Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Produced by Stephen Hague, Clive Langer, and Alan Winstanley, Lifelines--the follow-up to A-Ha's successful European comeback, Minor Earth, Major Sky--represents a further maturing of style. The instant synth-pop formula songs of their 1980s golden years have been replaced by a style that's more serious and solid. The sweeping title track that opens the album establishes from the get-go a philosophical, self-questioning theme that is continued on "There's a Reason for It" and "Less Than Pure." Despite the push toward a darker sound, the lyrics remain simple but sharp. "Turn the Lights Down" is an exquisite duet that could easily propel the group back to the top of the charts. But as the tone of the release suggests, the older, wiser A-Ha appear to no longer crave mass adoration, and are moving instead towards a more dynamic, credible musical future. --John Galilee

4 out of 5 stars Well...........2007-02-11

They could have excluded the "rap" versions of some of the classics on this cd. Give me the original versions only. Overall, very good though. Maze fans will love it.

5 out of 5 stars Great for both the soul lover and the funkateer in me........2005-09-11

Seriously, we get some smokin' slow jams and other hard funk numbers. My favorite has got to be Joy and Pain with Kurtis Blowe...I'm not a big rap fan but still love Kurtis' rap in the middle. I also love While I'm Alone, Golden Time of Day and Before I Let Go with Woody Wood. Every song on the album is great, and it's perfect to listen to late at night, when the lights are low and you're working on your computer. It really helps get the mood going.
Whether you want to dance or chill, you've got it here.

5 out of 5 stars Can't get enough of Frankie Beverly and Maze!.......2005-05-15

I am definitely old school when it comes to my music and would recommend this CD. I saw Frankie Beverly and Maze in Indiana when Happy Feelins' came out (late '70's?), in Sacramento in 2002 and in New Orleans at the Essence Festival in 2004. They still sound just as great as the first time I heard them and I never tire of listening to this group. I also have their Back to Basics CD and Live in New Orleans DVD. They are always the last act at the Essence Festival each year and the audience gives mad props to them, which is much deserved.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite "Greatest Hits" CDs. .......2005-03-13

Maze is a really good, really long-winded R&B band for the uninitiated. Trust me, this is some pretty funky stuff. You'll especially appreciate it if you listen to it with Parliament and/or Earth Wind and Fire. The best three songs are:
1. While I'm Alone
2. Joy and Pain (with Kurtis Blowe)
3. Before I Let Go (with Woody Wood)

Although just about every other song on this album is good. By the way, I'd recommend you buy this with "Millenium Collection Parliament" and "The Best of Earth Wind and Fire, Volume 1".

5 out of 5 stars Jammin'!.......2004-07-16

I was raised on Frankie Beverly and Maze and there is nothing like their music! My boyfriend and I have gone to see them live and their show is always jammin! This CD is one that stays in my cd player for days. Some of my faves are Golden Time of Day, While I'm Alone, Happy Feelins', etc. You gotta buy this CD! I have TWO..one for the care and one for the house! ahahaa =OD

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is a keeper.......2007-06-27

This CD was on repeat play in my house yesterday. I am immensely please that I bought it, based on several reviews listed here.

Each melody stands on it's own merit, one different from the other but creating an interesting body of work. Morten's voice melds the different melodies into one beautiful cohesive listening experience.

A-Ha truly has evolved in their music, and this is much more mature and serious than their earlier works. Of the 15 songs on the CD, 4 are written by Magne Furuholmen, 5 are collaborations by Furuholmen/Harket and the other 6 songs are by Waaktkaar-Savoy.

After several listen-throughs I admit to liking every melody on this CD. However some of the songs were immediate stand-outs: "Lifelines", "You Wanted More", "Forever Not Yours", "Time and Again", "Did Anyone Approach You", "Turn the Lights Down" (a duett with Anneli Drecker, whose vocals are also featured on "Lifelines"), "Cannot Hide" and "White Canvas". The lyrics to the this last one really spoke to me, and the last two lines in the song stay with me long after I've heard it: "stories are painted in the lines of your face".

