Spectacularly executed and ambitious, this double-CD marks a logical plateau for Spock's Beard: the full-blown concept album. While there's no denying the band's central irony--they make what is essentially '70s retro-prog--it's executed by founder and vocalist Neal Morse and company (brother Alan on guitars, bassist Dave Meros, Ryo Okumoto on keyboards, drummer Nick D'Virgilio) with compelling zeal and wide-eyed wonder. There's ever-so-brief nods to thrash metal and industrial abrasiveness, but the touchstones remain the glorious vocal harmonies of Yes and Kansas, the moody pomp of early Genesis, and the machine-gun arpeggios and jagged time-shifts of King Crimson. The band has the good sense to mock the genre's inherent excesses (and itself) on "Ladies and Gentleman, Mister Roy Okumoto on the Keyboards," even as Okumoto resurrects Keith Emerson's late-'60s torture-the-Hammond routine. If the story (albino misfit Snow finds corruption in the big city, eventually becomes the Messiah, ultimately prefers personal redemption) cribs motifs off everything from Tommy to The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, its message of renewed hope and innocence reclaimed can seem mighty appealing, especially after decades of punk cynicism and postmodern navel gazing. What fun! This soundtrack of the film adaptation of the Broadway musical overflows with glossy, ol' fashioned '60s-style pep. It won't win any awards for innovation, but it may well be one of the most feel-good releases of the year. While not quite as super-energetic as the original Broadway cast, the new crew ain't too shabby: Nikki Blonsky delivers as Tracy Turnblad and Zac Efron (High School Musical) makes for a devoted boyfriend, and the supporting cast gleefully embraces the show's silly-but-generous spirit. John Travolta (who gets to utter the particularly ironic line "it's been years since someone asked me to dance") goes drag as Tracy's mom, Edna, while Michelle Pfeiffer's slight stiffness is appropriate for her uptight character, especially on the cha-cha "(The Legend of) Miss Baltimore Crabs." After Mama Morton in Chicago, Queen Latifah puts in another brassy turn as Motormouth Maybelle ("Big, Blonde and Beautiful," which is then reprised by Travolta and Pfeiffer). The show's authors, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, have written three new numbers for the movie: the rollicking (and first single) "Ladies' Choice," "New Girl in Town" and "Come So Far." Sixteen years after the release of the original film, New Line Cinema is bringing a feature film adaptation of the Tony Award-winning Broadway production of Hairspray to life. Awesome Soundtrack.......2007-07-24

I had to write and share my thoughts on this soundtrack. I am a bit of a musical snob. I have seen the original movie, saw Hairspray on Broadway three times (with Harvey Fierstein-awesome) and was really excited for the movie's opening night. It was beyond awesome and I had already ordered the soundtrack. I am extremely impressed with this movie. It can't be compared to the stage musical because they are both perfect in their own ways. I was not looking forward to John Travolta's take on Edna Turnblad, because I liked Harvey's so much, but he blew me away and should absolutely be nominated for an Academy Award for this role, as should Queen Latifah. She is an even better singer than I had guessed. She was exceptional in this role-Broadway quality voice (and that is a big compliment coming from me). Zac Efron was excellent (although I would have loved to have seen more of him-my daughters wanted to see more of him too!!!! We're High School Musical fans). Everyone else was great, too, but those were my favorites. I also love the version of "Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now" with all three Tracys (GREAT IDEA)!!! Great soundtrack and great movie.

Here are TEN, ok, 11 reasons to see the film and buy the soundtrack:

1. John Travolta is a hoot...he should be nominated for an Academy Award.

2. Queen Latifah reigns in her justifiable glory..she is truly a major star. Her presence in the movie and soundtrack INSURES the message of the movie is delivered with grace and purpose.

