Midwesterner Ike Reilly attacks like a cross between Loudon Wainwright III, Dan Bern, and Bare Jr. on this debut disc. A wiseass singer-songwriter with an agenda--the title comes from the CD's opener, "Last Time," and damns racist jokes while playing with a handful of epithets fast and loose like Lenny Bruce would--Reilly spits and howls like a less-focused Bern. Sometimes scattershot to the point of incomprehensibility, begging the question of whether anyone still finds the word commie funny--that's Ike, brother. With a fairly hard-hitting band behind him, though, he can convince you that he truly believes that "no limey ever made nothin' like 'I Walk the Line.'" You could call the best songs here shock value with a heart; when Reilly tips the balance for a rare feel-good moment ("Put a Little Love in It"), it's hardly as affecting as when he mourns the death of a relationship as a "God Damn Shame." Reilly's artistry is still developing, but the best moments here arouse curiosity about just how good he might turn out to be. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Thank You Ike Reilly.......2006-04-03

Ike Reilly and the Assassination play music like they love to create a special sound, and they do so with a good dose of attitude. This album is great and ranks just behind his "Junkie Faithful" on my CD rotation. I just 'discovered' the band this year and will buy their next release, as I bought this CD, without having heard it. The band puts out solid and strong CD's which are filled with a refreshing burst of energy and street-smart lyrics. I highly recommend this for rockers who are tired of that same ol' sound and who want to get some real good value for their music dollar. After you get their CD's, check out the band live. It will be worth it!

5 out of 5 stars This is not just good.......2005-09-11

This is really really good. This guy is going to be really big. He is a great lyricist and has a very compelling voice. I love the heavy guitar and the political messages. Ike Reilly is a true musician which is very hard to find in new artists. Some songs give chills to my spine. Favorites include Last Time, Commie Drives A Nova, Hip Hop Thighs #17, The Assassination of Sweet Lou Diablo, New Years Eve, My Wasted Friends, Crave, Cash is King, and God Damn Shame. Highly Highly Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Indie Feel.......2005-01-06

This is a nitty and gritty album filled with tounge-in-cheek humor and quick wit. If you're looking for glossy pop, this ain't it. Ike and his Assassination reel off real-rock tune after tune. Lyrically rough and sharp, but poignant and intellectual. Hits on this album include nearly every song. "Last Time" is great, along with "Duty Free", "My Wasted Friends", "Cash is King" and "Put a Little Love In It". Not a new CD, but having just discovered them and their newest release, I had to review it. If you like fun, witty, and sometimes coarse (yet still smart) harder alt. rock, then this is your ticket to paradise. Crack open a beer with some friends and enjoy this album from start to finish.

5 out of 5 stars Hidden gem from a great band finally getting respect!!!.......2004-10-29

'Salesmen and Racists' was clearly one of the best CDs of 2001. Now that Ike Reilly has yet another critically acclaimed CD with 'Sparkle in the Finish', this great band is starting to draw a wider audience. If you've just discovered Ike, don't stop with 'Sparkle', this CD is a must own as well!

5 out of 5 stars I knew him when.......2004-01-02

Some of the teenage kids in the neighborhood were talking about Ike Reilly from Chicago. Well, in the 70s while in college I dated a girl from Chicago(Libertyville)whose punk kid brother was Mike Reilly - a brash, funny, sarcastic, smart ass but very likeable young man. When I would visit I usually had to share a room with the young lad(he must have been 12 or 13 at the time) and he had me listening to Dylan into the wee hours of the night. Incredibly, he knew all the lyrics and their meanings which he shared and which helped me gain a more profound appreciation of Dylan.

So anyway - I get on line and look up Ike Reilly and yep it's the little weasel Mike Reilly now all grown up.

So I get the CD and wow - really good stuff.

One can really appreciate the Dylan influences. Outstanding lyrically speaking!

What impressed me most was how "musical" the music was. Very catchy, pleasing riffs. Almost as if the Beatles met Dylan.

I can't understand why the punk hasn't become a larger national presence. This is better than 99.99% of the stuff out there. The only thing I can figure is that Ike has the same attitude that the young Mike had. He probably doesn't give a rat's ass whether or not he "makes it big". His values are founded in being true to himself, his friends and family.

