A founding member of Pink Floyd who suffered a mental breakdown in the late '60s, Syd Barrett is revered in some circles for his singular vision. While outtake recordings that have surfaced have sadly shown much of his psychic dislocation, his two solo albums he released have much idiosyncratic beauty to offer. Barrett is the second solo album, joining The Madcap Laughs as a solid representation of Barrett's innate tunefulness and bizarre, surrealist imagery. Produced by the Floyd's David Gilmour and Rick Wright and featuring Humble Pie's Jerry Shirley on drums, the album veers from lighthearted shuffling jug band tunes to the grand and majestic "Baby Lemonade," possibly Barrett's finest song. Several other Barrett staples such as "Dominoes," "Rats," "Gigolo Aunt," and "Effervescing Elephant" showcase Barrett's knack for unexpected chord changes and inventive rhythmic breaks. Ironically, Barrett's music is not some heavy "acid rock" trip but a free-spirited, openly optimistic, and folkie journey through one man's unusual mind. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars Capture the essence of a live show!.......2007-06-03

No matter how long you've been listening to RBF, this album is sure to please. With awesome recordings and live antics, it appeals to any kind of listener

For older fans, it showcases their best work, with fresh recordings and pleasurable stylized versions of songs. These unique performances give a variety to those who already own the original CDs, and make the purchase worth it.

For new listeners, it invites you to see the breadth of their work. And, like a live show, it builds as it goes on, so listeners are encouraged to listen through to the end. This compelling nature of each track leading to another gives their music a great, fresh feel.

For the low cost of this album, and the immense length of it (over 3.5 hours), including a DVD with an entire show, make this a great deal all around. I can't think of another live album I've enjoyed so much.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!.......2007-05-08

Best RBF album yet. Hilarious and great music. A must for any RBF fan or any human actually.

5 out of 5 stars Their best live album!.......2007-04-10

Fans of Reel big fish and fans of ska and the like, rejoice. Finally Reel big fish released a live album. Giving people the chance to experience the magic of RBF live. Although it still doesn't beat going to their show, it gives you a nice look of what they have to offer. Especially (The many versions of) S.R. gives me the feeling of standing in front of a stage where they go and have fun with music.

A must have for fans of Reel big fish and a recommendation for everyone who loves ska or just music in particular.

5 out of 5 stars If you like hepped-up ska. . . ........2007-04-10

. . .this album is for you. Few live albums catch the true feel of a band in the concert hall, but this one does. I've seen RBF live, and this CD (with bonus DVD) does one of the best jobs of replicating the experience. Okay, I'll admit, Aaron and Scott's "witty" banter gets a little annoying at times (damn, need the Tivo for music), but the energy of the songs makes it worth putting up with. This band like few others know how to engage an audience in a show, and the CD captures that experience as best as is possible. No ska band playing today can match their horns (sorry, Bosstones fans). Don't miss the chance to catch RBF live, but if you can't do that (and even if you do), this is the next best thing to being there and having the F-bombs dropped on you in person.

5 out of 5 stars It kicked my @$$.......2007-04-04

This is the best CD i have ever purchased. It sounds awesome for having been recorded live and the diolouge is pretty entertaining and just fun to listen to. 2 CDs and a dvd for 15 bucks its a steal! seriously if you even kinda sorta like ska youll effen love this cd. Its an andvanced cd so it doesnt play on older cd players...like mine. I just ripped it to my comp and then burned it and that seemed an easy way around that. realy this is an amazing album.

Having left Pink Floyd in 1968 after a daily LSD habit had taken its toll, Syd Barrett's first solo album finally appeared two years later with ex-Floyd sidekicks David Gilmour and Richard Wright riding shotgun with him in the studio. The Madcap Laughs is a brilliant but brittle album, with every strum of the electric guitar seeming to take its toll on Barrett's increasingly frayed nerve strings. On songs such as "Love You," his state of mind is well concealed beneath the sort of jolly jangle-pop Blur would later indulge in. On "Dark Globe," however, the strain is palpable: "Please lend a hand ... won't you miss me? Wouldn't you miss me at all?" he pleads, ominously. The best tracks are "Octopus," which possesses all the controlled mania of early Floyd, and "Golden Hair," a still moment of musical rapture whose lyric is taken from a James Joyce poem. --David Stubbs

mind of the artist untrammeled by commercialism or the desire for the bubble reputation. Syd Barrett is the Vincent Van Gogh of psychedilic rock. His gentle nature comes out in this album, which is primarily accoustic. His songs are like poems, ranging from the reflective (Terrapin) to the Rock oriented (No Man's Land) to the comic (Late Night).

And the music is good, although you may have to listen to it a while to get it. It is soft and subtle compared to his work with Pink Floyd. My personal favorite is "No Man's Land". The song is is electric, with feedback and distortion in both the guitar and the vocal tract, and yet Barrett sings in a soft, controlled, innocent tone. The best line of the album is on this song, "when I live I die".

This album was a major influence on Indie Rock, and I especially detect its influences on David Bowie's "Hunky Dory".