3. Michelle Pfeiffer is PERFECT in her role. She plays sordid and evil so very well.

4. Zac Efron IS Luke...he is just too cool..and those eyes!

5. Elijah Kelley is brilliant..what a great talent! He sings, he dances, he acts...he rocks.

6. Nicki Blonsky is the LIVING TRACEY TURNBLAT...what a wonderful new talent. She was born for the role.

7. James Marsden is brilliantly smarmy.

8. The music is uplifting and just plain fun.

9. The sets and costumes are worthy of Academy nomination, and perhaps award.

10. The choreography is exciting, energetic, and exuberant.

And

11. Well...simply stated...you can't sit in the theater without tapping your foot, and you can't leave the theater without feeling real good and humming a song!

I couldnt believe it..........2007-07-24

I have never seen any previous Hairspray and I went to the movie with my mother and little sister on July 22nd and I went to this movie thinking "Oh, Great, Another chick flick". I was in the theater watching this movie and I started bopping my head and that was just to the first song. Further in the movie I started liking it...A LOT. And by the end of the movie with the song "You Can't Stop The Beat" I had become completely hooked. I mean this movie and soundtrack was absolutely phenomenal. I mean I left the theater practically dancing.

When the movie was over I went to the store and bought the soundtrack. It exceeded my expectations big time. I am not much of "Musical" liking guy but Oh My Goodness. It was amazing. John Travolta was sheer hilarity and I couldn't believe he pulled off playing a woman. But he did. I don't just recommend you see this movie. I sincerely urge and insist you go. I had to practically hold my knees from jumping up and dancing. I have listened to it countless times already. Don't Be Square, See some Hair(spray)

A New Classic.......2007-07-23

During the course of my 57 years on this planet I've had the opportunity to listen to literally hundreds of movie soundtracks. So I tend to be somewhat jaded because the classics ("Sound of Music", "Camelot", "Lion King", etc.) have set the bar so high that I'm condidtioned to approach anything new with a jaundiced eye. So imagine my thrill when I heard the soundtrack of "Hairspray" and felt that there was a new jewel to add to my short list. Marc Shaiman is a genius. I saw the show on the Broadway stage and loved it but I must say that this endeavor stands on its own. The perfect blend of exciting, spirited music and brilliantly funny and rollicking lyrics performed by a top notch cast that hits every note with the fun, wit and irony that Shaiman (and Scott Whitman) intended. I heartedly recommend this album to anyone who'd like to have a great time listening to music that will surely outlive us all.

Snow Patrol are frequently compared to Coldplay in the press, which seems strange as they write far better songs and do not appear to be quite so self-hating, nor as rich. Their delightfully dour little pop songs do touch on the melancholic side of things, but the lyrics are wonderfully slice-of-life descriptions. Singer/lyricist Gary Lightbody gives a shout-out to Sufjan Stevens when on the punchy "Open Your Eyes" he sings, "The anger swells in my guts." Perhaps a better comparison would be American indie-rock act Sebadoh? Regardless, this band continues to surprise. If you went to see this mixed Scottish/Irish group on tour after hearing their wistful, breakout third album Final Straw, you might have been a bit confused by the rock juggernaut confronting you. Eyes Open is their most straightforwardly rock record yet, and thanks in large part to producer Garret Lee, it's their best. Adolescent pop shlock.......2007-07-17

Could there be a more instantly forgettable group than Snow Patrol? I mean, let me guess -- you heard a couple of songs, they sounded cool, you bought the CD and played it a few times, and how often to you play it now? Ever? Mgawsh, they become so tiresome so quickly. You'll notice how fast even their hits get dropped from radio playlists? The DJs got bored too.

Has some good pop hooks but boring.......2007-07-09

A couple of years ago one of my favorite songs on the radio was Snow Patrol's "Run". The song was addictively melodic. I could not get that song out of my head. Last year they did it again with the single "Chasing Cars". I finally got around to checking out their latest album EYES OPEN. I can't deny that the band has talent in writing catchy pop/rock songs however they have yet to demonstrate that they are capable of diversifying their bland, dull, and predictable pop/rock sound. The cd starts off pretty good but halfway through the cd, the quality of the songs goes south for me. Ballads like "The Finish Line" are pretty weak. I find the vocals on this particular track quite grating on my nerves. I did like the song with Martha Wainwright on vocals. That was a lovely song. Overall Snow Patrol reminds me why I find "alternative" music so wimpy and annoying. Let me just say Snow Patrol is NOT indie rock. It's kinda hard to be considered indie rock when you are on a major recording label.

