Kind of a letdown........2006-08-06

I was given to understand that this album was a big-band cover of all the songs in Paul McCartney's "Ram," which has long been one of my favorites (and I'm not a huge McCartney fan at all). But it's not really that. It's more of a lyrics-free version of the same album. You still have the Spectorish ethereal chorus in the background, and guitars, ukeleles, and other instruments that you'd not ordinarily find in either an orchestra or a big band. I think I'd have enjoyed this CD all the more if it had really been an orchestral or band transcription, instead of a neither-fish-nor-fowl as this is.

Not thrilled.......2006-07-11

This is a strange instrumental reworking of the songs from Ram. I bought it because in general I'm a Macca fan and wanted to 'complete' my collection.

The reworkings are interesting only for curiosity's sake. The album I think was put together by him on a whimsical notion - hence it was never released under his name.

Not worth getting unless you desire the whole set of Macca's works

I just heard of this the other day. While I am a big Beatles fan, this one slipped by me.

I love Ram, happen to think it is Paul's best solo album. So I like this instrumental version, done in large part by the guy who did arrangements for Those Were the Days by Mary Hopkin, and Let It Be. Paul asked him to do a big band version of Ram in 1971 when Ram came out, but it wasn't released until 1977.

This big band version is kind of shmaltzy, kind of jazzy, kind of old-time jazzy.

If you like this kind of music and if you like Ram, you will probably like this.

LOST GEM.......2006-03-12

Thrillington is a 1977 album by Paul McCartney, under the pseudonym of one Percy "Thrills" Thrillington. The album is an instrumental cover version of Paul and Linda McCartney's 1971 album, Ram. Arranger Richard Hewson was asked to arrange the orchestration before Ram had yet been released and it was recorded in June of 1971 - with McCartney as producer - and with an intended release shortly thereafter. However both Paul's and wife Linda's decision to form Wings resulted in the album's shelving until 1977.

In preparation for the release of Thrillington, McCartney thus invented the fictitious socialite Percy Thrillington, and even took out ads in various UK music papers announcing Thrillington's so-called comings and goings to generate curiosity and interest.

Released in April of 1977, with no mention of McCartney's name whatsoever - save in the main liner notes where he is described as a friend of Percy's, Thrillington went unnoticed upon its release and quickly became a hot collector's item. It was re-issued on CD in 1995

Ram Goes Classical.......2005-03-11

This CD is probably Paul's most obscure piece of work, along with Press To Play. Many of Paul's fans (and music reviewers) forget about these 2 cd's when going over Paul's catalog. The CD has a pleasant enough vibe. Truth be told this is one I haven't listened to in a long time. I know that the CD reminds me of something you might hear as background music at Barnes and Noble, or some other book store. Overall, it's nice that Paul did this. It's also puzzling he chose to release this in 1977, which was a full 6 years after Ram. Thrillington is for Paul completsits only. Save this as one of your last cd's and I would recommend Wingspan as a good first place to start.
