Handsome British trio BBMak break away from the Backstreet Boys/'N Sync axis with a debut album the sounds of which revolve more around guitar-driven pop-rock rather than synthesizer-heavy big ballads and attempts at hip-hop cred. With classic-sounding vocal harmonies and arrangements reminiscent of a cornucopia of '90s lite-rock stars, the disc is well produced and particularly likable on its first few mid-to-uptempo cuts. It's when the group slows down, as on "Ghost of You and Me" and "I Can Tell," that it starts to come far too close to Richard Marx territory for comfort. Though such tracks don't display BBMak at their best, they're unfortunately the ones that radio programmers may be most likely to embrace. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Sooner or Later.......2007-07-07

This album came out when mu husband had died. I do so wish he had lived to hear some of this music he would have loved it too.
The feelings and emotions in this album truely spoke to my experience as a young widow.
I was in Yonkers when this was being filmed. I had the chance to be at the shopping mall when that scene was filmed. To this day I still can feel all the emotion and thrill in the air that was there that day when Rex was perfoming Better than It's ever been before live.
If you have the opportunity to see him perform live-- take it!!! It is the chance of a lifetime to see a performer of Rex's calibur. He treats his audiance like they truly matter. Not many modern performers take the time to get to know their fan base like he does. Take the chance to meet and greet Rex you will not be disappointed!!!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Love Story With Great Music!.......2007-06-20

This is a great cd to go along with a great movie for young and old. Jessie talking to her grandma is a great part of the movie. Jessie's Theme is the best song on the soundtrack. Buy this cd you'll love it!

Nice to have the album finally released on CD. Great album and movie from the '70's. Hearing the songs again brings back a lot of memories.

5 out of 5 stars I love this soundtrack.......2006-12-07

I loved this movie as a young girl and love the soundtrack as well. But to this day, I'm still upset that the soundtrack doesn't include the song "Shades of Blue." The song that is played when Michael breaks up with Jessie. The song is perfect for those scenes while she's crying. Though it does have a happy ending! :)

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-08-06

This is a wonderful double CD of fabulous musical numbers performed by theatre greats and directed by a legandary musical director.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the Best.......2005-06-29

First, to the person who criticizes the recording b/c of "Broadway Baby." Daisy Egan (who sings in in this recording) sounds like she's 10 becuase she IS young. She had just appeared on Braodway in Secret Garden and won a Tony for it. It's a joke...Broadway BABY...hello, it's a joke.

In a compilation of songs like this you're always going to have tracks that you prefer over others, but the majority of the renditions in this CD are great. This is simply one of the best collections of Sondheim out there. You get interpretations that span from "classical" (Green Finch), to bordering on insane (Anything Twice). This is to demonstrate how versatile this composer really is.

In my opinion, some of the best renditions are "Not a Day Goes By," "Anyone Can Whistle", "Girls Upstairs Medley," "Losing My Mind/Drive a Person Crazy," and "Weekend inthe Country." Makes me wish I had been there to witness it first hand.

If you love Sondheim and enjoy hearing Broadway performers, get this CD. A great recording.

4 out of 5 stars Inconsistent, but mostly excellent.......2004-03-21

I am sure no knowledgeable person would deny how absolutely perfect all these songs are. However, the performances on this album are extremely inconsistent. It will go from an excellent rendition (Waiting for the Girls medley, Sunday, With So Little To Be Sure Of, Sooner or Later, Green Finch, Send in the Clowns, Pretty Lady) to the weird (I never Do Anything Twice), to the bad (Broadway Baby, Our Time). I still have absolutely no idea how they managed to butcher one of the best songs ever written--Good Thing Going--and turn it into smooth jazz elevator music. Why would they give Broadway Baby to someone who sounds like she's 10? That said, Liza Minelli, Glenn Close, Karen Ziemba, Dorothy Laudon and the "Waiting for the Girls" performers are all very good. And ending with Bernadette Peters and "Sunday" ends the set on a absolutley fabulous note.

5 out of 5 stars "Celebration" is not strong enough a word.......2003-04-30

This review is by Crosley.

I have been a major Sondheim fan for quite some time, and I finally obtained a copy of this album. I was blown away by the excellent cast and phenomenal selection of music. It is obvious how much work went into this production, considering that this is the live recording of a one time show, and it's flawless. The songs cover all of his shows with the exception of "Passion," which was released 3 years after this show. Also, the shows for which he wrote only lyrics are ommited, like West Side Story, Gypsy, etc. Thus, you can find material from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Anyone can Whistle, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Pacific Overtures, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Merrily we Roll Along, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, and Assassins.