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-01-20

I had read reviews saying that Lifelines was one of the best A-ha albums ever, but I thought Minor Earth Major Sky was....that was until I got Lifelines for Xmas from my hubby. Every time I'm in the car I have it playing. My 3 1/2 year old even sings along. Truly an amazing piece of work.

5 out of 5 stars Just what I'd hoped for as an enduring fan.......2006-05-10

Hunting High and Low and Scoundrel Days were two of my favorite albums in my youth. I recently wondered "where are they now" and was pleased to find A-ha has continued to make music. I purchased Lifelines with Minor Earth and Major Sky, the singles collection, and their first two albums. I find Lifelines to be very true to A-ha's roots in terms of style, while very much up-to-date in terms of sound. I thouroughly enjoy all tracks but am particularly fond of Time and Again, a masterpiece of lyrical and musical performance. My appreciation to Morten, Magne, and Paul for producing such good work. I highly recommend Lifelines in particular to enduring A-ha fans in America.

3 out of 5 stars the same 3 guys, but a knew relationship..........2006-05-01

Sorry for my english cuz it's not my mother tongue.

Im an a-ha fans since 21 years now(time goes fast, or I dont want to get old..)Im gonna turn 35 this year in july, Im from Montreal, Canada. I continued to think that a-ha's best song so far it's maybe "the sun always shine on t.v. because of the way the song is structured, I really like the violin-viola mixt with the pop-rock guitar style, I also enjoy the intro very much,(organic-piano-synth combination)it's a perfect song in my opinion, superbly sung with such a sensitive tone of voice from Morten.

For their new cd analogue I tried a different approach, I listen to one song per day, so it took me more than a week to finish it off. I enjoy the experiment but it takes self-control with such a good music, by the way, you always need a good stereo system & good volume to really appreciate an a-ha song.

So I gave only 3 star to analogue cuz it's the first cd that no one of the 3 members did not collaborate together except for only one song, by Magne & paul with the title track. In my opinion the blend of the three, or at least two, obtain better result for a cd as a hole.

I think that a-ha delivered their best song due to the Magne-Paul formula(remember MEMS, Early morning, rolling thunder, moved to memphis, i've been loosing you, stay on these roads)except for summer moved on. even the Magne-Morten collaboration gave good surprising result on Lifeline(by the way I would be curious to see the result of a Morten-Paul collaboration again, cuz the last one was from the first cd), but now it seems like eatch guys do their owne thing & were loosing balance on the final produc.

So that is to say that half the cd stand for a true a-ha combination in terms of music style, & even then you can guess that holyground & make it soon comes from Morten, because of the music gender & the way of signing(remember will seed)but they are two very good song, I enjoy the drum & base tempo on holyground(I seems to reckognise Jorum Bogeburg base sounding here).

I also have the impression that Magne save this cd & his really established himself as a talented songwritter since Lifeline. Paul for his part, are still capable of creating strong songs like analogue(maybe the best of the cd, because he kept the a-ha style on that one, & the drum tempo is efficient with the guitar riff & the chorus).
But i dont like when he force the Savoy style too much, like he did with this cd(he start since Lifeline)cuz we loose consystancy. That doesn't mean that his other 4 songs are'nt good, but simply that they convey to much Savoy taste from them & a tru a-ha fans does'nt need that.

So wath can i say more....maybe that they need to regroup together to be able to reach their full potential...& i'd like to see them try a completely electronic music style ... im sure they capable of doing it...they are plenty of talent, they just need to regroup.

oh! by the way, dont try to compare them with u2, cuz really! there is nothing here to carry a comparison!...with anyone!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, brings back "A-ha memories".......2006-03-21

I love this CD! My favorite is "Time and Again." Also, the title, "Lifelines," is also a pretty song. There are a couple that have to grow on you, but overall, this is a great CD to purchase. I also have "Minor Earth, Major Sky", and that, too, is an awesome CD.

I just find it so disappointing, that they aren't able to make a comeback in the United States. They have so much talent, and the producers and recorders, don't seem to care.

Go ahead and purchase this, you won't be disappointed. Morten's voice, as usual, is an angel's sent from up above - just breath taking.

