A founding member of Pink Floyd who suffered a mental breakdown in the late '60s, Syd Barrett is revered in some circles for his singular vision. While outtake recordings that have surfaced have sadly shown much of his psychic dislocation, his two solo albums he released have much idiosyncratic beauty to offer. Barrett is the second solo album, joining The Madcap Laughs as a solid representation of Barrett's innate tunefulness and bizarre, surrealist imagery. Produced by the Floyd's David Gilmour and Rick Wright and featuring Humble Pie's Jerry Shirley on drums, the album veers from lighthearted shuffling jug band tunes to the grand and majestic "Baby Lemonade," possibly Barrett's finest song. Several other Barrett staples such as "Dominoes," "Rats," "Gigolo Aunt," and "Effervescing Elephant" showcase Barrett's knack for unexpected chord changes and inventive rhythmic breaks. Ironically, Barrett's music is not some heavy "acid rock" trip but a free-spirited, openly optimistic, and folkie journey through one man's unusual mind. --Rob O'Connor

Capture the essence of a live show!.......2007-06-03
For older fans, it showcases their best work, with fresh recordings and pleasurable stylized versions of songs. These unique performances give a variety to those who already own the original CDs, and make the purchase worth it.
For new listeners, it invites you to see the breadth of their work. And, like a live show, it builds as it goes on, so listeners are encouraged to listen through to the end. This compelling nature of each track leading to another gives their music a great, fresh feel.
For the low cost of this album, and the immense length of it (over 3.5 hours), including a DVD with an entire show, make this a great deal all around. I can't think of another live album I've enjoyed so much.

Having left Pink Floyd in 1968 after a daily LSD habit had taken its toll, Syd Barrett's first solo album finally appeared two years later with ex-Floyd sidekicks David Gilmour and Richard Wright riding shotgun with him in the studio. The Madcap Laughs is a brilliant but brittle album, with every strum of the electric guitar seeming to take its toll on Barrett's increasingly frayed nerve strings. On songs such as "Love You," his state of mind is well concealed beneath the sort of jolly jangle-pop Blur would later indulge in. On "Dark Globe," however, the strain is palpable: "Please lend a hand ... won't you miss me? Wouldn't you miss me at all?" he pleads, ominously. The best tracks are "Octopus," which possesses all the controlled mania of early Floyd, and "Golden Hair," a still moment of musical rapture whose lyric is taken from a James Joyce poem. --David StubbsCustomer Reviews:
10 Stars - a one of a kind album, glimpsing the unconscious.......2007-07-22
And the music is good, although you may have to listen to it a while to get it. It is soft and subtle compared to his work with Pink Floyd. My personal favorite is "No Man's Land". The song is is electric, with feedback and distortion in both the guitar and the vocal tract, and yet Barrett sings in a soft, controlled, innocent tone. The best line of the album is on this song, "when I live I die".
This album was a major influence on Indie Rock, and I especially detect its influences on David Bowie's "Hunky Dory".

Not what I was expecting anyways.......2007-01-26
But for me anyways most all the songs come off as throw away Beatles songs when they were just too strung out. Most of the songs have a full (or mostly) full band and have some silly lyrics that don't make sense for me coming from the guy that pushed Floyd into the spacey, psychedelics sounds of their first few albums. Save for one song that was what I was hoping for, the rest of the album inset so much hard to listen to as just not pleasing or entertaining.