There are two striking things about this CD (besides the music and performers themselves). First of all, some of the songs are completely stylistically reworked. The most obvious are "Good Thing Going" and "I Never do Anything Twice." Both are traditionally very ballady with a piano accompaniment, but here they have been redone as jazzy tunes. The result is excellent. Such reworkings demonstrate that Sondheim writes music for virtually any style, and in these cases, across several styles. It's a great example of his variety. The other interesting thing is how many songs have overlapping melodies of songs from different shows. Case in point, "Our Time" and "No one is Alone" are sung seperately by the Harlem Boys Choir and Betty Buckley (the original Grizabella in Webber's atrocious "CATS," although Buckley was excellent) respectively, and then combined. Putting these two songs together offer different meanings to each, and the music is only enhanced. Another example, the trio of "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs," "Love, I Hear," and "Live Alone and Like It" are sung in that order, and then the latter two are combined. Again, the meanings of the songs change, this time in an almost narrative style, and offering different takes on love in the same montage. Lastly (at least for this review, there are more), Dorothy Laudon's (the original Ms. Hannigan in Annie) combination of "Losing my Mind" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" is brilliant. Those who are familiar with these songs will wonder how exactly they fit, but trust me, they do. She swtiches back and forth between melodies to create a number that starts poignant and beautiful, and soon moves to become uproariously funny. Both the song reworkings and overlapping melodies of unrelated songs are all for the better.

I recommend this recording to anyone wanting to get better acquainted with some of Sondheim's best work, or those already familiar who want to hear a tour de force of phenomenal music. It has been said that Sondheim is a masterful lyricist (which he is), but lacks real talent for music. This CD is the final proof that such critics are wrong. His music may take a few listenings to get into, contrary to Webber or Wildhorn, but unlike those two, he doesn't cater to the audience. He challenges them to think outside of traditional musical theater in a glorious repertoise of shows that reach for a smarter, more sophisticated form.

5 out of 5 stars A maginificent evening, a magnificent album.......2001-12-16

There's something to be said for the first concert you ever see at Carnegie Hall. I was fortunate enough to have this be my first. This entire evening was devoted to his genius and the performers did not disappoint.

This wonderful double CD shows off the best and brightest of the musical theatre composer and it is, as one person put it, "an embarassment of riches." With songs from his finest works done in amazing arrangements (listen to that harmony in "We Had a Good Thing Going"!) combined with fabulous performers this is a Sondheim lovers delight.

My favorite song is, without a doubt, Dorothy Louden and her wonderful medley of "Losing My Mind" into "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" followed very closely by the recently departed Madeline Kahn singing "Getting Married Today."

Lauded by authors Nick Hornby and Stephen King--and anyone else who has seen the band take to the stage--Marah has just enough swagger to make their sixth record (and accompanying DVD) a live one, as well as the loose-knit proficiency to make it work. The Philadelphia band, led by brothers, songwriters, and vocalists Serge and David Bielanko, turn down the volume on the seven-song CD, which mainly tracks 2005's If You Didn't Laugh, You'd Cry. While their charisma and enthusiasm are apparent on the CD, Marah saves for the DVD the chaos and tension that make them so unpredictably marvelous. Twenty-one songs filmed in a tiny Spanish club slice through the band's catalog, including rockers like "Point Breeze" and "Round Eye Blues" mingling with covers of the Faces ("Debris") and Willie Nelson ("On the Road Again"). Bad: The soundtrack doesn't always match the video. Good: Multiple camera angles kindle the bedlam. Best: You can discover in one tidy package what makes Marah one of America's best rock bands. And seeing is believing. --Scott Holter

Album Description

Their first ever live release, Sooner or Later in Spain, includes a live DVD with 17 blistering tracks (from a 2005 concert in Spain), containing rare material such as fan favorite "Reservation Girl." DVD bonus material includes an appearance and reading by bestselling author Nick Hornby (High Fidelity, About a Boy), who once said of Marah (in the NY Times), "I can hear everything I ever loved about rock music in their recordings and live shows." See for yourself what he's talking about. The accompanying CD features seven live tracks culled from an assortment of other brilliant Marah shows, including material from their critically lauded albums 20,000 Streets Under the Sky, Let's Cut the Crap..., Kids in Philly, and 2005's If You Didn't Laugh, You'd Cry.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars SLIPPERY WITH SWEAT.......2006-12-06

