There weren't many female singer-songwriters on the radio (and especially the charts) in the 1970s--you could count them pretty much on two hands. That said, it's only mildly surprising that this LP made it about halfway up the U.S. charts (and did much better in the U.K.). The songs are so well written, the style so warm and appealing that radio just had a hard time ignoring them. "Down to Zero," "Love and Affection," and "Help Yourself" are witty, smart observations of human relations, showcasing Armatrading's sure vocal style and adventurous folk-pop sensibilities. Like Roberta Flack's "The First Time," Armatrading's "Somebody Who Loves You" is a deeply-felt and moving love song, and "Save Me" is a painful and private moment the listener almost feels guilty for overhearing. This is a milestone album in Armatrading's oeuvre.

On the surface, yes, this is a blues album; mostly, though, it's a Joan Armatrading album--which means she'll follow blues forms and conceits wherever she damn well pleases. On "Liza," she takes the "Mannish Boy" groove across the tracks for a pick-up on the wrong side of town; on "There Ain't a Girl Alive (Who Likes to Look in the Mirror Like You Do)," she dresses down a rival; on "Play the Blues," she simply undresses herself to a juicy, contemporary soul groove; and on "Mama Papa," the album's finest and funkiest moment, she recalls her youth on the island of St. Kitts in lines that flash with truth: "Seven people in one room/No heat/One wage/And bills to pay." It's also a guitar album: her blues chops, especially on the sprawling closer "Something's Gotta Blow," would give Robert Cray a serious run. Fiery as her playing can be, her blues riffs are mostly economical, concise, with evocative spaces between the notes. The same can't be said for the overall production values. Armatrading is still enamored with slick gimmicks: doubling and tripling her vocals and adding layers of echo on top of that, and synth pads and distortion that feel more bombastic than bright. Into the Blues is far from a return to form, but it still sends a tough, funky message. --Roy Kasten
Album Description
Into the Blues is the album that Joan Armatrading was always meant to write. Immediately you can tell how much she enjoys playing the blues as her guitar belts out these 13 hits.

Armatrading's Dynamic Dive "Into the Blues".......2007-07-14
Although her official website describes Joan Armatrading's new CD, INTO THE BLUES, as being "blues influenced" rather than a straightforward blues album, the songs on it achieve exactly what the best of blues music does. They take us deep inside the raw agonies and ecstasies of life, love, and the struggle to live at peace with ourselves and the world. That drama is one Armatrading has set to superb guitar-playing that rivals (with all due respect) that of such icons as BB King, Eric Clapton, Prince, and Bruce Springsteen. Add to her artistry a voice which can boom like a Chicago baritone or caress like the sweetest ingénue and it becomes easy to see why this CD shot straight to number one on Billboard Magazine's blues chart.
On the title track of this phenomenal set, Armatrading proclaims, "My baby don't like rock and roll/ Not hip hop or pop/ My baby's just into the blues," then proceeds to deftly demonstrate why. We can debate whether the "baby" of which she's singing is a favorite lover or her guitar. But one thing not in question is the serious skill with which Armatrading explores various forms of the blues--rock, gospel, ballad--throughout the CD's 13 dynamic cuts.
The trademark finesse with which she's known to dissect the most intimate of relationships are in full play on the first two songs, "A Woman in Love" and "Play the Blues." She is particularly heart-wrenching on the mournfully plaintive "Empty Highway," which broods and croons and bleeds with the best of any blues ballad on record. "Baby Blue Eyes" is a blue-grass tinged number that evokes the soulful country traditions of an Allison Krauss or the Dixie Chicks. She moves beyond romantic introspection for some powerful social and spiritual commentary on both "Secular Songs" and the explosive eight-minute-long closer "Something's Gotta Blow." In the biographical "Mama Papa," fans get a rare treat as Armatrading pays tribute to her birth island of St. Kitts and the industrious parents who taught her to: "Play hard/ Fight fair/ Live life/ And love the Lord."
From the very beginning of Joan Armatrading's amazing career, starting with the 1972 release of WHATEVER'S FOR US, the rhythms and colors of the blues and jazz have helped define the brilliant depths and substance of her work. Also from the very beginning, Armatrading has demonstrated an uncanny ability to employ various musical trends and genres to amplify the uniqueness of her own creative voice. Those two traits serve her genius exceedingly well on INTO THE BLUES, a CD very much on its way to becoming a celebrated classic.