"Barrett" - Has Syd's Name All Over It.......2006-08-11
I love Syd Barrett and his work, I really do, and I was devastated when he died just recently. He was able to put on a brave face, despite everything that was wrong, and though he struggled through the sessions seemed (from what I've read) always willing to make some more music while he still could. Though he played raggedly and sang off key at time, there was always a humour and warmth to what he played, plus a real honesty, even if you don't always understand what he's singing about. Like the album art (drawn by Syd himself) suggests, there are bugs all over this album. Still, like the album art also suggests, Barrett's name is clearly stamped on the work. Only Syd could sings songs like this. They're unique.
In these sessions, from both what I hear on the album and read in biographies, Syd was really struggling to make "Barrett". He sounds sadder than he does on "The Madcap Laughs", his voice cracking on the song "It Is Obvious", as if he was fighting back tears. He'd seemed to have been fighting his drug induced mental illness on that last album, but it seems to be getting the better of him here. His lyrics are vaguer than his last album too. Though there are a couple of songs about specific things ("Effervescing Elephant" is all about animals of the jungle, and "Love Song" is a... love song) you'd be hard pressed to guess what some of the songs are about. What's a "Gigolo Aunt"? What exactly does Syd mean when he says "our minds shot together" on "It is Obvious". I have my theories, but I don't think I'll ever really know for sure.
There's also a bit more in the way of production compared to "The Madcap Laughs". The extra production and arrangements have a bit of a mixed effect here. While it adds colour, and enhances the classic tracks like "Baby Lemonade" and "Gigolo Aunt", and add mood to the sparser songs like "Love Song", "Dominoes" and "Maisie", the overdubs and instrumental noodling can get in the way at times. "Rats", for instance, is pretty ragged, but the drums and things make it sound worse than it actually is, since everyone is struggling to follow what Syd is doing. I find it a bit hard to listen to "Wolfpack" too thanks to the production, with the layered Syd vocals and everything, a shame since apparenly there were some of Syd's favorite lyrics in that song. (What exactly IS a "magnesium proverb"?) The songs "Waving My Arms in the Air" and "I Never Lied To You" are put together as a medley of sorts, and they barely hold together by themselves. Plus, there's a lot of unneccessary lengthening of songs, like the sound effects at the start and end of the whimsical "Effervescing Elephant", the guitar solo at the start of "Baby Lemonade", repeated verses in a couple of the songs, etc. It's like David Gilmour, being the producer of this album, was really squeezing the material for all it was worth, perhaps a bit too much looking back on it.
If you can, see if you can get your hands on a version of the album with the bonus tracks (the European import version, or the Australian copy-protected "Madcap Laughs"/"Barrett" double pack). You get to hear what some of the songs were like in their purely acoustic form. There's the album's take of "Baby Lemonade" with just Syd and guitar, an intimate acoustic take of "Waving my Arms in the Air" (which I prefer to the original, cause he sings a little higher), a take of "I Never Lied To You" with a rather different vocal melody. You can hear where it could have gone if Syd had been well enough, could have been phenomenal. There's a peaceful take of "Love Song", a "Dominoes" blooper (David Gilmour: "What's it called?" Syd: "Don't know, no title. Suppose it's called Dominoes") plus an alternate version of that song. There's also a jangly rendition of "It is Obvious" at the end, which is one of my favorite songs. Does anyone know whose strange voice saying "It is obvious!" at the start of this version is?
It's worth getting for Syd fans, definitely, "Baby Lemonade", "Gigolo Aunt" and "Effervescing Elephant" are some of his best songs, I think. However, I'd pick up "The Madcap Laughs" and Pink Floyd's "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" first before you head to this one.
Rest in peace, Roger "Syd" Barrett. We'll miss you. Shine on! We'll keep those words you played with company from now on.
SYDS SWANSONG.......2006-07-24
Let me just jump on and join all of the Syd Barrett fans in saying R.I.P and of course Shine On....
He passed away about a week ago. It was the first time the man had made the news in 36 years and all us fans were waving the flag like "ALLRIGHT SYD!!!!" What a strange and crazy cat.
For those of you who may not know, Syd Barrett founded the band known as Pink Floyd in the mid sixties. He had a short run with them, but soon lost a battle with LSD and went slightly off his rocker. He would evntually dissapear into oblivion for the next 36 years of his life, but first he put out two wonderfully strange solo albums. This one the second and final work for good old Syd, is widely coinsidered by fans to be the more solid effort of the two. This is greatly due to the backing band here. These are some solid sixties garage tunes, with crazy syds lyrics. WOW... what a weirdo! My favorite track is Gigolo Aunt, but every song is equally as odd, so strap on that straight jacket and crank this baby up! WE'LL MISS YA SYD!
Also check out MADCAP LAUGHS (better in my opinion) and the classic psychedelic Floyd album PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN.

Gilbert & Sullivan at their best!.......2005-07-20
Good later G&S.......2002-01-30
This CD contains excellent performances by John Rath as Don Alhambra, Jill Pert as the Duchess of Plaza-Toto and the usual fine comic performance by Richard Suart as the Duke of Plaza-Toro.
The score is particularly fine, with Sullivan showing his mastery of many musical types, as the liner notes indicate, such as the waltz, the gavotte, the saltarello and the tarantello. It is a very vibrant and upbeat score.
The libretto is very clever, and Gilbert's sense of satire is never sharper than here. There are amusing songs as the democratic Gondoliers make Barataria into a model of social equality, and the Duke and Duchess relate the story of their product endorsements -- like the Mikado, all the satires are really about Victorian England, not about the land in which the stories are staged.
The story's plot relies on a typical Gilbert device -- babies "switched at birth" make one of the two Gondoliers -- no one is sure which one -- the rightful King of Barataria, promised to the Duke's daughter, Casilda. This interferes with the Gondoliers' plan to marry their sweethearts, and provides much of the humor as the Gondoliers attempt to adjust to their new social position. There is, of course, the usual Gilbertian plot twist at the end to resolve everything happily.
This is a very fun opera to listen to; with almost none of the wistfulness that haunts the Mikado, Pinafore, or the Yeomen of the Guard.

