Robert Fripp and the ever-changing lineup of King Crimson continue to fascinate and challenge with The Power to Believe. The album’s opener is an a cappella version of the title track sweetly delivered by Adrian Belew that’s reprised three times later: once with jangling Eastern percussion and a soaring guitar; once as a sci-fi extravaganza that harkens to Crimson's glorious past; and finally as an a cappella closer. In between lies the disciplined, varied, and often mind-blowing playing one expects from these accomplished musicians. "Facts of Life" is dirty prog blues, while "Dangerous Curves" is like a low-key "Kashmir" until it rises to a metallic crescendo. Then there's the sarcastic "Happy with What You Have to Be Happy With," which finds Belew berating younger outfits for their lack of artistic ambition. --Dominic Wills

I've been a King Crimson fan for years. Discovering them almost accidentally in the late 90's through an older neighbor, who played me..of course, their first album. At one point however I did not really understand the complete Crimson/Fripp dynasty, nor would I have then. King Crimson is like aging with fine wine.You have to grow and age to understand that they are ever changing and growing with age. Once really in the door you realize Robert fripp is and has always been a musical, icon like genius. No 2 incantations are really alike. In other words. The early 70's albums are nothing like the late 70's. The eighties albums..nothing like the 70's. The 90's..nothing like the 80's. Fripp and his ever changing band always break new and sometimes dangerous ground with each unique and unorthodox era of albums. having said that...whew.. The later era Fripp and Belew 90's lineup scores a masterpiece with this is record. I love it. It really outshines Thrak in focus and construction of light in diversity. It is one of the quintessential must albums for Crimson listeners. It is moving, Heavy, thudding, ambient at times, and most of all enjoyable. It to me is a monster of a record. If Frankenstein's creation himself would write a symphony of electricity and pain. This would be it. It shows innocence and fear all in one. Brought to life by Fripp's supernatural guitars, Belew's highly expressionistic crooning, and mastelloto's thundering techno drumming, coupled with Gunn's spider like 12 string Warr...well you get the picture.

Splash on a cover by P.J. Crook and you have a great record all the way through. I now have the power to believe. Thank's Robert.

The first time i listen this music was at the concert in Turin, belive in me, this cd is a great experience, this band is the best rock band of all time, but the word "rock" is too small for this great musicians!

34 years after forming they're still awesome.......2006-08-05

It's amazing how nearly 40 years into their career King Crimson are not only still making music, but still making music worth hearing. After reforming as the formidable double trio (my personal favourite incarnation of the band, especially the double live album Vrooom Vrooom) and recording the weird, cruel Thrak, the band lost one bassist and one drummer for financial reasons and as a more standard band recorded the disappointing Construkction of Light. But The Power To Believe shows that the band still have something left to say.

With only three vocally centered songs, discounting the processed vocals on the numerous title tracks, King Crimson spend most of The Power to Believe doing what, in my opinion, they do best - instrumentals. Very, very good instrumentals. The intriguing blend of guitar interplay and electronic beats on the opener "Level Five", the beautiful soundscapes of the title tracks which are accompanied by amazing lyrics(1) delivered by a hauntingly robotic voice, the ebbing and flowing of the weird, futuristic "Elektrik", and the crescendo of "Dangerous Curves" all prove that these guys still have plenty of music left in their old bones. Between all of the instrumental candy being thrown at me on this disc I never take much notice of the vocal songs, but they do provide King Crimson's interesting take on hard rock as they inject it with some disorienting, abstract ideas.

The Power To Believe proves that in the 4th decade of their career King Crimson still has every right to continue making music, and that they are still one of the more forward thinking bands around today. I can only hope that we will still see more music from Fripp & co.

I have to admit that even after reading the rave reviews, I had low expectations of this album. The ConstruKction of Light, while quite good, had a drumming style a bit too busy and frenetic for me. I thought Bruford's absence would be too much twice in a row, but Mr. Mastelotto got it much better this time. I almost don't miss Bruford.
The album itself is fantastic, everything you'd expect from KC, but in unexpected ways, and then some more, which is one of the reasons why I like this band so much. In my opinion this album is as good as any other in KC's catalog. Yes, it is that good, even without Bruford and Levin (who by the way is now back in the band). Admittedly not as ground-breaking as the debut album, Larks' Tongues, or Red, but brilliant indeed. If you are into KC, don't wait.

Absolutely the BEST !.......2006-05-31

Our church choir sang a few of these songs which I loved, so I decided to order it. It is a very sweet, gentle, inspiring collection of music. Many times when you get a CD, you are fortunate to find 2-4 on there that you really like enough to play regularly. But on this one, every song is wonderful. This music is so spiritually uplifting and peaceful that you will want to play it regularly. Some if may bring some tears it is so beautiful. John Rutter has a way with this type of music. You will probably want to be giving some of these cd's away to those you love.