excellent, excellent, excellent.......2007-07-13
Still another new direction from someone who's worked in any number of different genres. Her venture into the blues takes her into a harder, more electric, and tighter sound that's great to hear. Her lyrics remain as good as always. Plus, she's right up there in the league of best blues guitarists around -- certainly she has to hold the title for best woman in that field.
she's back and better than ever!!.......2007-07-05
I have been a fan of Joan since the 70's and this album is certainly worth waiting for!! Beautiful voice as always, great guitar licks - definitely worth buying!!
Another Winner For Joan.......2007-07-05
Great CD - I have never been disappointed with Joan's music, and "Into The Blues" is definitely another winner for her.
It'll take a few listens for this one to settle in.......2007-06-27
First off, this is a very interesting album. Her blues guitar playing is first rate and it is a pleasant surprise for an artist who has seemed to concentrate more on the lyrics than the music at times in the past. The bulk of the songs really do not seem all that much like Chicago blues or Mississippi blues though. I guess this is St. Kitts blues.
Some of the songs sound like typical Armatrading with a funkier bluesier arrangement. They're not bad songs at all but they;re not consisitently great. Too much overdubbing on the vocals does take away from some of the songs. I'm both a blues fan and a Joan fan so this is one I had to get. It's good, it's interesting but not great. 3.5 Stars.

Magic Stuff.......2007-05-12
I have been a fan of Joan Armatrading since she started all those years ago. Bought this CD to compliment the albums and what a bargain. If you enjoy romantic ballads with lots of "Emotion" then this is for you. She writes her own material and has a wonderful way with expressig her music. Some moody some bouncy, a good mix. A very under rated lady in the music world but still a huge fan following. Some of these songs are classics and will be around for years to come. A true classic album to have in your collection. A full 5 Star award from me.
Takes a little getting used to.......2006-11-26
I have to admit I bought this album soley for Drop the Pilot, which I heard almost twenty years ago. Unbelievable voice, incredible talent! Some of the songs and sound will take a little getting used to. But this gritty, heart-wrenching, superbly brutal and honest singer still puts a lot of newer artists to shame! Definately not someone to pass up. A compilation would be the best bet- the strongest of Joan's performances can be found here.
Worth the one song I wanted...and more.......2006-08-31
I bought the cd, first for the song "weakness in me" and then after reading the reave reviews, and while some are bit old for me, there were a few songs worth listening to and reminiscng! She has an awesome voice and the lyrics to boot!
There was one song not here that I would have liked...but nevertheless...enjoyable!
One great track is all.......2006-08-15
The first track "Show Some Emotion" is a great piece of work. The melody, and especially the singer's vocal styling are terrific.
But the rest of the collection is a muddle. None of the music or singing is memorable. I suppose the lyrics are nice.

Still as good.......2006-06-12
Just bought this on a whim at Amoeba in Berkeley. Its just as good as it was some 30 years ago when it I first heard it. In other words it's a wonderful album. The subtle irony of the lyrics and the simplicity of the original production makes this one of the rare albums that really is a survivor.
Nothing but . . .love and affection........2006-02-06
I was hoping that this would be at least in the same cosistency with "Show Some Emotions" before I played it. And was happily surpirise because I think it surpasses it. Joan Armatrading uses the English language like a magic wand, creating, weaving and expressing the varied layers of human emotions. She is talent, not just with the writing but her voice has a lot of conviction and passions. Every song in this cd is endearing but my favorite is "Love and Affection." I'm not in love but I am open to persuastions, East or West, where's the best for romancing." How can you not smile to that? Probably reminded you of a few situations along the way. I am really glad I chose to buy another JA cd. Hightly recommned.
Alluring,Warm And Full Of Life.......2005-10-06
This is by no means Joan's first album but it seems it's a favorite of many and alot of fans.I only have two of her recordings (the other being a cassette tape of her 1983 'The Key' album that I also enjoy alot). This is considered her best 70's album and I can certainly see why.Basically what Ms.Armadrading does is combine her singer-songwriter styled acoustic music with electric instruments and bringing in other styles of music such as blues,R&B,jazz and a lite funky groove into the mix.
