Counterparts Shifts The Rush Sound Once Again.......2007-07-11
Animate - Great driving opener. Animate pushes the new Rush envelope, creating a heavy, pounding groove that we haven't heard in years. Excellent start.
Stick It Out - At first I hated this song. It sounded like Rush trying to be someone else trying to sound like Rush. Does that make sense? Alternative or metal clones of Rush. After a couple of hundred listens, it's one of the better songs on this album. Again, the mauling, crushing sound that Rush manages to create while still staying true to Rush is enthralling.
Cut To The Chase - Like Roll The Bones, Counterparts boasts most of its good tunes at the beginning. This is a great song and the solo is one of Alex's shining spots on the album. Tight. Killer.
Nobody's Hero - Haunting. This is one of those songs like Afterimage or Losing It that creeps you out and gives you chills and makes you like it all the same. Honest. Meaningful. Classic.
Between Sun & Moon - This song is so f*cking driven it just plain rocks. The first time I listened to Counterparts, this was the one song that stood out the most. Great!
Alien Shore - Alex is definitely rocking on here. Slave to the hormone, body and soul. Neil's lyrics lift this obscure song to the surface. Complex.
The Speed Of Love - Hmmm. It's all right. Mediocre? Would I go that far? Maybe. This song drags. Downer. Boring.
Double Agent - When you start getting used to the songs on Counterparts, get familiar with them, you start to realize that Alex has the guitar sound from hell on this album. The trippy Geddy vocals distorted to Necromancer-esque quality make me flinch. This song has the potential in places to be great, but it just misses. The music is very cool.
Leave That Thing Alone - Two instrumentals in two albums after a decade- long hiatus. All right! Whenever Rush decides to do this, you know it's going to be good. Leave That Thing Alone rocks out loud. I can't ever get tired of hearing Alex, Geddy & Neil just jamming away. Perfection.
Cold Fire - The opening Alex riff is killer. This deep into the album, you start to get tired. That is the biggest problem with Rush ever since they entered the Age of CD (Hold Your Fire). They want to give you a full CD worth of songs, but towards the end it becoms tedious. This is the name of a Dean R. Koontz book that I once read. I hated that book. I don't hate this song, but it's never going to be one of my favorites. Too bad because Alex wails on this song.
Everyday Glory - I don't think I've ever heard this song.... Just kidding. God, I can't tell you that I think this song is good. It feels like filler to me and that isn't in the Rush repitoire to have filler tunes, but it is extremely bland.
Overall, Counterparts finds Rush creating a sonic redecoration of themselves. Heavy, for sure. Once again, the musicianship is excellent. Rush doesn't get sloppy with their song structures, they just miss the hooks. Every song can't be memorable, can it? Long gone are the days of Hemispheres and Signals and Power Windows. This is newer (older) Rush. As usual, there are some gems and some yawners. Not the best album they've ever created. People who think that should seek treatment for delusions of grandeur. Good, but not great.
Dig it!
I Second That..........2007-06-02
My favorite rock album ever........2007-05-26
Light at the end of the tunnel.......2007-05-24
That was several years ago. Very recently, something made me want to hear more Rush. I bought Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows, Hold Your Fire, and Roll the Bones. As soon as I started listening to Grace Under Pressure, I knew that I had been right to stop buying albums after Signals. Such ineffectual, weaksauce synth drivel. Then I moved on to Power Windows, and I was absolutely certain that the album was in fact a dimensional doorway that led straight to Hell. I contemplated suicide at least 12 times before the album was over. It sounded like the soundtrack to the most generic mid-80s inspirational teen movie you can imagine. I could close my eyes and see some spotty faced kid training hard to learn martial arts, pushing himself too hard, failing, and then getting up and trying harder... sweet Lord, it was unbearable. Hold Your Fire was a mild improvement, or at least slightly less painful. Still quite horrid and much too 'lite rock' for my tastes. Roll the Bones was another slight improvement. It was nice to hear more guitars and almost no keys.
And then finally this morning I came to Counterparts. Not a return to form, but definitely the sound of a band who had finally remembered after many long years how good it feels to simply ROCK. This is the best thing they'd done since Moving Pictures, hands down. This makes all the pain and suffering I endured listening to mid-80s Rush all worth it, because it puts this album into context.
For the record, I just finished listening to Test For Echo, which is good but not as good as Counterparts. Right now I'm taking in my first listen of Vapor Trails... which I can already tell is their hardest and heaviest album ever. Tomorrow I believe I shall pick up a copy of Snakes & Arrows.