Lerner and Loewe's classic Brigadoon shines in this 1991 studio recording led by celebrated conductor John McGlinn three years after his stunning reconstruction of Show Boat. Broadway stars Brent Barrett (Chicago) and Rebecca Luker (revivals of The Music Man and The Sound of Music) star in this fairy tale about the Scottish village that appears for one day each century. Favorite songs include "I'll Go Home with Bonnie Jean," the gently lilting "Heather on the Hill," "Come to Me, Bend to Me," the standard "Almost Like Being in Love," the comic "Love of My Life," and the yearning "There But for You Go I," and the 79-minute running time allows for plenty of dance music and underscored dialogue. The booklet includes an essay on the show, an interview with the original director, a detailed synopsis, and lyrics, dialogue, and even stage directions from the original 1947 production. Brigadoon doesn't get much better than this. --David HoriuchiCustomer Reviews:

Brigadoon 1991 Studio Cast.......2005-08-14
In the MGM musical, one hears the prelude and the title song in full, at least in the beginning. In the 1991 revival, they talk all through the title song, beginning and end. It happens to be a sublime piece of music and lyric, beautifully suited to the story, and I would rather hear it in its entirety.
The sound quality of the 1991 revival CD is poor. The dialogue, though not a major part of any musical recording, is muted in comparison to the volume used in the songs. In the original cast recordings of, say, Man of La Mancha, Annie, and 1776, the sound is studio quality and there is no trouble hearing the spoken word.
The website where I located this CD described it as a "concert recording," and presumably they wanted to preserve the sound of a live stage production. I did not realize the sound quality was not going to be equal to any of the original cast Broadway recordings I have ever heard. Purchasers should be aware of this.
Once I got over the difference in the production sound, the numbers were done well. The MGM musical, of course, had to omit quite a bit of song and story, but people may be better off with the original Broadway cast recording to obtain the numbers not found in the MGM version. Gene Kelly didn't have much of a voice, but it seems he sung "The Heather On The Hill" with more sincerity and feeling than did Brent Barrett. Kelly seemed to be less concerned with the number as a vocal performance, which was not his forte in any case, and this rendered his performance less of a musical abstraction. Mr. Barrett, however, sung with more feeling in "Come to Me," a song omitted from the MGM production.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful: Can't get these songs out of my mind, June 20, 2000I picked up this recording on a whim, and now I can't put it down! The songs are simply beautiful. Whether they were arranged to overcome Gene Kelly's vocal limitations, to accomodate the movie's emphasis on dance -- versus singing -- or simply to compliment the gorgeous melodies, the orchestrations are sublime and have a surprisingly contemporary sound, especially considering the recording dates back to 1954. "Heather on the Hill" has never sounded better. I'm not crazy about "Almost Like Being in Love" (I think I overdosed on this one about thirty years ago), but even it's quite tolerable on this recording. Among the most pleasant surprises are songs such as "There But for You Go I" and "From this Day On" that were cut prior to the movie's release: What on earth were the powers-that-be at M-G-M thinking? Guess we'll never know but thank goodness someone had enough sense to save these precious recordings.

Syd Barrett's odds and ends finale.......2006-05-23
The album was consisted of songs not used on Syd's two solo albums from 1970 The Madcap Laughs and Barrett. Many people scoff at this compilation. However, this was the first Syd album I ver got on CD in May of 1994.
The title track is one of the highlights on this album. Other songs that were not issued previous were Dolly Rocker, Birdie Hop, Let's Split, Swan Lee(an excellent song about Indians), Lanky(pt.1) and Milky Way.
Some of the earlier takes of Octopus(here as Clowns and Jugglers), Golden Hair and Dark Globe(here as Wouldn't You Miss Me) are way better than the finished versions by a longshot.
On the European issue of Opel, which was originally part of the Crazy Diamond box set, there are more alternate takes of songs like Gigolo Aunt(with full band of Syd on guitar and vocals, David Gilmour on bass, Rick Wright on organ and Jerry Shirley on drums), It is Obvious(one with Syd singing in a low octave on electric guitar then an acoustic version with Syd in a falsetto voice), Late Night(without the vocal or overdubs) and Effervescing Elephant.
This collection is a great rarities collection and is recommended!

