The actor-turned-recording-artist oeuvre has long been ripe for ridicule -- Sebastian Cabot does Dylan, anyone? -- and short on surprises, but this warm, low-key effort by Downey offers up a few intriguing ones. Though he's toyed with music previously, the actor's commitment here is a total one, his troubadour guise carried via an earthy voice with echoes of Dave Matthews' and informed by lyrics with more than a little personal, if lyrically opaque, truth. The wistful "Broken" may be carried on the album's most lilting melody, but its repeated AA-creed refrain is a bittersweet reminder of Downey's personal demons. Spare, jazzy arrangements help keep the focus on Downey's voice throughout, a brave tack that sometimes overplays his novice songwriting skills. But while songs like the Wonder Boys-inspired "Hannah" may amble, the forceful "Man Like Me" and stately grace of "Kimberly Glide" are better showcases for Downey's musical promise. His eight originals are supplemented by two covers: an expected, if overly smoky jazz trio cover of Chaplin's "Smile" and a quaintly confident cover of Yes' "Your Move" sweetened by Jon Anderson himself on backing vocals. -- Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Uneven.......2007-07-16

I love how other posters have tried to describe RDJ's voice. I will not. It's unique and what first drew me when I sampled this CD.

The music itself is a mixed bag. The standout is Your Move, a must-hear. The first 3 songs on the CD are also quite good - you really feel RDJ's tortured soul and his anguished effort to exorcise his demons through music. I also loved Smile. Beyond that, the music and lyrics meander all over the place, not particularly tuneful or interesting, sometimes downright annoying.

I am impressed that such a talented actor put the time and effort into this well-produced CD. Personally, I don't care if he ever makes another one.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Discovery.......2007-07-01

I absolutely love this CD - especially the first two songs. In fact, I'd buy the album again just for those.

I had no idea that Mr. Downey sang until I saw the movie, Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang. Though worth a rental, the movie wasn't as good as I'd hoped. But, my wife and I were so touched by the song, Broken, in the credits that we turned it up as loud as we could and listened silently. Half way through we realized it was Downey who was singing.

I now play the album over and over in my car and the stress of traffic disappears - beautiful instrumentals, and Downey's voice is as interesting and enticing as his acting. I truly hope he'll release another album.

5 out of 5 stars worth the money.......2007-04-06

I bought this CD after watching "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang" (which was a very well done film)and heard "Broken", sung by Robert Downey Jr., much to my surprise. The song was impossible to forget so I took a chance on the CD. It's worth the money and then some. The lyrics are telling and vivid, and filled with real emotion. The music is very good, and I've been finding myself listening at every opportunity, and enjoying this remarkably talented man's work.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2006-11-30

What can I say about this album but WOW! I have played it regularly since buying it more than a year ago. I got interested in it after seeing him on The Jonathan Ross Show last year and could not believe he sang like that!

I love every track on the album and it's also nice to hear him sing 'Smile' which was written by Charlie Chaplin.

At times he reminds me of Billy Joel but with a more throaty voice like Joe Cocker.

A masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2006-11-24

I am so happy that RDJ finally made an album for his fans. This album is a jewel and hoping for future releases from RDJ. It is a definite soul searching album - highly recommend!

Album Description

"Empire has tapped into something vital, dangerous, and all-too-absent from so much rock music today ... this isn't the death of rock `n' roll but a blasting, needle-in-the-red affirmation of its power. Turn it up." - KERRANG

"Simply a great punk rock record." - TERRORIZER

"Empire's keen intelligence ... blazes through every track in a merciless assault on apathy that's also strangely optimistic, like a dove bearing a petrol bomb. The revolution may not be televised, but it's definitely been soundtracked." - NME

"While he may not be Atari or teenage anymore, Alec Empire is still running riot. This is guitar-heavy industrial punk aggression - some of the most forceful music Empire has written since the ATR breakthrough Future of War album - over which he pours forth disquisition and diatribe, railing against totalitarianism and authority in all its guises." - ROCKSOUND

Alec Empire is many things to many people: a man with an extraordinary recording history, the musical revolutionary behind avant-garde noise-punk outfit Atari Teenage Riot, an electronic music experimentalist who has made records on a Gameboy, and a consummate musician who has worked with an extraordinarily broad range of peers. He has remixed artists as diverse as blues legend R.L. Burnside, Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore, Björk, Rob Zombie, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Slayer, Einstürzende Neubauten, and members of the new hip-hop generation like Company Flow and Prince Paul's Handsome Boy Modeling School. He has toured with Rage Against the Machine, Wu-Tang Clan, Beck, Ministry, and Nine Inch Nails.