Ok, I really do love Snow Patrol, so when I heard that their new album was out, and heard Chasing Cars on Grey's Anatomy, I really had to get it.
and I was not disappointed. The style is quite different than Final Straw, their previous album, but that made me like it even more. I think it's more alternative rock (more rock) than the last album.
Personally, my favorite song is Hands Open, which is the second song on the cd. All of the songs are preformed by Gary Lightbody . The 8th song on the cd is called Set the Fire to the Third Bar, which is preformed by both Gary Lightbody and Martha Wainwright. This is another of my fav. songs, because both singers harmonize really well together, making it sound awesome.
I love this kind of music, especially Snow Patrol, cause the lyrics are easy to understand, and really make you thing. So take the time to sit back and listen.

I love this album. I was enamoured of the Chasing Cars song from radio and decided to check out the rest of the CD. I am very pleased with the purchase. In addition to Chasing Cars, You're All I Have and Shut Your Eyes are standout songs. I plan to check out the older albums from Snow Patrol.

Excellent rock/pop music.......2007-06-30

Snow Patrol dishes up a very good pop/rock album. It reminds me of the style of Gin Blossoms and Vertical Horizon. The music ranges from the edgy "You're All I Have" to the ballade "You Could Be Happy". The latter is sung over what sounds like a music box. Personally, the best of the album is the desperate "Set Fire to the Third Bar" about a couple separated by a distance that longs for each other. What is equally satisfying is that there are no bad songs on this album. It remains evenly good with spikes of greatness.

The highlight of the band is singer Gary Lightbody. He's not going to win any awards, but he is a very competent singer that sounds good in front of the full band to over a simple acoustic guitar. His voice is pure with no signs of studio manipulation or massive overdubbing to mask intonation or tonal issues.

The lyrics on the album are very good. They would be great as a teenager pining over love lost or broken. But, Gary stays away from the common cliches, sappiness, or just stupidity. Instead he has penned some smart lyrics for a genre not known for smart lyrics.

The production on the album is perfectly fine. It could use a bit more brightness and a little more bass. It comes across as slightly flat but EQ seems to fix it pretty well. Otherwise it was recorded clean without overproduction. It sounds like this band should be able to reproduce its sound pretty well live.

Overall I give Snow Patrol's Eyes Open a 20 out of 25, or B+. It's relatively disposable music that is well done and deserves a few months in your CD player.

The warm melancholy of Gary Lightbody's voice makes for a versatile instrument on Snow Patrol's Final Straw, artfully balancing bright, anthemic rock with disparate reference points like Belle and Sebastian and My Bloody Valentine. Aching with loves both lost and leaving, it's a voice that producer Garrett Lee uses as a jumping-off point, dropping fat guitars, electronic noise, and eclectic instrumentation in with Lightbody's breathy, moody depth. The band plays around with wild shifts of texture: "Gleaming Auction" veers in seconds from a relaxed shuffle to a shoegazing crunch, while a blanket of fuzzbox swagger calls forth the ghost of T. Rex on "Tiny Little Fractures." But just when you're ready to throw the record on random shuffle with Electric Warrior or maybe Heaven Tonight, the band lays down a pastoral ballad like "Same." Somehow it holds together beautifully, stuffed with songs that reward repeat listens and ear candy that keeps you full for days. --Matthew Cooke

Solace through song.......2007-05-10

I can't put my finger exactly on why, but there's something about these songs that I could envision appealing to teenagers and kids in college. "Final Straw" has its share of sensitive-artist tunes that Snow Patrol released in spades on their succeeding album, Eyes Open, but overall this one has a harder edge to it and a more down-to-earth feel. For instance, the workmanlike line "If it looks like it works and it feels like it works, then it works" on the edgy song "Wow" is priceless in its simplicity and effectiveness. That sort of musical magic continues during the first half of "Final Straw" on songs like "Glaming Auction," "Whatever's Left" and "Spitting Games," all of which are crisp, tuneful, rocking and honestly sung by Gary Lightbody.