3 out of 5 stars Not Floyd.......2007-05-29

Bought this because I am an enormous pink floyd fan and read reviews that, in this case, Madcap is a must have. I was disappointed in the CD overall mostly due to its more pop-oriented tracks that lack the variety of percussion and synthisizer that make the early floyd albums great. Octopus is a catchy tune, but most of the others fail to engage. As a whole: an interesting album, but lacks the creativity of any of the Floyd productions.

4 out of 5 stars The Madness---And Genius---Of Syd.......2007-04-15

After leaving (or being dismissed from) Pink Floyd in 1968 due to his LSD use & erratic behaviour, singer/songwriter/guitarist Syd Barrett re-emerged in 1970 with his debut solo album, "The Madcap Laughs." The album did not come easy, as Syd never fully recovered from his drug use, and it clearly shows in his ragged performances on "Madcap Laughs." Producer Malcolm Jones did what he could with Syd for about half of the album, before handing the production reigns over to Barrett's former Floyd mates Roger Waters & David Gilmour to finish the job. Throughout the album, bum notes are played, beats are missed, and Barrett sings off-key. And on the rocker songs, the session players (from the group The Soft Machine) sound like they are struggling to keep up with Syd, who could hit a rough patch at any moment. For any other artist, this would all be nothing short of disastrous. And YET....in the case of Syd Barrett, any and all mistakes are immediately forgiven. Why? Because Barrett's songs on "The Madcap Laughs" are all wonderfully written, and although Syd's voice and guitar-playing are obviously not in tip-top condition, you can plainly hear on this album that he's trying. He's really, really *trying* to do his best, and his efforts really do shine through. For every bum note there's a passage that Syd plays beautifully, for every missed beat there are many beats that are hit right on schedule, and for every note that Syd sings off-key, there are many moments where his very distinctive, British voice is magical. And of course, there's Syd's lyrics. You may not know what all of them actually *mean*, really, but to my ears, they're still poetry. The rockers are still powerful ("No Good Trying," "No Man's Land," the rockabilly fun of "Here I Go," and the classic "Octopus"), and the softer numbers still have great beauty to them ("Terrapin," the passionate "Dark Globe," the effective "Golden Hair"---based on a James Joyce poem---and "Long Gone"). Even the more ragged numbers like "Feel" and "If It's In You," somehow still hang together quite well (amusingly, we even hear some brief banter from Syd in the middle of "If It's In You," as his voice goes wildly off the map, he stops playing, prepares for another take, and finally gets through the song). When all is said and done, "The Madcap Laughs," warts and all, is an excellent album. It is a flawed masterpiece, and it shows that Syd Barrett, even with his mind irreversibly fractured by this point, was still a genius musician.

5 out of 5 stars Don't analyze...just listen.......2007-03-08

The Madcap Laughs defies categorization. Once you hear it, you may never want to listen to anything else...except perhaps for as much Syd as your psyche can absorb. Syd Barrett's music is life altering...a prism of genius. Do yourself a favor. Listen while the madcap laughs.

Syd...you are missed.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I was expecting anyways.......2007-01-26

So this was apparently done in Syd's break down, which yes it sounds like it but not in the way I would have guessed. Reading about this album online I guess I expected really bare bones, dark, songs with just acoustic guitar and vocals.
But for me anyways most all the songs come off as throw away Beatles songs when they were just too strung out. Most of the songs have a full (or mostly) full band and have some silly lyrics that don't make sense for me coming from the guy that pushed Floyd into the spacey, psychedelics sounds of their first few albums. Save for one song that was what I was hoping for, the rest of the album inset so much hard to listen to as just not pleasing or entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars Syd Barrett - 'Barrett' (Capitol).......2007-02-20

Originally released in 1970, as this was the late Pink Floyd's founder, original guitarist and vocalist's second solo work. Much better the second time around. Could swear I heard these songs when I was a teen and didn't care much for them. Now, many light years later, I'm more able to fully appreciated this long-lost piece of British psychedelia the way it was meant to be taken in. So much better than what I expected. Most notable cuts are "Baby Lemonade", the uplifting "Rats", the foot-stomping "Gigolo Aunt", "Waiving My Arms In The Air" and the tripping "Wined And Dined". Personnel: Syd Barrett-guitar&vocals, Dave Gilmour-organ,guitar&producer, Rick Wright-keyboards&organ, Brian Hogg-tuba and Jerry Shirley (Humble Pie)-drums. A definite should-have.

5 out of 5 stars Esencia Pink floydiana.......2007-01-13

4 out of 5 stars A must for serious floyd fans.......2007-01-10

This album from the late Syd Barrett is a sad reminder of the wasted talent of the orginal floyd front man. However, it is a bit obsure and moody and may turn off fans who don't appreciate the pre dark side floyd albums. For those who do, it is a good adjunct to those early albums and a must for ardent floyd fans.

