During Elton John's most commercially successful period, between 1970 and 1975, he was also at his most prolific. Usually producing two albums a year, he also knocked off a dozen or so non-LP B-sides, a handful of demos for other artists, and even a soundtrack album for 1971's obscure Friends. Rare Masters, which brings much of this work together with a handful of other odds and ends (an alternate version of "Madman Across the Water," John's debut single, "I've Been Loving You"), is hardly a substitute for Greatest Hits, but its generally high quality is impressive. --Rickey Wright

The real reason to get this is the "Friends" album tracks.......2007-04-18
If you enjoy Buckmaster's orchestrations on the early Elton John albums, then you'll enjoy every aspect of this album. If you're looking just for the songs that John and Taupin wrote, you'll still enjoy the four full performances and song reprise. Just about any of these songs musically would have fit in well on "Elton John", "Tumbleweed Connection" or "Madman Across the Water" with "Honey Roll" and "Can I Put Yon On" two great lost Elton John rockers. They would have made a fine single if they had been released separately from this album (which I believe one of them was if memory serves).
We also get the singles/b-sides that were added to each Elton John album through "Tumbleweed Connection". "I've Been Loving You"/"Here's To the Next Time", "Lady Samantha"/"All Across the Havens", "It's Me That You Need", "Just Like Strange Rain", "Bad Side of the Moon", Rock & Roll Madonna", "Grey Seal" (an early version of the song from "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road")all demonstrate Elton and Bernie's developing songcraft even if they aren't always the best songs by the duo.
The second disc features an outtake from "Madman Across the Water" (included on "Tumbleweed Connection"), "Into the Old Man's Shoes", "Rock me When He's Gone", "Slave" all of which appear on "Tumbleweed" or "Honkey Chateau". "Skyline Pidgeon" is a piano/vocal re-recording that appeared as a b-side from 1973 and appears along with "Jack Rabbit", "Whenever You're Ready (We'll Go Steady)" from "Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player" (although the latter two were also on the deluxe reissue of "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road"). "Screw You". "Sick City", "Step Into Christmas" and "Ho! Ho Ho" all appear on "Carbiou" as bonus tracks. "One Day At A Time" and "I Saw Her Standing There" appeared as b-sides and on "Captain Fantastic". "House of Cards", "Planes" and "Sugar on the Floor" all appear on "Rock of the Westies". Only "Let Me Be Your Car" doesn't appear anywhere else as it was written/performed as a demo for Rod Stewart who recorded it for one of his albums.
The two CD set includes an oversized booklet with comments from Bernie about the genesis of each song. The mastering is pretty good overall and is done by Joseph Palmaccio before engineers started applying too much compression to make the music sound "louder" and more contemporary (and squeezing the dynamic range to death hurting the quality of the sounds you hear). I'd get it if you are an Elton John fan before it goes out of print as almost everything here is somewhere else, it's possible this is on the chopping block. So I'd give 4 stars to the best songs here from "Friends" and the stronger tracks from disc 2 with 2-3 stars for the other b-sides on the first disc and the remainder on disc 2 with an overall rating of 3 stars.
A purposeful purchase.......2007-03-20
A Great Choice For The E.J. Fan Who Has It All.......2006-09-22
If you're unfamiliar with Elton's albums, there are some better choices to start with. I'd suggest, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Madman Across The Water, Rock of the Westies, or even his latest release, The Captain & The Kid, over Rare Masters. That said, if you've worn grooves in your 20 year old LP versions of the above mentioned you can't go wrong with Rare Masters.