Album Description

Phil Pirrone (owner of Longhair Illuminati and singer/guitarist/bassist of Casket Salesmen) had this to say about the release, "It's Nate and I doing exactly what we want to do without being compromised even 1%. It's progressive, it's powerful, it's emotional, it's ambient, it's interesting. And to me, it feels like what the world needs right now......Forgive me for saying this about my own music. But I feel like it's out of left field enough, and linear enough to catch everyone's ear, while intriguing people enough to know this is something new and refreshing. In my opinion, popular music right now is about as bad as Glam Rock was, and this record [Sleeping Giants] is, to me, a record that can help change that.

5 out of 5 stars A Promising Debut.......2007-04-03

I signed onto my Myspace page one day, and found yet another band requesting an add. Usually, I'm severely unimpressed by bands on Myspace, but I usually at least check out a song or two. When I went to the page of these so-called "Casket Salesmen", I was expecting some sort of unintelligible metal band, although their album cover looked pretty cool, so that was a plus. I started listening to the first song on the list, "I'll Buy That For a Dollar", and it instantly struck me as the type of music I haven't been hearing enough of lately. I scrolled down to see their influences, and just about every band on the list was also part of my own collection. Some influences are obvious; the driving riffs and subdued vocals are very reminiscent of Queens of the Stone Age, the chunkier guitar riffs occasionally echo Tool, as do the tribal beats that pop up during interludes and segues. Sometimes you can even hear melodies that bring you back to the Beatles, such as the line in Anaheimlich Maneuver, "And know he's going to a better place".

Although the influences can easily be picked out, that's not saying that Casket Salesmen are retreading music from the past. To be honest, the album isn't loaded with innovation and new musical ideas, but the band (Phil Pirrone, bass and vocals, and Nate Lindeman, guitars) shows incredible talent and songwriting ability at their young ages. They are set to push the envelope of music with future releases, and even if they don't, the music they make will still be entertaining at the least.

The band is essentially two members, both ex-members of the screamo band A Static Lullaby. I haven't listened their previous band, but if you liked them and are thinking about checking out Casket Salesmen, don't expect any similarities. The reason Phil and Nate left their old band was because Phil believes that screamo is "one of the worst styles of music to come out since Rap-Rock." This band is obviously out to separate itself from the Static Lullaby name, which was also left with a core of two main members. Phil also implies that this music is fairly mellow by saying, "I will make heavy music again, but it will be nothing like ASL." So going into this album without any knowledge of A Static Lullaby is no different than knowing about them, although ASL fans may have a distaste for the less energetic sounds featured on "Sleeping Giants".

The album starts off with the same three songs as their Dr. Jesus EP released earlier in the year, with an ambient segue thrown in between the second and third song. The three songs have been re-recorded, and are among the best of the 10 on the album. Starting with "I'll Buy That For a Dollar", the band shows the direction of the album right away; driving riffs with a progressive edge, and a chorus catchy enough to sing along to by the end of your first listen. As the song fades into "Dr. Jesus", the melodies are less catchy, but the focus of the song is the guitar breakdown in the middle, which erupts into a wall of noise before pulling back into the song. "Dr. Jesus" leads into the tuneless "Shanghai Sally", a short break before the unexpected acoustic intro of "The Anaheimlich Maneuver". This song is my favorite song on the album, due to its catchy melody and the sheer volume of song styles that are crammed into its five minutes. As I said before, a line of the song evokes the melodies of The Beatles, and soon turns into a jazz break, complete with saxophone. Phil brings the song back to where it was with his powerful line, "Move on, there's no way of knowing, so move one", before Nate solos his way out of the rest of the song.

Another segue, "Forked Tongues" melds seamlessly with "Peace Monger", which is driven by its strong drum beat. The whole song pulses with a constant energy, which is carried through the ever-important chorus. At this point, however, you may start to feel like you've heard this before, since it sounds similar to the main three songs before it. The song itself is very good on its own, but it is probably the least compelling on the album. "Peace Monger" is followed by "Art Sandwich", which seems to be the most praised by critics. At seven minutes, it's the longest song on the CD, although it doesn't drag at all. The guitars are constantly shifting, the unusual chord shape moves up and down the neck almost serpentine in nature, leading to a very hypnotic introduction. The chorus is, as is expected, once again very powerful, with Phil singing, "It's soulless, we all crave blood sometimes, and we won't last without it." The song stops progressing at about five minutes in, and then just revels in itself for the last two, with punchy guitar fills and wordless vocals.