3 out of 5 stars "Barrett" - Has Syd's Name All Over It.......2006-08-11

"Barrett" was Syd Barrett's second solo studio album, and the results of his last truly fruitful studio sessions of 1970, and features some playing from Pink Floyd bandmates David Gilmour and Richard Wright. Though there are some classic Syd songs on this album, I don't think this album is as good as "The Madcap Laughs" or even Pink Floyd's "Piper at the Gates of Dawn".

I love Syd Barrett and his work, I really do, and I was devastated when he died just recently. He was able to put on a brave face, despite everything that was wrong, and though he struggled through the sessions seemed (from what I've read) always willing to make some more music while he still could. Though he played raggedly and sang off key at time, there was always a humour and warmth to what he played, plus a real honesty, even if you don't always understand what he's singing about. Like the album art (drawn by Syd himself) suggests, there are bugs all over this album. Still, like the album art also suggests, Barrett's name is clearly stamped on the work. Only Syd could sings songs like this. They're unique.

In these sessions, from both what I hear on the album and read in biographies, Syd was really struggling to make "Barrett". He sounds sadder than he does on "The Madcap Laughs", his voice cracking on the song "It Is Obvious", as if he was fighting back tears. He'd seemed to have been fighting his drug induced mental illness on that last album, but it seems to be getting the better of him here. His lyrics are vaguer than his last album too. Though there are a couple of songs about specific things ("Effervescing Elephant" is all about animals of the jungle, and "Love Song" is a... love song) you'd be hard pressed to guess what some of the songs are about. What's a "Gigolo Aunt"? What exactly does Syd mean when he says "our minds shot together" on "It is Obvious". I have my theories, but I don't think I'll ever really know for sure.

There's also a bit more in the way of production compared to "The Madcap Laughs". The extra production and arrangements have a bit of a mixed effect here. While it adds colour, and enhances the classic tracks like "Baby Lemonade" and "Gigolo Aunt", and add mood to the sparser songs like "Love Song", "Dominoes" and "Maisie", the overdubs and instrumental noodling can get in the way at times. "Rats", for instance, is pretty ragged, but the drums and things make it sound worse than it actually is, since everyone is struggling to follow what Syd is doing. I find it a bit hard to listen to "Wolfpack" too thanks to the production, with the layered Syd vocals and everything, a shame since apparenly there were some of Syd's favorite lyrics in that song. (What exactly IS a "magnesium proverb"?) The songs "Waving My Arms in the Air" and "I Never Lied To You" are put together as a medley of sorts, and they barely hold together by themselves. Plus, there's a lot of unneccessary lengthening of songs, like the sound effects at the start and end of the whimsical "Effervescing Elephant", the guitar solo at the start of "Baby Lemonade", repeated verses in a couple of the songs, etc. It's like David Gilmour, being the producer of this album, was really squeezing the material for all it was worth, perhaps a bit too much looking back on it.

If you can, see if you can get your hands on a version of the album with the bonus tracks (the European import version, or the Australian copy-protected "Madcap Laughs"/"Barrett" double pack). You get to hear what some of the songs were like in their purely acoustic form. There's the album's take of "Baby Lemonade" with just Syd and guitar, an intimate acoustic take of "Waving my Arms in the Air" (which I prefer to the original, cause he sings a little higher), a take of "I Never Lied To You" with a rather different vocal melody. You can hear where it could have gone if Syd had been well enough, could have been phenomenal. There's a peaceful take of "Love Song", a "Dominoes" blooper (David Gilmour: "What's it called?" Syd: "Don't know, no title. Suppose it's called Dominoes") plus an alternate version of that song. There's also a jangly rendition of "It is Obvious" at the end, which is one of my favorite songs. Does anyone know whose strange voice saying "It is obvious!" at the start of this version is?

It's worth getting for Syd fans, definitely, "Baby Lemonade", "Gigolo Aunt" and "Effervescing Elephant" are some of his best songs, I think. However, I'd pick up "The Madcap Laughs" and Pink Floyd's "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" first before you head to this one.

Rest in peace, Roger "Syd" Barrett. We'll miss you. Shine on! We'll keep those words you played with company from now on.

4 out of 5 stars SYDS SWANSONG.......2006-07-24

Let me just jump on and join all of the Syd Barrett fans in saying R.I.P and of course Shine On....
He passed away about a week ago. It was the first time the man had made the news in 36 years and all us fans were waving the flag like "ALLRIGHT SYD!!!!" What a strange and crazy cat.
For those of you who may not know, Syd Barrett founded the band known as Pink Floyd in the mid sixties. He had a short run with them, but soon lost a battle with LSD and went slightly off his rocker. He would evntually dissapear into oblivion for the next 36 years of his life, but first he put out two wonderfully strange solo albums. This one the second and final work for good old Syd, is widely coinsidered by fans to be the more solid effort of the two. This is greatly due to the backing band here. These are some solid sixties garage tunes, with crazy syds lyrics. WOW... what a weirdo! My favorite track is Gigolo Aunt, but every song is equally as odd, so strap on that straight jacket and crank this baby up! WE'LL MISS YA SYD!
Also check out MADCAP LAUGHS (better in my opinion) and the classic psychedelic Floyd album PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN.