As it happens, Lightbody's voice takes on an accented, desperate, despondent and poetic tone on the more mellow tunes, while his vocals have a more direct, tough vibe on the rockers (my preference). Said mellow tunes include the uplifting radio hit "Run" and "Grazed Knees," the latter of which comes complete with sweetly moribund strings for nice effect. One of the more unique songs on the CD is "Ways and Means," a swanky number that contains piano, synth, some formidable electric guitar work, actively hit cymbals and breathy vocals. The spark plug of a song "Tiny Little Fractures" also contains some get-up to it, while the beautiful closing tune (if you don't count the bonus tracks), "Same," with its piano and heartfelt tone, is the perfect way to end.

Snow Patrol seem to possess a bit of everything in their musical arsenal -- from airy, sensitively written ballads of the '00 era to harder-core rockers that the Goo Goo Dolls and Def Leppard would be proud of. If they can keep the originality, open mind and versatility going, perhaps Snow Patrol's career will extend as long as those great bands.

Another superb effort from Snow Patrol.......2007-04-24

Okay, these guys are even more amazing live than on CD, but that is no reason not to check out this album. Every song on here is great, and the production/recording is first rate. Highly recommended. I think Snow Patrol is the best modern rock band -- period.

It's Okay.......2007-03-13

I was a little dissapointed with this album. I had ordered "Eyes Open" in a previous order and was captivated by the sound. There wasn't a song I disliked. However, this album was not like "Eyes Open" and I found that I only prefered 2 or 3 songs out of the whole album. The price was cheap (less than $7.00), so I wasn't too upset. The songs I really liked were "Run", "chocolate", and "Grazed Knees". But the rest of the songs were so-so, in my opinion.

This is by far the best CD in the Baby Einstein collection--it will put your toddler in hyperactive playful mode and exhaust you as you try to keep up. But for today's overweight, tv- and game- addicted children, this is great!

This CD is a lot of fun. The music is bubbly and upbeat and makes you want to get up and dance or just jump around. It's a great way to spend some play time with your kids. And the classical music exposure is a bonus.

Synthesized dreck.......2005-08-13

Why did the producers use synthesizers for this music? It's awful. It's possible to hook kids on classical music using the actual instruments written for it - that's how I got hooked. That's what Mel Blanc and Disney did in their cartoons, Bugs Bunny and Fantasia. I do NOT recommend this CD to anyone. It was a shower gift. If you are not familiar with classical music, then I recommend "Baby Needs Beethoven", which is a collection of music using real instruments (albeit shortened - no full length symphonies here).

Richard Rodgers always considered Carousel his favorite score, even though it didn't generate the number of popular hits of some of the other shows he produced with lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II. Their adaptation of the Ferenc Molnar play Liliom is marked by three especially sublime moments. "The Carousel Waltz," Rodgers's alternative to the traditional Broadway overture, serves as an orchestral backdrop to the opening scene and is one of the best miniatures ever written for the theater. "If I Loved You," which establishes the romance of carnival barker Billy Bigelow (Gordon MacRae, a late replacement for Frank Sinatra) and nice girl Julie Jordan (Shirley Jones), is a musical minidrama in which the pair's discussion of how they are not in love reveals just how much they are in love. "Soliloquy" is Billy's powerful solo that foreshadows the action to come in Act II. Add the inspirational anthem "You'll Never Walk Alone," and you have Rodgers and Hammerstein's most extraordinary, near-operatic score. On the soundtrack for the 1956 film, MacRae and Jones are in exceptional voice (following their success in 1955's Oklahoma) and the orchestra sounds glorious, but unfortunately some of the numbers were shortened, most notably "If I Loved You." MacRae and Jones soar in this tragic R&H musical.......2007-02-11

This film adaptation of Carousel came shortly after the Oklahoma! film and reunited Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones. Although the film was not well-received at the box office, the soundtrack shows MacRae, Jones and the superb cast performing their roles to their heart's content. Their performance helps bring out the pathos in this tragic R&H musical, which Rodgers himself considered his favourite of all his works.