Alec Empire's new album, Futurist, is the most fully integrated vision of his twenty-first century rebellion yet. A blistering alliance of primitive punk fury and advanced technological overload, Futurist heralds the return of the guitar to the center of Empire's musical vision. The characteristic shockwave aggression of his previous outings is still channeled for maximum impact, but the gun-to-temple blasts of tracks like "Gotta Get Out" and "Vertigo" deliver their powder-keg payloads with a newly discovered blood rush of excitement. Futurist is the most brutally uplifting Empire has ever sounded.

4 out of 5 stars A bit of a shock, but it is signature Alec Empire!.......2006-10-20

When I got Alec Empire's new cd, The Futurist, I was shocked that it was full of guitars and not the usual "sampled guitars" and uber-heavy distorted electronic beats I love Digital Hardcore for. But, after a second listen, I am hooked to this CD!! The stand out tracks for me are Kiss of Death (#1) and Vertigo (#6). If you are sick and tired of the cliched punk scene and the every growing boring electronic scene, check out The Futurist. Trust me, you will see the future and it doesn't look all that good! At least you can thrash to it with impunity!

Album Description

Some have pigeonholed Mudville's timeless yet unmistakably forward music as a straight shot of Portishead-like downtempo electronica. But Mudville contorts that well-worn archetype into a stirring and soulful sonic brew, evoking Curtis Mayfield's weighty grooves, P.J. Harvey's avant-blues passion, Jeff Buckley's soaring, jazzy laments and the futurist soundscapes of Dan the Automator. Noted multi-instrumentalist/producer Benjamin Rubin crafts Mudville's musical universe with truly iconoclastic beats, found sounds and live instruments that spotlight songwriter/vocalist Marilyn Carino's keen prose and dusky wail. Her strange, fearless voice is muse for Rubin's unsettling yet compelling blend of churning beats and lush symphonic arrangements. The results are impassioned, humanistic inner monologues that paint gripping and unsentimental pictures of love, loss and the precarious state of our injured society.

4 out of 5 stars Somber Joy of Mudville.......2003-08-11

Mudville is ultra modern yet very soulful. It is electronic music that packs the organic punch of the best blues and jazz. These songs groove along and lull you like still water with a fierce undertow, found in the moving, surprisingly poetic lyrics by Marilyn Carino, who also possesses a crazy voice with the gutsiness of a rock singer but with the sweet subtlety of a jazz balladeer. The beats and arrangements are like nothing I've heard before, kind of trip-hop with a brain and cojones, but it would be difficult to compare Mudville to anything else out there. It's definitely head music and I like it more the more I listen.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Techno.......2005-09-01

I don't know why this says "Various Artists". As far as I know, Dance or Die is the name of the group, though it might have been a 1-time collaboration. Anyway, the point is, all the songs on this CD appear to be by the same people, so it's not simply a random techno collection.

The title song, Psychoburbia, is fantastic. Grating male vocals, a quick beat, complex music, this is similiar to old school groups like Front 242 and Bi God 20.

Track 2-3 is actually "Will of the Wind", broken into two tracks (the internet database just has this CD titled *all* wrong) and is equally fantastic. Sort of a lengthy techno ballad with a good pace, great vocals and lyrics.

"Black Sabbath" is a cover of the real Black Sabbath, of course, and if anything, I like this version the best of all the covers I've heard. Gives it a little bit of an old school techno edge.

"Man Mind Machine" is slower paced, smooth lyrics, excellent vocals again.

"Escape" picks the pace back up, more good lyrics and good vocals. Whatever this group was, it's a real shame they only made one CD.

In truth, though, the CD kinda peters out after "Escape". "Right or Wrong" is good, but paced like "Man Mind Machine", almost ambient, but still with strong lyrics.

Anyway, I don't know how you might have stumbled onto this CD but it is one of the most awesome old school techno releases you'll find. Fans of original Front 242, Frontline Assembly, Bi God 20 and the like will not be disappointed here. If you can get a copy of it from here, I think you'll be well pleased.

3 out of 5 stars Leeway's Adult Crash, Product of the 90's........2006-11-04

[...]

