American Whip is the second album by the very good-looking couple Vincent Cafiso and Tabitha Tindale. This decadent "newgazer" pop is woozy, beautiful, and more than a little tongue in cheek, a pleasant surprise as almost every contemporary group you’ll hear that displays inspiration from the British "shoegazer" movement of the 1980s totally blows. Joy Zipper has been criticized for being too referential and kitschy, but it's precisely their dark sense of humor and knowledge of perfect/ fuzzy pop of the past (MBV , Zombies , Stereolab , Association) that makes this the kind of record you want to fall in love to, at least sonically. The obvious single, "Christmas Song," is a sugary masterpiece of Symbolist post-pop: "I feel you most when I’m deep in madness/ I love you more than a thousand Christmases/ I want you more than any gift I can think of." The words are druggy but smart, and their overwhelmingly downer vibe is offset perfectly by the sunny California pop. The lyrics are the sole reason none of these songs have appeared in a Volkswagen commercial yet. --Mike McGonigal

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Having earned his composing stripes after the 1960s, John Adams had the pioneering work of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley close at hand as he ventured into his trade. And, while minimalism's historical continuum helps place Adams, he used Reich, Glass, and Riley (among others) only as a starting point. And here's proof: a 10-CD retrospective of nearly all Adams's recorded compositions on Nonesuch Records, the label that also issued Steve Reich 1965-1995 and Kronos Quartet: 25 Years. Adams's Harmonium, a choral work of startling energy and effervescence, appears here in a new recording, as do distillations of both The Death of Klinghoffer and Nixon in China, two path-clearing operas. Over the span of a career covered by Earbox, Adams has returned minimalism to traditional instrumental ensembles as well as to projects that at once advanced a political commentary and took that commentary back to orchestral audiences. And so, in far less time than his predecessors, Adams created works that now play like standard repertoire pieces: The Wound Dresser and Shaker Loops and the Violin Concerto--all of them are here. What these works demonstrate is a fierce creativity on the one hand and perhaps a hunger for commercial advances on the other. Adams may at times be a bustling free thinker, but he sounds ever conscious of what audiences are listening to. As for the works themselves, they remain every bit as daunting as when written.

Some may object to particular selections. I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, for example, hardly ranks with Adams's best work. But this box isn't a mere best-of; it's an almost-all-of. At times terrifically American--especially in the news-aware operas and their narrative pragmatism--Adams well deserves a major box set, and its coverage is appropriate to his varied, stylistically diverse output. As with any large-scale retrospective, Earbox--which fairly bristles with Adams's new composition, Slonimsky's Earbox--has spots where fans might balk at the quality of the composer's writing. But it's got a fantastic accompanying booklet along with its many hours of inarguably modern and thoroughly listener-friendly music. --Andrew Bartlett

Never before in my life was i moved so intensely and directly by classical music. I put the first cd in my player and a few minutes later tears are flowing. I find myself dancing and moving to a rythm i already seem to know. Wow, i just have to share that.

John adams is one of the most popular living composers of"modern" classical music[I believe the cutoff point, though arbitrary is usually WWII}.I came to him late, through my husband. Modersn classical music , I said? What the hell is that?My husband kept playing bits and pieces of adams for me, and more and more i found myself amazed. and swayed. His operas have been groundbreaking{Nixon in China} controversial{Death Of klinghoffer},his compostions sublimely beautiful{shaker Loops or harmonium].HIS STATURE IS WORTHY THEN OF SUCH A MONUMENTAL CAREER SPANNING BOX SET.This 10 disc set[great value, again from NONESUCH}encompasses Adams' entire career,and though there are some misses here{I was looking at the ceiling and then i saw the sky doesnt quite fit},it is still magnificent. the Highlights are ,{for me} the Wound Dresser, Chamber symphony,Violin Concerto, of course, Shaker Loops and Harmonuim are wonderful. The true jewels here are Nixon in China,the Chairman dances and the Death of Klinghoffer,which is simply a masterpiece. The set comes with a wonderful book, which contains essay's by Robert Hurwitz {An Uncommon Man}renaud Machart[John adams as seen from europe} and Essays before an earbox by Adams himself.A Chronology and dicography are included. I must agree with Mr. Bartlett, particularly with regard to "Ceiling." It may well be because his Violin Concerto and Harmonielehre are so powerful. 4.5 stars.
Interesting, and likely intentional, is that two names in the extensive liner book fail to mention two great and glaringly obvious precursors: Carl Orff and Raymond Scott. Without "Carmina Burana," there would be no "Harmonium." Orff has his mark all over Adams's gifted and epic compositions. Similarly, though there are glib references to "cartoon music," the polymath engineer/musician Scott is a seminal figure in American music, and casts a large shadow over the witty juxtapositions and sense of play one loves in Adams's work. In all, an excellent career overview.