5 out of 5 stars Gilbert & Sullivan at their best!.......2005-07-20

This is the best recording of Gilbert & Sullivan's "The Gondoliers" ever recorded! The diction is excellent and the singers are amazing. It has really helped me get ready for the production of "The Gondoliers" I'm in with The Utah Light Opera Company.

4 out of 5 stars Good later G&S.......2002-01-30

The Gondoliers was the last Gilbert and Sullivan opera to be a great popular success; listening to this version of the opera as performed by the D'Oyly Carte shows why: it is a highly entertaining score, with warm characters and a lot of humor.

This CD contains excellent performances by John Rath as Don Alhambra, Jill Pert as the Duchess of Plaza-Toto and the usual fine comic performance by Richard Suart as the Duke of Plaza-Toro.

The score is particularly fine, with Sullivan showing his mastery of many musical types, as the liner notes indicate, such as the waltz, the gavotte, the saltarello and the tarantello. It is a very vibrant and upbeat score.

The libretto is very clever, and Gilbert's sense of satire is never sharper than here. There are amusing songs as the democratic Gondoliers make Barataria into a model of social equality, and the Duke and Duchess relate the story of their product endorsements -- like the Mikado, all the satires are really about Victorian England, not about the land in which the stories are staged.

The story's plot relies on a typical Gilbert device -- babies "switched at birth" make one of the two Gondoliers -- no one is sure which one -- the rightful King of Barataria, promised to the Duke's daughter, Casilda. This interferes with the Gondoliers' plan to marry their sweethearts, and provides much of the humor as the Gondoliers attempt to adjust to their new social position. There is, of course, the usual Gilbertian plot twist at the end to resolve everything happily.

This is a very fun opera to listen to; with almost none of the wistfulness that haunts the Mikado, Pinafore, or the Yeomen of the Guard.

5 out of 5 stars Definitive.......2000-07-01

Sullivan's score to The Gondoliers has been the object of a good deal of tampering over the years, and as is the case with all of the D'Oyly Carte's more recent efforts, an attempt has been made to return to the autograph. What we hear in this set is Sullivan's original introduction, minus the cachuca which was tacked on in the 1930s. The original is vastly more effective. There are other points of interest, such as the almost supernaturally crisp chorus - sample them in the "Thank you gallant gondolieri" in the first act. The cast is, as usual with D'Oyly Carte, first rate, with John Rath and Jill Pert standouts. Rarely have I heard Don Alhambra's arias sung with such panache. Rath even gives Donals Adams and Darrell Fancourt a run for their money.

Well worth the investment, even if you have the excellent 1960 recording.

5 out of 5 stars the best choice so far.......1999-07-18

There are two strong rivals for this set. The early electric set transferred from 78 rpms onto Pearl CDs is suberb--the closest we will ever get to what Gilbert wanted in articulation and characterization and to what Sullivan wanted in vocal style--but is of course subjected to the sonics state of the art circa 1930. But to understand what this opera is all about, this is the choice of choices! The complete version on Decca has all the dialogue...which might or might not be a Good Thing on repeated hearings. And, no, you cannot program it out since Decca decided to contain it on the same tracks as the music that precedes it. So if all you want is the musical parts and stereo is a must, this Sony/Columbia set is wonderfully paced, well characterized (though not as well as the early electric set) and well conducted. And in case you do not know, this work is even more tuneful than "The Mikado"--which is saying a lot. And by the way, try the "Iolanthe" in this same series, but not "The Mikado" (which is far too rushed).

Lerner and Loewe's classic Brigadoon shines in this 1991 studio recording led by celebrated conductor John McGlinn three years after his stunning reconstruction of Show Boat. Broadway stars Brent Barrett (Chicago) and Rebecca Luker (revivals of The Music Man and The Sound of Music) star in this fairy tale about the Scottish village that appears for one day each century. Favorite songs include "I'll Go Home with Bonnie Jean," the gently lilting "Heather on the Hill," "Come to Me, Bend to Me," the standard "Almost Like Being in Love," the comic "Love of My Life," and the yearning "There But for You Go I," and the 79-minute running time allows for plenty of dance music and underscored dialogue. The booklet includes an essay on the show, an interview with the original director, a detailed synopsis, and lyrics, dialogue, and even stage directions from the original 1947 production. Brigadoon doesn't get much better than this. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Brigadoon, the London cast.......2007-02-21

This album is beautiful. The arrangements and the singing are beyond compare. As a director, it gives some fresh ideas for musicality and arrangement. I appreciate another venue from which to enjoy this wonderful musical!

5 out of 5 stars Brigadoon - the audio recording.......2007-02-14

Far better to listen to the music than see the movie! The voices were beautiful, especially on "There But For You Go I."