In the year 1994, Leeway put out their follow up album to DESPERATE MEASURES, ADULT CRASH. By this year, the band was basically broken up. They had a handful of songs they were working on which would eventually end up on ADULT CRASH. The music is by far nothing like BORN TO EXPIRE, OR DESPERATE MEASURES. With the loss of their one guitar player, Michael Gibbons, the band was no longer playing the heavy, raw, riffs that fans were use to. Instead of being ahead of it's time as they did with their previous two albums, Leeway's ADULT CRASH is very much an album of the year 1994. When bands like Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots and Soundgarden ruled the airwaves, ADULT CRASH seems to fall right in with the current scene of commercail music.

The hardcore fans of Leeway will totally frisbee this disc across the room before giving it a chance. Even though the music does suffer from lack of rawness, there are some songs that maybe worth a listen. By no means think you are going to hear anything as great as their first two albums. Leeway's ADULT CRASH is a victim of the time. Going back and listening to it now, 12 years after it's release, you can totally compare it to the music that has come out since then. So perhaps, this album was not so far behind the times as once thought?

Overall, worth a listen, good to have to complete your Leeway collection, but do not expect much from it.

The track list shown above is for a different album called "Altitude". The track list for this album is: (1) You must be on drugs, (2) We're so cool, (3) Protect me from me, (4) I'll talk my way out of this one, (5) Along came Mary, (6) Annie says she can't. Somehow this rock group has gotten mixed up with a similarly named group that is associated with a more classical genre, since Amazon thinks people who are interested in "Alternative Rock" may also be interested in Stravinsky!! That's a stretch, I think.

    5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece.......2004-08-04

Serenades is a masterpiece in doom metal. The music its really hard, I read the reviews of other customers who say this album sound a bit repetitive and I disagree. Maybe other albums like ¨Memorandum¨ from Lacrimas profundere are more accesible with variety on voices and instruments, but Serenades is Classic Death/Doom metal (death metal vocals over slow dense guitar riffs). In this case Anathema show a beautiful sense of melody in tracks like ¨Lovelorn rapsody¨ and ¨Sleepless¨ On the other side they have songs like ¨They die¨ that is heavy, slow and raw. A must have for any metal enthusiast.

5 out of 5 stars Defining Doom Metal.......2004-05-30

I gotta say that this is one of my favorite doom metal albums. Slow and boring? Not at all. This is doom metal, folks, not speed metal, not pop rock, or pink floyd inspired rock (like later Anathema).

The first time I heard this many years ago, my knee-jerk reaction was that all songs sounded the same. But then again, I was coming from a Metallica background and didn't really understand what doom metal meant.

Each song on this album has a core doom riff as its core, which has a number of different elements, which may appear choppy to most. The whole song plays with the riff, building on it and with each progression smoothing out the riff until the whole song sounds more 'smooth' for lack of a better word. Of course the two guitars on each song play against each other sometimes offsetting sometimes complementing.

With each listen, you move beyond the superficial (some might call it the same boring riff), and dig deeper and discover different layers of the song.

Give this a try, you'll see what I mean. And do not try and compare this with their subsequent releases - its totally different - though the sound is still there.

Vocals are great with David Cavagn (sp?) leading. They nicely complement the music. I believe this is the only album which he sang on.

    Defining Doom Metal.

2 out of 5 stars Nice sound, a bit repetitive.......2003-03-11

Anathema, along with several others in the early to mid 90's helped defined the sound for doom metal. This album only touches the surface of the doom metal scene. The overall feel of the album (by about song 5 or 6) is boring. There are some songs that are definitely worth the listen such as "Sweet Tears". The album starts off fairly strong and quickly lapses into a boring repetition of the exact same melodies over and over again. If Anathema had been able to keep some of the energy of the earlier songs throughout this would have probably rated higher, but with the last half (at least) of the album being unbearable it will have to remain at 2 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Masters of the misery.......2002-12-07

If you've discovered Anathema through recent releases such as 'Judgement' & 'A Fine Day to Exit' you may find 'Serenades' a tough listen. Unlike the Pink Floyd, Jeff Buckley & Radiohead tones of today 'Serenades' has its roots firmly set in the English death-doom metal scene that was so popular in the early 1990s. If you can recall 'Turn Loose the Swans' era My Dying Bride & 'Gothic' era Paradise Lost then you'll know what's in store: slow, bludgeoning & gothic riffs with Darren White's take it or leave it vocals that fall somewhere between Glenn Benton's grunts (Deicide) & the melodramatic wailing of Thomas Gabriel Warrior (Celtic Frost).