But, not all of the songs are the same basic style that RBF has in Turn the Radio off. One Hit Wonderfull is the song that differs the most. While i still like it, it goes into a more Drinking song feel.
So, if you prefer the more Garage Ska type of RBF, and you are a die-hard fan, you probably wont like this CD as much as their others.
A Step Up From Cheer Up.......2005-12-14
I rarely like to break down a review into parts. I like to view a item as a whole. However, in the case of this CD, I feel that it would be good for multiple parties (especially those who haven't shown much liking for this CD).
The Tracks and My Thoughts:
1) The Fire - Good off-beat strumming drives this song through its energy. This is coupled well with the standard, distorted chords in the music.
2) Drinkin' - This is the high-energy wonder of the CD. Once again, it retains the classic reggae-derived off-beat strumming to drive the energy while coupling this with distorted power chords. Its horn riffs aren't overly creative but also are not boring.
3) Don't Start A Band - Like the first two tracks, good mixture of off-beat strumming for energy and filling in with power chords.
4) A-W-E-S-O-M-E - This song to a bit to grow on me. However, if one gives it a chance, it can be seen to be a great song. The introduction is a bit heavy on distortion. However, the ska feel picks up. Perhaps the vocal distortion is a little much. However, that must not a recording problem but the desire of the band, considering the general quality of the CD as a whole.
5) We Hate it When Our Friends Become Successful - A bit heavy on the power-chords. However, there are segments of this song that I find to be truly great in their sound.
6) Turn the Radio Off - A high-energy song, not heavily ska-feeling. However, a really good song.
7) Talkin' Bout A Revolution - Excellent ska feel. Awesome cover.
8) The Bad Guy - Like so many songs on this CD, a mixture of distorted power chords and reggae-style strumming. Decent, though not the greatest, song.
9)Story of My Life - A good cover. Different sounding but very well done.
10)The Joke's On Me - Not ska-feeling. Holds itself, though, because of how well done it is.
11)One Hit Wonderful - Not ska-feeling but very, very powerfully done. Absolutely awesome song.
12)Last Show - Another song with (not as much) power behind it. Very well done rock-feeling song. Excellent vocals by Scott.
13)Say Good Bye - Powerful song with a lot of horns behind it. Excellent vocals by Scott.
14)Your Guts (I Hate 'em) - A bitter yet very ska-feeling song. The up-strums are all there. The sound quality isn't as high but once again must be desired.
Honestly, I have no major problem with this CD. I think that RBF did an awesome job, actually regaining some of their heritage that may have been lost in Cheer Up (which I still think was a great CD). The evolution of this band has, in my humble opinion, went back to its roots to a degree. However, they have taken the lessons learned along the way and applied them to an awesome CD which fuses high-energy and power in an exquisite way.

Pop culture's fascination with the psychically damaged has inspired a pantheon of cult heroes, from Brian Wilson through Sky Saxon, Roky Erickson, and Kurt Cobain, whose enduring--if troubling--appeal could give a cultural psychologist a life's worth of study. Pink Floyd founder Syd Barrett has long been one of the most obsessed over. Listening to this first-ever distillation of the "best" of Barrett's brief post-Floyd recording career (which essentially ended in 1970), it's not hard to understand why. Barrett's childlike side (displayed here on such Lewis Carroll-esque fare as "Octopus," "Terrapin," and "Effervescing Rhino") and almost painfully innocent love songs sometimes feel like the lost blueprint of alt rock, while his space-case vocal delivery and distinctly surreal sense of timing and rhythm give each cut a hypnotic sense of intrigue. It's all a far cry from the intricately baroque pop psychedelia of his brief tenure in Pink Floyd. Something (LSD? Insanity? Both?) clearly shattered Barrett's consciousness between the band's debut album Piper at the Gates of Dawn (he left the band shortly afterward) and the spare, shattered acoustic ballad poems from his first solo album (The Madcap Laughs) featured here. The more accessible, pop-conscious ethos of its follow-up, Barrett (highlighted by "Baby Lemonade" and the amusing "Gigolo Aunt") were largely studio illusions conjured up by sidemen such as Floyd's David Gilmour and Richard Wright. Barrett fans should also note the presence here of the previously unreleased "Bob Dylan Blues," a wry, talking blues parody of the great Zimmerman and allegedly one of Barrett's earliest compositions. --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description

A bad reason to buy "Crazy Diamond": You are compelled to hear every goddam chord and cough Syd Barrett ever recorded.
Syd was a visionary who evoked chills even alone with his guitar ("Feel" and "Opel" particularly), but by and large, the quality of his two official solo albums is the result of producer Dave Gilmour's heroic struggle to organize Syd's chaotic performances into something sane musicians could accompany. The bonus tracks included here are not "alternates" -- they are justifiably rejects: solo performances which were not as good as the ragged takes which were eventually used.
If you found "Opel" -- the 80s compilation of stuff which was never good enough for release when Syd was still viable -- a disappointment, there is no reason to go further. This box set only serves to emphasize the (avoidable!) tragedy that was Syd Barrett.
But if you're like me, reading this review won't stop you.