5 out of 5 stars Pure Magic!.......2006-08-02

How wonderful to have a complete, beautifully performed recording of this great (and somewhat forgotten) show. When it opened it was slightly overshadowed by Rodgers and Hammerstein (who around this period had South Pacific and The King and I running simultaneously), but what a gem of a musical. Don't go by the truncated film, except for the breathtaking dancing of Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse, it's whittled down to 5 songs from the broadway score and hugely disappointing. You can even tell all the sets are painted backdrops.
But this recording is a charmer and couldn't be cast better. Rebecca Luker and Brent Barret are perfect as Tommy and Fiona. And Judy Kaye runs away with the recording with her comic turns.

Turn up the volume, sit back and get lost in Brigadoon!!

2 out of 5 stars Brigadoon 1991 Studio Cast.......2005-08-14

I am no theatre critic, and I have never seen Brigadoon on the stage, nor have I heard the original Broadway cast recording. The MGM musical was my only reference point, until I bought the London revival CD.

In the MGM musical, one hears the prelude and the title song in full, at least in the beginning. In the 1991 revival, they talk all through the title song, beginning and end. It happens to be a sublime piece of music and lyric, beautifully suited to the story, and I would rather hear it in its entirety.

The sound quality of the 1991 revival CD is poor. The dialogue, though not a major part of any musical recording, is muted in comparison to the volume used in the songs. In the original cast recordings of, say, Man of La Mancha, Annie, and 1776, the sound is studio quality and there is no trouble hearing the spoken word.

The website where I located this CD described it as a "concert recording," and presumably they wanted to preserve the sound of a live stage production. I did not realize the sound quality was not going to be equal to any of the original cast Broadway recordings I have ever heard. Purchasers should be aware of this.

Once I got over the difference in the production sound, the numbers were done well. The MGM musical, of course, had to omit quite a bit of song and story, but people may be better off with the original Broadway cast recording to obtain the numbers not found in the MGM version. Gene Kelly didn't have much of a voice, but it seems he sung "The Heather On The Hill" with more sincerity and feeling than did Brent Barrett. Kelly seemed to be less concerned with the number as a vocal performance, which was not his forte in any case, and this rendered his performance less of a musical abstraction. Mr. Barrett, however, sung with more feeling in "Come to Me," a song omitted from the MGM production.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Recording of a Beautiful Musical Score.......2004-09-27

A wonderful, relatively new cast recording of this classic American musical. The songs are, of course, simply lovely. Some of the orchestrations sound a little hokey (for some reason, "Heather on the Hill" sounds more like a square dance than the gorgeous tune I remember Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse dancing to in the film version of "Brigadoon"), but the songs certainly stand the test of time, and manage to reflect the show's "adult fairy-tale" charm. Isn't it about time someone brought this warhorse back to Broadway? Guess we'll have to be patient. In the meantime, this album is a more-than-sufficient substitute. (For the sake of comparison, pick up a copy of the MGM movie soundtrack of "Brigadoon" starring Gene Kelly. While Mr. Kelly's vocal limitations are pretty obvious, the orchestrations are beautiful and, in my personal opinion, far outshine the understandably "stagey" orchestrations on this and other live cast recordings.)

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful: Can't get these songs out of my mind, June 20, 2000I picked up this recording on a whim, and now I can't put it down! The songs are simply beautiful. Whether they were arranged to overcome Gene Kelly's vocal limitations, to accomodate the movie's emphasis on dance -- versus singing -- or simply to compliment the gorgeous melodies, the orchestrations are sublime and have a surprisingly contemporary sound, especially considering the recording dates back to 1954. "Heather on the Hill" has never sounded better. I'm not crazy about "Almost Like Being in Love" (I think I overdosed on this one about thirty years ago), but even it's quite tolerable on this recording. Among the most pleasant surprises are songs such as "There But for You Go I" and "From this Day On" that were cut prior to the movie's release: What on earth were the powers-that-be at M-G-M thinking? Guess we'll never know but thank goodness someone had enough sense to save these precious recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Syd Barrett Fans.......2006-11-04

This is the album that exposes the side of Syd barrett we all were so curiuos to experience for so long. Although to the average listener, it may not be fit for mainstream. The ideas and innovations can be heard in this album, sometimes sad reminding us what could have been. Although they are mainly outtakes, and one most remember that or he sounds even more out of it than he really is, which is saying a lot. It's great for the true Syd Barrett fans that wanted more after the last two albums finished up by Gilmore and friends. I know Syd barrett was a genious clouded by insanity. This album is very raw, and allows you to hear that, but also sad knowing that he is in there but unable to perfect his gift enough to make it totally comprehensible. Fives stars for the Syd barrett fans, but if your looking for Pink Floyd, it's not here, sorry to say.

5 out of 5 stars Syd Barrett, RIP.......2006-07-12

Syd Barrett will be greatly missed. His whimsical songwriting style was unique and greatly influenced many famous musicians like David Bowie. This cd is an essential purchase for those wishing a taste of genius.