What made 'Serenades' superior to the competition at the time was the Cavanagh brothers' ability to come up with some ridiculous catchy riffs to give life to what could easily become a dirge. The chorus to 'Lovelorn Rhapsody' regally soars head & shoulders above everything else on the album, 'Je Fait...' is an indicator of the band's future direction, the verses to 'Sweet Tears' bounce along & 'Sleepless' is a tidy, if lyrically weak goth pop number. The only real moments of out & out introspective misery are 'Sleep in Sanity', a filler by anyone's measure, & the greatly superior 'Under a Veil'. If you want a real indicator of how miserable these guys can get then the extra tracks from The Crestfallen EP that are tagged onto the CD are even heavier, slower & more challenging.

If you can cope with doom-death stuff from the early 1990s then you will find no finer album of its genre, but if you prefer the more melodic direction taken by the band in recent years I'd advise you begin with 'Judgement'.

1 out of 5 stars "the Anathema challenge".......2001-07-27

Clocking at near 70 minutes, I challenge anyone who listens to this album to stay awake for "serenade's" entire duration. can anyone do it? I really don't think so.

I cannot believe Anathema had the nerve to call Darren a "vocalist", because all I heard was moaning..... and THAT wasn't even in key!!!

Yes, there are 2 or 3 decent tracks on here.... "Sleepless" and the two that feature acoustics and female vox....

5 out of 5 stars The Glory of Man in one woman's voice.......2006-03-20

Mudville ventures into many musical worlds on this CD, they visit rock, jazz, hip-hop, soundscape electronica, blues and soul and the snow-globe souvenir they bring back is from nowhere but their own polyglot island. The first track, "The Hero of the World", sounds like Al Green's diabolical twin, especially as sung with the provocative voice of Marilyn Carino. Carino is the glue here, her interpretations are earnest and striking (kind of like a more absurdist Fiona Apple) and bring a haunting, but substantial depth to the wide-ranging material. My favorites are the aforementioned "Hero", the funky, sexy "Blown" and the ever-unfolding "Pray" (a Bollywood-style remix of this on their website blew me away!). The songs are cool and animated and they linger, working beautifully as an "album" played beginning to end. But it's the voice that grabs you and resonates, it aches and breathes angelic and devilish all at once.

I really like this music. I'm usually more about hip-hop but I'm really getting into this girl's words! "Poets on Parade" doesn't know it but is a righteous rap. "The Hero of the World" made me listen and sway. Producer Ben Rubin puts it all in a lovely world. I'd like to hear "Blown" remixed with a bit more drive, it could be even sexier. The girl Marilyn Carino sings like the open ocean - check out "Pray" and try not to shiver.

    5 out of 5 stars just what I needed.......2004-09-27

The reviewer who described Mudville as "creaminess and grit" had it cold. The songs on this CD are both lyrically beautiful and sonically intriguing, more so with repeated listens. There's really nothing like it. Trip-hoppers will surely relate, but this ain't no fluffy, boring-ass trip-hop. My favorite track is "Othello", a cautionary tale with a dark, syncopated groove. Mudville is intimate, sultry and grown-up, this CD was obviously made by people with a lot of experience playing actual music on real instruments. Check it out.

    5 out of 5 stars Glorious Mudville.......2004-06-04

Like some exotic spa bath, "The Glory of Man..." is a stimulating mix of creaminess and grit. Mudville have managed to create a vibe that pulses and throbs with real vitality and a whole lotta sweet soul, thanks to the absolutely sensuous, yet absolutely butch sounds emanating from singer Marilyn Carino. The songs here are full of life. While lyrically a bit impressionistic, they're all about hope and lust and color and a slap in the face to apathy. The sound is a clever mix of samples and live tracks, and the excellence of the musicianship and use of instruments such as standup bass, trumpet and piano makes it sound like a jazz record from some funky future. I was desperately looking for something different and genuinely GOOD. "The Glory of Man..." really turned me on.

4 out of 5 stars Get this CD, there's nothing like it.......2004-05-14

Like all the best music, Mudville takes several listens to really be appreciated. It's definitely downtempo, and wouldn't sound out of place next to a trip-hop band, but it's way more intense and interesting to experience. Its electronic, its jazz and its blues and Marilyn Carino's voice swoops over and into you - great stuff.