A funny thing happened to me while watching this DVD. At first I was pretty freakin disappointed. Where was the big stage, lights and bombs? Where the hell was my DTS, or at least 5.1 sound field? What, no overdubs - how dare they! Then the realization hit me and washed over me like a soothing wave. This ain't Bon Jovi! This ain't "Slippery when Wet" - this was MARAH - this was "Slippery with Sweat"! I was back in LUV! This is exactly why I fell in love with MARAH in the first place. This is music played by 5 guys who get it - by it I mean Life and Music. This is not music for the masses - all CGI and DTS. This is music played by two brothers dancing drunk on the ledge of a 50 story building - piss drunk at that! MARAH is the only band I would even dare to compare to "Exile" era Stones. The difference is these boys do it in real time, no overdubs, and in your face. Mick and Keith had a year, 100 reels of 2" tape, substances to abuse and 50 takes per song! If your heart beats, if you've ever loved and lost it all, if the closest you'll ever come to a silver spoon in your mouth is with a wad of cotton and a book of matches - then this is your music. Buy this now! And MARAH - keep break'n hearts man - see ya on tour.

By the way, am I the only one who thinks "Round Eye Blues" is the greatest song in the world. "I think about those sweet motown girls they left behind and the..."

5 out of 5 stars The greatest current live rock show.......2006-12-01

If you already own and like even one Marah CD, but haven't seen the boys live, then by all means get this. It's more raucous than their CDs, but I'm betting 90% of you will like it. Of course, anyone who has seen them live will already be getting this. But if you are NEW to the band ... well, then the DVD quality might put you off and this isn't the best introduction to Marah. Instead, you should buy "If You Didn't Laugh You'd Cry" and check them out.

3 out of 5 stars GREAT BAND. GREAT SHOW. So-So DVD........2006-11-24

If you havnt heard of these guys yet, they bring their own Ragged-But-Right style of Rock-n-Roll to the table with a sensability not unlike the early Stones or Faces. You may have heard about their comparisons to THE REPLACEMENTS. They are undoubtly one of the Best Live American RAWK Bands right up there with TOM PETTY/HEARTBREAKES, SPRINGSTEEN/E-STREET, THE BLACK CROWES, THE BOTTLE ROCKETS. All honest praise-well deserved.

But man, I'm really on the fence on this new MARAH release. The video, filmed in a small but packed club in Spain is grainy and a bit rough by today's standards. Alot of the video was shot right over the audience. It tries to establish that you-are-there feelin' and kinda fits the bands style. There's no 5.1 Dolby - sound is just PCM Stereo. Which woulda been OK if it had been a bit hotter, punchier, but its not. Kinda muddy. However, the band's performance is Exceptional! These Kids from Philly were SMOKIN' this night in Mataro, Spain. 11 on a Ten Scale! You get over 20 tracks so its a Full show, plus some bonus footage in other cities. Its just that the quality of Audio & Video of the Main Show is normally reserved for the Bonus Materials section of most other Artist's DVDs. I found my copy in the CD section of my local Mega Store. Its indexed on Amazon under CD's also, yet the CD is really the Bonus part of the package for it only has 7 tracks (which greatfully are Not repeats of the DVD's tracks). Normally the record company has a Full length CD release and throws in a Bonus DVD as an incentive to Buy, not Download said disc. Here its just the opposite but wisely they're not marketing it as a DVD.

All-in-All a lot of Bang for the Buck. If you're a fan of MARAH, you need this record of the Sweat & Heart this band pumps out any night, every night they play. If you're nit picky about A/V quality, save your money and try out any of their CD releases first.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Really good CD.......2006-07-30

BBMak was a British trio who wrote their own songs and played guitars and had pitch-perfect, 3-part harmonies. I became a fan in 2000 after hearing their hit single, Back Here, on the radio. Because of their looks, they were lumped into the "boy band" category alongside NSYNC and Backstreet Boys.

BBMak's music is acoustic pop/rock. Although it is aimed at teens, adults who enjoy good pop music will like it as well.

I definitely recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2006-04-17

A good solid Cd. What I love about this band is that they wrote their own stuff, and could play it...AND sing it! They also had a unique way of trading verses; One guy would get the first, the next guy the second and so on, then all would sing the chorus. I also really liked that they all had voices that blend well; close enough to harmonize perfect, sounding almost like one person. But just slightly different tones and octaves, so that each verse had "their" own sound to it.
Of course personally I think that Christian Burns had the best voice and could have easily been on his own. But still...all together, they sound great!
The whole album is good, and I can listen to the whole thing non stop, but my fave is "Ghost Of You And Me" there is a catchy, haunting sound to the singing.
So in the end; Good album I'd recommend to anyone. And as the Brits say "Brilliant!"