Now let's get to the business of dissecting this meticulously put together gem. First, disc one (Synopsis) has nineteen tracks beginning with Channel live's Mad Izm remix, Nas/AZ life is a B***h (Remix #1) this beat got my head nodding I almost broke my neck, Brand Nubian's Word is Bond Jazz Remix, Big L's MVP remix #1, and my favorite Jemini the Gifted One Scars and Pain --- One of the best beats I have ever heard, a '94 era East New York sound, hard drums and snares, and Kool Keith (YO Black Remix) Stupid track, I can't believe this cat got skillz '95 era.
Disc two, begins where one left off --- Organized Konfusion's Bring it on (Remix) GOOD GOD What a track! rugged, dark tone, and jazzy. The aforementioned always got me nodding my head seriously, head almost decapitated no kidding peace to Organized. Bushwackas Caught up in the game nice track I love it, Guru/Bahamadia --- Respect the Architect Jazz Remix, Diamond D, Sadat X, and my man Lord Finesse --- U can't front 93 circa, this track sort of introduced Buckwild to the hip hop HEADZ. Channel Live's Mad Izm (95 Remix New Lyrics and Beats) better than the original remix, and Black Sheep's North South East West (Remix. Alright guys, these are just snippets of what this album offers go COP it Please Please Please. I can't leave my house without it, as a matter of fact I have one in my car and the other one in my room --- Two CD's I copped.
Finally, one love to Buckwild for his contribution to underground hip hop
and this impeccable album is a testament to the above assertion, moreover, his body of works is ineffaceable I mean ineffaceable. One!

More interesting (and--predictably--less mechanical) than his piano rolls, Gershwin Performs Gershwin showcases the Gershwin-conducted rehearsal sessions for Second Rhapsody and Porgy and Bess along with two Gershwin radio specials recorded in the early '30s titled Music by Gershwin. These are period pieces, for sure--the sound is shoddy, and the radio spots' commercials are as entrancing as the music that's being played. But, yes, that is Gershwin conducting and playing piano, and this is as close as we'll get to hearing these familiar tunes being played the way he wanted them. --Jason Verlinde

Customer Reviews:
For the Serious Elton John Fan.......2006-01-08
Before buying this set, I was unaware that Elton John had recorded his first single in December 1967, which was then released in March 1968. Listening to the songs from the late 60s, you can also see a much stronger blues influence than was evident in the songs from the 1972 onward. One of the great features of this set is the 24-page booklet that includes comments from Bernie Taupin as well as explanations by the author of the booklet regarding the history of each song. The booklet alone is a must-have for the serious Elton John fan.
There are so many songs on this CD that I would be unable to talk about every single one, so instead let's focus on some of the highlights.
The entire soundtrack from "Friends", an early 70s movie, is included on the first CD. I am either proud or regretful to say that I actually saw this movie in the theater when it was released. The movie was okay; Elton's soundtrack was lovely. I admit that every time I listen to the soundtrack, I think about the movie, which was poignant, though a bit weak. Elton's first effort at a movie soundtrack was very good, and was a harbinger of the distant future when he provided music for many more movies.
Two other very interesting tracks on disk 1. "Lady Samantha" is often considered the song that got the music industry interested in this young singer/songwriter. Released the same year as "Empty Sky" in England, and a year before Elton's U.S. debut, things moved very fast for Elton from that point. The other song is "Grey Seal", a much more polished version of which appeared on "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road". This version is more bluesy, and slower, than the later version. You can feel Elton's raw talent on this song.
Disk 2 has many more gems. There is a blues-rock version of "Madman Across the Water" that lasts for nearly 9 minutes. Though portions of this song are dated, this is harder rock than Elton usually plays. There is a newer recorded version of "Skyline Pigeon", originally recorded for the "Empty Sky" album. This version shows the evolution of Elton's skill as a singer and a musician. Another song I enjoyed was "Step into Christmas", released in November 1973. This song did not do well as a single, which was surprising given Elton's popularity during this time frame, but the song is a fun, fast-paced rock Christmas song. The lyrics are simple, the hooks are catchy, but still one of the best rock Christmas songs I can recall.
"I Saw Her Standing There" is a live duet recorded with John Lennon in Madison Square Garden on 28 November 1974. While the sound is not great, this song was John's last live appearance before a live audience. The booklet explains in detail the origin of this song, which was based on a bet between Elton and John Lennon.
There are a number of other wonderful songs. There are a couple that are not so wonderful. However, on the balance, I am pleased with this 2-CD set. Certainly, this boxed set is a must-have for any serious Elton John fan. This music spans his most creative era, from 1967 to 1975. The songs are ordered chronologically, which gives the listener a real flavor for the musical evolution of the first superstar of the 70s. Enjoy!