The key to the music is quiet electism as she weaves in her questioning tales of love, commitment and confusions over the same, all delivered in that wonderful deep, husky voice she has.'Joan Armatrading' works as an intimate album lengh set piece-it's very cohesive and includes slower and faster songs.Of the more mellow tunes "Help Yourself" is my favorite is is definately a reflection on her independant streak."Join The Boys" is a fun uptempo piece with a mildly funk groove and a bluesy melody."Love And Affection" is the best known song here and it's a great one to be known for.
All and all this is one classic album (albeit with some apparent cult status) that I thouroughly enjoy and I will highly recommend to others.Critics standards for classic albums are usually highly subjective all around and doesn't agree with everyones tastes (in my case the status of waaaaayyy overrated Nirvana album 'Nevermind' comes to mind) but this truely deserves any praise given to it!Great to listen to deeply, put on to relax or in a few cases to sway your head to!
"Joan Armatrading".......2005-09-09
This is an excellent cd - Armatrading is a brilliant songwriter, a couple of the tracks felt over produced, but the more I listened to the cd, I finally felt comfortable with it. She has a wonderful voice that is warm and reaches out to the listener.
Joan's Best.......2005-04-03
This 1976 album was the first Joan Armatrading I owned and I played it till it smoked! I really love Joan's hauntingly beautiful songs like Save Me, Love and Affection, and Somebody Who Loves You. Her 1977 Album, "Show Some Emotion" contains the song, Willow, another exquisite song. Also check out, Visionary Mountains from her first album, "Whatever's For Us", and In Your Eyes from 1995's "What's Inside". I actually enjoy all Joan's music, but the quiet stuff is goosebump material.

Underrated gem.......2006-03-21
This is a powerful album by a woman who sings with urgent emotion and technical prowess. Technically? Her phrasing, her dynamics, use of flow and staccato, her rhythm....perfect. The song performance is poignant and clearly inspired. Joan is a great songwriter, let's admit it, right in there with Joni and Sarah Mc. But hers is the voice of the wounded victim and you believe her, but she is strong and resolute. I get chills from some of these tracks...Willow...this album IS the soundtrack to my life circa 1990 - 1993 Oregon...ah, youth! Anyways, if you like the crystal clear production quality of say a Donald Fagen or an Oliver Mtukudzi, you'll appreciate the production here, from the 70's? but really nice. This is an album for the highway or the boudoir, in my opinion.
Lots of emotions!.......2006-02-06
My first Joan Armatrading cd. A really good place to start. Made me wonder why I haven't gotten it earlier. I am familiar with "Willow" because it was the most outstanding song from "Boys on the Side." It's a beautiful song with haunting melody and resounding lyrics. But the cd also has a lot of great tracks. I like listening to "Show some Emotion" because of the lyrics.."Show some emotions, put expressions in your eyes, light up if you're feeling happy." JA is also sorounded by many talented musicians, you have Henry Spinetti on drums and Jerry Donahue on guitar, which makes this cd a well rounded album and very easily to like. If you're recently introduce to JA, I highly recommend this cd as a started.
Wonderful Album.......2005-04-03
This 1977 album contains the hauntingly beautiful song, 'Willow'. It followed "Joan Armatrading" released in 1976. "Joan Armatrading" was the first JA album I owned, and I still think that it is her best work. If you enjoy her more emotional and moving songs you may also want to check out 'Visionary Mountains' on her first album, 1972's 'Whatever's For Us'.
Essential.......2004-01-24
I'm not sure how my parents ended up getting turned onto this album in the mid-80s. But I do remember summer vacations, riding in the back seat of the toyota along the coast of Maine, and falling in love with this music. The musicianship, songwriting and passion was totally different than anything I'd ever heard before. And it still stands alone. Solid and brilliant.
extremely favourable.......1999-09-06
been listening to Joan's records for a very long time now. If someone asked me to name my favourite singer-songwriter she is it. She's a product of interesting times and places, but the original, unique talent was all there to begin with. Lots of girls sounding similar-ish nowadays, but Joan was the first, the best, the only.

