As Randy, Paula, and Simon might put it, it's a little pitchy in places, but not bad overall. On Pray for the Soul of Betty, the debut disc from the New York-based band fronted by American Idol reject Constantine Maroulis, we get a taste of the kind of music the vainglorious but inarguably good-looking singer cooked up prior to his primetime TV turn. As it happens, the company Constantine kept (and still keeps--we can expect to hear more from Pray for the Soul of Betty) is a whole lot less friendly than the bright-smiled, starry-eyed cast of characters he shared a stage with in the spring of 2005. Essentially, Pray for the Soul of Betty is hardcore rock 101: It's loud, angry, and delivered with a snarl, not to mention a few choice curse words (check "Rich ****"). The bass thunders ominously, the drums explode, and the singer--our star--tramps insouciantly across it all, coming off as more of a theatrical presence than an interpreter of anything meaningful. Which is not to say the disc doesn't have its moments; a couple of well timed vocal turns on "SomeofMy*****UpWorld" reinforce why Constantine had a run at the Idol title, and "Truck Stop Sally" tells a compelling if vapid story. Best reason to buy it: The easy-on-the-eyes cover art. -Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Beauty, power, and clarity.......2007-05-06

Buy this CD for her rendition of "He Never Said a Mumbalin' Word" alone --- truly lovely, simply brilliant.

2 out of 5 stars Not traditional American Negro spirituals mostly........2005-10-24

If you are looking for the soulfull melodic or jubilation of traditional American Negro spirituals, this is not it. But it is masterful musicianship.

3 out of 5 stars Great opera, not spiritual style I thought title suggested........2005-09-08

This is a very good classical collection. The rating would have been higher if the description had suggested the actual style of the music. I am giving it 3 stars because this is a very good OPERA style collection - not the spiritual style I was hoping for. Given the title and simple instruments, I thought it would be different - more relaxed. I wish a sample of the music had been available. If you want spirituals sung in an OPERA style you will love this. She is an amazing talent.

5 out of 5 stars A Glorious Burgeoning Diva!.......2005-05-07

Though this particular selection of songs may not be one the recital lover would choose, MOSAIC introduces to the recording audience the magnificent voice of Angela M. Brown, a gifted singer whose career has been nurtured by appearances with small opera companies until her highly successful Metropolitan Opera debut in 'Aida' last year. Now this intelligent singer is currently replacing the indomitable Jessye Norman in a Detroit Opera premiere and even in that vulnerable position of comparison she is making a triumphant statement.

MOSAIC is pleasant enough recital of African American Spirituals with sensitive piano and guitar accompaniment. But it is in the few unaccompanied songs that the splendor of this very large voice with a seemingly bottomless register is best displayed. Brown has a glowing top as well as a lush bottom in her register and her attention to the control of the cascade of sound is simply thrilling. Brown knows this repertoire well and is convincing in her delivery of not only the message but the depth of emotion of each song.

Hopefully a recording of songs and arias will follow soon, especially as her opera reputation grows. But for now, MOSAIC is a fine introduction to a voice whose destiny seems assured. Grady Harp, May 05

5 out of 5 stars Classical music with heart and soul.......2005-03-01

Daniel Alexander Payne, sixth bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church worked tirelessly to purge emotionalism from African American modes of worship, and derided spirituals as "corn field ditties." Starting with the Fisk Jubilee Singers and into current century, composers such as Florence Price, Margaret Bonds, Moses Hogan and Joseph Joubert have sought new, classical interpretations of these timeless, soulful songs.

I must confess, I've never been a big fan of classicised spirituals. Spirituals ARE emotional, expressions of unbearable pain, of longing, of optimism and ultimate belief in salvation. To strip them of that by prettying them up is to deny their very reason for being.

But having said all that: I absolutely loved MOSAIC! Angela Brown does not let her classical training get in the way of putting a song over with heart and soul. She obviously loves these songs, and her rich voice moved me to tears on several occasions. The instrumental accompaniments (Joseph Joubert on piano, Tyron Cooper on guitar) are gorgeously subtle and supportive.

The sound quality of this disc is superb, a fitting tribute to the many African American composers represented here. Highly recommended!

1 out of 5 stars I really want a Constantine CD...not this........2007-01-03

I didn't buy the CD...I couldn't make it past the samples. I loved Constantine on Idol. I didn't think he was the best there, but I thought he was near the top. Performance wise though, this guy can perform on stage...I just love him. This music though, not impressed. I understand why he would want to promote his original band, but he really needs to give it up and go out on his own. He did so good on Idol and had so many fans. Granted, I'm sure some will buy this CD just because they are a fan. And I'm sure that there are some that will love it. I'm not one of them though. I really wanted to like it, but I just can't. That said though, I would really like to see the Constantine from Idol make his own CD. Now that one I would buy.

You've probably heard better singing at your local bar....late at night when everyone's had a little too much to drink.

Save your money.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Rock & Roll band.......2006-04-14

I am a big fan of Rock & Roll music and I am a big fan of this band. I heard them play long before I even knew who Cnstantine was, at a little club in NYC. I loved them from the beginning and I was so happy that they were finally noticed due to Constantine's fame from American Idol.

This album is hardcore rock with amazing lyrics and an amazing group of guys that make up the band. Even though that Constantine is no longer with PFTSOB, I know in my heart that they will continue to be successful because of heir talent.

If you like rock, you have to listen to this album, I know you'll love it!

1 out of 5 stars Sorry Betty, You're on Your Own.......2006-03-22

Constantine was the subject of much teen-girl hype during his stint on idol, but that was largely due to his attempts to smolder the camera. Buy a poster if you think he's sexy. Skip this and any other CD with Con if you care about decent music.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad at all.......2006-03-19

Pray for the Soul of Betty is sort of a cross between Smashing Pumpkins and Rage Against the Machine. Constantine's voice definitely sounds a lot like Billy Corgan's in many of these songs, which I don't remember from Constantine's stint on American Idol. There is no hint of American Idol on this album -- which is a good thing if you liked Constantine for being different from the normal "pop" singers. This album is very "garage band," and I was pleasantly surprised by it.

1 out of 5 stars Garbage music.......2005-12-26

Constantine proves he cannot carry a tune on this CD. The music is bad and he sings worse than on TV!! If you can believe that! Dont' bother with this garbage.

Bo Bice has the best CD ever made, The Real Thing, and it's a SMASH hit, outselling Constantine by a MILE. Try it for yourself and you will see what all the people are buying, Bo Bice!! Buy this you will love it and will become addicted to listening to every song! Amazing debut for the extraordinary AMAZING, Bo Bice!!

1 out of 5 stars Con ROCKS!!!!!.......2005-08-24

I love Con's voice, but do not care for this cd AT ALL. He's wonderful on the Killr Queen cd though. I really hope Con will avoid making anymore music with this band. IMO they are not up to his standards.
