5 out of 5 stars Roger Clyne's master work.......2006-07-13

I am a long time Refreshments fan who lost track of what Roger and PH went on to do afterwards. I caught up with them about a year ago and have not been disappointed. The first few Peacemakers CDs have moments of brilliance with just as many misses, but these releases led me to believe they were working towards something great. Americano is it. Plain and simple. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2006-03-10

If you're like most of my friends, you'll instantly love about three of the songs on this CD. Give the whole CD a chance and you'll start to love the others as well.
Since FFB&B, the Refreshments have been a staple in my collection and Americano! just adds to it.
See these cats live if you ever get the chance. They put as much energy into their shows as they put into writing the songs.
You won't regret buying this CD. Just don't loan it out or you'll probably never get it back.

5 out of 5 stars Best album I've heard in years..........2005-11-29

I got this one on a bit of a lark, not knowing what to expect. My first impression was - this is good. And it's grown on me since then. It's in heavy use in the car over many other classic artists. About the only other artist that seriously competes for time right now is Stevie Ray Vaughan (not that I'm saying they're similar, but to give you an idea of some of my tastes, which are rather wide ranging).

The first 5 songs are as strong of an opening set as I've heard in a while, the last 3 songs (including the "hidden" song) are engrossing, and the whole album is a blast. The songwriting is mature beyond what you normally find praised nowadays in the mainstream. Roger just tells stories that suck you in and pull you to the end. I'm not disappointed, except in all of the other claptrap that passes for rock nowadays on the radio. The rock is refreshing and varied, not stagnant (all the same style). This album explores a lot of areas and leaves you wanting more.

I wish he and his band came to the east coast more, to possibly see them live. I'm sure I would not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Best CD I've heard in a long time, and that's only half the live show........2005-09-25

This band is excellent on CD and twice that live. I've seen them live three times now and am more impressed every time around. The band has taken time after every live show to meet every fan in attendance (how often do you see THAT?) and give autographs and a bit of friendly conversation. If you want to hear what you've been missing in the mainstream, buy this one. You will not be disappointed.

And as always, credit where credit's due for getting out from under the RIAA thumb! If you want to hear great indie work, this is it.

5 out of 5 stars Roots-rock at its best!.......2005-06-25

I have always been a Refreshments fan, but kind of dropped off when they split and it was a while before I realized Roger was still putting out great music.

I happened to be in Spokane on business this past fall, and saw that Roger and his Peacemakers were playing at the Big Easy. One of those better decisions in my life deciding to go. What a great show, and I hadn't heard a lot of his post-Refreshments stuff (although he played plenty of his Refreshments music) but all the songs were instantly likeable and good.

So I got Americano. Truly an excellent CD. Now I happen to favor his slower numbers-- "Switchblade," "Your Name on a Grain of Rice" and "Leave an Open Door" are my favorites, but the whole album is great for a rocking, rootsy listen. Roger's lyrical imagery has always brought me right to the dusty, hot but beautiful Southwest, and his storytelling and heartfelt musicianship are truly superb.

Roger Clyne does not compromise-- he writes and sings exactly what he wants to and what he is good at. It's too bad he has not garnered more credit and attention, although it makes it kind of nice since he plays at such small, intimate venues and you can actually meet him/buy his band a beer after the show.

I have introduced this album to about a half-a-dozen people so far, and they have all loved it. It is one of my favorites of last year, and if I ever get a chance to see him live again I will do it in a heartbeat.

        Album Description

Americano: The Bluegrass Tribute to The Offspring is filled with blisteringly-fast banjo pickin' and bubbly bluegrass harmonies. Cornbread Red's interpretation of The Offspring's music is a mixture of hard-edged playing matched with some of the most fun and funny singing in the bluegrass world. It is a fitting tribute for a band that has built their reputation on being so many things to so many people. If you're a fan of The Offspring, or a fan of truly entertaining music, please come out and play this incredible record.