Don't think twice... buy this one!.......2005-12-01
Beautifully written and sung by Joan, this CD is a must for JA fans. If you only buy one of her CD's, get this as it has all of her early classics. I am such a fan that I have recently gone and bought six more of her cd's... many songs I already have from this "Love and Affection" cd but her songs that did not make the classic cut are just as great to me.
..with a lover, i can really laugh, really laugh..i can really move..........2005-08-16
I don't know what it is about her songs that have such an affect (or, is it effect?...geez) on me. It's music that makes me feel, think, love. It's what it means to be a woman, to be a lover, to be whoever you are in this world. It's what music should be.
I own all the CDs. All of them. This is my favorite compilation. It's the music I listen to when I paint. It's one of those CDs that you lend to a potential bf; and if he says it's "okay," he loses his potential.
If you already love Joan, you have to have this. If you've never really heard her music and stumbled onto this page, you'll find something unique and from the soul in this music. Give it a try.
Great But One Glaring Omission.......2004-06-28
There's nothing much I can say about Joan that other reviewers have already said....but, I was very upset they didn't include one of her best songs, "Temptation." How could they possibly leave this song off of this collection? Now I have to buy the single CD collection just to get that song! Gggrrrrr.
No "What Do Boys Dream?".......2004-04-26
A great pair of CDs with one glaring problem: Track 20 on CD #2 is supposed to be "What Do Boys Dream?" but is instead "Tell Tale", which is a decent song, but not as good as the one it replaced. What went wrong?
Many lows but lots of compensatory highs.......2003-06-19
I don't know how I got into JA's music. I think I read a review of a concert she gave in Dallas back in 1995, and in the body of the review the writer listed some of Joan's song titles, and the titles, themselves, intrigued me. I went out and bought her then new CD, The Shouting Stage, and thought it was really horrible. Fast forward to last year when I somewhat capriciously decided to pick up her one disc greatest hits CD. I instantly fell in love with how unique some of the songs such as Cool Blue Stole My Heart, Heaven, and Love and Affection were. This 2 CD set has a lot of songs devoid of any hooks or brilliant lyrics (Simon, How Cruel, Temptation) but it has a lot of great songs that are exclusive to this CD. The track "I Must Be Going" is the most brilliant track I have ever heard and only available on CD format here....

Lovers Speak marks not only Joan Armatrading's return to recording after an eight-year hiaturs, but to the stripped down, folk-rock sounds of her earlier years. Armatrading here plays most of the instruments herself, as well as the role of producer, and while she's a fantastic talent, the collection has a few thin spots, both in terms of production and song quality. However, Lovers Speak is a solid enough collection for the true fan, and would serve the novice listener well as an introduction to her more current output. The numerous standouts include the guitar- and percussion-driven title track and "Let's Talk About Us," the heartrending "Less Happy More Often," the beautiful and intimate "Crazy for You," and the introspective "Blessed." "In These Times" is a solemn piano ballad, surprisingly written before the events of 9/11, that makes you want to call your best friend. --Lorry Fleming
Album Description

The Ocean Speaks.......2006-11-19
Most of the music I have by Joan Armatrading is on vinyl. "Whatever's for Us," her debut from 1972, her self titled LP from 1976 & "Show Some Emotion" from 1977. I think my last LP was "The Key" from 1983. I found this CD @ $1 sidewalk sale and was curious what Joan was up to. Wow! What an amazing set this is! This CD is stunning from the opening title track with her booming out, "I wanna learn the language of love." Joan makes "Physical Pain" sound fun as the bass line is so original, "I feel lost; I feel alone; With no desire, I feel numb." "In These Times" is a cousin to John Lennon's "Imagine" with Joan's stately piano punctuating the lofty thoughts, "In these times do you pray to God? In these time everyone needs comfort & would welcome a hand to hold." "Waiting" is a gem that gets your toe tapping with Joan's voice oozing longing, "I'm waiting for you baby." "Prove Yourself" is about as catchy as can be with a sunny message, "You're gonna get married, you're gonna be rich." "Fire & Ice" is stunning track with Joan's counter-melody punctuating the gorgeous music, "I don't wanna go anywhere without you." "Ocean" displays Joan's unique sense of melody in another lovely track, "Like the ocean speaks to the naked man; The rhythm of your heart is like a sonnet." On "Less Happy More Often" Joan's vocals are so bare, so raw, so full of emotion that she breaks your heart. "You Made Your Bed" rocks out, "All of the great little pleasures that you bring get cancelled out by the weird things you do." Other tracks like "Tender Trap," "Crazy for You," & the sweet closer "Blessed" are also excellent. This CD only went to #42 of the independent chart. For as blockbuster rich as this set is in great sounds, it deserves a wide audience. Be part of it! Bravo!