5 out of 5 stars Syd Barrett's odds and ends finale.......2006-05-23

Syd Barrett's rarities album Opel was released in October of 1988(although it was not until September of 1993 when I first heard this album).
The album was consisted of songs not used on Syd's two solo albums from 1970 The Madcap Laughs and Barrett. Many people scoff at this compilation. However, this was the first Syd album I ver got on CD in May of 1994.
The title track is one of the highlights on this album. Other songs that were not issued previous were Dolly Rocker, Birdie Hop, Let's Split, Swan Lee(an excellent song about Indians), Lanky(pt.1) and Milky Way.
Some of the earlier takes of Octopus(here as Clowns and Jugglers), Golden Hair and Dark Globe(here as Wouldn't You Miss Me) are way better than the finished versions by a longshot.
On the European issue of Opel, which was originally part of the Crazy Diamond box set, there are more alternate takes of songs like Gigolo Aunt(with full band of Syd on guitar and vocals, David Gilmour on bass, Rick Wright on organ and Jerry Shirley on drums), It is Obvious(one with Syd singing in a low octave on electric guitar then an acoustic version with Syd in a falsetto voice), Late Night(without the vocal or overdubs) and Effervescing Elephant.
This collection is a great rarities collection and is recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Interesting odd and ends collection of Syd Barrett's work........2005-06-21

Opel is a collection of unreleased recordings from Syd Barrett, they're either demos, alternate versions or unfinished tracks. Syd was one strange dude and very unperdictable. He would wander into the studio and start playing and would quit without warning. While he was in the studio, the backing members of Soft Machine would hang around and try to play along. But Syd would change chords or notes so often that it became virtually impossible to keep up with him. A collection of Syd Barrett's material was released a few years ago and it uses tracks from all three albums, a definitive collection of music world's most eccentric individual.

Recommended for psychedelic music fans.

5 out of 5 stars The Ousted Madcap Laughs.......2004-07-08

This is all the GOOD Stuff from Madcap Laughs. These are basically outtakes and other versions of songs off Madcap Laughs. This really shows Syd in his real light. Not the polished finished albums but the raw stuff off old albums. It is not as clean and shows Syds true musical Tallent. which may be hard for some to listen to, but if that is you you probabbly don't like Syd anyway. True fans must have.

5 out of 5 stars I'm happy........2006-04-17

I am a long time RBF fan. I've listened to every release they have, Turn the Radio Off still being my favorite throughout the years. We're Not Happy, I must say may be better than Radio. It's atleast on par. The album starts out great wtih The Fire, and doesn't let up at all. Reel Big Fish has always prided themselves in being a great cover band. I still think the lounge version of "Hungry Like the Wolf" I have by them is 10 times better than the original. This album includes Revolution by Tracy Chapman, Story of My Life by Social Distortion, and We Hate It by Morrisey, and they're great. That's not to say they're necessarily BETTER than the originals, but they're definitely RBF's own take on them, and I like it. The fist two are both songs I've listened to a lot growing up. In addition, it seems the band has really improved in their songwriting, with some creative bridges. I've had this album since it came out, so it's been a while since I've played this album a lot, but when it first came out, I dont' 'think I listened to anything else for about 2 weeks. I'm listening to it now as I write this, and It's still awesome. RBF should be proud of this release. It's definitely a great improvement over Cheer Up. I give this album 5 stars. I don't think it's a perfect album in the grand scheme of all albums in the world, but rather it's pretty much perfect for them. It's really much better than I thought it would be.

5 out of 5 stars Rock on forever, Reel Big Fish!.......2006-02-19

I'm a newer RBF fan, but I have to say this CD is my FAVORITE CD right now!! It rocks! When I got this CD, it was the only thing I listened to for about three weeks. I know some people think it isn't as good as other albums, but I have to say this: Just because this CD isn't good as others doesn't make it a bad CD. "The Fire" is a great opening song but sometimes the lyrics are hard to understand. "Drinkin'" was an excellent song as well; very power chord heavy. "Don't Start A Band" was definitly a standout track with great lyrics and sound. "A-W-E-S-O-M-E" was pretty good but the vocal distortion seemed kinda pointless. "We Hate It When Our Friends Become Sucessful" was a short but fun cover. "Turn The Radio Off" was one of my favorites. This track was pretty much perfect! "Talkin' Bout A Revolution" was also a good cover but not the best song ever. "The Bad Guy" is one of my favorite songs as well with good lyrics. "Story of my Life" is another one of my favs with a very cool sound to it. I don't care too much for "The Joke's On Me." "One Hit Wonderful" and "Last Show" were a pretty good tunes but not as good as some of the other songs on this album. I don't like "Say Goodbye" too much either. "Your Guts (I Hate 'Em)" made me laugh the first time I heard it. Though I don't get what's up with all those weird sound effects and noises at the end. This is a great album. BUY IT NOW.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2006-01-14

I am a newer RBF Fan, but, i must say that i think that this is their best CD yet. I know many people who disagree with me, but, i prefer the more matured RBF that is in this CD, rather than the RBF in Turn the Radio Off. All of the songs are very catchy, and give them a chance too. I did not like AWESOME at all, at first, but, it grew on me, and now it is one of my favorites out of the CD.

But, not all of the songs are the same basic style that RBF has in Turn the Radio off. One Hit Wonderfull is the song that differs the most. While i still like it, it goes into a more Drinking song feel.