"Feeling Ten Feet Tall, Pt. 1" is a three minute instrumental, the guitars are more relaxing than on the rest of the album, the driving force behind the other songs doesn't seem to be behind this one. Although the other songs have the segues between them, they are still fairly haunting, and this song is really the only place to relax from the otherwise urgent mood of the CD. However, by the end of the song, the uncomfortable urgency creeps back in, and leads into the almost punky riffs in "Feeling Ten Feet Tall, Pt. 2". This is probably the most straight-up rock that the album ventures into, although the chorus steps back into Queens of the Stone Age territory. A very solid track.

The album ends with "Goodnight Jugdish", a slow, acoustic based burnout with almost middle-eastern musical touches. In a risky move, the song ends with a quote from the late comedian Bill Hicks, which will either enrage or impress the Tool fan who gives this a listen. I personally think it was an unnecessary decision, but it fits well with the mood of the song.

This is one album that I can listen to over and over, it's one of the few modern music releases that has really captured my attention. This is a band to look out for, but I'm afraid that their audience might be limited. I've seen just as many people scratch their heads at the sound as I've seen people embrace it, but to be safe, check their influences with your own tastes. If you don't like Queens of the Stone Age, then I doubt you'll like Casket Salesmen, and even fans of their influences may not enjoy it. But if you're one of the people who hears the first minute of "I'll Buy That For a Dollar" and knows that it's something you'd like, then you'll find a lot more to like within the rest of the album. At any rate, give them a chance, I'm glad I did.

        Album Description

Sam Jones' "My Front Porches" is a masterwork that truly defies comparison, but critics worldwide have compared this record to Bob Dylan's "Blonde on Blonde," the Beatles "White Album," The Beach Boys "Pet Sounds," the Clash's "London Calling," and Nick Drake's "Pink Moon."

The record was made in Jones' "Big Orange Studios" over the last two years, with Jones playing many of the instruments, and bringing in his friends to flesh out some of the tracks, ala "The Basement Tapes." Included on this record are drummer Dan McCarroll, who has played with Aimee Mann, Sheryl Crow, and the Grays, Davey Farrager, who is now in Elvis Costello's band, and Val McCallum, who's latest project is playing guitar for the Wallflowers.

The songwriting is the thread that holds this incredible American patchwork of song styles together, with Jones' distinctive voice telling tall tales of truth over swirling melodies, mysterious soundscapes, and honest playing. The record ranges from the punk-rock snarl of "Astronauts in Motion," a song that is so very biting in its demystification of heroes, but at the same time aware of the pyschological undercurrents that drive people's dementia: "we are astronauts in motion/divorcing our wives and leaving our children/nothing on earth can ever compare/with the feeling of just floating in the air," to the lush pop sensibilities of "Suit of Lights. This song is a brilliant telling of a love lost not through carelessness, but through self-destruction. The lyrics evoke comparisons to Elvis Costello, while the music would make Brian Wilson smile.

"My Front Porches" is a record that grows and grows on a listener. Sam Jones has created a piece of music that will last long after his own death.

        5 out of 5 stars eclectic chick.......2003-09-08

i fell in love with 'front porches' the first time i played it and have purchased it for several friends (who have all loved it, too)! i got to mr. jones' music from the wilcofim links page and am now a bigger fan of sam jones the musician vs. sam jons the filmaker and/or photographer. a good album has to connect and carry your soul. the vulnerabilty he reveals in his vocals and lyrics ('suit of lights', 'hard to love', 'nervous system') do that as do the varying melodies from 'smile when you frown' to 'astronauts in motion'. it's a keeper!

4 out of 5 stars A unique and distinctive voice.......2002-05-04

I really liked this cd. Sam has a unique and distinctive voice, and he doesn't sound like anyone else I can think of. I compare this album to other "personal" records that are hard to market, but that stick with you for a long time. I am reminded of artists like Joe Henry, the Flaming Lips, and Damon Gough. Artists that are hard to categorize, but that are willing to put themselves out there in an honest way.

        4 out of 5 stars wow...........2002-04-25

I'm giving this 4 stars because I want to give Mr. Jones someplace to aspire to for his next album. And I hope there will be a second offering from this talented musician. The tunes are at turns romantic & hard driving, which makes this an album that takes some listening & growth time- which are always my favorite kind. Mr. Jones' voice is full of personality & emotion: a rare & lush treat. A new & unique musical voice in every way. I'm addicted. If you're a fan of Dylan, Wilco, Jon Brion, etc.... this is a must hear.