MacRae shines vocally as Billy Bigelow, bringing an open-hearted musicality and sincerity to his stout-hearted portrayal. MacRae stands out in Billy's pivotal Soliloquy, which some reviewers have considered one of the finest vocal performances of the 20th century. He is well-partnered by Shirley Jones, who lends her tender voice and personality to her portrayal as Julie. Listen to the chemistry they exude during the pivotal If I Loved You duet, as if they're overcoming their shyness and drawing sustenance from each other with their love. The supporting cast also gives its all in performing their roles. Claramae Turner's hearty Nettie brims with sincerity, warmth and tenderness, and she leads a rousing rendition of June is Bustin' Out All Over and renders You'll Never Walk Alone touchingly. Barbara Ruick and Robert Rounseville are superb as Carrie and Mr. Snow, although I admit I would have liked a little more humour. I also admit I would have liked Cameron Mitchell as Jigger to sound more sinister, like Fisher Stevens did in the 1994 Broadway revival recording. But even as it is, everyone sings gloriously and is given sumptuous backing from Alfred Newman's superb arrangements and the 20th-Century Fox Orchestra, when it shines out in the ballets.

If I'm adding to the praise of these critic-proof performance, you'll wonder, why am I giving only 4 stars? Well, it's because the extra sound effects from the unreleased sequences tend to jar after a while. I know some of you are complaining that the dance sequences are plagued by extraneous sound effects and noise. I share the same feelings too and also wish that the producers had utilised the original studio pre-recordings for a sumptuous listening experience. However, let us at least be grateful that Didier Deutsch and his production team have made these unreleased sequences available on a soundtrack CD reissue. At least it's a step in the right direction before the entire canon of R&H film soundtracks (yes, including South Pacific and The Sound of Music) gets its due as deluxe 2-CD sets, complete with underscore.

However, don't let this gripe dissuade you from buying this soundtrack. It offers a complete musical experience that one could only dream of in the previous CD reissues of the soundtrack. And it demonstrates the element that Rodgers & Hammerstein were discovering in their musicals.

Rogers and Hammerstein were in a different league when it came to writing musicals. Their music, lyrics and story are never alike. These two partners were exceptional and their music shows it. Carousel is a tragic story but also shows that human nature can rise above adversity. The music is wonderful and the characters believable. A great movie.

My review was not in error, as Mr. Pabian expects. The review was for the original CD release, not this expanded version. Amazon lifted it out of that spot and dropped it here, which of course makes it anachronistic. Why they did it without reading it is certainly an inept decision.

Gummed up an Original.......2003-06-10

This overblown "completeitis" has got to stop. The original soundtrack album Carousel Waltz is now relegated to Appendix status, and terrible sonics accompany dancers' footstomping in the "new" expanded musical sequences, taken directly from the soundtrack rather than from still-existing musical tracks. There was a reason soundtrack recordings were studio performances. The proportions were right, the timings were correct for an overall BALANCED listening experience. These gawdawful expanded editions, often with dialogue thrown in, completely throw off those balances. An argument might be made for expanded sequences appropriate to a CDs longer playing time than the standard L.P. 45min., but possibly only if those sequences are from their original studio-recorded, pre release-print mix -- which could have easily been done in this case. A quick word on one of the above reviews: This is not the first time the complete Carousel Waltz is heard in stereo. There were two previous CD remasterings of the original soundtrack whereon it was included. And the reprise of "If I loved You" was part of every soundtrack release, mono and stereo.

Argentina-born, California-based Gustavo Santaolalla helped shape the rock en Español movement by producing Mexican bands Molotov and Café Tacuba , and Colombian singer Juanes. In the late 1990s he made a switch to soundtracks, working on well-received albums for Amores Perros and The Motorcycle Diaries. His instrumental contributions to Ang Lee's tale of two cowboys in love are acoustic guitar-based and, let's face it, a bit on the sonic-wallpaper side.