There was a brief moment in the early '60s when the folk-pop movement--a canny blend of Appalachian song and glee club harmonies--escaped from its leftist-bohemian ghetto and broke into the pop top 10. Peter, Paul & Mary--the earnest, sweet-sounding trio that scored two number-two hits in 1963 ("Puff the Magic Dragon" and "Blowin' in the Wind")--have come to personify folk-pop's brief moment of glory. The trio celebrated the movement's longevity by recording "PP M& (Lifelines)," with their predecessors (Ramblin' Jack Elliott and the Weavers), their contemporaries (Dave Van Ronk and Judy Collins), and their successors (Emmylou Harris and John Gorka). The result is a disc that spotlights the genre's assets as well as its liabilities. The strengths include the striking clarity of the austere, acoustic arrangements and the sharply defined melodies and the highly personal vocals made possible by such simplicity, along with the genre's willingness to address political issues that affect every pop listener no matter how the radio avoids such questions. One is reminded of the power of such charged material when Richie Havens, Carly Simon, and Lucy Simon join the trio for the antiwar fable, "The Great Mandala," and when Holly Near joins Mary Travers for a duet on Sally Fingerett's antihomophobia song, "Home Is Where the Heart Is." The weaknesses include a desexualized vocal style, an extremely limited harmonic palette, and plodding rhythms. These musical limitations become painfully obvious whenever the trio tackles a song without a compelling melody and a strong storyline, as they do on Buddy Mondlock's "The Kid," Noel Paul Stookey's "For the Love of It All" and Peter Yarrow's "Take the Chance." --Geoffrey Himes

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "The Kid" Makes This CD.......2007-02-13

I must differ with amazon's critic about "The Kid." I saw PP&M perform this incredible Buddy Mondlock song on a PBS fundraiser, and that's the reason I searched out this CD. I think it's an absolutely outstanding performance; I've heard another version by a highly respected singer which pales in comparison. I love the way PP&M's gorgeous soulful vocals weave in and out of the song in this very creative arrangement. There are some other enjoyable tracks, but, in my opinion, "The Kid" in itself earns the 5-star rating and is worth the price of the CD.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful! :).......2005-06-08

"Green Street" and September Song are the best tracks. Nice work with John Gorka on "Green Street." PPM fans should check out John Gorka. He is an excellent musician and poet.

A friend of mine came up with the observation that Peter Paul and Mary may be in touch with the feminine spirituality hinted at in "The DaVinci Code." It may be a TOTALLY crazy observation....but interesting anyway. PP and M's music is so positive and unique! They are able to harmonize so well with other musicians.

2 out of 5 stars Boring Sentimentality.......1999-03-30

I am a PP&M fan, but this album left me cold. The selection of songs was relatively uninspired given the repertoire, but it was the vocal interpretations that made it a snoozer. Even one of my all-time favorite songs, "Stewball," was performed in such a weepy, sappy manner that it called for a fast forward.

The use of guest artists seemed like an afterthought. If you are going to use a John Sebastian or a Tom Paxton, why not feature one of their own great songs?

I suppose there are folks who will get into this. You know, the type who get teary eyed singing "Kumbaya" around a camp fire. But, with the exception of an upbeat one-time throwaway called "Virtual Party," this album was a virtual desert.

4 out of 5 stars One more thing..........1999-03-07

I wanted to add... I generally find the amazon.com music reviews quite good, surprisingly so in many cases. It's one of the reasons I shop here. However, to refer to "Home Is Where the Heart Is" as an "antihomophobia song" is pretty outrageous, in my opinion. That song is not *anti* anything. It is pure affirmation. It's a beautiful song about love, compassion and understanding. You really should change your review.... Yours, Mark Lane (NY)

5 out of 5 stars PP&M - As good as ever!.......1998-10-05

Peter, Paul & Mary haven't lose their touch - they are as good as they've always been. Insightful & sensitive - and showing their care for all people. If you liked them in the past, you'll like this CD as well.