better than brilliant!.......2005-10-28
8 long years of waiting and hoping for a great album. Well this is better than that. The stripped down production and beautiful lyrics just sing to your heart. Joan is BACK.
Every play reveals a new favourite. In These Times is probably the most poignant for the times we live in now and expresses those feelings we all have. Prove Yourself is a life affirming song to remind you not to buy into the negativity of others. Blessed is just beautiful and perhaps acts as a reminder to us all of the things we should be grateful for.
Joan's voice has matured with a beauty and soul that brings to life her songs, and alongside there is her exceptional guitar. How has this woman not been recognised alongside the greats of guitar is beyond me. Every arrangement holds new things every time you listen.
Joan is without doubt one of the most underrated, singer/songwrite/guitarists of all time and with this album she has proved a point - that long-term staying power is down to talent not the manufactured immediacy of todays pop. Long Live Joan!
Lover's Speak does everything from upbeat to reflective and back again. Buy this and you won't regret it.
Wonderful.......2004-08-20
My sister likes Joan, and I've known it for years. This is the first serious listen to a Armitrading CD. Songs like "Lovers Speak" and "Prove Yourself" represent an incredible intensity and honesty, and kind of blunt honesty about life and love that one doesn't get often from the commercial radio world.
Most songs are fantastic on this collection. What better theme to build around than love. Well done Joan, you are a superstar!
JOAN IS BACK & IS TOPS ON LOVERS SPEAK!!!.......2003-10-18
A fantastic new collection of songs from Joan! "PROVE YOURSELF" is a rocking rocker with a touch of country music flair to it ala Bob Dylan, George Harrison... Fantastic! "Let's Talk About It" is another well woven creative spark with great acoustic lead & electric guitar soloing by Joan. Her ending electric git solo is ala Jeff Beck! This girl can cut the mustard with any of the high roller git players Clapton, Jeff Beck, Santana etc...
I know this because I'm playing over 35 years myself. SHE CAN ROCK! The song is a splendid blend of melody & lyrics woven into a nice knit basket with a killer GIT SOLO! "Ocean" is another great acoustic song a real throwback to her early '70s songs. Joan has produced a SPLENDID body of songs here with REAL HEART & SOUL. UTTERLY CHARMING! Check out "TENDER TRAP" another tuneful song great melody & GREAT GIT git soloing by Joan! 8 years was a long wait for DIE HARD fans like myself and worldwide fans, but it was WELL WORTH IT! SHE IS TOPS!!!