The vocal tracks, on the other hand, are uniformly lovely, even if the selection of interpreters falls on the predictable side. Linda Ronstadt, Steve Earle, Willie Nelson, and Mary McBride on the soundtrack to a contemporary Western? What a shock! Still, they're all wonderful and Santaolalla wrote at least a couple of classic-sounding country ballads ("A Love That Will Never Grow Old," sung by Emmylou Harris, and "No One's Gonna Love You Like Me," sung by Mary McBride). And don't miss Teddy Thompson and Rufus Wainwright's sweet cover of Roger Miller's 1964 "King of the Road." --Elisabeth Vincentelli

This album is a mixture of the instrumental theme, which is incredibly beautiful and haunting, and some very solid country songs. I was surprised by how good the other songs were (you still have to like country music, though). There are only two songs that I don't like at all, and those are the two by Rufus Wainwright - one a cover of "King of the Road" (originally by Roger Miller). They are great demonstrations of him at his most nasal and whiny. It sounds like he is a French guy holding his nose and singing too slow. It's too bad, because they are good songs otherwise. I guess if you like him, you're golden; but I can't stand these versions. Fortunately, the rest of the disc is really good.

I didn't really pay a lot of attention to the music in the film, except for in the most intense of scenes. Perhaps this is why I was so, completely, disappointed with this soundtrack. I felt that if it did even half of what the film did for me it would be a worthy buy. My friends, this soundtrack is shat. It's mostly country and folk, which I am plainly not into. If you like these things then check this out - if not, turn away.

Andre Rieu brings a warmth and pop-like aire to his music.Here he plays popular music with a classical orchestra and adds his special ingredients to it ie:humor (musical jokes for the serious listener),fun,light-heartedness.It's a band of very talented musicians having alot of fun as is evident in the playing and especially if you've seen them in concert.I can "hear" the smiles on their not serious faces by their style of playing...less staccato and with more feeling.Andre and company swing and dance through every track climaxing on Ravel's Bolero from the movie "10".

Sometimes you just want enjoyable music as a backdrop to the job at hand. I turn to Andre to get me through these events. Probably not a glowing endorsement, but if you know of Mr. Rieu's feelings about music, he would just smile and nod his head. Based on Hans Christian Andersen's tale The Princess and the Pea, Once Upon a Mattress opened in May 1959 and was a solid success, if not a huge blockbuster. It did well enough, in any case, to warrant a 1997 revival starring Sarah Jessica Parker. The show was far from revolutionary, but it provided a really fun vehicle for a cast of top stage personalities, including black actress Jane White, who played Queen Aggravain (a part originally written for comedienne Nancy Walker) in whiteface. But of course, Once Upon a Mattress's heart and soul was Carol Burnett, who, in her Broadway debut created the part of Princess Winnifred and delivered two of Mary Rodgers's best songs, the hilarious "Shy" and the spunky "Happily Ever After," which sounds a bit like Jule Styne at his most rhythmic. No offense to any of the subsequent "Freds" but Carol Burnett OWNS this role. The recording is as fresh and funny as anything being done today and this is the version musical theatre fans should have in their library. Get it.

My school did this musical last year (Spring 2005) and I had never heard of it before, so I bought both the Revial and the Original Cast Recordings. Fell in love. I was Sir Harry and loved both songs that I sang in. In my opinion, those are the two best songs in the entire musical, but then again, I'm biased.

Once Upon A Mattress OCR is by far the best out there. Don't get me wrong, the Revival Cast did a wonderful job (soundtrack at least) But There is something about Carol Burnett. She was meant to sing be Fred. But one thing that I didn't like is that "The Minstrel, the Jester & I" wasn't in this recording. But that is really the only problem I had with this.

I saw the original on Broadway.......2005-12-19

Once Upon a Mattress was one of the first Broadway shows that I ever saw and I was totally mesmorized and laughed so hard that my side hurt. Carol Burnett was the perfect person to play Fred and it was one of those magical performances that stays with you for a lifetime. The original cast album captures the fun and spirit of the show.