So, if you prefer the more Garage Ska type of RBF, and you are a die-hard fan, you probably wont like this CD as much as their others.

5 out of 5 stars A Step Up From Cheer Up.......2005-12-14

With great anticipation, I bought Reel Big Fish's new album on its release day. I must say that I was not disappointed. There is a marked difference between RBF as they are today and RBF as they were in the age of Turn the Radio Off. However, there is not pure discontinuity, and if you read through all of this review, I will hopefully get to show you that the beloved band of third-wave ska has not "sold out" or gone down hill.

I rarely like to break down a review into parts. I like to view a item as a whole. However, in the case of this CD, I feel that it would be good for multiple parties (especially those who haven't shown much liking for this CD).

The Tracks and My Thoughts:
1) The Fire - Good off-beat strumming drives this song through its energy. This is coupled well with the standard, distorted chords in the music.

2) Drinkin' - This is the high-energy wonder of the CD. Once again, it retains the classic reggae-derived off-beat strumming to drive the energy while coupling this with distorted power chords. Its horn riffs aren't overly creative but also are not boring.

3) Don't Start A Band - Like the first two tracks, good mixture of off-beat strumming for energy and filling in with power chords.

4) A-W-E-S-O-M-E - This song to a bit to grow on me. However, if one gives it a chance, it can be seen to be a great song. The introduction is a bit heavy on distortion. However, the ska feel picks up. Perhaps the vocal distortion is a little much. However, that must not a recording problem but the desire of the band, considering the general quality of the CD as a whole.

5) We Hate it When Our Friends Become Successful - A bit heavy on the power-chords. However, there are segments of this song that I find to be truly great in their sound.

6) Turn the Radio Off - A high-energy song, not heavily ska-feeling. However, a really good song.

7) Talkin' Bout A Revolution - Excellent ska feel. Awesome cover.

8) The Bad Guy - Like so many songs on this CD, a mixture of distorted power chords and reggae-style strumming. Decent, though not the greatest, song.

9)Story of My Life - A good cover. Different sounding but very well done.

10)The Joke's On Me - Not ska-feeling. Holds itself, though, because of how well done it is.

11)One Hit Wonderful - Not ska-feeling but very, very powerfully done. Absolutely awesome song.

12)Last Show - Another song with (not as much) power behind it. Very well done rock-feeling song. Excellent vocals by Scott.

13)Say Good Bye - Powerful song with a lot of horns behind it. Excellent vocals by Scott.

14)Your Guts (I Hate 'em) - A bitter yet very ska-feeling song. The up-strums are all there. The sound quality isn't as high but once again must be desired.

Honestly, I have no major problem with this CD. I think that RBF did an awesome job, actually regaining some of their heritage that may have been lost in Cheer Up (which I still think was a great CD). The evolution of this band has, in my humble opinion, went back to its roots to a degree. However, they have taken the lessons learned along the way and applied them to an awesome CD which fuses high-energy and power in an exquisite way.

Pop culture's fascination with the psychically damaged has inspired a pantheon of cult heroes, from Brian Wilson through Sky Saxon, Roky Erickson, and Kurt Cobain, whose enduring--if troubling--appeal could give a cultural psychologist a life's worth of study. Pink Floyd founder Syd Barrett has long been one of the most obsessed over. Listening to this first-ever distillation of the "best" of Barrett's brief post-Floyd recording career (which essentially ended in 1970), it's not hard to understand why. Barrett's childlike side (displayed here on such Lewis Carroll-esque fare as "Octopus," "Terrapin," and "Effervescing Rhino") and almost painfully innocent love songs sometimes feel like the lost blueprint of alt rock, while his space-case vocal delivery and distinctly surreal sense of timing and rhythm give each cut a hypnotic sense of intrigue. It's all a far cry from the intricately baroque pop psychedelia of his brief tenure in Pink Floyd. Something (LSD? Insanity? Both?) clearly shattered Barrett's consciousness between the band's debut album Piper at the Gates of Dawn (he left the band shortly afterward) and the spare, shattered acoustic ballad poems from his first solo album (The Madcap Laughs) featured here. The more accessible, pop-conscious ethos of its follow-up, Barrett (highlighted by "Baby Lemonade" and the amusing "Gigolo Aunt") were largely studio illusions conjured up by sidemen such as Floyd's David Gilmour and Richard Wright. Barrett fans should also note the presence here of the previously unreleased "Bob Dylan Blues," a wry, talking blues parody of the great Zimmerman and allegedly one of Barrett's earliest compositions. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

UK collection featuring 22 tracks, the finest solo works from the eccentric original Pink Floyd co-founder. Compiled from his solo albums, the rarities and outtakes collection 'Opel', the box-set 'Crazy Diamond' and two previously unreleased tracks, 'Two Of A Kind' (BBC Session Track) and 'Bob Dylan's Blues'.