GOOD ALBUM BY A GREAT PRODUCER, BUT IT IS BASICALLY THE SAME FORMULA AS THE ORIGINAL GRAMMY WINNING ALBUM ME ENAMORE. UNIVERSAL MUSIC HAS RELEASED A DVD/CD WHICH HAS BETTER VALUE, AND BETTER SONGS ON JOSE FELICIANO "AYER HOY Y SIEMPRE" WHICH IS AVAILABLE ON AMAZON.COM

5 out of 5 stars Complex, compelling, not to be missed!.......1999-06-13

Spanish rhythms have never been so powerfully presented as in this album. The precision, the unerring beat, the musical complexity combine to make this one of Jose's most exciting albums. "Por La Humanidad" puts a smashing finish behind "Verde" and "La Hija De La Luna", leaving the listener breathless and wanting to play it again and again. No Feliciano collection is complete without this album.

The ending of Quadrophenia was the first thing I thought of when I heard the news in June of 1996 that Material Issue's guitarist, singer, and songwriter Jim Ellison had been found dead at 31, slumped over a moped in the garage of his suburban Chicago home. Apparently distraught over a recent breakup, Ellison was the victim of carbon monoxide poisoning in what was eventually ruled a suicide. But it's the movie image of Quadraphenia's Jimmy rather than that sad real-life picture of Jim that stays with me as I contemplate Material Issue's fourth (and by necessity, last) album. Telecommando Americano consists of 11 new tracks that Ellison started and bassist Ted Ansani and drummer Mike Zelenko finished, as well as the six songs from the trio's vinyl-only 1987 debut, thus book-ending the band's career. With early roots in Chicago's mid-'80s '60s revival scene, Ellison was a mod. Everyone knows that Ellison dressed the part, and the influence of mod heroes such as the Who and the Small Faces is loud and clear on driving, upbeat pop songs such as "She's Going Through My Head," and "A Very Good Thing." But Ellison also had the strong work ethic, his self-confidence bordering on arrogance, and a love of a good time that characterized the '60s mods. This was an attitude that was very much out of step with the prevailing ethos of the grunge/alt-rock '90s. Though Material Issue scored a respectable hit with International Pop Overthrow, its 1991 Mercury Records debut, it was soon overshadowed by that year's biggest success story, Nirvana's Nevermind. In retrospect, Cobain and Ellison had a lot in common below their surface differences: Both men were incurable romantics who bought into idealized and perhaps unobtainable standards for love, and they may have paid the ultimate price for it. Still, there's a palpable joy that comes through in every note of Telecommando Americano, and I believe that singing and picking up the guitar were life-affirming acts for Ellison. When I listen to his last album or Nirvana's From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah, I hear the sound of talented if troubled artists drowning out the voice of nihilism with a blast of feedback or a ringing power chord. But then I've always believed that Jimmy jumped off that scooter. --Jim Derogatis

          Customer Reviews:

          4 out of 5 stars Unfinished Business.......2004-02-14

Material Issue's last album just serves to remind us of what could have been.

They are incredible on the pounding "2 Steps," and the ballad "Carousel" is just plain beautiful. In fact, "Carousel" should've been a huge pop hit, but with these guys' obscurity, you know it never could've happened.

The old stuff tacked on at the end is killer, especially "She's Goin thru my head," which beats the later version on Freak City Soundtrack.

If you have the other albums, don't miss out on this one, because it has some of Jim Ellison's best moments.

4 out of 5 stars Fitting farewell for MI.......2000-07-29

I can't believe this is the first review of the final album by the happy-pop kings Material Issue. For those who need a review, guitarist and lead singer of MI, Jim Ellison killed himself over 4 years ago, and to me it's still a loss because MI represented quick catchy pop-rock tunes, girl's name love songs and true romance in 3 minute bursts of music. And so in 1998, the 2 remaning members of MI re-worked and completed the songs that were to be the next album, and as a bonus to fans re-released the initial EP that sprung the band to indie-stardom. And so what you get with this disc is 11 tracks that is a new album and 7 tracks of remastered old tunes, quite a bargain. If you're wondering about the music that didn't change over 4 albums, quick catchy rock tunes about love and loss, and Jim Ellison's clear passionate voice echoing over his guitar work. This and the 3 other MI discs are recommended for the true rock and roll fan.

3 out of 5 stars Bought if for "Talented Mr Ripley" Song..........2007-04-11

I bought this CD to have the original song that was played in the Talented Mr. Ripley movie. The song is great. The rest of the songs are not really my type.