Finally some recognition for Counterparts!!!!.......2007-05-18

The production on Counterparts is a bit too smooth, which means that the passion that normally infuses Rush's music (and prevents it from being too coldly intellectual) is weakened. The songs themselves are good, including the singles "Animate", "Nobody's Hero", and "Stick It Out". Other standouts are "Cut to the Chase" and "Cold Fire". Though Rush's brand of slick, sophisticated progressive rock isn't exactly trendy, it is what they do best, and they've wisely stuck to it. Therefore, although Counterparts isn't on a par with Moving Pictures or Permanent Waves, it's still a strong effort. --Genevieve WilliamsCustomer Reviews:
Rush - a band that keeps on keeping on with "Counterparts".......2007-02-01
Don't take uplifting as something heartfelt or light, because there is still plenty of electric power on here that is backed by the Canadian Trio's masterful musicianship. The single "Stick it out" is stoic and steadfast, and still remains a staple of their modern material to date. Themes of despair as well as hope are still prevalent, as well as a touch in the songwriting that once again hinges often on societal storylines. "Cut to the Chase" is a rollicking rocker that still features vocalist Geddy Lee belting out soulful tones that are encompassed by Alex Liefson's guitar. "Between Sun and Moon" starts out with a powerful and dark opening that features one of the greatest drummers of all time in Neil Peart. This song has some changeups that are energetic and soulful. To me it is by far one of the best tracks on the album.
"Alien Shore" is a beautifully written song that never climbs to high but has a lot of meaning behind the words. "Double Agent" seems to stem into different territory as it has a narrative style to it that doesn't feature Geddy on vocals the entire time. "Cold Fire" is another staple from their modern catalog and is a great rocking tune that is top notch in catchy tones and memorable lyrics.
The album is fairly smooth and despite it often getting cut down by many when compared to what came before it, this listener prefers to judge it on its own. Counterparts is in between the lines of the Rush Empire, but still to me is a complete, enjoyable album. If you are new to Rush, I suggest you start at the beginning, as their music is a journey as much as it is simply superb musicianship. When you get to Counterparts, just don't overlook it, because each Rush album has its place in the sun.
Rush's 2nd best album ?.......2007-01-15
Signals (1982) ~3.3 stars
Grace Under Pressure ~4.0 stars <==Rush's 3rd best album ?
Power Windows (1985) ~3.8 stars, nearly as good as Grace Under Pressure.
Hold Your Fire (1987) ~3.7 stars,
Roll The Bones (1991) ~3.4 stars,
CounterParts (1993) ~4.2 stars, <==I recommend Counterparts.
Test For Echo (1996) ~3.4 stars,
Vapor Trails (2002) ~4.6 stars. <==WOW! RUSH's best album?
[In general with the older CDs, pay attention to re-mastered vs original release, make sure which alternative sounds better to you.]
I rate on an absolute scale, so 4 out of 5 rating is really enjoyable music. In my opinion, most big name pop albums rate only 2 or 3 stars.
Up there with Signals and Moving pictures for consistency.......2006-06-20
Animate- 11/10- Easily the best on the album. This song would be the best on a lot of albums. I like how it's rocking and going really fast then suddenly it's a ballad, then it picks up again. Awesome.
Stick It Out- 10/10- You're coming off the high of Animate and you encounter another really good song. Very heavy, but very catch melody.
Cut to the Chase- 10/10- And that's for the lyrics alone!!! The music just compliments!
Nobody's Hero- 9.5/10- Okay, the first verse is awkward, so I'll take 0.5 points off. Don't use the word "sexuality" in an emotional song.
Between Sun and Moon- 9/10- Not as flourishing as the rest. Lyrics are kind of dumb "Ahh yes to yes to ahh yes to ah...." What?
Alien Shore- 9.5/10- Cool!
The Speed of Love- 8.5/10- The worst on the album. Not bad, just kind of meh... Ya know...
Leave That Thing Alone- 10/10- Funky bassline. Just cool in general
Cold Fire- 10/10- Just because it's commercial doesn't mean it's bad! It's catchy, like The Spirit of Radio, but in a VERY different way.
Everyday Glory- 10/10- Caps off the album very well.
In conclusion: I would not recommend starting your Rush catalogue with this album, I'd recommend Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, or Signals, but maybe your 5th or 6th buy. Gets a 9.9/10 from me because it's not quite perfect, but it's consistently very good.
A disappointment.......2006-03-03
I still saw them twice on that tour, and the songs weren't any better live.
Catchy Songs, But a Few Bad Ones Too.......2005-07-18
Roll the Bones, Moving Pictures, Permanent Waves) and this album (to me) is better than FBN, HYF, and PW). Here's the tracks.
1. Animate-3/5-(It's not that this is a bad song, but the chorus sounds...stupid. Peart's drumming shines.)
2. Stick It Out-5/5-(Great lyrics and gets stuck in your head)
3. Cut to the Chase-5/5-(I like this song a lot. Chorus is well written)
4. Nobody's Hero-5/5-(A powerful Rush song. An awkward first verse spawns one of their best songs)
5. Between Sun & Moon-5/5-(Really catchy, chorus is great although a bit strange. I love it)
6. Alien Shore-2/5-(Too long. Nothing is really that good about the song)
7. The Speed of Love-3/5-(As with all love songs written by Neil Peart, lyrics are interesting but song just doesn't hold itself up)
8. Double Agent-1/5-(I don't know what's up with this song. It's just bad. Bad music, bad lyrics, stupid part with Geddy Lee talking...Worst song on the album)
9. Leave That Thing Alone-5/5-(Great instrumental. Bass line is great.)
10. Cold Fire-5/5-(Drums are great. Catchy song, interesting lyrics)
11. Everyday Glory-5/5-(Powerful lyrics, Geddy Lee sings them with a lot of feeling)