5 out of 5 stars The best collection likely.......2007-07-25

After playing all Syd Barrett's solo albums and deciding what should be on a decent "best o' Syd," I found only two tunes different on my list from what appears here; "It Is Obvious," which I would have included, and "Here I Go," which I would not. But upon reviewing both tunes, I can see their reasons, adding hastily that even though "Here I Go" has some historical significance because of its vague Pink Floyd reference, considering how few albums Barrett has out, a collection of this sort should be less about history, and more about what he did well. If you want history, it's only two CDs, an outtake collection, and a live-in-studio EP. Syd Barrett completism is neither hard nor expensive. But that aside, I could hardly hope for a better collection: Considering the usual variations in taste, two tunes difference from theirs to mine is rare. Plus this collection has the previously unreleased "Bob Dylan Blues," wisely left for last--or next to last, anyway--and all tracks have been properly remastered. A good, representative collection of works by one of Rock's greatest oddities, and definitely the one to look to if you're a fan of early Pink Floyd, curious to hear other music by the man who started it all.

5 out of 5 stars A great tribute for Syd Barrett.......2007-01-23

Wouldnt you miss me is a great collection of songs from Syds solo discs. i like all the songs. Syds vocals are understandable and the music is good Rick Wrights solo on love song is beautiful Syd was a good guitarist the producers including Roger Waters and Dave Gilmour did great i like them even more for their helping Syd. The booklet answers most of the questions and gives a good insight. If you like Piper and Jugband blues you should like these songs to.

4 out of 5 stars Flashes of Brilliance.......2007-01-11

I am tempted to say that a burned out Syd Barrett wrote better lyrics than a stone cold sober Roger Waters or a not so sober David Gilmour, but that would be posturing. Besides, Syd Barrett's reputation hasn't suffered any from his absence from the studio these many years. In fact it is due in part to his absence from the recording studio that people have been able to build up his persona to it's now legendary status. Wouldn't You Miss Me doesn't bust that bubble or blow it up even more; it just confirms what his fans have been saying all these years: that Syd Barrett had a unique lyrical talent that even mental illness could not completely tarnish. There is a distinct Floyd (circa 1969) sound to these tracks: lots of jangly 12 strings, close-mic'd vocals and analog synth swirls in the backround. This may have to do with the production assist from Gilmour et al in the making of Barrett's post-floyd albums. But, if you listen to the singer as he struggles his way through each number, you can hear sparks of verbal interplay and imagination that far outstrip anything his former bandmates have done since. It just makes my heart ache to think of what he could have accomplished had he not succumbed to his drug-aggravated mental illness. These songs are a testament not only to Syd Barrett's genius but to the striving of a noble soul undone by the vagaries of life: there but for the grace of God go I...

2 out of 5 stars He was a genius no doubt...But this is just so-so .......2006-08-18

No one acknowledges the genius of Syd Barrett more than I do...Especially, on songs like "See Emily Play" and "Arnold Layne."

Quite frankly though, if any Floyd/Barrett fanatic is truly honest with him or herself, this collection of solo material is average at best. Sure there are a couple of really great songs like "Baby Lemonade," but most of the stuff just sounds like discarded demo tapes.

5 out of 5 stars Syd Barrett, RIP.......2006-07-12

Syd Barrett will be greatly missed. His whimsical songwriting style was unique and greatly influenced many famous musicians like David Bowie. This cd is an essential purchase for those wishing a taste of genius.

5 out of 5 stars THE MADCAP REDUX: EVERYTHING EVERYTHING EVERYTHING!.......2002-11-24

Long out of print in the USA, Crazy Diamond with its extra tracks and full color booklet gives an entirely complete look into the solo recordings of rock's most misunderstood man, Syd Barrett. A founding member of the Cambridge-based psychedelic pop group The Pink Floyd, Barrett left the band in 1968 after a series of mental breakdowns which led to his final demise as a recording artist in 1971. This box set compiles the known studio recordings, rehearsals and rough demos Barrett made for albums released on the Harvest label, "Madcap" - 1970, "Barrett" - 1970 and the "lost recordings album - "Opel" released in 1988.
Complete with new artwork and date/track listings - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! WOOF WOOF!!!

3 out of 5 stars Essential? Essentially depressing........2002-03-29

A good reason to buy "Crazy Diamond": You don't already have the three basic albums on CD. Syd's two official albums are loaded with great material, so have at it.

A bad reason to buy "Crazy Diamond": You are compelled to hear every goddam chord and cough Syd Barrett ever recorded.

Syd was a visionary who evoked chills even alone with his guitar ("Feel" and "Opel" particularly), but by and large, the quality of his two official solo albums is the result of producer Dave Gilmour's heroic struggle to organize Syd's chaotic performances into something sane musicians could accompany. The bonus tracks included here are not "alternates" -- they are justifiably rejects: solo performances which were not as good as the ragged takes which were eventually used.

If you found "Opel" -- the 80s compilation of stuff which was never good enough for release when Syd was still viable -- a disappointment, there is no reason to go further. This box set only serves to emphasize the (avoidable!) tragedy that was Syd Barrett.

But if you're like me, reading this review won't stop you.