5 out of 5 stars One of the best group albums..........2005-10-29

I have been a fan of BBMak's since day one...back in 2000...5 years later, I find myself STILL listening to both albums. Its sad that they were lumped into the whole boyband craze but then again, it was good timing. I wish they had lasted longer and I hope that this group comes back to write some more great music. Not only are they gorgeous but their songs, harmonies, everything are FANTASTIC!

5 out of 5 stars My fave studio album ever.......2005-09-20

Every people have a fave studio album. This one is the mine.
The BBMak best album, an only one sound. Amazing. Today there is not much acoustic albums, this is what you need.

Not just a man vocal group, like Backstreet Boys, much less NSYNC
The trio is between a Rock band and a boyband.
The music of this cd: Pop-Rock Acoustic & Soul, and a little bit of Folk

Each song is amazing, but the best songs are:
Back Here (The BBMak hit!!)
Still on your side
Ghost of you and me
I'm not in love
Love on the outside
Love is leaving....

5 out of 5 stars "Sooner or Later" Review -.......2005-06-10

This remains one of my favorite CDs that I own. I'm not ashamed to admit it. It was one of my first, and it got me through my 3rd and 4th grade year. I never got their second CD, but I'm guessing it's just as good. This is one of the CDs I own where I will listen to it and not skip a track. Some may joke about me liking BBMak. Hey, some don't even know the band. Personally, I'd rather people not know, because if people did know "back in the day" (which would be 5 years ago or so) I really think they would have blown up and then every female in this country would've made them into another "N'Sync", "98 degrees", and "Backstreet Boys" band (this is "only" a bad thing because they become popular).

Though they have broken up, which I also recently just heard (I'm still hoping it's not true), I recommend getting this album. Sometimes I'll turn off the radio and listen to "Sooner or Later". It reminds me about when everything was pop and lyrics actually meant a little something (heh, no offense).

I was lucky enough to listen to them a while back, but this is one of the CDs where I seriously don't think it will matter if you start listening to them now. All that matters is that you listen to them.

Reasons To Get This CD:
1. It has actual meaningful lyrics
2. They're great musicians (...or were...)
3. Because you won't regret it. Believe me.

Until you're back here, baby...miss you, want you, need you so...

5 out of 5 stars Don't miss this guy's music!.......2001-10-17

If you haven't heard this guy, you should. Soulful, smooth voice and fluid guitar. Nothing fancy, just heartfelt blues you can kick back and enjoy the groove with. He'll be missed.

4 out of 5 stars Soulful blues........1999-03-26

This release should have been a breakthrough for Larry Davis. His voice may not be the smoothest ever recorded but what he lacks in tone he more than makes up in feeling. Give "Penitentiary Blues" a listen, you'll know what I mean. It's unfortunate that Larry Davis passed on in 1994 without ever receiving the mainstream credit he deserved. But isn't that common for many bluesmen of his generation?

2 out of 5 stars Needs Better production!.......2005-06-26

The very last thing you would expect of a Hamish Stuart album is to be weak vocally, but that's what you get here. But it's the fault of the production itself, and not the quality of his voice. Listen to the old AWB songs, produced by Arif Mardin.(?) The vocals and instruments had a "live" sound to them, as a result of being produced with a touch of reverb, to simulate a "hall" effect, making everything sound fuller and richer. That's what this CD needs. The sound is just way too raw for this style of music. Also.....there's not even one song that really grabs you like the old AWB stuff. AWB used to be my favorite band and hamish was my favorite singer, but I realize now that a lot of that came from the production and quality of the songs. One of the greatest lines in the history of R&B music was from the AWB song "You Got it"......."I don't give a damn who knows it! You are the one.....the one I truly need....so baby listen to me!" That's what I'm talkin about! That's the voice of joyful, new love....shouting from the rooftops!

5 out of 5 stars It's a Winner!.......2001-05-28

When I first this CD there were two songs that immediately impressed me, "Care For You", and "Reach You". After playing these two songs several times, I eventually let the others play. Before I knew it, I found more favorites like, "It Is What It Is" (love that opening bass line), Sooner, and "Midnight Rush". Now that this monster has been in constant rotation for the past week... YES! It's a definite WINNER!

5 out of 5 stars Rhythm, Blues and Soul baby - you'll love this one!.......2000-08-24

Sometimes the best CDs are the ones you don't know what to expect. This one blew me away! Smooooooooth! with lots of soul. Good Lyrics too. There are some groovin' numbers ("It Is What It Is", "Care For You", "La La Land", "Midnight Rush") Terrific Jazz numbers ("Makin' It Up, I Don't Want to be a Rock") My suggestion is to buy this CD and a good bottle of wine, sit in the sun and get ready to smile! ....and if you're in the mood to slow dance, the combo: "New Kind of Fool", "Same Old Moon" is perfect. If you're a fan of R&B, Soul or Jazz, you should give this one a listen. You'll love it!