Later during the run of the show a friend of mine joined the chorus and when we talked about the experience, he told me that the joy that was on stage was similar to that felt by the cast and that was apparent on the album. They especially liked working with Ms. Burnett as she was a giving and caring actress.

I recommend this album to anyone who wants to spend some time just feeling good.

Emmylou Harris's 1980 back-to-the-roots album marks a high point in her career. Bluegrass Nut!.......2007-07-09

I really like this CD because I am a big fan of Bluegrass music and this CD is very "flavored" with it!
Also, Emmy Lou has many famous singers "helping" her on this one, Ricky Skaggs, Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt to name a few!
I would recommend this to any Bluegrass music fan!

Emmylou Harris has always been one of the finest voices in Country Music but this one is amoung the top CD's I have and would never dream of parting with it. All I can say to add to this its one of those with not one bad cut, they are all great and the kind you never get tired of listning to.

Great - but "The Boxer" is a Mistake.......2005-09-16

Emmylou always had the ability to take others songs and make them her own. With the great Smon and Garfunkle song "The Boxer", Emmylou just sounds silly. Her beautiful voice does not sound like she is "just a poor boy" or that she would get the "come-on from the whores on 7th Avenue" (or someone who would take some comfort there). This song, like Presley's U.S. Male, is just not written for a beuatiful female voice.

Other than this one complaint, this is a great bluegrass/country album, second only to Luxury Liner IMO. All other songs are good to great.

Angelic music.......2005-03-21

Brave Emmylou made this album at a time when bluegrass was not fashionable at all. It has remained a firm favourite down the years because of the beautiful selection of songs. Her interpretations are just so right throughout and the playing is superb.

It's not easy to pick favourites, but the title track, Green Pastures, Darkest Hour, Jordan, Miss The Mississippi, The Boxer and Gold Watch & Chain are particularly memorable.

I'll Go Stepping Too, Roses In The Snow and Jordan are uptempo numbers with breathtaking guitar playing, whilst You're Learning and Wayfaring Stranger are slow and mournful with a strong devotional undertone in the latter.

Green Pastures (also check out the stunning live version on the Spyboy album) is straight out bluegrass gospel and very moving. Paul Simon's The Boxer was a clever choice for a cover and it sounds sublime in this bluegrass version.

This enhanced CD comes with an informative booklet and two extra tracks that do not fall into the bluegrass mould at all. You're Gonna Change is straight country with lovely harmonies and Root Like A Rose has a celtic feel. They've both great, anyway!

Although I've discovered much beautiful new music since the 1990s bluegrass revival, I always return to this album as one collection exemplifying the absolute best of the genre. The inspiring and uplifting quality of Emmylou's music is very much in evidence on Roses In The Snow.

Brilliant bluegrass from Emmylou.......2004-06-19

This album, in its original vinyl form, was my first full bluegrass album. It starts impressively with the up-tempo title track and maintains a high standard throughout the original album. I replaced my vinyl with CD, since when Rhino have re-mastered it and added two bonus tracks (You're gonna change, Root like a rose) that I'm told are good but not bluegrass. In any case, this album is well worth it for the original ten tracks.

Wayfaring stranger, a traditional song, became a top ten country hit and ensured the success of the album against record company expectations. This was 1980, remember, when Kenny Rogers was the biggest name in country music and the Urban Cowboy craze was at its height. I love Kenny's music and the Urban Cowboy soundtrack, but there are many different types of country music and it's healthy if they can co-exist.

Green pastures is a traditional song that shares the same tune as the more famous Farther along (which Emmylou recorded with Dolly and Linda on one of their Trio albums). On this track, Willie Nelson plays gut-string guitar while Ricky Skaggs sings the song as a duet with Emmylou. Dolly provides harmony vocals but you have to listen closely to hear her contribution.

The Boxer is a cover of the Simon and Garfunkel classic. It works well as a bluegrass classic, though Emmylou did not adjust the lyrics for gender. Obviously, not many people minded as the song was released as a single and made the country top twenty.

Darkest hour is just before dawn, a cover of a Ralph Stanley song, also features Ricky Skaggs on vocals. That song is followed by the brilliant up-tempo song, I'll go stepping too - if this doesn't set your toes tapping, nothing will.