4 out of 5 stars A mixed bag.......2007-06-10

Peter, Paul & Mary, as a vocal trio, really come alive before an audience. To my ears they always sound so much more vibrant in concert than in 95% of their studio recordings -- and I've heard most of them. (Two memorable exceptions: "The Peter, Paul & Mary Album" from 1967 and "No Easy Walk To Freedom" from 1986.) There is something so magical about their harmonies -- they are, as a group, greater than the sum of their individual parts.

This is one of their later CDs recorded in concert in 1996, and a companion piece to their "Lifelines" recording. The concert features guest appearances by a number of folk superstars -- Dave Van Ronk, Ronnie Gilbert, Odetta, John Sebastian, and Tom Paxton among them. But there is a flatness to many of the performances that is surprising given the program and participants.

I believe the recording really picks up steam when Odetta joins Mary Travers on "House of the Rising Sun." That track really makes you take notice: Odetta's vocal is amazingly powerful and effectively blends together with Travers. The album's highpoint is Buddy Mondlock's beautiful song, "The Kid," on which he joins PP&M. It is a beautiful performance and alone is worth the price of the CD.

Certainly not their best effort but the CD contains a couple of outstanding performances.

5 out of 5 stars This CD expresses the best of folk music!.......1998-11-18

For all fans of Peter, Paul, & Mary, the live version of Lifelines is a wonderful display of folk music's purpose and soul. The special artists featured on this CD with p, p, & m are people who encouraged the group as they have grown. Along with these artists, p, p, & m selected younger artists who will hopefully carry on the great folk tradition. The songs on this CD cry out for love, acceptance, understanding, freedom, and peace--folk music's strongest elements. I love every song!! This is a great CD!

5 out of 5 stars The Jimi Hendrix STORY.......2005-10-07

This is a Biography, a radio program released in the UK as "Live & Unreleased: The Radio Show" Some of the "never before released" material has since been released in other collections. What struck me most about this was how good it is as a radio show, when radio still offered some good programming. I like "Damien's" voice, and though I do have to put it away for a while after listening, I go back to it now and again. I think this collection is perfect for iPods, where you can listen to the entire collection leisurely, as if it was an audiobook.

2 out of 5 stars voice overs ruin it.......2005-01-29

The live concert disc is good because there is no voice over. However the rest is terrible. If they would have left the dj voice off this set would be a Hendrix staple because the outtakes and rarirties are phenomenal. Includes the rare 'Valley's of Neptune' song which is a locked away Hendrix masterpiece. On this version though you have about 25 seconds ruined by a dj voice. Almost the holy grail, but not quite.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable one-time listen but unrepeatable..........2004-12-02

Four disc collection of 52 Hendrix songs...many rare songs mixed in with the hits with the fourth disk being a live concert from LA. There is narration and interviews between each song so it made for an enjoyable one-time listen but unrepeatable. The live disc is now available on it's own.

3 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing.......2003-07-06

I purchased this awhile back and while the music selection is good with unreleased goodies and the remastering was well done, there's this annoying DJ-like introduction to the songs. There's this great acustic version of Angel that I wanted to convert to Mp3, but it's ruined by a ...DJ voice-over at the end. I have no idea why they did that.

5 out of 5 stars Very Meaningful and Equally Beautiful.......2005-11-25

Lifelines is a very touching and meaningful song. The performances, lyrics and melody really come together and present a substantial statement on the needs we all have in certain times in our lives. This is beautifully rendered here. This is one of a-ha's best songs in a long and well established series of accomplishments. Lifelines is very beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars It saved my life.......2005-11-25

My back was against it. I really thought I had nowhere to turn. I turned to a-ha. I had just purchased the album and the single. Like most new releases I have to listen to them repeatedly before I embrace them. I was low, very low. I put this song on and listened to the melody (a-ha is so melodic) but more importantly the words. Lifelines was there for me. I listened to it several times. We all need something once in a while perhaps some more than others. Something to go on and a reason to go on. I have always liked a-ha ever since day one. This song is the PayOff. If your spirits are low give this song a try. What do you have to lose? I found something of true value in their music I have loved over all these years. Thank you a-ha.