I had this CD on while in labor with my last child. We had a wonderful homebirth and what better then to have the spirit in our home with this music as we welcomed a brand new baby. It helped me relax and helped the birth be peaceful, calm, and spiritual.

I love this CD. My family and I listened to it over and over and over again, during the last few weeks of my mother's life. It has been a comfort to me in time of sorrow. Now it brings tears every time I listen to it. This music is like loving arms around me. It touches my soul. I've given so many away, I should have bought a case of them.

I bought this CD because I had heard "My Shepherd Will Supply My Need" once and loved it. But it's just one of the many beautiful songs on this CD. I'm at a loss to describe what joy this music brings to me each time I listen to it. I carry it from house to car and back again so I can enjoy it wherever I am. I've given away several "Consider the Lilies" CD's to friends and relatives, something I've never done before. Anyone who is facing a serious challenge in life will be uplifted and comforted by this ethereal music.

Five stars for the music, four stars for the recording company........2007-01-05

This is the last of the studio recordings of King Crimson. It is much better than the previous "the construkction of light", and probably is the best king crimson record in 10 years. The song "the power to believe part 2" is one of its best songs ever.
I have the normal (european) recording, and I bought this japanese edition because in some photographs of the backcover it was catalogued as an HDCD recording. The disc is NOT HDCD encoded though maybe it sounds marginally better. It is not the fault of amazon or the sellers, since they do not advertise it like an HDCD recording. It is the fault of the japanese company that advertise incorrectly in the back cover. Many other king Crimson recordings are HDCD, and with the proper cd player it is an evident improvement in the sound.

Beautiful Orthodox music.......2003-10-21

I have found music on this CD very beautiful, gentle and spiritual with beautiful sopranos. As compared with a lot of magnificent pieces of Russian sacred music this is a little different style, I would describe it more peaceful and quiet. I really enjoy this CD and I think that a lot of people who enjoy Russian Orthodox music will like it as well.

Mediocre for the genre.......2001-12-26

Russian chant is so popular due to the richness of sound (supplied largely in part by the cavernous depth of the Russian bass voice). This album is lacking in such rich performances. One piece flows into the next (not literally) and one finds themselves easily distracted and looking for something more interesting to occupy their minds. The mystery of sound, which so many people find soothing and meditative, is also lacking on this album. There are much better buys in this genre.

David Allen is a refreshing new star in the music galaxy. His multitalents put him a step ahead of many in the business. David's music is fresh rock and very appealing. Heartfelt lyrics and superb hooks. I hope to see him excell to the top soon, because it's only a matter of time.

Dave is going to go a long way with his music. He's a very talented songwriter and singer. My favorite songs on the CD are "Something To Believe In" and "Once Chance To Dance". Dave's ballads really have a way of really getting ahold of your heart. This is a must have CD, so don't miss out on getting it. I am really looking forward to Dave's 2nd release....it's gonna be great! I can't wait for Dave to hit the BIG TIME!! He deserves it.

David Allen is an excellent singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist, as well as an advisor! (Thanks, David for all your advice!) The lyrics are not repetative, and the mixture of music is perfect! Certainly a breath of fresh air!

David Allen is a very gifted singer, songwriter and musician. In my opinion, every song on this CD is fantastic! It's hard to pick a favorite, but if I had to, it would have to be "Can't This Be Love". I recommend this CD as a "must-have" for anyone's CD collection!

Outstanding Music and a Gutsy Performance.......1999-07-21

David Allen follows in the footsteps of Billy Joel, Richard Marx, and, yes, even Barry Manilow, as a young man who really has done his homework and can capture an audience, whether live on stage or on your own home system. I have had the privilege of "chatting on-line" with David (as several others have). He leaves you with a good feeling in his messages to his fans, and songs that one can relate to.I was asked to pick out my favorites from this CD, and chose, immediately, "Something To Believe In", and "Open Your Heart". The lyrics are great and you can really understand them in his singing. After a couple of months of listening to this CD, I've really enjoyed all of it, and am looking forward to more of his work. Truly, David Allen is "SomeONE To Believe In". I challenge ALL adult contemporary radio stations around the world to listen to this CD not once, but at least twice! I'm only one fan. But, I love music as well and there's more people than me that will tell you the same thing. It's a CD that an entire family could enjoy. I look forward to seeing David Allen come up for a "GRAMMY" very, very soon!