As a composer, I'm staggered that anyone could fail to be gripped by this music.

That anyone can use the words "spoiled, overrated" amazes me. I emphatically disagree with "A music fan"'s review.

I don't think it's "mind-numbing"; I think it's spiritual and exciting. To me it's the most substantial music being created in our times.

I'm really sorry that anyone could fail to enjoy it, and really recommend others to listen for themselves.

CBrass has for some years now been one of the premiere brass units in the world. Having seen them twice in person, they are true showmen and ambassadors for their country, their music and instruments.

Here is a CD that is needed in our time: a collection of patriotic, good ole' American music.

This is 4th of July clap your hands firework watching music at its best. In fact, that is exactly what listening to this collection does for me: it takes me to the excellent Greenfield Village at Henry Ford's annual 4th Fireworks Concert.

This is good stuff, well done by early CBrass.

The Canadian Brass never fail to please, and this CD really lives up to that reputation. Even with the added orchestra, the songs never get bogged down or unevenly weighted. This was one of the first CB CD's I bought several years ago, and still one of my favourites of theirs.

This cd is a lot of fun to listen to, mainly because of the entirely too impressive trumpet playing. While the quintet may be a bit trumpet heavy, it does not detract from music in this corny, showy style. It is a lot of fun to listen to, and I highly recommend it to those who love brass music.

American Whip is the second album by the very good-looking couple Vincent Cafiso and Tabitha Tindale. This decadent "newgazer" pop is woozy, beautiful, and more than a little tongue in cheek, a pleasant surprise as almost every contemporary group you'll hear that displays inspiration from the British "shoegazer" movement of the 1980s totally blows. Joy Zipper has been criticized for being too referential and kitschy, but it's precisely their dark sense of humor and knowledge of perfect/ fuzzy pop of the past (MBV , Zombies , Stereolab , Association) that makes this the kind of record you want to fall in love to, at least sonically. The obvious single, "Christmas Song," is a sugary masterpiece of Symbolist post-pop: "I feel you most when I'm deep in madness/ I love you more than a thousand Christmases/ I want you more than any gift I can think of." The words are druggy but smart, and their overwhelmingly downer vibe is offset perfectly by the sunny California pop. The lyrics are the sole reason none of these songs have appeared in a Volkswagen commercial yet. --Mike McGonigal

Some days there is just nothing more enjoyable than sitting in the open air - whether on a porch, or near a lake; it's just down right refreshing... Every once in a while, you might see something that provokes deep thought, or maybe a sweet smile... American Whip by the Joy Zippers brings that feeling to mind through the ears. Yes, an 'Ahhhh' to my ears & mind it is.

If the White Stripes got really, REALLY stoned, they might sound something like Joy Zipper.

This talented duo smothers any sign of a sophomore slump in "American Whip," with its lush mesh of sixties psychedelica and shoegazer pop. The resulting album is languid, expansive and dreamy, but laced with a dark edge that you won't find in any Zombies or Beach Boys album.

The delicately blurred "Sunstroke" slowly opens into a whimsical little love song: "I need you more than the rain in springtime/love you more than the open sea." It's an exceptionally sweet song, and it does lure you in. But don't expect all to be happiness and light -- despite the colorful, hazy sound, the songs can get pretty grim at times.

Examples: The swirling lo-fi pop number "Alzheimer's" is from the POV of an old woman with Alzheimer's Disease. "Why do I keep forgetting my name?/Maybe it's something I ate/What is this terrible thing coming over me?" Vincent Cafiso drones. Parent/child alienation. And odes to "Drugs" and magic mushrooms.

Despite their obvious debts to bands like Stereolab, Zombies and fuzzy psychpop, Joy Zipper doesn't sound specifically like anything but itself. The duo's hazy, mellow music just sweeps the listener off their feet, as it brings to mind visions of California sunshine, summer days, flowery fields... and lots of drugs.

Cafiso and his bandmate Tabitha Tindale share keyboard duty, weaving a thick electronic fog around Cafiso's slow-burning guitar riffs and mellow basslines. There are some guest musicians, mostly contributing violins to songs like "Dosed and Became Invisible," which has a strong string presence from beginning to end.

Cafiso and Tindale have wonderfully synchronised vocals -- he sounds stoned and melodic, she sounds ethereal. And they're suited to the smart lyrics: "I dosed and became invisible/A compilation of my dreams/Exploded in my sleep." The "Alzheimer's" song hedges on bad taste when Cafiso sings about Ivory soap, but the lack of humor saves it from seeming grossly insensitive.

Like a shoegazer Fiery Furnaces or a stoned White Stripes, Joy Zipper churns out beautifully foggy rock music. "American Whip" is definitely worth checking out.

