged, guitar-driven celebration of life. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Never outdated !!!.......1999-06-18

David Johansen can be considered a classic. I was born in the same year the New York Dolls released their first LP album, but I like the guys and specially, David. Don't think I'm a 70's music fan, I'm not. But this guy, well he has something to show. This record, his 1st, is a good example of music that can be immortal, with no "expiration date" whatsoever. "Funky but Chic" is a must listen. Trust me, buy, buy, buy!

5 out of 5 stars The best rock and roll album to ever come out of N.Y.C.!!!!!.......1998-12-23

When I bought this album 20 years ago I played it 'til the grooves wore out. David really puts his heart and soul into every song. It sounds like his heart is being torn out when he sings "Frenchette". Standouts include: "Girls", "Not that much", "Lonely Tenement", and my favorite, "I'm a lover". It's sad that this album wasn't a big commercial success and David had to mutate into the lounge lizard Buster Poindexter. If I had to pick one band to play at a party, it would be the group David assembled for this album..........make that one of two bands........the Ramones would be the other band. Buy this CD now!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars The Project's Last Experiment..........2005-02-27

This final release of "The Joe Perry Project" is the band's second-best effort. After the first album achieved Gold status and then the second album achieved less than Gold, Joe Perry completed reformed the whole project and recruited three new band members: Cowboy Mach Bell (vocals), Joe Pet (Drums) and Danny Hargrove (Bass). With this new line-up and the determination to climb back up to stardom with his band. Unfortunately, this album sold the least of the three albums and after the tour for this album, it was apparent that the Project was over.

One of the highlights of this album are Mach Bell's vocals. His voice sounds very similar to the early days of Motley Crue's Vince Neil on many occassions throughout the album. Going to the songs, there are about four songs out the ten that are absolute classics.

The opening title track, "Once A Rocker, Always A Rocker" is a short (just under 3 minutes) rock and roller. The lyrics are well written and Joe's guitar riffs are very bluesy and R&B based. The chorus is also semi-catchy. The next track, the album's best is, "Black Velvet Pants." The intro to this song is outstanding with Joe's guitar solo. The overall sound of this song leans mainly towards Country-Rock with powerful lyrics and a great riffs while the song moves at a country-western style pace. The story behind the music video for this song is that the model for video was Billy Montgomery, Joe Perry's wife-to-be a couple years later and who is still married to today. The next track, "Women In Chains" is an excellent song. The intro is the sound of rattling chains. Some of Bell's greatest vocals performances are resembled on this song. The lyrics are about how women are sometimes mistreated, unrespected or ignored. This is slow rocker and is a semi-ballad. This song is a high point of the album. Jumping to track nine, "Walk With Me Sally" is the album's second highest point next to "Black Velvet Pants." The song moves at a very fast pace and is excellently performed. Throughout the song there is an instrumental break where Bell continues with the lyrics at a fast pace and then the band begins to speed back in to carry on with the chorus. This song resembles some of Joe's best riffs throughout the album.

Overall, the album is good in general and those four tracks mentioned in this review are the highpoints that make the album the most noticable. I think Bell's vocals were very good all around but he ranks just under 1980s "Let the Music Do the Talkin" lead vocalist Ralph Mormon. For those of you that are looking to finish your Joe Perry collection, buy this album and you will like it. This complete's the Project! The Joe Perry Project gets an A+ for the strong effort and determination.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Album! Worth Buying!:).......2003-08-03

Once A Rocker, Always A Rocker is a great Joe Perry Project album, like Let The Music Do The Talking (1st Album) and I've Got The Rock N Rolls Again (2nd Album). some may say that it's the worst JPP album but I think it's full of energy and great lyrics. Of course, Joe leaving Aerosmith wasn't a good thing but still, the JPP was good while it lasted. Once A Rocker, Always A Rocker is a great rock album that's worth buying!:)

4 out of 5 stars Great, Like The Others.......2003-02-13

Joe Perry kept inspired and creative, when he recorded this third Joe Perry Project's album. You can observe it through the songs. If You like Rock 'N' Roll this is a good tip: You have to buy it!!

this is a remastered Japanese import of Joe Perry Project's first recording "let the music do the talking". and to true fans, the extra $ is worth every penny. Aerosmiths version of LTMDTT will never measure to the original, in this reviewer's opinion. for those who remember Aerosmith had creatively derailed by 1980, JP left and this recording proved he had something to say, even without his 'toxic twin'.