3 out of 5 stars For Average White Band unconditional fans........2000-08-23

Hamish Stuart was one of the dominant members of theJazz-Funk-Soul Average White Band, a group made of Irishmen and Scots, who had a contagious, soulful and danceable music in the seventies ("Pick up the pieces" went to number 1 in the U.S.A.). The truth is AWB hasn't done much lately apart from touring from time to time and having its members releasing alternative projects (see for instance Hamish's Easy Pieces project, 1988). We now have Hamish's new delivery with an album I bought as soon as I knew it was available. The cd offers good and average things.

On the negative side, some tracks are a bit too repetitive ("It is what it is", "New kind of fool"), a bit too lengthy (most songs are well over 5 minutes, and "La la land" gives the impression it is over ten minutes). Also, it seems at times there is a lack of consistency because of the different directions the album takes : blues, acidjazz on the opening track, soul, folk ("Same old moon" sounds more like a James Taylor song).

On the good side, the three strong and energic intro-bridge-outro tracks ("Sooner""Or""Later"), a beautiful ballad ("Reach you"), the nice horn section on "I still care for you", or "Midnight rush", the perfect example of what I would have liked to hear more on this album. Strangely enough, the longest track ("Making it up") doesn't seem that long, probably because it has enough different sequences and an agressive sax, which in this case makes it a good song. The closing song (written by George Clinton) gives a nice gospel touch to the album.

So, if you are a collector or big fan of the AWB, although it is not as good as their best albums, you will want to have this CD. If not, you can always stick to tracks 1,2,4,7,8,12 and 13 and enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars hamish stuart at his best!.......2000-06-27

"sooner or later" hamish stuart latest CD is a brilliant work of art. his harmonizing and vocals really brings out the best in his songs. if anyone was ever a AWB (average white band) fan, they should absolutely check this CD out. i rate it four stars. gralin nelson

3 out of 5 stars Worth having because of Honey..........2006-09-20

... the Lion Dance and the fact that some of these arrangements work well out of context. Some of these songs in their original arrangements are diffiicult to listen to on their own. Regretfully, some of these arrangements are a little cheesy (for example the saxophone solo in this version of Loving You).

All in all, this is an okay compilation of some Sondheim songs, but definately one to get after having bought all the original Broadway cast recordings.

I love this CD, every track is a winner. Get it.

3 out of 5 stars Honestly, Why Bother?.......2002-07-31

All in all, this is a pleasant enough compilation. There are no embarassing moments. The performers all acquit themselves nicely. But in the long run, there's really little to recommend this above the rest of the many tributes and reviews recorded of Sondheim's music. No new interpretations. No amazing performances. No inspired song choices. Nothing special here, folks.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-03-09

First of all, I'm a big Switchfoot fan. I also occasionally enjoy classical music. I've even enjoyed previous string tributes to other bands. Strung Out on OK Computer comes to mind, as well as a Pink Floyd tribute.

But this just doesn't work for me. I liked maybe two of the songs on here, the rest sounded cheesy and pretentious. I ended up giving my copy away to my little brother for Christmas. :o)

And I don't even know what "The Sharing of Tries" is.

3 out of 5 stars For the complete Switchfoot Fan.......2005-10-11

Most people will enjoy this album if they are fans of Switchfoot's older music. Although the album has a few hits from "The Beautiful Letdown", most of the CD features hits from earlier albums. My only complaint about the album, is that it is an entirely digital recording from what I hear. The songs are not performed by a real string quartet. If you are a fan of classical music then this might bother you, otherwise it is a pretty good album.

4 out of 5 stars Another good one!.......2005-06-05

I'm not a big fan of Switchfoot...but this Quartet versions of these songs are amazing. I think this album takes Switchfoot's songs to a whole new level and improves upon their composition. Switchfoot should do more work with strings, especially if the outcome is as great as this!

5 out of 5 stars Very awesome String-Quartet Tribute.......2005-04-03

This is my favorite String-Quartet Tribute so far. If you're a fan of Switchfoot (and definately orchestra type instrumentals) you're probably going to like this. Songs like Meant To Live, Dare You To Move, Learning To Breathe, Chem 6A, and some of your other favorites are all here. This was the second type of these String Tributes I heard, and I was very impressed. This isn't the switchfoot your used to with singing and guitar, but replaced with violins and cello's and that sort. Even though an odd replacement, it's just as good as the original Switchfoot and gives you a different hear on the music. 2 thumbs up.