This was way too strange. I heard 33x on XM's XMU station. I write down the group and song. I am unfamilar. I buy American Whip. I also buy the first album... with nary a listen at all. I think there are elements of Stereolab, Ivy, Flowchart, My Bloody Valentine, Lush, and maybe even that vocal standard of Juliana Hatfield from just a limited exposure to a single song. I knows what I like. I jump.
When I get the album American Whip, I am reading thru the liner notes.. so who is doing some of the mixing? None other than Kevin Shields... what the.... no wonder I like it. I wondered what he was doing since there is no other MBV album on any horizon since Loveless. The sound is unmistakable... you can hear that poppy vocal sound along with great guitar riffs and analog electronics.
To say the least, both albums are excellent. They are on continuous play. I purchased everything else I could find. That should tell you something.

I saw Joy Zipper play at the Avalon in Hollywood about a month ago and thought they were amazing. I had heard their album once before seeing the show and liked it, but now i'm just obsessesed with it. It's got that Beach Boy feel to it but with much darker lyrics. I highly recommend it!

Albums of this quality are a rare commodity these days and this goes especially for rock. The sound, though not ground breaking, is fairy uncomplicated, guitar-based psychedelia with some striking vocals. Not only are they fabulously produced to an arguably deeper emotional level than the Beach Boys' "God Only Knows," but they lyrically tackle some frankly dark and thought provoking subject matter. Aside from the obviously depression founded "33x," "Dosed And Became Invisible" relates one of the least glamorizing yet knowledgeable accounts of psilocybin mushroom use I've heard on record, and lord knows I've looked. One of the most spiritually educational drugs, and completely natural at that, theories even circulate about the symbiotic relationship we have with them, that is they could have been the black omen from "2001: A Space Odyssey" which jumpstarted our evolution and gave us such gifts as insight, religion, philosophy, and much more. It's no giggling hippy account but a contemplative celebration and subtle encouragement for this spectacular, naturally growing fungus. "Alzheimers" has to be the most powerful song here though with its gripping sample of an old woman trying to guess her own age and coming up about thirty years short to which the melancholic drone of Vincent Cafiso and Tabitha Tindale lends its most fitting atmosphere and brings much needed attention to a truly paralyzing and family stressing disorder propagated by chemicals and additives that governments and the industries that support them shroud in lies. Calling this a Rock album would be an insult to its integrity. This is a compelling work of emotional magnitude that should be taught from in schools.

This cool album includes the 80's classic 'Whip It', as well as many other of the band's new wave hits. This is a classic new wave band with many classic hits on it, at a great bargain price.

I'm not going to go into much detail here, because there isn't much to comment upon. It's not unpleasant. I'm an amateur musician and my tastes are pretty broad.

of course joy zipper owe a lot to 60's 'surf's up' period beach boys amongst others, but they have enough wit and verve to be their own thing too.
It should be noted they have a knack for a catchy chorus (i've been singing the words from christmas song' i love you more than a thousand christmases' all week ) and a sense of humor, albeit a little sick (see 'alzheimers')
The overall effect of listening to this album is like a drugged out day at the beach in late summer. You know that it's all going to be winding up soon and that you're never going to be happier than you are at that moment

I'd never heard of this band before, and at first they struck me as any old chillout band: pretty girl, quiet guy, gentle, pastoral summer afternoon music. But this record unravels its charms subtly and slowly until you are intoxicated. Weaving psychadelica, indie, space-rock and pop into one coherant whole, its full of gorgeous harmonies on tracks like the understated but ecstasy-inspiring 'Christmas Song', like a collision between European chillout and sweet, US indie music. The album benefits very much from the excellent production of the brilliant David Holmes.

Both of them have lovely voices, particularly the girl, who has one of those sweet, innocent American voices you could just die for. 'Baby You Should Know' is driven by rock guitar and a soulful feel that makes it a catchy, brilliant pop song somewhat reminiscent of Grandaddy. The uptempo, wistful optimism of 'Out of the Sun' breaks your heart with its beauty, 'Dosed And Became Invisible' is all gorgeous, hovering strings and 'Ron' is just as great a bittersweet, immense song about time and death and the Flaming Lips have ever mustered. Things close with the immediate, simple, inspiring 'Valley Stream'. Quirky, catchy, and sugar-sweet, this is the perfect soundtrack for 2004 as summer approaches. Pretty near perfect.

Buyer beware. I purchased the CD anticipating interpretive versions of his most famous pieces played by Gershwin himself. But instead, the CD consists of reproduced player piano rolls--very mechanical, no change in tempo, and just plain irritating to listen to, after the novelty of the first track wears off. I looked back at the product detail to see if I had missed the mention of "player piano versions", but found none. Big disappointment.