We're "Blessed" By Joan Armatrading's Return.......2003-08-21
Man, it's good to have Joan Armatrading back! After an absence of almost eight years, the woman who has influenced everyone from Tracy Chapman to Jewel has returned with LOVERS SPEAK, one of the strongest entries yet in an already sterling catalog. The disc opens with the piano-and-percussion driven title track. Said track brilliantly sets the mood for what is basically a concept album about love. With it's unadorned vocal and honest lyrics ("Lovers speak is so much different/Only they can understand/Let's all share this coded secret/Let us in let's all join hands/Lovers walk a different tight rope/Lovers always speak in tongues") Armatrading proves that, not only is she back, she's in top form, particularly on the soaring chorus ("I wanna learn the language of love/I wanna learn how to flirt/I wanna hear someone call out my name/And wipe away all the hurt"). "Physical Pain" is an edgy, mid-tempo rocker, while "In These Times" is a gorgeous piano-driven ballad. Next up is "Waiting", a sweet little song who's lightly toned arrangement masks a sad story about waiting up all night for a wandering lover, knowing full well that, while you pace and ponder (and are content to do so!), they're snug in someone else's arms. Then there's "Prove Yourself", an acoustic guitar-based rocker that plugs along at a hearty clip. With it's positive lyrics ("Some things are gonna come easy/Some things are gonna be hard/But don't let them put you off your stride/Cos you could make your own mark") and upbeat groove, "Prove Yourself" has you singing along by song's end. "Fire And Ice" is a lovely ballad that finds Armatrading dueting with herself. It's a unique idea, and one that works really well. "Love Bug" has to be my favorite track. With it's jazzy vibe and smirky vocal, it's LOVERS SPEAK's most upbeat cut. The percussion pops, the horns swing and Armatrading is charming throughout. A true gem! Things slow down a little with "Let's Talk About Us", but rebound nicely with "Ocean." Much of the song is sung in the upper register of Armatrading's smooth, deep alto, and it provides a lovely, ethereal counterpoint to the rest of the CD. "Tender Trap" is another high point. There's nothing unique about the arrangement - it's actually quite bare - or the lyrics ("We're lying peaceful in the tender trap"), but there's a certain.....calm.....about the song that anyone who has found that one true love can identify with. The exact opposite can be said about "Less Happy More Often"; this song is absolutely heart-breaking! With it's sparse arrangement and bare-boned lyrics ("Once in a little while/We share a thought/But most of all we drift apart/Haven't you noticed/We seem less happy more often"), this could well become one of the best break-up songs of all time! Things kind of come to a momentary halt with "Crazy For You", a whispery ballad who's overdone delicacy is it's eventual undoing. The song's attempt at tenderness ends up being snooze-inducing. Armatrading comes roaring back, however, with "You Made Your Bed." With it's sing-song vocal and staccato instrumentation, this soaring track could fit comfortably among many of Armatrading's best cuts from the 80's. The horns add a touch of sass, the lyrics are smart and sharp ("Not Lucifer/Not the Trinity/No one on earth can make you feel at ease/It serves me right/Cos I left you once/I broke my own rule/Because I wanted to please")and Armatrading really seems to be enjoying herself. LOVERS SPEAK closes with "Blessed." This musical prayer is touching in both it's simplicity and it's wisdom: "For all the things that I can do/How could I complain/I've got no broken wings/I've got a heart that sings/And I feel blessed." We the listeners are just as blessed - LOVERS SPEAK is a fine return to form for an artist who has been moving, challenging and thrilling listeners for over 30 years now. Welcome back, Joan!

A Great Album - But A Rip Off.......2007-05-26
Why do companies insist on re-releasing albums under different names and try to pawn them off as something new? The great compilation "Love And Affection: Joan Armatrading Classics 1975-1983) is still on the market. This is track for track, even in it's order, the same as that. If you like Joan Armatrading definitely buy ONE of these two wonderful compilations, but DO NOT buy BOTH unless you have some money you feel like throwing away. And for that matter, if you want to throw it away, just mail it to me!!

Joan at her best.......2006-01-20
This is a very fine collection. It seems to have all of the best songs recorded by Joan during this period, including many that I had never heard before. My favorite tracks are Show Some Emotion, I'm Lucky, and Me, Myself, I. No one had a blend quite like Joan's; part rock, part folk, and part jazz. This blend is most apparent on disc one, disc two has tracks that are closer to the realm of pop with mixed results. I don't care for the last third of disc two, and especially dislike I Love it When You Call Me Names, a sadistic homage to domestic violence. What could Joan have been thinking? Nonetheless, there is an embarassment of riches on these two cd's, and they'll be spinning in my system for years to come.
Best of from 1975-1983.......2005-08-09
A great overlook of Joans time at A&M Records from 1975-1983. The 43 songs on this two disc collection include a soundtrack song and studio songs that were tacked on a live album and two "new" songs that were incuded on a greatest hits album. Me, Myself, I was her most popular album, and there are 8 of the ten songs from it included here. Don't know why record companies do that. Seems that if it were her most popular album, then all the fans must already have it and would like to hear other songs. This CD is a great overview of a career in motion. The songs are in cronological order and the listener can hear the growth and change of her talent thru the years. Highly recommended. Liner notes are only so-so.