You're learning comes from the songbook of the Louvin Brothers. Emmylou recorded several of their songs, notably If I could only win your love and When I stop dreaming, on her early albums and did much to revive interest in their music.

Jordan, an upbeat gospel song, features a few lines from Johnny Cash.

Miss the Mississippi and you is a cover of the Jimmie Rodgers classic, brilliantly revived by Crystal Gayle just a year or so before Emmylou recorded this album. While Crystal did it in a pop-country style, Emmylou did it as a bluegrass song. Both are excellent in their different ways - as, of course, is the original version by Jimmie Rodgers.

Gold watch and chain completes the original album. It is an old Carter family song and features Linda Ronstadt as duet singer. On the re-mastered Rhino version, you now get to hear those two extra tracks.

Spare Yourself the Disappointment.......2007-05-10

If you loved Final Straw and Eyes Open, you'll hate When It's All Over We Still Have to Clear Up. Trust me. Like the majority of Snow Patrol's new fans, I discovered the underrated rock group when watching Live 8. So we bought Final Straw and were not disappointed. It's a great album and in my opinion is better than Eyes Open, although that too is an album worth checking out.

When It's All Over We Still Have to Clear Up is not. Like many, I thought Final Straw was Snow Patrol's first album and was happy to learn that they had two other albums, one released in 1998 and another in 2001. My joy died the moment I played this album. Don't get me wrong. I didn't expect it to sound like Final Straw and I love it when rock bands experiment with their sound, but When It's All Over We Still Have to Clear Up is without doubt Snow Patrol's worst album thus far. If you absolutely must buy one of Snow Patrol's early albums, buy their first - Songs for Polar Bears. It's a good debut with some memorable, catchy tunes. What's more, it proves to Snow Patrol's critics that the band can really rock hard when they want to. While it's not as good as Final Straw or Eyes Open, Songs for Polar Bears is a masterpiece compared to this one. You've been warned.

This is early Snow Patrol, but this band out of Ireland has it together. If you like their new music, this is a must.

When it's all over you'll never notice.......2006-11-10

As a major fan of Snow Patrol, (even before this year, yes) I was very interested in this album because it is the one no one talks about. After purchasing it, I kind of figured out why. It isn't bad... that's certainly not the word for it. Its dreamy soundscape and ethereal vocals are anything but bad. It's just... nothing truly special. To me, a lot of these songs sound the same and if I play the cd in my car (on auto repeat) I never realize when it finishes and starts again. There are a few small gems, "Olive Grove Facing the Sea" and the title track, but when compared to other Snow Patrol greats, they're something I keep in reserve for a rainy day. For anyone well-versed in Snow Patrol, if you're going to compare albums (and you really shouldn't) it would be most like Songs for Polar Bears. Anyway, I wouldn't put it on the top of your wishlist, but if you're looking for some new music and haven't figured out what to get yet... this wouldn't be a bad choice.

Interesting to say the least..........2006-03-05

Having bought(and loved)Final Straw, I decided to give When It's... a chance. Although this album is not as indie downbeat as Final Straw it's still an excellent album. There are some genuinely excellent songs on this like Making Enemies, Chased By I dont know what and One Night Is Not Enough, while simple but geniusly done songs like Black and Blue, Make Love To Me Forever and the title song work well. So, overall, a good but not great album.

How anyone on this fine planet of ours could consider this album anything but extraordinary simply baffles me! Gary and the boys have seriously come through with the goods on this album!

"An Olive Grove Facing the Sea" is one of my all time favourite songs. Beautifully sung, written and produced. If you've ever longed for someone that you feel like you can't breath if you don't see them, this is the song for you.

The other standout on this album is the heart wrenching, and completely captivating "One Night is Not Enough". Talk about your honest expression, and I'm sure there isn't a person alive who can't relate to this song.

Overall, this album is one of my "moon" albums, meaning if I could only take 3 cd's with me to the moon, this is one of them. Right alongside Coldplay's "Rush" and DMB ""Before These Crowded Streets"