A genuine gem.......2007-04-17
Joan Armatrading has been giving us the best of her in all of her songs since 1975..wait.1972.Unbeknownst to me and many others, this album was released in 1972 and only now did I get to exploring it.Discovering the unusual grace of the title track and the poignance in MY FAMILY and GIVE IT A TRY has been a worthwhile journey. The esoteric charm wrapped about VISIONARY MOUNTAINS and the messages of hymns adorned by the basics of piano and guitar such as ALICE and SPEND A LITTLE TIME make this work one of her best.
USED TO BE HARD TO FIND.......2004-10-11
Used to be that this cd was a hard to find classic. It was re-released a couple years ago with 2 extra songs, so it should be readily available in your local record store. I I found this cd years ago and scooped it up and was glad that I did. It is classic Armatrading. On this cd, she co-wrote the songs with a woman named Pam Nestor. Not sure why that partneship ended, because this is some of the most beautiful music I have heard. I love the opener, "my Family". It makes me think of how the 60's and early 70's must have been like, with the attitude that we are all brothers and sisters. I also like "It Could Have Been Better" and "All the Kings Gardens". Check this one out along with "Back to the Night".
a rare and delicate thing.........2004-09-22
...glad to know I'm not the only one who thinks 'It Could Have Been Better' is one of the most beautiful, bittersweet yet virtually unknown songs around. 'Gave It a Try' and 'City Girl' come close too...
Chills.......2003-05-28
I confess I have not been a big Joan Armatrading fan, mostly through ignorance. I have not heard all the contents of this release yet but I felt compelled to comment on one cut in particular that I am familiar with. I have owned this piece for more than 20 years -- as released on a "teaser" anthology of music on behalf of Altec-Lansing (the speaker people) entitled "Odyssey." Included on the disc are Sheryl Dilcher, The Strawbs, Rick Wakeman, Sandy Denny and Quincy Jones. The Armatrading title I refer to is "It Could Have Been Better," which was taken from the Whatever's For Us album. To my mind, not only is this the highlight of the "Odyssey" recording, it may well be the greatest piece of popular music to have never been a major hit. The lush orchestral accompaniment is without peer in contrast to Joan's understated vocal rendition. This piece is so well done it sends chills down my spine every time I hear it. If you haven't had this treat, I urge you to indulge yourself ... if only for this one piece of music.
Early Joan work essential listening.......2003-05-25
'Whatever's For Us' was once a difficult album to find, and is probably why alot of people thought that her career began with 1976's self titled album.
'Whatever's For Us' is simply a stunning album with some beautiful piano playing. Highlights include 'Alice' and 'It Could Have Been Better'. The opening track 'My Family' is the perfect choice, and as the inner sleeve notes suggest, very early Elton John sounding.
The repackaged CD allows us all to truly appreciate the beginning of Joan Armatrading, who in my opinion is underrated in many countries. This CD also includes a bonus single which was also previously hard to find.
If you buy this, then the album "Joan Armatrading", you will really appreciate this fine artist. Two listens of the song "Love and Affection" will cement your thoughts on how great she is.

Joan Armatrading has long been one of the finest singers in Anglo-American pop. The Caribbean-born, British-based vocalist has a rich, low alto which she uses to stretch and twist phrases, loading them with new implications in the style of her hero Van Morrison. Armatrading, who wrote, arranged and coproduced (with David Tickle) the album, has surrounded herself with top musicians formerly associated with the Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, Eric Clapton, Sting, Peter Gabriel, Joni Mitchell, and Al Green. She more than holds her own, not only as a singer but also as the lead guitarist. She sings the first verse of "Merchant of Love," for example, with the deflating, sad sigh of someone who has heard too many lies from too many lovers. --Geoffrey Himes
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful.......2007-02-20
This is a wonderful CD, but the there are three songs that will probably stand out for most and again, it exhibits JA's ability to reach deep down inside and bring it out with mind blowing lyricism. "Merchant of Love" is so heartbreaking, just listen to the words... "you're selling emotions that i can't buy, don't want the sadness, prices far too high, and i don't, I don't need your packaged lies.." and the minimal acompaniment of a piano, acoustic guitar and scratching drum is understated. "Beyond the Blue" a lover's appreciation for someone who brings the best out of her. And finally "In Your Eyes" . . . "in your eyes, i can see, i can see something so sure, and those eyes are not for hurting" inspiring, melodious, how can you not adore Joan Armatrading. Again, highly recommended CD, I bought mine used since there isn't any re-issue, so i really appreciate fellow amazoners who are willing to part with theirs for the rest of us late commers to enjoy.
Joan!.......2006-02-06
Another fine outing from Joan Armatrading. "In Your Eyes", "Merchant of Love" and "Spapes and Sizes" rank up there with her best work. While not ber best album, What's Inside is worth the purchase for any serious Joan fan. Causal fans should get her Greatest Hits.
This is the one!.......2004-02-04
Greetings from beautiful downtown Poughkeepsie!
Most people (including myself) adore Joan's 3rd CD 'Joan Armatrading' but I think "What's Inside" is her best work to date! What a great CD! The songs are all so rich and warm.
Joan plays all the guitars - gotta love that! You'll play this CD every now and then for years and years...
1.In Your Eyes - Joan coos through a nice soft intro song over synths and snare drums.
2.Everyday Boy - Song builds up brilliantly with guitars, piano, string, drums and of course, Joan, in a "poignant" tale (what an overused word). I must say, there are 3 words in this song that disturb me.
3. Merchant of Love - Another gem, Joan's voice is soft and longing, the piano and guitar intertwine beautifully throughout.
4. Shapes and Sizes - Kronos Quartet join in on this great song with a creepy important message "obituary columns are filled with love"
5. Back on the Road - the only possible throwaway - but does feature great acoustic guitar playing by Joan.
6. Lost the Love - yeah baby! Joan throws down on some serious blues guitar licks. Takes her time! Love this song!
7. Songs - beautiful song with lots of strings!
8. Would you like to Dance - funky little midtempo song with triple echo vocals and perhaps a little too much falsetto but still great. Nice solo sax!
9. Recommend My Love - see number 8 above. Keyboards are very cool..
10. Beyond the Blue - a little bit country, a little bit gospel ...acoustic guitars remind me of 'down to zero' - Joan seems to be having fun. She gets 'honey from the bee..DUH'
11. I cant stop loving you - Definitely having fun here...funky horns and baseline, goofy lyrics and an occasional wacky noise (he he he), funny repetitive singing of 'i cant stop, i cant stop, i cant stop '...and what is that one off beat drum doing about 2/3rds of the way through the song?
12. Shape of a Pony - nice light song with a bit of an island feel to it (no, not reggae) - I totally get this song.
13. Trouble - You may not agree but I think this song is a masterpiece. Joan sings her heart out over sweeping strings, distant echoing drums, and simple soulful keyboards. I have to play this song twice when I get to it.
Well, I've said too much. Clearly I get Joan. Hopefully you will too.
Completely enjoyable and relaxing!.......2002-03-04
It was back in the later 70's and on the radio I heard something by Joan Armatrading, and I doubt if I will ever remember what the song was and forgot about her. Forward to the later 90's and I heard a song on the radio and discovered it was Joan Armatrading. I knew I had to get into her music in that it heightened my awareness to her smooth voice with varying vocal range.
This is my second CD of hers. I love this one, I can relax and know that the tempo and beat is soothing. Not knowing her songs, my favorite is "Everyday Boy" Her lyrical writing style is powerful and true to her spirit. Musically, the strings section stands out; there is also excellent background vocals to enhance her music. And, one more note: Her favorite singer/songwriter is VAN MORRISON, WOW! I LOVE HIM TOO! .....MzRizz
Every Single Song is Amazing.......2001-07-17
I was not prepared for how good this CD is, even though Joan is amazing and every one of her CDs is great and unique. What is so incredible about this CD is that each time I listen to it, I have a different favorite song. First, it was Merchant of Love (love the lyrics), then it was Shape of a Pony (which is infectious but not in a pop rock sort of way), then it was Would You Like to Dance (also, love the lyrics), then it was In Your Eyes (so haunting; what a great start to a CD). But, after I saw Joan in concert in 1999 and heard her talk about Everyday Boy and the meaning behind it, that rocketed to the top of the list. It's meaningful, beautiful, emotional, just like the entire album.
